So my wife and I went to this place this afternoon at lunch no one was in there which was surprising. It was very clean our waitress did not speak English well but she was so nice she went and got someone else to answer our questions fast that did. They were very attentive and polite I was very surprised at how good the food was and how fresh it was there was no over use of Sauce or rice we could taste every ingredient in each piece which I have to be honest was amazing best Sushi place hands down I have ever went to not just in Reno but in my life. For starters, I've never been to this place, and my first impression wasn't great. I went with a group of eight, and a friend told me the sushi rolls were pretty good. The menu didn't feel very varied--it was mostly the same types of rolls (crab mostly) with different sauces. That may just be personal preference, since I tend to like shrimp rolls (either cooked or uncooked). When we arrived, we were seated in the far right corner. There were other tables nearby, but because we were a large group, it took a while for anyone to take our drink orders. We even had two separate servers come by to ask for drinks. Once we ordered sushi, that's where things really went downhill. We were split across the tables (four people per table), and although we placed our orders at the same time, half of our group didn't receive their sushi until about 30 minutes after the other part of us. It felt like the order process wasn't managed well. Customer service was also inconsistent. We had to keep asking for items we never received, like refills, and we didn't get straws. Even though the restaurant was busy, I've been to other sushi places on busy nights and never experienced service this slow. The only thing I truly liked was the appetizers. The beef teriyaki was the best thing I had--really tasty. I'd recommend that, but only if you have a lot of time to spare, because the wait for food and follow-ups was a struggle. When we tried to order dessert, it took so long for someone to come back that a few people ended up giving up and not getting dessert at all. I used to come to this sushi place because when I first moved here from another state, a friend recommended it as a pretty good new spot. My very first visit was actually quite impressive--I thought for an all-you-can-eat sushi place outside of a casino, it was definitely one of the decent spots in Reno. However, things went downhill on my second visit. I brought a friend from out of state and we sat at the sushi bar. Normally, when you sit at the bar, you can order directly with the chef, but we understood that there might be a language barrier, so we wrote our orders on the paper sheet instead. Still, service was a mess: our appetizer took forever and came out wrong twice, they forgot our tea, and even though there were only two or three tables plus just the two of us at the bar, they kept checking off items on our order sheet that had never been served. My third visit was the absolute breaking point. The waitress--a large woman standing in the back--walked over so painfully slow, with zero energy or interest in working. No smile, no greeting, and she didn't even ask where we'd like to sit until we had to speak up and request the sushi bar. That day, a soccer game was playing on TV. The sushi chefs clearly didn't want to work--they kept turning around to watch the game and chatter among themselves, completely ignoring us. There was no communication whatsoever until we finally had to ask, "Are you guys ready to make our food?" Only then did one chef ask, "Are you ready?" Since we sat at the bar just for some simple nigiri, we wanted to order verbally, but they insisted we write it down. My friend was confused because if we wrote our orders on the same sheet, they'd serve everything on one shared plate. Sitting at the bar means we wanted to order and eat at our own pace on individual plates, so we had to ask for a second order sheet. We then waited nearly 30 minutes for our sushi. Nobody checked on us or asked if we wanted anything else, and they actively avoided eye contact. Our second round of appetizers never arrived--yet again, they marked it as served and handed the paper back! I had to call the server over to ask why it was checked off when we hadn't received a thing. Then my friend submitted a second round of sushi orders directly to the chef. After waiting a ridiculously long time--nearly 20 minutes--we wondered where our chef went, thinking he just stepped away to grab ingredients. Suddenly, the chef next to him picked up our order sheet, muttered something to himself, and handed it back to us. Since his English wasn't great, we couldn't understand what he said, but once again, they had marked our order as complete even though we were sitting right in front of them with zero food! If a chef needs to take a break, they should hand off the pending orders to a coworker, not just vanish without a word. My friend was so frustrated that I finally asked the server why the order sheet was handed back without the food being made. She apologized and offered to tell the chef again, but by then, we were done. Having been disappointed three times in a row, we decided to call it quits, pay the bill, and leave. We will never step foot in this place again. It's really a shame because the owner is Korean. I have Korean friends myself, and I used to own a sushi restaurant too. Korean owners are usually deeply attentive to their customers. During my first visit, the owner personally took care of the guests. But later on, after leaving the floor to non-Korean staff, the service completely tanked. The staff lacked any enthusiasm, urgency, or passion for customer service. They had so many raw options, which was refreshing since a lot of all-you-can-eat sushi places tend to focus heavily on fried or cooked rolls. I was especially excited to see more scallop filling on the menu! Finally something different from the usual mayo filled imitation crab! My favorite had to be the upside down shrimp with scallops (of course)! Also, the affocado! To freaking die for. If youre a coffee lover and want a sweet treat?! This is it! We headed to Kuma Sushi for lunch the other day and although the restaurant was pretty packed; we there just in time when a group was about to leave, so the wait time for a table wasn't very long. They have a unique menu; I can fill up eating just their appetizers-- actually sushi places should offer an AYCE appetizer only option. We ordered a round of drinks along with a round of appetizers: salmon skin salad, tempura shrimp, baked mussels, popcorn scallops, agedashi tofu and fried calamari to start. After a while we ordered some sushi like the Philly Crunch long roll, a Mountain long roll, the Lobster popcorn long roll, a couple of salmon skin handroll and a few nigiris. The long rolls arrived at our table after a little while and everything tasted great. We ordered another round of appetizers: French fries and a double order agedashi tofu (because I really liked it), a cup of udon noodles (just to try) and gyoza, The appetizers were great. The only critique I have during this visit was it took a long time for our nigiris to arrive. The person who ordered it in our party just sat there and watched the rest of us eat while they waited for their nigiris; the rest of us were practically finished by the time the nigiris arrived. We have been here about 3 times. Its been very inconsistent with service. The first time was super slow. The next, was with a large group, and it was super fast. The time it was just my husband and I was so slow. We also sat down as the second table. They had a full staff and it took the longest. The food is good. I rate the roles at a 3, but note. I like simple sushi. So I tried the rolls just to try and see what they taste like. Its good if you like likes of flavor. It removes what people say is the fishy taste. I love the taste of fish. So I typically lean towards nigiri. I will amdit their sashimi salad as a 5/5. I loved it. I thought we could order 1 per round, but thats not the case. Look at the menu and its once per visit. The salmon hand roll is a 1 for me. It was not very crispy and hard to power through. So I dont recommend that, but they do a roll of it. So if you share with friends it might be worth while. The Niger I rate a 3.5/5. There was a lot of rice, but they also give a good size slice of fish. What got me was it didn't have that crisp taste when I ate it. Its hard to explain. The food quality is good. Don't get me wrong. Just the service and my simple taste buds. Its very popular and many locals love it. The lady was very sweet, when we got to speak with her. We went to Kuma Sushi for lunch and I'm glad we did because I already can't wait to go back! The servers were nice and quick and the ambiance inside was chill but upbeat and it was fairly busy during lunch but we did get seated right away. We did all you can eat and our favorite other than the nigiri were the shooting star roll and spicy challenge roll. The beef teriyaki was also really good and tender! Everything we ordered from the sushi to the appetizers was really fresh. We came for the sushi but we were really impressed with how tender, fresh and flavorful the beef teriyaki tasted. Out of all the sushi I've tried, this one stands out as the highest quality compared to other places. You can notice the quality in every detail even the presentation. The service was 10/10. We sat at the bar, and it was really enjoyable chatting with the staff there. The atmosphere is a bit noisy, but that's because it's always busy. One thing to keep in mind the wait can be long. We enjoyed most of the rolls we ordered and I felt there was a good balance between the amount of fish to rice ratio. I also didn't feel the sauces were excessive which I really appreciated. Another successful trip to Kuma. This is becoming one of my favorite sushi spots to frequent. Their rolls are unique and have a twist to your normal sushi restaurant. Their fish is always so fresh and delicious. My favorite things to order are the Kuma, Larvae, and Volcano (baked). Their mussels are also super good. We came in on Sunday around 1pm. It was definitely busy but we were able to put our names on the list for 3 people. We were seated within about 15-20 minutes. Consistency is the reason this place is so good! Quality fish and products. They roll their large selection of both cooked and raw tight and use just the right amount of rice. If you are wanting the heat from peppers they have spicy rolls! Baked mussels always have that little char on them. With AYCE you get a choose of carpaccio as well. For the all you can eat, having the ability to get one speciality like the carpaccio is definitely generous as you do not see that many places. The speciality nigiri like the Donald Duck are very yummy with a good rice to fish ratio. There are some rolls that you can pick without rice. Overall, the rolls were not as interesting to me as getting their nigiri due to be heavier on the cooked roll side. I will go back sometime to give more rolls a try though. Updated - My only real issue is with the constant Bell rining every few seconds from the overhead PA system. I asked our server what this bell was and he said from people coming in and out. The bell is very loud and repetitive, interfering with our ability to converse. It was very distracting and frankly annoying. We also ordered appetizers 3 appetizers. While they were very good, they all arrived at the end of the meal. So I updated my review and docked them a star for the bell and and all appetizer's arrival at the end of our meal. Kuma did take the appetizers off our bill which was appreciated. This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Reno! Kuma has a good vibe as a casual but classy sushi restaurant. It is a real sushi restaurant with real sushi chefs who know how to properly prepare the sushi. The restaurant is actually small and located in a strip mall with plentiful free parking. There are no more than 30 tables and a sushi bar. Every time I go, it is bustling. The restaurant is always very clean and the tables are ready to serve. The food is well prepared and the service is fast. My favorite on the menu is the crab bake roll. To be fair, every sushi roll I have eaten there is delicious. The chicken teriyaki dinner was HUGE, good if you have a very large appetite, but the specialty ayce portions were laughably small, especially the softshell crab. It was as good as it looked; I mean, it was so, so good. Despite them being really busy, the service was excellent. Having visited Kuma three times in a month the hostess recognizing me was both embarrassing and a flex was one of the few times I've felt empowering. I had the pleasure to try Kuma early last year with my partner and daughter and had a great time but unfortunately our stomachs are quicker than my phone. Luckily the last time I was able to capture what I was able to. Sitting at the bar with exceptional service I went with my best friend and we were greeted and seated right away at dinner on a Friday. I always get their baked mussels despite Reno loving Tokyo Sushi's i LOVE Kuma's more with their hint of smoky flavor the taste like charcoal and very meaty. They offer an abundant of appetizers ranging from your potstickers, miso soup to lobster baked?? Like what?? The uniqueness the menu offered is what caught my attention when I ventured off to Lakeside wanting to try this spot. The roles range from raw, cooked and fried but also have a variety of ways they put them together and include unique ingredients from soft shell crab, lobster and actual crab. The set up is very open and clean with enough room to hear each other but also have TVs set up to watch the games currently playing for the season. The servers have always been attentive and will support and rotate in case your current server is behind. My dessert go-to is their affogato which I rarely see around town let alone in a sushi restaurant so a nice creamy, sipper at the end of my meal always hits the spot. Love this place. Sushi and prices are amazing. Problem is- so does everyone else. It's always packed. Now they do a good job with quick service, which I appreciate. I never do all you can eat, we just do ala carte. Service is always fast and food hot and fresh. I can only speak for the cooked rolls. But they're amazing. We love the basked scallop roll and baked salmon rolls. Portions are good. Prices are fair. It's just sooo crowded inside that's a bit of a headache and kind of hectic. When you enter Kuma Sushi, the restaurant looks quite nice, with nice seating, high ceilings and a polished finish. On this occasion, you could not miss the mis-placed sounds of AC/DC's Hell's Bells blaring over the sound system. Not exactly what I would expect from an "up scale" Sushi restaurant. The music continued with the thumping boosted bass of modern day club music. What ?!? Looking for more of a snack than a meal, we ordered a Dragon and Catepillar roll. We were trying to get the attention of our "waiter", we were unsure if he understood our order as he just turned around and walked away. Sushi rolls are defined by the quality of the rice and the freshness of the fish. Let's just say the rice was mushy and gummy. This is our go to spot after a long day of skiing. The ratio of fish to rice is perfect and the pieces aren't too big so you can have lots of variety. Our favorites are the seared saba, yellowtail, unagi and Donald nigiri. The spicy edamame is good but a bit too saucy. The seaweed salad and sashimi salad are always solid as well. The tempura is nice and fresh but a little too heavy on the batter. Gotta save room for some ice cream dessert (I always get the strawberry mochi ice cream). I hate leaving negative reviews, but unfortunately this experience deserves one. I've always considered Kuma one of the best sushi restaurants in Reno, which makes this visit even more disappointing. From the moment I walked in, the service felt off. The restaurant wasn't busy, but the host simply looked at me from across the room instead of greeting me or seating me. I had to tell them myself that I wanted to sit at the sushi bar. I ordered the All You Can Eat menu. My first appetizer order arrived incomplete, yet my order sheet was taken away as if everything had been served. I had to remind the staff that several items were still missing. Then it happened again with my second sushi order. After waiting a long time, none of the sushi I ordered ever arrived, but once again my order sheet had already been collected. I sat there waiting until I was basically full from waiting, and eventually just asked for the check because I didn't want to wait any longer. To make matters worse, the FIFA World Cup third-place match was on TV, and it honestly felt like some of the staff were more interested in watching the game than paying attention to their customers. The food is still very good, and that's the only reason I'm giving more than one star. Unfortunately, great food can't make up for poor service. This was easily the worst service I've experienced here, and sadly, it will probably be my last visit. read more
