Used to be my favorite sushi place in town, a place I have defended a few times on Reddit when the topic of "best sushi bar" in Reno is broached. Not going to rehash those comments as they no longer apply(except the ambiance is still nice) Place was about empty when I arrived for lunch, the last customer before me finishing up as I was told to take any seat at the bar. Then I was asked by the chef to move to a different seat, specific seat at this empty bar, not an odd request but I mention it because it's important later. Anyway, hostess was nice enough, so was the chef initially. I usually get ala carte sushi as I do not have the appetite to gorge on AYCE. I'm used to getting a little paper to fill out and just getting it all one and done. Instead I got my one roll and waited. And waited. So I mentioned I'm the only one in the place right now right? So another chef comes out while I'm eating my first roll and leans on the counter across from me, staring at the wall behind me, and that's where he remained the whole time I ate, talking to the other chef. Ever had this happen to you? Because it's unnerving as hell, the dude wasn't staring at me but he might as well have. This, compounded by the fact that I finished my roll and sat there waiting for one or the other to engage at all but they were too busy bullshitting and I have my own job to get back to so I left. And I will not be back. So to the guy who was probably the owner who popped in asking how lunch went, well buddy, no wonder you have to ask. Kitzmo is a nice, simple Japanese Restaurant, having served Reno since 2012. We've been here many times. One of the fairly unique items on the menu are the Bento Boxes. The servings are plentiful, filling and delicious. We visited with some family in town. The group ordered the Shrimp Tempura Bento, the Chicken Teriyaki Bento and the Chicken Katsu Bento. The Bento's are served with a cabbage salad, California Rolls, a couple pieces of Vegetable Tempura, Gyoza and white rice, in addition to the main dish. Feedback from the group, the Shrimp Tempura was the best. The Chicken Tempura was quite good and the Chicken Katsu was crunchy and moist. We were most concerned about the Katsu, which can be dry but not on this occasion. Wanting Sushi, I ordered a couple of rolls. The Dragon Ball Roll. Crispy tempura shrimp served with cool cucumber, rich unagi, creamy avocado, spicy crab, and tobiko topped with flavorful teriyaki sauce. Truly a satisfying fusion of textures and flavors. I also had the Rainbow roll, more a stepped up version of the California Roll. The base is a basic California Roll, then they add a colorful combination of tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and tobiko. The rainbow roll offers a medley of fresh flavors from the sea. We went during the lunch hour, so the restaurant was quite empty. Which to be honest was quite nice. Very calm and quiet, allowing our group to converse with ease. The waitress was pleasant and welcoming but not the fastest worker in the planet. Our service was fine but given how empty the restaurant was, it would have been quite easy to have provided a more engaged service. Hands down, one of the best sushi experiences I've had. The place itself as soon as you step in feels very cutesy and reminiscent of a street bar in Tokyo. Great atmosphere! The staff was extremely diligent even though there were so many people when we went in. And the food? Some of the best sushi I've had and an excellent selection from raw to baked and deep fried. This is the only time I've ever not tipped for sushi. Place was empty when we walked in, and the table we were brought to had dishes that were STILL DIRTY. I could see sauce from someone else's stuff. Everything didn't taste very fresh, from the rice that tasted old and stale to the plastic fish. Yep, you read that right. Walked in on a busy Friday and we were approached so quickly, I was surprised. Parking can be limited here since it is in a fenced-in shopping center. Only available spots to eat when we arrived were at the bar, and that's where you get the quickest service- perfect! Friendly, welcoming staff, prompt service and an extensive menu made this place stand out instantly. The tables were all full of families and it appeared to be folks familiar with the staff indicating they were regulars. Decor was clean and classy and the whole place had a comfortable feel to it. My teenager decided on sushi for his birthday dinner on a Saturday night, and with a family of 5 that can be a challenge. I have been to KitzMo a long time back, and decided this may be a good opportunity to return. So glad we did, everything worked out better than I could have expected! We were seated quickly and the server grabbed our drink orders and confirmed we wanted to get the all you can eat (of course we did!). I typically take the lead on ordering and we spread our order across a few appetizers (french fries for the kids, crab rangoon, the usual. We ordered a few different rolls, I always prefer uncooked like the Rainbow roll, a modified California for the kids, and some others. We also ordered a broad selection of nigiri. Red Snapper, Salmon, Mackerel, and Tuna are always a must, with some unagi, and a few others for fun. Everything was great! The rolls were all very well made and delicious. The nigiri all tasted fresh, and even my kids ended up eating a few different nigiri because it was so good. The salmon was so fresh and tender I ended up ordering more as a dessert (don't judge me!) We topped it off with Mango, Strawberry and Chocolate mochi and the server was quick to get us closed out so we can continue with the bday celebration I was very impressed as far as local sushi spots go, I'm usually a bit disappointed by AYCE roll selection but I found many good ones to choose from. Long time sushi spot was our choice for a quick lunch. We did not do the AYCE as we just needed a light lunch, so three rolls for two people. Service was nice, dining room attractive. Restrooms are showing a little wear and tear...clean that darn light switch plate! Large pots of hot tea re-charged us for afternoon tasks. So far, KitzMo, by far, has the best sushi rolls in Reno. I know it will never be authentic than the ones in Japan, but this is something I would eat if I am craving for sushi. This was recommended by a chef once in our sushi class, and he is correct that their sushi rolls are really good, closer to authentic and fresh. A good indication that it is good, the rice is sticky. It means they pour the right amount of rice vinegar and use a correct grain. We dined there twice, and we avail the all-you-can eat sushi and appetizer, which is only around $18 for lunch, and $24 during dinner time. The All-You-Can-Eat is more practical and affordable than having an ala carte. For appetizers, I love their baked-mussels (the mussels tasted fresh, and the cheese was so savory but not overpowering), miso soup tasted legit, and their edamame are fresh. Sorry, this was the only appetizer I tried and kept on ordering. When it comes to their sushi, selections like the raw, the classic, nagiri, and some of its fushions are the best. My most favorite, and the one I kept on ordering was Tobiko Unagi Nigiri (with succulent unagi, spicy crab, wasabiko, and katsu sauce), this is a must try! Their signature Kitzmo rolls are delicious, too: the tempura is crispy, and they are spicy. Although I am not a fan of sushi with creamcheese and sriracha, I stayed away from those rolls. For dessert, I had greentea ice cream. It is a perfect dessert to wash off your palate. I tried last time it's tempura, and they use a batter like in fish and chips. It wasn't like the authentic tempura, that's why I never ordered it again, the second time we were there. The last time we were there, they were about to close, but they still accommodated us and even had our rolls left over to be taken home. The staff and even the manager were very kind, friendly and efficient. I love the fact that they have a sushi bar where you can see someone prepare your sushi. However the restaurant design needs more improvement, like remove the string lights and replace it with Japanese lamps, add some tatami seating, and open the sushi bar more so customers can see clearly how sushi is being prepared. I was shocked to come across so many negative reviews of this place on Yelp because my friends and I all loved it! I have been here numerous times and always have a pretty good experience. One of my first times here, we were impressed by the sushi but had decently long wait times. I have come back several other times since then and that has not been an issue. They now have a new system where you place your completed order sheet on a stand so they can see it up in the air when it is ready to be collected. The inside of this restaurant is a little bit on the smaller side, but there are still several tables plus bar seating. We were surprised that it was almost empty on a Monday night at 6:30pm. We were seated promptly and brought out menus and waters. AYCE sushi is $31.95 here which was pretty reasonable and comparable to other AYCE spots in town. We asked about weeknight specials and were told that AYCE sushi comes with a domestic beer or a specific type of sake on weeknights. The waitress had very soft speech and was difficult to understand. She seemed confused when we ordered our drinks and brought out a few wrong drink orders, but they were quick to fix it when realizing they were incorrect. The service was good throughout the evening, we were there for almost 2 hours and never felt like we were waiting around for someone to come to our table. I loved the system of turning in your order sheets on the little stand, it assured that our order slips were picked up shortly after we finished filling them out. Food was brought out in a timely manner, we were never kept waiting for long. We were a group of 5 and got a lot of different food including appetizers, nigiri, raw rolls, deep fried rolls, and cooked rolls. The AYCE menu includes both the lunch and dinner sushi items, so there was a lot of variety to choose from. My favorite appetizers were the gyoza, mussels, and miso soup. The best nigiri was the yellow snapper! We had several different sushi rolls but many of us agreed that the overall winner was the Mizu Maki. I especially like the ones with lemon slice that have a slight citrus taste to pair with more spicy flavors. We all got a choice of dessert included in our meal, I got the tempura banana which was served warm and was tasty! My friend is dairy-free, the dessert options for her included the tempura banana without whipped cream and the sorbet. She also had tons of appetizer and sushi options to choose from that had no dairy, she mostly stayed away from the cheese stars and any sushi rolls that had cream cheese. This was a solid spot for AYCE sushi that had good prices, quick service, and quality sushi. WOW. What a deal. We got the all you can eat dinner and I'm telling you: the sushi is so good. There isn't a ton of rice on each piece like other places, which is how it should be. The seafood was fresh and well kept. We could tell because none of the sauces were doused on; they perfectly complemented each piece. We ordered like 3-4 times. Everything was excellent. However, recently we were invited to eat here with some friends and was pleasantly surprised that the experience was different enough that I would consider adding it to the rotation. I had the all-you-can-eat sushi and was happy with the different specialty nigiri and sushi rolls. I was also very impressed by my wifes meal, which she ordered a bento box. That bento box came with so much food, which was good for me because I was able to try most of the items since my wife couldn't finish it. It started with miso soup and edamame and the box itself had the main dish (spicy pork), cabbage salad, california roll, and tempura veggies! To top it of the server was nice and attentive. It's been a hot minute since we have had KitzMo, but only because we happened to find other AYCE sushi places that we prefer, no fault to KitzMo. I have always enjoyed their Banzai roll as one of my all-time favorite rolls among my frequented sushi joints, and I still do to this day. Our recent trip back was for their bento boxes! I had a hankering for one of them and KitzMo delivers THE BEST bento box lunch or dinner in the area, in my opinion. You get a lot of food for the price. I enjoyed the beef teriyaki, but I think the chicken teriyaki is still my favorite. My husband ordered the chicken katsu bento and it was great. You get miso soup, edamame, four pieces of California roll, veggie tempura, gyoza, salad, rice and a chunk of juicy pineapple, in addition to a generous portion of your entree selection of protein. If you want to switch up your sushi fix, definitely don't overlook them for their bentos. I absolutely love that they include the small pieces of sushi in theirs. I will always recommend KitzMo for AYCE and a solid lunch or dinner. They are great for accommodating larger parties too. read more

We just tried KizMo for the first time. The service was average. We ordered 2 Bento boxes of Katsu pork. First they bring out miso soup. It's a little on the salty side. Not from scratch but definitely packaged ingredients as It should have been a little clearer broth. The endimine beans were terrible almost uncooked but probably over cooked which made them too chewy and way to much salt. The salad which was a shredded type, no joke it looked like the pre prepped lettuce you get from Jersey Mikes sandwiches. Not enough sesame vinegar dressing it was terrible bland. Now for the basic ingredient rice. It was falling apart as if the didn't add enough rice vinegar and sugar. It actually texture wise was more of a medium grain rice and not a short grain rice. Even the 3 pieces of sushi was falling apart. Now for the Katsu. You can tell it was frozen breaded cutlets. The cutlet was over cooked as it was dark and not tender as it was over fried. 1 end piece was pretty hard. Almost cracking a tooth hard. When you pay $21.00 for each Bento box you expect a fresh battered cutlet fried to a nice golden color. Rice made near perfect which isn't that hard. Fresh head of lettuce cleaned and cut with enough dressing that it would alter the taste of plain lettuce. All in all I can tell by the Katsu Pork that if we had all you can eat sushi I would have been totally disappointed. These restaurants around town trying to make money at the expense of poor quality at high prices will suffer the inevitable. You can't have it one way. You increase your prices and don't improve the quality then it's a matter of time. We won't be back! read more
