Personally I have almost always had a great experience here. If I was to take a star away it would be for the occasional bad customer service from the people at the front desk and the servers, but there's a lot of factors that can go into that and usually I have a good experience. Sushi is 5 stars especially for the all you can eat lunch price. Muscles were rubbery though. I tried both muscle appetizers and both were that way. Flavor was good though. Service I would give a 2 star. The chocolate icecream looks like it was be prescooped into the cups then put back in the freezer after it had melted a little. In the picture, you can see it was melted at some point and then refrozen. Makes the ice cream taste gross. I got passed by 7 different times before a waiter told me to put the ticket in the holder for someone to come get it. The server was going to put it in the holder and walk away without it until I mentioned I'd already been passed by several times, then he took it with a huff. In 2018 I gave this place a 5 star so I wanted to try it again with my mother and my son. A little disappointed. I'm willing to give it another chance but not anytime soon. As I sit at the bar with salmon eggs popping in my mouth, I think: life is good, but not perfect, same for Tokyo Sushi. Most times I come alone an hour before closing and get a seat at the bar almost immediately even with groups on the waiting list. This visit, I was astonished to find 36 people on the waitlist with only an hour left so had to wait a bit. At that late point they hand out order sheets while you're waiting, which for diehard groups seated shortly before closing means placing a MEGA order as soon as you sit down, followed by a rushed scarfing-down session as the staff begins closing up shop. The menu is quite large with heavy overlap with the menus at most other AYCE places. Roll selection is good and popular, as I look to either side, I'm appreciative of most patrons filling up on rolls commonly made with fake Krab (same stuff in frozen fish sticks), deep-fried ingredients, and generous applications of mayo and eel or teriyaki sauce. These cost the restaurant far less than a steady stream of nigiri, effectively subsidizing the roughly $120 worth of assorted nigiri I'm about to consume for about a third of that price. To each their own. The rice was perfectly seasoned and properly cooked, the most important part of sushi, though on one previous visit it leaned a bit too sweet. The fish tasted good, I wouldn't call it 'fresh' as most sushi fish comes frozen (except the Salmon and shellfish) so 'well thawed and not old' might be better description. The fish-to-rice ratio is better than at most competing spots. Service is usually decent but attentiveness can vary and lag when busy if you aren't assertive and use the call button or flag someone down. Also double check your credit card bill that a higher tip that you designated wasn't charged which happened to me once. The combination of a packed dining room, skewing on the young midtown crowd side, and upbeat music, makes the place LOUD and festive, with sports on two large-screen TVs. The downside is that carrying on a conversation in a larger group can be challenging. The bar refrigerator sits high enough that you can't really watch the chefs work, and when combined with the noise and possibly a language barrier, forget about chatting with the sushi chef. Food-wise, it's easy to place Tokyo Sushi in Reno's top three AYCE options, though you'll pay a few dollars more than average at roughly $45 per person with tax and tip as of June 2026. However its extreme popularity fills the parking lot and creates wait times capable of testing almost anyone's patience. Waiting over an hour during peak dinner service is not uncommon, and the crowded waiting area may leave you standing outside or sitting in your car. Hungry couples and groups may want to consider less busy alternatives, especially on a 90+ degree summer day or when winter "rolls" around. read more

Upon being seated, we were told to fill out the all-you-can-eat order form as many times as we wanted, which sounded great. My meal didn't arrive for over 30 minutes, and when it finally did, it was cold. The chicken tasted like pressed meat and was extremely chewy--definitely not what you'd expect from a basic entrée. I wasn't planning to complain, but it became clear the issue wasn't just my order. The other four people in my group were barely being served at all. Meanwhile, tables that were seated after us were receiving multiple rounds of food while we continued waiting. We asked several servers for updates, and each time we were told they'd check on it--only for them to disappear for 10-15 minutes with no follow-up. After spending over two hours there, many of us left hungry and frustrated. It has been years since we had been to this place for sushi. It has been redone on the inside and attracts a different kind of clientele these days. When we walked in I was impressed. It was 4pm and almost every table in the house was taken up, and so was the bar. I saw the prices, and they are a little higher than most places in town, but we are willing to pay to try the place. We ordered a huge variety of items from jalapeño poppers to Donald ducks, to quail egg shooters to a variety of rolls. Everything was tasty and fresh. My kid liked one of the baked rolls so much he ordered 3 of them. I liked the hand rolls but found it a little strange that you couldn't order most rolls in a hand roll version they have a hand roll section with about 8 rolls. The place stayed busy till we left and had even started a waiting list. One thing we were excited for was they offered a salmon kama order for each AYCE sushi. We only ordered one and shared it, but it was delicious. We have only had a hamachi kama before so this was a treat. It's been a while since we ate at Tokyo Sushi; the last time we went there, they had just changed management and were still getting their bearings. The current version of the restaurant is more organized and incredibly busy, it's very difficult to find a space in the small parking lot and there's a constant flow of customers through the door. The restaurant was able to accommodate our 5-person party at a nearby booth and we liked the call-button feature at the table. The servers were quick to drop off our drink orders, condiments and our appetizers; once we got started ordering the AYCE sushi, the chefs continuously filled our orders. All the appetizers tasted great; I especially enjoyed the crispy batter on the fried calamari and enjoyed the crab balls. Their unagi and upside down shrimp were pretty smooth. The rest of our of party enjoyed the salmon skin handrolls and scallops ha drool respectively. The PROs: the food was great, everything was beautifully prepared and tasted wonderful. The CONs: the lack of parking, the restaurant's overhead sound system was too loud to carry a decent conversation with the person sitting across the table from you and the restaurant was overcrowded, our party was (politely) asked to leave if we weren't ordering anymore food and were informed the restaurant had a time-limited (it would have been great to know ahead of time), plus, our main server was perturbed when we made a couple of requests: an extra cup for our hot tea and to top off our drinks, he annoyedly informed us he had other tables. It had been a while since we had gone to Tokyo Sushi. A lot has changed. The staff for the most part looks new, the ambiance of the place is livelier though a little louder and more upbeat. Some folks might not be a fan. The sushi was still good, small, palatable bites and delicious flavors. I didn't get my usual fried rolls like Godzilla or King Kong, they're always so good--I just went with cooked and raw pieces this time around. Rolls like the Double Tiger, Caterpillar, Tokyo, Midtown, "That's how we roll" are some of my favorites, and if you never tried a hand roll--it's a must. Any flavor! I gave them four stars for the day, rounded up from three and a half based on service engagement. I always appreciate when a waiter can name the rolls we ordered when they drop them off. It helps us to remember the ones we like. The sushi is the star of the show. Introduce them right? I also wish an exception could be made to order à la carte for kids when the adults order all you can eat. That way food is never waisted and money is saved. Otherwise, you have to make sure the kids stomachs aren't bigger than their appetites and order small things for them, appetizers, hand rolls while sharing the rolls adults get. Tokyo Sushi is still a nice place to stop by every once in a while when you want a taste of a few good rolls of sushi. All you can eat, roughly $30 a person. Compared to sushi restaurants in Las Vegas, Reno's sushi scene still has some catching up to do. Down south, the fish tastes fresher, the menus are more extensive, and the variety (including high-end cuts and creative non-sushi options) sets a much higher bar. I truly hope Tokyo Sushi -- being one of the pillars of the Reno sushi scene -- finds a way to recapture its former quality and stand out once again. To say Tokyo Sushi is your typical parking lot sushi is a bit of a misnomer. It's pretty good sushi and they bring it out, quickly. Almost $30 for AYCE is a bit steep. I guess that's the way of the world. It's crowded. We only waited 30 minutes. Communication was tricky; partly because I'm old and can't hear very well. You can guess the rest. A big Sushi turnoff is stuffing with crab meat or rice. Happy to report that they do neither. My review comes from being a tourist visiting family. Reno has quite large number of ayce sushi places that are not solely Asian buffets. Tokyo Sushi has lunch and dinner options. Lunch was approx $30. So even though one could order indiv. items, it's almost not worthwhile compared to ayce option. Coming from CA, this is an incredible deal! At Tokyo Sushi, you can order everything you want in 1 go-- plates are brought out as they are made. Other places tend to go by rounds to slow down and pace eating. Also, it's noted that any leftovers can be charged per slice or item to prevent over-ordering; I think that's standard for any ayce to prevent too much waste. My sister is vegetarian and she tried to order more apps and felt that the variety was limited. The tempura veggies any any other deep fried items were not made with tempura batter and came out on the heavier, greasier end. But she really like the veggie tempura roll. She was surprised they offered full size rolls; if rolls were half sized, one could order more variety. I ordered a roll (but can't remember the name); basically all rolls start with CA roll fillings, but this one had a zesty lemon citrus flavor added. It was different for me, and my favorite. I am not sushi fish connoisseur, so I didn't really favor the 2 Nigiri options- the rice felt pretty heavy and dense and not separated fluffy grains. The handrolls that had little bay scallops also felt super dense. All servers share and can drop off items, so our original server was totally not friendly, but others were much kinder and welcoming. So service just totally depends, but not anything that really affects eating experience. The majority of sushi guys behind the bar are not Japanese (so not trained Japanese sushi chefs), so this is not the place if you're looking for 100 authentic sushi Japanese standards. If only I could give zero star, I would. We've been eating here for the past 2 years, and we love the food. Which make this recent experience more upsetting. On 02/26/2026, we complained about salmon nigiri because it had a dark yellow, egg-like look on some pieces that concerned us. We politely brought this to the attention of one of the waitress. Instead of handling the situation concern professionally, her response felt hostile and dismissive. She took my mom's chopsticks, removed the salmon in question, placed it on our cucumber salad plate, and threw the chopsticks at my mom's plate. We were shocked by the way the situation was handled. A manager then contacted someone identified to us as "Mr. Chao Zhang," who was described as the owner. During the call, we attempted to explain what happened, but the conversation felt abrupt and unproductive. I don't mind paying for our food, it's just $181, like what I told to the owner I can pay for everybody eating at the restaurant that night. Our concern is the way our food safety question and customer service issue were handled. I would rate this place 3.5 stars if I could. I ordered a large order to go and scheduled it about three hours prior. I arrived a few minutes earlier to pick it up. About 35 minutes later, I received my order. I was pretty irritated because I'm pretty sure they started making my order when I arrived. They were semi busy but, service was blah. Tokyo Sushi lost our family's business today. We've been loyal customers, but their rigid unwritten policy ruined our experience. After a medical procedure, I can't eat much, so I wanted to order a la carte sushi while my family got AYCE. The waitress insisted I could only order a la carte and wasn't allowed sushi, despite my explanation. No effort was made to accommodate us. My wife was so upset we left. This was never an issue before, but now they've lost a $140+ check. Sushi Pier welcomed us without hassle. Won't be returning to Tokyo Sushi. read more
