I have been a donor for several years and sponsored one of their permanent residents, Gobbles for a year. When my 18 year old tabby, Figgy, passed away in December, I wasn't planning to adopt another cat anytime soon. But, then Kitten Rescue posted a picture of an orange tabby who reminded me so much of my beloved Figgy that I just had to go meet him. It was pretty much love at first sight. Kitten Rescue has policies in place to ensure all their cats are adopted out to good homes like completing an adoption questionnaire and a home visit. This may seem like a lot of trouble to go through to adopt a cat, but that's what I like about this rescue organization. They really care about the well being of their rescues long after they are adopted. And after having visited their sanctuary, I know that every cat that comes into their care is indeed lucky. I started fostering with Kitten Rescue about a year ago and what a great organization it is. Granted, I am a bit biased since we have "foster failed" with two kittens who are now permanent loved family members of our household. Kitten Rescue and its volunteers are really dedicated to finding the right home for them. Some of the negative reviews have touched on wanting a kitten but Kitten Rescue not letting kittens go to homes alone...many rescue organizations have this rule but this is better for both the kitty and the parent. Kittens have a lot of energy and if there is another kitten for them to play with, they will expend a lot of that energy with each other rather than resorting to the parent. We had a foster kitten and when his two brothers got adopted w/o him and he was alone for a week before we got a new foster kitty to pair with him, he def became a bit more rambunctious and started biting us more in an effort to play. We're newer foster parents having only fostered a few cats but we have had quite a positive experience so far with both the organization, volunteers and other foster parents. We will continue to help out when we can! read more

I hope they treat the animals well since they are pretty nasty with people. You would think the point is to try and get these cats adopted but they sure as hell going about it the wrong way. After writing my first review, the President of KR - Ben reached out to me trying to resolve what happened. I ended up visiting the KR sanctuary and this is what I learned: 1. They are set on not adopting out kittens younger than 4-6months to families without another pet. Sometimes you have to have another cat OR adopt 2 at the same time for behavioral purposes as they grow up so they don't develop unwanted behaviors like biting. 2. Some of the volunteers there are not the most personable and you can tell they are REALLY particular on who they adopt out to. (understandable) But I think they could work on making people feel a little more welcome. Sandra is amazing and super friendly she helped me look around and is experienced raising kittens with dogs. Dawn was nice too she did my home check and took care of my adoption. Make sure to ask their policy on what kind of home the kitty you like can go to so you're not disappointed after spending time falling for one. The sanctuary itself is pretty awesome though, They have so many cats and have really cool cat trees and rooms where they live. Besides a few of the drab volunteers they do good things for the cat community. I adopted the perfect 6.5 month old kitten from them and I love him to pieces. read more

I actually volunteered for this organization for a year while fostering cats and doing TNR. As an animal rights activist I want people to know that while there are many rude volunteers as I saw Saturday after Saturday at adoptions, it is critical that you adopt and do not give up and buy an animal. I absolutely agree that most of the volunteers are rude and seem to have lost sight of what should be the mission of the organization. Instead of putting the interest of the cats first these people seem more interested in being gatekeepers and feeding off the power they get from it. It is a shame. But please don't let organizations like this deter you from adopting!! Try your local shelter. read more

ZERO STARS! {it made me pick at least 1 though} let it be known that if you run a non-profit kitty rescue, DO NOT follow this business plan: showcase kitties at PETCO in Beverly Hills like you want to get them adopted...let me spend 2 hours bonding with 1/begging my better half to get him for us...upon his agreeing, require us to fill out detailed adoption paperwork...interrogate us about our personal finances/relationship {"how will you afford the vet?", "who will the cat belong to if you break up?"}...still promising to deliver kitty 2 days later but But BUT. instead! ...call the potential cat owner that day {that you've lead to believe actually IS the cat's owner} to further nag about unrealistic situations {"where will the cat live if you leave town?" ...as though i have any money to vacation?!?!?!? "oh don't worry, he'll stay at the finest kitty hotel in Beverly Hills while i do that drug tour of Ibiza i've been coordinating. nothing to worry about!"}...yet still throw in a low blow about approving of our interaction back at PETCO {because you're the behavior analysis goddess?? hA! i pity your emasculinated spouse} then hang up {this is still 2 minutes into the conversation mind you} with "oh something's come up, i'll call you right back" but then you don't. and also, don't answer my calls when i call you back for a week. so yah, THAT RIGHT THERE?? that's probably the worst business plan ever for a non-profit kitty rescue. but Kitten Rescue seems to think that's okay. so i went ahead and let the better business bureau know of this inefficiency. {geez, as any successful entrepreneur/drug dealer knows, you simply can't get hooked on your own product. feline or otherwise} nothing against their furry products, the kittens are the real victims here! poor needy psycho cat women named Esther. read more

Since I am very familiar with MARC LEPSON who left the illiterate review with a single star, I will just hit only the significant disturbances he caused during his time "volunteering" with KR. Mr. LEPSON is a chronic pathological liar and has been proven to be so. He claimed upon enthusiastically applying to become a volunteer,that he worked for the vet INSIDE the Petsmart in CAnoga Park. That would be the Banfield Hospital across the aisle fom the Kitten Rescue enclosure. Mr. LEPSON asserted this on MULTIPLE occasions. Sensing a tremendous ill feeling upon every interaction i had with him,I checked with three different managers if in fact, mr. LEPSON works at the Banfield inside Petsmart. On all three inquiries it was said that he did not. Let me not forget to mention the creepy way he spent 9 hours wandering inside the store, fielding questions from customers as if he was a Petsmart employee, to the point that management complained about his interfering with business. And last but certainly not least in mr. Lepson's short lived but bipolar volunteer duties, he felt it necessary to not only bring his girlfriend and her cat to the enclosures, which in terms of illnesses and liabilities is unwise and not allowed; and then proceeded to lie about not having enough time to perform the simple caretaking duties within the 9 hours he spent at the store. Needless to say i would recommend anyone steer clear of Marc LEPSON and his cupcake business Pink & Black. He's unstable and sociopathic. read more

It all began with this tuxedo kitten named Miyagi. I got in contact with the foster parent and was forewarned that the kitten had been sick with runny stool, excess gas, testicles not yet dropped (therefore not yet neutered), and 1 lb lighter than his sister. I spoke to my cat's vet and asked them for their opinion. They said it sounded like a parasite, possibly Giardia. A woman named Linda who is one of the people that work for Kitten Rescue had been in contact with me trying to help me adopt (when in all actuality I think she was just trying to get me to adopt this kitten to maybe get it off their hands). I expressed my concern to the foster parent and Linda about the kitten's conditions and it being something that could be contagious. I made them aware that I would not want to make my cat susseptable to getting sick from this kitten. They both assured me that what the kitten had was definitely not contagious. So I set up a date to meet the kitten. The kitten was very cute so I told the foster parent I wanted him and we set up a home check date for a few days later. I as well asked her for the number of the vet Miyagi had been seeing to get the vet records. The vet faxed me 18 pages of reports worth of problems!!!!!!!!!!! The kitten had been numerously hospitalized and on all kinds of medications. Worst of all, the kitten was diagnosed with Panieukopenia (aka Feline Distemper or Cat Plague). Distemper is INCREDIBLY contagious. I know this because I adopted a dog once from a shelter who became very ill (from a cold, to being lethargic, to temperment changes, to biting people, to psnemonia) eventually the vet diagnosed the dog with Distemper (thousands of dollars later) and told me I must put him down. This resulted in me writing an email to Linda about being concerned after reading his medical records and telling her the story of my old dog that had Distemper. I asked her why I was told what he had was not contagious. I explained to her how contagious it is and how vets usually quarantine animals with Distemper. I expressed how the last thing I would ever want would be my cat to get this. I stated "I had no idea rescue organizations would even release kittens with Panieukopenia". I also asked why Miyagi hadn't been tested for FeLV/FIV testing or dewormed. She responded basically telling me "the most important thing for you to know right now and something I thought you already knew was that Miyagi is no longer available for adoption. After you met him and were not sure if you wanted to adopt him Lisa got contacted by a family that was interested in Miyagi" and that "since we were not sure you were going to adopt..." blah blah blah "we went ahead and adopted to that family." and that Miyagi went home two days AFTER I had met him and said I wanted him. I NEVER said I wasn't sure about adopting the kitten. THIS IS THE BIGGEST COP OUT EVER!!! They knew I was going to adopt him (**before I saw his medical records**). IF YOU ADOPT FROM HERE AND THEY SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE ANIMAL BEING SICK, BE SURE TO GET THE VET RECORDS!!! DON'T TAKE WHAT THEY SAY FOR FACE VALUE. DECEIVING! read more

I just wanted to share our experience with Kitten Rescue. It's a very long story so please bear with me. We really wanted to adopt a pair of kittens. We got in touch with Evelyn about a kitten named Wendy. We went to the Petco location and met her, but unfortunately someone else already adopted her. She then showed us the other kittens available, and we fell in love with a Tabby/Siamese pair. We were told that the foster parent wouldn't be there until 3, so we waited over an hour to meet the lady. At around 3, we were told she just came back and we went to say our greetings. I will not mention names because I don't want to put her on the spot, but let's call her Suzie. The moment I was introduced to Suzie, I did not feel the same warmth/welcome feeling that I felt with Evelyn. I was in fact a bit intimidated and scared of her for some reason. Anyways, she basically read our application that was forwarded to her through Evelyn for maybe 2 minutes and then said "Sorry I'm really busy today. I have to drop them off at their foster parents place. I'll get in touch with you tomorrow." I don't understand the hastiness since I would think she would want to find the pair a good home; it came off as a bit harsh, but I was ok with it. I waited for what seemed forever (bc we really wanted this pair) and she finally emailed back, but it wasn't what I was expecting. "Thanks for your interest in the pair of tabby kittens you met at Pasadena Petco yesterday. Last night when I took them back to the woman who rescued them and is fostering them and told her there was a potential home for them, she panicked and said she is not sure now that she wants to adopt them out -- she has become attached to them and may decide to keep them. I told her she will have to decide soon so she and her husband are thinking it over. So, for now this pair is not available, sorry. If you don't find another pair to adopt soon, feel free to check back with me in a couple of weeks. Thanks." I was so shocked/disappointed. Why would they put them up if they didn't want to find homes for them, I don't understand; but I guess it happens. I emailed back saying sorry to hear, please let me know if they change their minds, etc. I also asked if their litter mates were available (also saw them at Petco). I never received an email back. Since Suzie wouldn't respond, I explained my situation to Evelyn and she was very understanding. She said she would look into the litter mates and also mentioned another pair of kittens that we might like. A few days later, I see on adopt-a-pet that there's a pair of Tabby/Siamese kittens. I thought they looked oddly familiar and decided to read their bio. My first thought was no way, it can't possibly be them, otherwise the lady would've (should've) emailed me. I pressed 'email foster parent' and sure enough, it was Suzie. I emailed her and asked if they were available for adoption to which she just responded with "Yes." ??? Who does that ??? Shouldn't she care more about the kittens and be like do you want more information about them. Anyways I emailed back again and basically asked when I could see them/if they were the same pair/i believe she already has my app. Guess what. No response. I ended up emailing Kitten Rescue directly and asked if they could find out if the pair were available/if Suzie was just avoiding me/sorry if I am wrong, etc. Ben (I believe he's the owner of KR) wrote back saying "Thank you for the email - for someone who appears to be getting the runaround, you wrote the nicest email I have ever seen." and said he would look into it. I ended up losing hopes and decided to contact a diff rescue bc I knew it probably wouldn't work out. After going to a diff rescue event this afternoon, Suzie ended up calling me. She basically said "Hi, this is Suzie. Sorry I've been so busy and didn't have a chance to message. I didn't realize you were the same Mindy that applied for the pair earlier. I just want to be honest/upfront with you. I am reluctant to give you the pair bc you're still a student and you're not financially stable. I know I'm old and see the world differently. I'm sure you guys are really nice." blahblahblah. You get the gist. I'm appalled. Yes, we're 21, but it doesn't mean we're not stable. Yes, I'm a student, but I'm pretty sure I make enough money monthly to take the pair to the vet/get supplies/etc. At the other rescue, they didn't even ask me if I was financial stable. They told me that I turned in a great application & when we met, they were so warm and genuinely seemed to care about what kind of home their kittens went to. I'm sure Kitten Rescue has amazing volunteers (such as Evelyn), but I don't understand why people like Suzie are there if they're not going to respond and also not be welcoming. My wife and I found two kittens (brother and sister named Salem and Simba) on Kitten Rescue's website that we were eager to adopt. I left a message on Kitten Rescue's phone and then sent emails to mail@kittenrescue.org as well as to the kittens' foster parents explaining that we had instantly fallen in love with Salem and Simba when we saw them because they reminded us of a beloved cat we had who was no longer with us and who we missed dearly. I told them we were eager to meet Salem and Simba and asked them to please let them know if they were still available. I have never heard back from anyone. No phone call. No email. I don't know were these people are from but where I come from we respond to heartfelt emails that offer to help. Kitten Rescue is claiming to place Kittens in caring homes and they don't even bother to respond to my email? I'm actually speechless. I've never posted a review on Yelp in my life but in this instance I felt compelled to let others know of my experience with this organization. I think you're better off looking with more compassionate people to find a kitten to bring into your home. read more

I contacted this animal shelter/rescue center because I found an older black cat, 13 years old, here and that is exactly what I am looking for. So I contacted them for adoption of this kitty. When I was contacted back from Kitten Rescue, in LA, I was rejected from adoption for not living close enough to this shelter. I told them I found that response completely irresponsible, They would rather have an animal sit in their shelter over having a good home adopt an animal because I don;t live near the animal shelter. I found a stray kitten on the street that was not in good condition. I wanted to adopt the kitty but he had fleas crawling all over him and he was hardly moving. I didn't know how bad it was or what needed to be done. I searched for where to take him and the vets told me I would be financially responsible for this kitten but I wasn't even sure if he would make it through the day. I couldn't just leave him in the street or drop him off at a shelter. I found Kitten Sanctuary and they were amazing! I took the kitten in and they gave him stuff for the fleas and other meds to help get him back on his feet. They were so sweet and helpful and sent us home with tons of helpful information! I adopted a kitten from Kitten Rescue about a year ago, and ended up with the perfect cat. Kitten Rescue has an exhaustive application, though it's not invasive nor does it ask unnecessary questions. It's not really that long; you can fill it out in a few minutes. The "home check" isn't as scary as it seems: basically, the foster mom came over to drop the cat off and made sure the kitten was adjusting. I like that they have a thorough application because it means that they really care about their cats. It seems that the majority of their cats are fostered, which is great for a couple of reasons. First, it means you're going to get a happy, socialized cat. Second, the foster mom/dad will be able to tell you a little about the personality of the cat you're getting, so there are no surprises. This is especially helpful if you, like me, have an existing cat that you want the new cat to get along with. The people who foster for Kitten Rescue are helpful with any question you might have, and for $120 you get a fully vaccinated, dewormed, spayed/neutered cat or kitten. If I ever wanted another cat, I would definitely adopt with Kitten Rescue again. read more

I sent in an application for a cute little dog, and didn't hear back from them for 1 week. When I did hear back, they proceeded to tell me that I wasn't "good enough" to adopt this rescued dog because I was going to have it sleep in the laundry room in a doggy bed, and it was used to sleeping in a human bed under the covers. Also, I was going to allow it to go in the backyard! I didn't realize that these 2 things were considered unfit treatment of pets??? Or animal abuse?? I'm not sure. But our pets are taken very good care of. These people are ridiculous. These are animals, not human beings! Come on, let's put things in their right perspective, people!!! After losing one of our two cats, the remaining cat became very lonely and needy. He had never been alone and we decided he really needed a new cat friend to socialize with. After finding by chance a sweet cat at a Kitten Rescue adoption event, we began the adoption process. Her foster mom ultimately decided she couldn't bear to part with her - which is fine! I am happy she remained in what I'm sure is a good home. My issue came when we then wanted another cat. We didn't have a specific one in mind, but expected that it wouldn't be a problem to have at the very least some candidates fairly quickly. We were put in touch with a coordinator who assured us that she had kittens available, and would meet with us the following day. The next day she called and said she had no kittens, and was too busy to come anyway. We tried contacting them a couple more times, but after a week of trying to find a kitten with them, while our cat was becoming increasingly distressed, we decided to adopt from another rescue that had an interest in adopting their cats and less than 24 hours later we were welcoming our new kitten to our home. I am sure Kitten Rescue cares very much about their work and their animals. It's very clear watching them interact with the cats that they really do love the animals and I would still recommend them. It's just unfortunate that they dropped the ball on such an easy adoption request. read more

I'm new to cats. I had a dog growing up, but never cats. My girlfriend had been interested in us getting a cat for years and it was finally time. I read Cats for Dummies and learned as much as I could. We went to adoption events and looked online for potential cats. My gf found Kitten Rescue. The book stresses that demeanor/personality is most important in finding the right cat. I've learned the right foster parent is even more essential. Why? They can tell you all about the cat's personality, habits, potential playmates - everything. Not only that, but Kitten Rescue has the kittens ready to go with their shots, neutering and correct diet. Pretty good deal for the price. We had two wonderful fosters, Teri and Christy. We made the mistake of trying to select two random kittens and put them together. This often times works fine, but for us, one of the otherwise normally very sweet cats, became very aggressive. We hated having to do it, but we had to return him. Kitten Rescue has a 5 day no questions asked return policy (you can return later, but without refund). Our fosters were wonderful in helping us not feel bad and that this kind of thing happens all the time. Teri had provided us with Juliet (the one we kept) and suggested his brother, Kent, who she also fostered. They're brother and sister and were already best friends. It worked out perfectly and we couldn't be happier. Post adoption Teri has been phenomenal. We've bounced all sorts of questions off her regarding food, vet recommends, etc. You can tell she truly cares about the well being of these cats and enjoys seeing them go to good homes. I highly recommend using Kitten Rescue if you're looking for a cat or kitten. I can't say enough good things about them. read more

My wife and I just adopted a cat from Kitten Rescue at their Tuxedo cat event over the weekend and I cannot express what a great organization they are. They truly care about the cats that they work so hard to save and it blows my mind that they do it all mostly through the kind hardheartedness of volunteers. If anyone reading this is on the fence about adopting a cat I urge you to do it. You'd be saving a life and gaining a companion. I've read some ridiculous reviews on here where people are complaining about one experience that did not go well when they dealt with KR. To those people, I urge you in the future to please not go on social media and bash a non-profit organization. It does damage that does not need to be done when the lives of innocent animals are on the line. Come on people. read more

This is such an unfortunate review to write on Christmas Day. I actually adopted two kittens from here, almost eight years ago and thought that I should come back to them as that was a fairly good experience. In that time, one of my cats developed a congenital heart condition that killed him painfully. I cannot tell you how horrible it is to watch a sweet soul like that suffer the way he did. He was only 7 years old. I shouldn't have lost him so young. That was six months ago and while emotionally I wouldn't be adopting so soon, it is very apparent that his sister needs a companion. I loved his breed (which of course, is not pedigree) of Russian Blue. For some reason there are many, many cat mixes of the RB. I really do think there is some seriously disreputable breeders dumping these animals into the adoption system. I just like what I like and I wanted another RB mix rescue. I could have just gone to a pedigree breeder, but I had in my mind that I was saving an animal that could up being euthanized or never finding a home at all. Everything went well at first for the one individual that actually wrote me back/talked to me on the phone (I inquired about a few animals). We set up an appointment; I did an application early so that we could adopt him quickly. She did try to push several other animals on me. I was polite enough to consider them, and did think about it a lot, but wanted a particular little guy. This was clear, she knows it, I know it. I was worried about the stress of a tree, and presents and all the Xmas stuff and thought maybe we could postpone the process until after. She convinced me to drive half an hour to Encino to meet him and the other cats she wanted me to check out. So we did. Just like I knew would happen, I saw him and just all caution went out the window. I wanted to take my baby home, after all I had supposedly had my application approved, knew everything about him, etc. All we had to do was set up the home visit. I was going to take down all the Xmas crap the very day after the holiday for him. Well, to be polite, I met with one of the other cats too (as they brought them there for that purpose). While this was happening, my cat was being shown to some family that walked in off the street. I know this because I heard them talking about it!! And coming out of the room, I knew the RB was the one and was told specifically that I was the first choice, top of the list if anyone else was interested, blah, blah, all lies. Because not five seconds after I said, "Yes! I'll take him!" did the foster mother tell the walk-in family that he was theirs if they adopted two. There is a whole bunch of b.s that comes after this, about the siblings this and that (I know they were separated because they DIDN'T get along), and how the RB kitten didn't now like other cats because he hissed while being man-handled at a Petco (after being lectured for days on how their behavior at the store doesn't actually reflect on their real personality). I think it actually came down to me not responding to the "Mark of God" on the cat when the foster lady repeated it several times. I will be willing to bet that nice family is not going to handle the near feral cat sibling so well. Good luck with that! Meanwhile, I feel like that experience was especially cruel and there's not a chance in hell that I would deal with them again, ever. This is a very caring group of volunteers and foster parents who rescue cats and kittens about to be euthanized at local shelters. They seem to really care about the pets and if my little boy Scout is any example, the foster parents take good care of the animals. Adoptee cats come to you spayed/neutered, micro chipped and vaccinated. All you have to do is provide the application, the fee, a home and love. The volunteers get to know the personalities of the animals and try to match you with a pet that will do well in your home. They know a lot about cats and will provide much good information to a new pet owner.
