This is our first time visiting here. We were looking to get sushi on our Friday night and our normal spot was packed and we had an opportunity to find a new place that was close to home. I've read through the reviews and it looked like a very good place to go. We were able to get a table of six and they had a lot of options for my kids and a lot of great tasting rolls for my wife and I. The price was great. Ate at Sakana tonight for the first time in years and I am so glad we did! The food was good, the service was great, and everyone was just so kind. My girlfriend and I had AYCE and our nephew had a salmon bento box. Our only real issue was that some of the rolls didn't hold together very well and just sort of fell apart, but it wasn't terrible, and the food was still delicious overall which definitely made up for it. I love how bright and open the place feels too. As an added bonus, they had a movie for kids playing so our nephew was thoroughly entertained through the whole meal. He also really enjoyed his bento. I wanted to make reservations for my group to come in & first I was told they couldn't seat us at 2 pm but they could at 3 pm which was conveniently after their dinner prices started. The group arrived to the restaurant & were seated, with only one other table in the whole place seated. Our server wasn't able to tell us what rolls they brought to us, a little frustrating since we had several people ordering on the same tickets. We had to request drink refills throughout the visit. A couple of years ago we discovered a small place called Sakana Sushi. It was charming, friendly, and somewhat comfortable (can't control sunlight, but they are lax in use of shades.) It became our go-to sushi place and we went about once a month. Then we had a few difficult visits---the regular servers were replaced with people less concerned about customer service. OK, it was still a good place. Then we went once when our server preferred chatting with a customer at another table to paying attention to the rest of us. Then we had one last visit.....explanation follows. Sakana has two locations. I made the error of calling the "other" branch and placing a take-out order. MY ERROR. Then I went to our usual location to pick up the order. I was met with rudeness and ignorance....that's probably NOT the names of the two young people, but that's how I shall remember them. Rudeness said, "NO, not here ... no such order" and Ignorance said, "I have no idea of where the other branch is.....it's somewhere in the Northwest." NOBODY said, "I'm so sorry that happened and sorry for your inconvenience." Bye Bye Sakana....but the evening turned out well. We discovered KitzMo and had a great sit down meal. read more

Sakana Sushi is nothing short of amazing. This has been our number one spot for the last two years. We have been loyal to 2 Tha Joint and Tokyo Sushi in the past. Their appetizers are freshly made in-house as opposed to other joints that order from distributors. I will recommend you to order both the "millionaire" and "bahama" rolls. All of the hand rolls are delicious and fresh. The only thing is that sake is not included in AYCE. Other than that, try it for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Came here for an order of salmon nigiri and the chashu ramen. The salmon was good, fairly standard. The chashu ramen with a soy sauce based broth was really yummy! Excellent ajitama and noodles. The pork belly was just good, not spectacular, but with the broth and other toppings, this was a delicious dish! Some of the better ramen in Reno, but I was sort of sad there wasn't any tonkotsu ramen. Kind of an odd environment, but it appears this may be due to renovations or moving things around. It's a bummer that you can't sit at the bar right now, but if you sit in the front section, you can still watch them making the sushi. Saw some sushi going out in wooden boats, which were adorable. Bare bones staff, so service is just a bit slow, but they clearly work their butts off, so it's OK. read more

I used to go to Sakana Sushi in Somersett years ago so I was stoked to see a location near my new house in Sparks. I would say the menu was pretty different than the other location, but I was excited to try this new spot. The restaurant itself is fairly small, but I do like that the tables are separated from the bar with windows. It's a clean space which gives it a nice vibe. Right off the bat I realized the service was great. They were all attentive and very friendly, which I feel like can be a rarity these days. We did AYCE and got appetizers, nigiri and a bunch of rolls. The Yakiton was probably some of the best I've tried. The nigiri and the rolls were good, however, I feel like rolls could have used more sauces. I felt like a few of them seemed dry. The fish to rice was ratio was good however. Finally, they only had ice cream on the dessert menu, which isn't a deal breaker, but I do think mochi is always well received. All in all, I'd definitely go back but might stick to just certain rolls that are more on the saucy side. read more

I came in after the gym to crush some lunchtime sushi by myself. I was sat at the bar, and right away my waitress was a bit distracted and walked away without getting me a menu. She did drop off an appetizer menu and I checked the seaweed salad. No worries, the sushi chef asked me right off the bat what type of fish I like, I said salmon, tuna, and yellowtail, and he got me a round of sashimi to get me eating. I told him I also love some unagi, and that popped up quickly as well. It wasn't until I'd already eaten much of the food he'd gotten me that he asked if I had a menu, then called for the waitress to hunt one down for me. She was apologetic, and I ordered green tea with her. I start ordering rolls from my chef, and he even pulls a roll out based on my previous interests. Banger! Love it. But eventually I have to flag down another waitress as I don't even have a water yet. I also hadn't been given my green tea or seaweed salad, and we're like 20min into service. New waitress gets me my water, and I'm still slamming awesome rolls from my man behind the bar. He's just killing it. I'm starting to slow down and my seaweed salad and green tea finally show up, and now the first waitress seems to be around more. At no point did I feel like the place was slammed, but I recognize that things happen. Ultimately, I loved the food. The salmon was such good quality, and each roll tasted distinct and was crafted effectively. The cucumber salad was great, with the right amount of vinegar and sesame seeds. All of the sushi rolls had decent flavor. I wish for the vegetarian ones that there were options for just cucumbers and avocados. The sake was flavorful, and good when it was cold. Dessert was either ice cream or a banana sundae, which we thought was included and then we were told it was not. They had the option of vanilla, salted Carmel and green tea ice creams. Im new(ish) to Reno and have worked my way through about 5 AYCE sushi places. Sakana is my favorite so far! This is the only one I've returned to multiple times. I feel like the quality is very consistent. On my most recent visit at the Sushi Bar, the Sushi Chef recommended to me if I wasn't hungry enough for AYCE, I should consider their 22$ dine in option that came with a House Salad, An Appetizer, a Miso soup, 2 Full sized rolls AND dessert. I was having trouble deciding my second roll and the Sushi Chef and I agreed he would surprise me based off the first one I ordered. He knocked it out the park! To top it all off they were served to me on this cute sushi boat! Being that this wasn't ordered as all you can eat I was able to box my left over rolls and take them home. I love Sakana. I'm from the Bay Area/ SF region so I think my expectations for sushi are way too high. It's difficult to find a good AYCE Sushi joint in the bay that's well priced. We have a family home in Sparks that we visit on occasion and so we got together with some family to try Sakana. The decor in the restaurant is really cute and colorful and definitely has great ambiance. They have a TV or two and they were playing pop music pretty much the entire evening. Both servers who helped our tables today were very nice and kind. However, our dinner ended up taking about 2 ish hours because the food would be brought out in batches. We ordered about 10 rolls and we kept getting just two, then waiting twenty minutes, then another two, another twenty minutes, etc. The servers were attentive with drink refills and the starters came quickly but the sushi was just so slow and tbh not very good at all. The tempura shrimp inside the rolls was so fried that it cut the inside of my mouth. All the fish was drenched in mayo and you couldn't taste any of the natural flavors. Every roll ended up tasting almost exactly the same. I think the only one we enjoyed out of all ten was the ultimate salmon which was arguably the simplest one. I saw other tables getting hand rolls and those looked decent. Would recommend another place for AYCE though. read more

Yeahhh... you can probably find better nearby. We ordered 3 different rolls, all of which showed up as California rolls with different toppings - not even close to what we ordered. The waitress swore up and down, that we received exactly what we ordered. So I had to pull up some Yelp photos of the rolls, and even pointed to the penciled in writing on the AYCE receipt, just so there was no discrepancy. This is also the same waitress who told us that she is vegetarian while taking our order... finally our rolls were replaced with the correct order. We had the right fish and rice combinations now, but they forgot the wasabi. This foreshadowed our take-out order, since that roll was missing the wasabi too. -1 star: not resolving an incorrect order in an orderly fashion -1 star: trying to charge us for the rolls when our table paid for AYCE -1 star: constantly having to ask for drinks and drink refills +1 star: sashimi slices are fresh and thick-cut +1 star: sushi rice is on-point The quality of the fish and the rolls when made according to their menu, saved this from being a single-star review. Sakana has been our go to sushi spot for about 2 years now. We have patiently waited the last six months as they seem to have high staff turnover and a hard time finding competent servers. We have suffered through several meals recently where we have received the wrong food and watched ours be delivered to another table. They've had to add the table numbers to the base of each table to help their staff. I tried to be understanding but it has negatively impacted our dining experience too many times. The last of which, we ordered one last round of rolls only to watch our order go to a table next to us. It was late and I was tired. I asked the server if we could replace the order but get it to go since the rolls were missing due to their error. Initially we were told yes that would be fine but then later we were told if we wanted them to go we would have to pay for them separately. We then waited another 20-30 minutes for our food - they didn't even expedite our order. I miss the old Sakana - the one that made our dining experience wonderful. We won't be going back after this last experience, an inability to get one's food seems like the norm now. read more

Yay lunch with my Son, belated birthday treat! Store was closed when we got there, sign said open at 12:00. Waited until about 12:04 and were let in. Happy to be the only ones there so we knew our sushi would be hot and fresh! We started with some appetizers, not too many to leave room for the main course! I had checked the menu beforehand so knew what I wanted so our first order came out quick. I love the fried Godzilla and it was good and hot. My favorite! My Son likes his raw so he had a good selection also including squid and tako which I passed on but he enjoyed. Our waitress didn't know what our orders were when I asked so we had to figure it out ourselves. She was on top of our orders though and was the only server we saw. As someone else said the music was loud and I kept asking my Son to repeat himself. I have to say, I did enjoy The Spartan which was something new to me. It had lemon and cilantro with avocado on top, lots of shredded crab and cream cheese and scallop inside. It was very fresh tasting. The Tundra said it had mango but if there was any I didn't taste it. I do like they don't bring everything out all at once. It gave us time to enjoy our food and not get so full too fast. ( Although my Son had to help me on the rolls I ordered, eyes bigger then stomach like my Dad used to say!) We usually eat here twice a month but noticed the service is going down hill along with the quality of food :( On 12/18 we decided to try the sushi boats but again were disappointed then we found out when we received our bill that we were charged a service fee of 20% for a family of 4! I've never seen this before and we always tip 20%, when I asked the waiter, she said, the system automatically charges a service fee for four or more. The all you can eat sushi here was delicious our first visit and additionally, the service the first time we tried was great Our second visit was a completely different visit which was disappointing because we were looking forward to bringing our son visiting from out of town on our second visit tonight and the service was awful!! It took forever to get our rolls and we were waiting long time in between rolls and servers switched service in the middle of the dinner and didn't bring all the rolls we ordered. When asked if we wanted more rolls, we mentioned that we were still waiting for two more, they went to check with chefs, which took an additional 15 minutes to come back to tell us we received all our rolls. We only received 11 out of 13 rolls ordered and at this point, we were done waiting for so long and were ready to go. Won't be back!! read more

Our food ticket got "lost" and instead of being approached by the server and being asked to fill another, we had to ask about our order after waiting 45 minutes only to find out about our ticket getting lost. Granted, it was a busy Saturday night like it would be at any restaurant. The cooks/chefs made up for the servers because they actually refilled our waters and ran the food to our table. So.... to be really fair and straightforward, my rating goes for the actual sushi and food. The waiters on the other hand kind of made it a little hard to give this place that extra rating to make it a 5 star rating. I have been to place awhile back and I remember it being sushi that I did not necessarily love nor felt it was honestly that good. This time coming here was definitely different from what i remembered the first time coming here. First off, i wanted to say the decorations are such a good touch when dining in. My 9 month old son loved looking at all of the lanterns in the dining room. We did order some mussels , yucatan, calamari, and seaweed salad for some appetizers. (We were pretty hungry). As some of you guys may know, i swear by Hiroba Sushi's mussels in all of Reno/Sparks. But i do have to say Sakana's mussels are actually pretty dang good. The calamari was super good too , really crispy and full of flavor. The seaweed salad was just alright though, there was some frozen bits that were in there. As far as the sushi goes, not like the last time , the sushi was actually really good and I felt the quality of the sushi was very good also. My fiancè and I actually finished all of our rolls that we ordered including the appetizers and miso soup we ordered. It was that good! The miso soup was also very fresh and hot ! Overall, the only things that really made me iffy of our experience was just that fact that it seemed like our waiters were a bit forgetful and disorganized. But i mean it was around the first start of the day. Sometimes I order for lunch since my office is close. I've never had a roll I don't like from here. I love the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon roll and the Sierra roll. Their To-Go specials are decent (2 rolls for $19.99). Aside from the food, I wish they offered a way to order and pay online because it would save me so much time. Sometimes they don't answer the phone so I can place an order before my lunch break and it's frustrating. I've had times when I've wanted to order sushi and had to change my plans for lunch at the last moment because they don't answer, yet I know they are open. I get it, they're probably busy serving customers in person. When I've gone to pick up orders and pay, it's usually only one person working the front, answering phones and serving tables. They definitely need help or, like I previously mentioned, add an online ordering feature to cut down on phone calls and duties for one person. There's not many other sushi places close to work so this is kind of my only option when I want it during the work week. It's not the best sushi I've had in town but certainly not bad by any means.
