Came here with a group of six guys after the end of a bachelor party weekend. Kitsch'n has the problem of smaller places which is that they have no lobby or waiting area. So six of us guys, plus whoever came after us, is just crammed in this small area by the door as we await our table. I wasn't sure what was going on as there were plenty of empty tables but they were not sitting us. We probably waited for 20 minutes before we were finally sat. I started with one of their crazy, huge Tiki Mai Tais. It was very good and the giant, green cup it came in was pretty cool. I ordered the chicken and waffles for food. The chicken was excellent. Awesome breading, very moist, and a sweet flavor to it. The waffle looked awesome, but the second my fork cut into it, it deflated like sad balloon. Overall nothing really bad happened but nothing wowed me. read more

I love the atmosphere at Kitsch'n. It has this really fun retro vibe and decor with lots of fun things to look at. The tables are really close together, but thats to be expected in a place as small as Kitsch'n. There is outdoor seating out front and also an outdoor beer garden in the back that is nice for when its warm out. The food is pretty standard diner food. It's a great place for traditional breakfast food like fried eggs, a denver omelet or a breakfast burrito, plus their breakfast potatoes. Their sandwiches are decent, I've had the blt and thought it was delicious (but then again I don't think I've ever had a blt i didn't like). Their macaroni and cheese is also supposed to be really good. Nothing about the food is healthy and the food is very heavy, so prepare to leave in a food coma. It's the kind of comfort food that I have to be just in the right mood for. So I might be back if that particular craving hits again! read more

I finally made it here! I was super excited, but left thinking , "meh". Service was very friendly, though a liiiiil' slow..even when it was not super busy. The place smells like an elderly relative's basement ( gotta be the stack of ancient board games near the wall, or the Leif Garrett LPs), but thankfully the smells of the hearty cookin' overpowers that. I tried the tuna melt. ' Twas a bit busy for my taste, but still good. The curly fries, on the other hand, were superb. I think if I'd go here again I'd try the "cult hit": chicken and waffles. Hm. When I lived in Roscoe Village this was one of my favorite brunch spots and I came here often. I always enjoyed the green eggs and ham, chilaquiles and whatever they call the breakfast burrito with eggs and chorizo. I came back on Sunday after not visiting for almost 2 years and was underwhelmed. The coffee was not as good as I remembered (although it is a nice touch that you can have free coffee as you wait for a table if it's crowded) and my breakfast was so-so. I got the waffle, which was just okay and the accompanying fruit salad was equally just, well, okay. My fiance and sister-in-law had pancakes which were also not anything special. I love the decor and would go back again, but stick to the egg dishes and trade the coffee for a mimosa or bloody mary. read more

I love this place. Their chilaquiles are the best around. The tuna melt is to die for. And the twinkie tiramisù and Bananas Foster are outstanding. I've officially decided that Kitsch'n is my favorite brunch spot in Chicago. I've actually never had lunch or dinner there, but the brunch is unbeatable. The menu is creative without being over-the-top, the price is right and the food is dependably good. Also, I've never had to wait for a table, which is rare among Chicago bruncheries. I've had several things, but this morning I had the brunch BLT, and ended up getting a bloody mary because someone at the table next to us had one and it looked so good. Both were very, very good. My husband had the chilaquiles and he loved it too. The best part--both meals (and the cocktail) only ran us $30. Although I've heard so much about their breakfast, I have only been to Kitsch'n for dinner, and it has suited my needs every time. If you want a "home-cooked" meal, but are too lazy/tired/culinarily-challenged to cook, come to Kitsch'n. I love me a good chicken sandwich, and the southern fried chicken sandwich is everything that I wanted it to be and more. My boyfriend had the meatloaf which was equally delicious. Also FYI - While there for dinner, I over heard one of the owners talking about their breakfast and he said that Sundays are a mad house, but early Saturday is usually pretty relaxed and not too crowded. read more

The food is great! Love the Vesuvio Salad, steak sandwich, chilaquiles and especially the crusted french toast with raspberry sauce. BUT.... Try to go in the summer because there's a big difference between Kitsch and moth balls. I love the vintage charm but it really smells musty (grandma's rec room musty) and that's an appetite killer. Foiled in our plans to finally hit up Victory's Banner, because they were apparently out on some vision-quest, we wandered up the street and settled on this place for Saturday brunch. Yeah, it's a low-rent cutesy name, but they had a tofu scramble on the menu so at least their hearts are in the right place, right? Well, maybe. Said tofu "scramble" was cubed tofu fried in a cup of olive oil with some flaccid vegetables and a mote of spice (and came with cheese on it, though that was not noted in the menu. Seriously? You realize most of the people ordering tofu at brunch are probably vegan and might just assume tofu scramble means no cheese. Having to ask all the time hurts us more than it hurts you). There was a breakfast burrito too, which I'm told was also phoned-in. The coffee was ok, and the servers were sluggish and boring. And there was this aging ex-hipster couple sitting next to us... and she was like 8.5 months pregnant, and they didn't speak a word to each other the entire time we were there. I wish 1.5 stars was an option. Service is HORRIBLE. Seriously. After we waited in confusion for the first 5 minutes at the restaurant, we finally saw the hostess, put our names in and waited. Wait time wasn't bad. Instead of walking us to the table, the hostess told us to sit at "the leftover table". I didn't like how that sounded, but I guess it was a telling tale to how the rest of our experience would go. First of all, the dining room was pretty dirty. Food and trash all over the floor. Then the food took about a half hour to come out of the kitchen. During this time, we weren't offered any kind of refills. When the waitress finally came around and we asked for refills, she totally forgot and just disappeared again. It didn't really seem like anyone there has their act together. Food wasn't much to write home about. I got a BLT that had decently soggy bread, but the flavor was ok. I probably would have given this place one star if my husband didn't like his chicken and waffles as much as he did. Then, of course, we had to wait forever to pay for the check. I definitely didn't think that it was worth what we paid. Would much rather go to a number of other places for breakfast/brunch. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place... I guess I am supposed to like it because it is in a trendyish neighborhood and everyone else thinks its great. I just don't feel it with this place. The food was average. I had Chicken and Waffles which was bland, the chicken was overcooked and you get half of waffle. When you think about it I got half a waffle and an overcooked chicken thigh for eleven dollars. My wife enjoyed most of what she got and I frankly can not remember what it was. We also got what they called a Kitsch'n Twinkie Tiramisu that was just bad. It was so chalky and flavorless. I actually felt bad when the server asked me how it was because I looked at her and just said "okay". I feel like she was genuinely disappointed that we didn't like it. The fresh strawberries were the best part of the dessert. The service was fine and polite. The staff kept our drinks full and our plates were cleared quickly. When we asked our check came promptly. I really don't have a gripe with the décor or feel of the place. I think it should be cleaned more often. The parking can be rough because there is only street parking. This is my second visit here for brunch - once on a Saturday and this time on a Sunday. Both times were busy and both times were fabulous! In fact, the second time exceeded my expectations. Where to start? How about the cooked from scratch, home-style food? The menu goes way beyond the typical brunch choices. I had a huge veggie omelet the first time and a BL&T, that featured candied bacon and a egg on top sandwich - both were delicious. It was very predictably crowded on both Saturday and more so on Sunday but with a reservation, there was no wait. There are 3, separate eating areas - outside in front, inside the actual restaurant and my favorite, the patio behind the restaurant, which has umbrella tables and much more. 3.5 stars: A-OK food. Fun, quirky and cool place to hang out with friends. I came here a few times for the breakfast/brunch menu. The food is comparable to the Orange, which is just down the block. So nothing too special, except this place gets an extra half star because I liked the drink selection and the kitschy (duh), quirky decor and outdoor seating in the back (beer garden). Also, I never had a problem with their service. Their healthier sounding selections (like the Basil, Pesto&Veggie Omelet) are just that - kind of bland and not too memorable. I don't know if I this place on a bad day or what, but I was not impressed. I was there on a Sunday around 11:30 am. It wasn't as busy as I would have expected for a Sunday brunch, so I was excited. Unfortunately, that is where my excitement ended. I ordered the breakfast burrito. I was brought pancakes. When the waitress asked about the mix-up, I stated that I had ordered the breakfast burrito - the one with the veggies. The second plate that was brought WAS a burrito; however, it was a burrito with sausage. Once again, the waitress clarified my order and headed off to the kitchen. Eventually, I received my meal (after my friend had finished hers). The waitress DID comp the meal, which was great. The food is good (the Bloody Mary's are outstanding). I haven't decided if I will give it another try. read more

Great place for brunch, full of goofy 70s nostalgia stuff. I actually like the new branch a little better, with a seemingly expanded menu and service, but when in the neighborhood, this is just as good as Victory's Banner down the street for great omelettes and pancakes. read more

Astoundingly, I had not been to Kitschn since BEFORE YELP EXISTED. I know, mind-boggling. A friend and I popped in during a long walk on St. Patricks Day, and it proved to be an excellent place to hide from the drunken St Patty's masses (mostly. the parents fo the family next to us were WASTED, and their two little kids were wild as a result. Luckily, they left quickly). We sat outside and had a leisurely brunch-- burrito for me, green eggs and ham (minus the ham) for her. We were both super pleased. Apparently I should have tried the chilaquiles! Our waitress was honest (I love that) and actually advised against them during high-traffic brunch hours because the tortilla chips are not made fresh, whereas during less busy hours the chips are made to order. Since nobody likes stale chips (note: Earwax), we avoided the chilaquiles. Our food was great anyway, but it probably would have been better if we had been hungover; I can't eat greasy diner-food all the time, but sometimes its necessary. Anyway, I really can't believe I haven't been to Kitsch'n sooner! What a sweet little spot, serving a mean side order of mac and cheese! Truly a space that is best seen to be understood with a menu of items both standard and unique it was just after the 8:30am opening that I approached the deceptively sizable space and entering through unlocked doors I immediately became confused, the quirky décor with bedazzled album covers and Tony the Tiger smiling back as The Four Tops played overhead, but not a human to be seen behind the counter or in the kitchen beyond. Deciding to investigate further only after shouting "hello" it was onward to the back room that I progressed and again finding the space empty I was admittedly startled when a small woman emerged from the storeroom, the look on her face likely similar to mine as we both laughed at the circumstances - the cooks arriving a bit later than usual and thus requiring her to start the stoves and gather items to begin service. At this point more than a bit amused it would be mere moments before I found a seat and with the first of several cups of Intelligentsia's House Blend poured into a bottomless cup a three-part order was placed - the opening duo arriving in expedited fashion from a kitchen who needlessly apologized more than once. Admittedly a bit more expensive than one would expect for food that could best be described as 'fun' it was with the restaurant's signature chicken and waffles that I began and although the bird itself was a bit underwhelming the waffle and butter did an admirable job of steering the ship, though a mere half of the crunchy, golden disc seemed chintzy at best. Improving with subsequent plates my attention soon turned to buttery brioche tossed in shreds of soft coconut and while pineapple could have stood to be sweeter the raspberry syrup helped, an overall lightness to the dish proving a stark contrast to dessert - a pair of America's favorite snack cakes infused with coffee and cocoa amidst a sea of whipped ricotta that tastes far more refined than the concept would seem. read more

The first visit was pretty good. We had a "boxed lunch" served up in a tin lunch box and it was tasty, and we had good service. The second time was for brunch and the service was painfully slow but the food quality was still good. The last time (and it will be the last time) I went it was nearly 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged our presence in the restaurant, the service was slow and spotty, despite us being one of only 6 customers in that day, and then even paying the check was like pulling teeth. We actually set the stop watch on our phone and it was nearly 7 minutes from the time they dropped off the check until the time they took it back to run the card! We never got refills, we wanted to order dessert and never even were given the opportunity and the food.... while good, was not nearly good enough to compensate for the HORRIBLE service. P.S. Our neighborhood choice for brunch. Obviously it helps that it's a block down the street, but there really is a lot to love about Kitsch'n. The food is a great mix of brunch food and entrees for later. I love it for brunch simply because they have a great mix of savory and sweet brunch plates. I'm a big fan of the chicken and waffles, huevos locos and smokey chicken omelet. Jess swears by the B.L.T. - not sure what they do to it, but she found god because of it. Just kidding - she really likes it though. The service is always very good and the decor is hilarious even if you've been there 100 times (which I have). If you're hitting brunch, I recommend trying to get there before the 11 pm rush. Overall, a much loved neighborhood brunch spot, and good for dinner in a pinch as well. read more

Tasty! :) I love that their menu has a variety of things you would typically never try, yet the combinations are amazing. The coffee is excellent, i'd say better than starbucks. I went there today for breakfast with colleagues from work. I'm not a huge north side fan because there is NEVER any parking but since it was 10:00 a.m. on a Friday morning I found great parking on Damen street. I had the GREEN EGGS AND HAM because I'm a teacher. Loved it!!!! My friend had the chilaquiles and my other friend had coconut crusted french toast dipped in raspberry sauce. Everything was fabulous. The place is a bit small but I liked the coziness of the place. The servers were friendly and attentive but not overly annoying like some places. I will DEFINITELY go back to this place! read more

Second time I've been here and will definitely be back for more! The Bloody Mary is one of the best I've had in the city. Lots of flavor but not overly spicy. This time I got the Coconut Crusted French Toast - to die for. The raspberry sauce on the side is sooo good, could easily use two sides. The French Toast itself is almost doughy it's so soft, but the coconut crust gives it a sweet crunch. I also ordered a side of hash browns to share - the rosemary leaves in these really did it for me, so much flavor! Service was great too. Got two meals and a side for under $35. Restaurant size is a little small, so make sure to come early because this place is always full! Great for people of all ages. read more

My first foodie stop in my visit to Chicago. I asked my girlfriend for somewhere that had brunch and mimosas, and without a blink of an eye, we were on our way to Kitsch'N. On a Monday morning, we were led into a quiet beer garden with random, artistic tables and art. We started with the deluxe mimosas, and the rest is history. Food was outstanding, service was respectful to the fact that we were sitting for over an hour chatting and catching up, (some servers give you the evil eye for camping at tables), and genuinely wished me a happy stay in Chicago. The food is pretty good. I've had good and just okay experiences here, so it's never been bad, really. I like the atmosphere for the most part, though on a busy Sunday, it can get kind of dirty. Service has always been adequate. No complaints there, though I don't like that they don't have a hostess stand when you come in, so you just stand in the doorway, looking lost until someone sees you. I honestly have no idea why people wait so long to get in here. The food is pretty good, but it's a bit on the expensive side for "comfort foods". I'm planning on going here this weekend because my mom's in town and she loves the place, but I'm already trying to find a time when it won't be busy and annoying. That said, I've had their chilaquiles (decent but by far not the best I've had), chicken & waffles (also decent but very dry), the falafel sandwich (dry and not much flavor) and the black bean soup (DELICIOUS!). I've wanted to try the twinkie tiramisu, but they're sold out of it EVERY time I'm there! The menu is fun and out-of-towners would probably enjoy it for that and the atmosphere, but it's not one of my staples even though I live right around the corner. "God damn delightful." That's exactly what I said to my boyfriend as our mid-afternoon wrapped up at Kitsch'n on Roscoe. And that's exactly what it was. We popped in a few days ago to grab some eats after perusing the Roscoe Village neighborhood in search of the perfect apartment. Wow, am I glad we did. Because we drank our faces off the previous night, we didn't even want to THINK about alcohol, so I can't comment on cocktail quality, but I can say that a Tang martini or a Purple Haze Vodka Lemonade rarely sounds like a bad idea. I had a cup of the kids' mac & cheese, he had a cup of chili. YUM. The chili was different in a fantastic way, and though the mac & cheese reminded me a touch of the blue box, I still thought it had a slight edge to it that gave it a bit of grown up appeal. He had the adult mac & cheese entree. I had the BLT. I don't even like bacon and this sandwich was pretty spectacular. Curly fries were crisp and seasoned just right. He said his dish was simply stunning. I mean, as stunning as comfort food can get. Well, nothing says "I'm a fat kid" like more food after a meal like that, but we had to try the Twinkie Tiramisu. Oh. My. GOD. It was freakin' great! So creamy, and just the right size...I really despise restaurants that overload their patrons with food. And the coffee was Intelligentsia, which is never bad, in my opinion. Our server was great, too. We didn't realize that she had just been waiting for us to clear out so she could wrap it up and get out of there, but she never once rushed us, although, I must admit, if she had mentioned it, we would've hurried our dumbasses up a bit. No frills brunch spot with a cozy atmosphere. I've never had to wait longer than 20 minutes to be seated. There is an extensive selection of brunch spots in Roscoe Village, but I always find myself coming back to Kitsch'n for their great service, and casual ambiance. Bonus - cute outdoor patio during the summer months (covered in the winter) From what I've had, I'd say stick to the breakfast/brunch items - and if you have the option to add pulled pork to anything, do it. I'm not sure if it's that Kitsch'n does pork well, or if it's my love of pork in general...either way you can't really go wrong. read more
