Some of those include Persian rugs, found where else, but Persia. And recently when I needed one of those acquisitions trimmed and cleaned, where else to go, but Baseer's in Larchmont. First of all, people come to me because of my deep knowledge of surplus equipment and the market value for key components needed to launch insurrections. And people go to Baseer's because of their knowledge of the finely woven market. But here's another even better reason to go. It's a family business. And the best businesses are a family business. Your first time being there you may see Baseer's wife. May even see their kids studying and talking. And then what you should also know that you won't learn in an ad or elsewhere is that Baseer goes the extra mile. When I called late on a Saturday after he had left the store and closed it, when I was in need of the carpet for that evening, Baseer heard it in my voice and went back, got my trimmed and cleaned carpet and brought it to my home. Wow. Now that's Customer Service at its's best. Not some 1-800 treatment. It's like, when I asked my friend, if the Chinese takeout restaurant down the block from his store was any good? He said, "I don't know. But the same family has been running it for more than 10 years, so it must be pretty good." And that's all you need to know about Baseer's Rugs. The same family run store. For Years. In Larchmont.

I took three Persian rugs to this store for cleaning. Two came out fine, but one was returned with…read moreripples (see picture). I left the rug on the floor for a few weeks hoping the ripples would settle, but they did not. I asked Baseer to take a look and fix the issue, but he denied that the rippling had anything to do with the washing--which is simply not true, as the rug was perfectly fine beforehand. He then charged me an additional $175 to "fix" the rug, but he was unable to do so. The rug still has ripples, and now it is also stretched out of shape (see pictures). When I confronted him about the poor quality of work, instead of taking responsibility, he repeatedly accused me of lying, raised his voice, and even said he never works with people of my background and nationality. This was despite the fact that I had already paid for his poor service and was only voicing a legitimate concern about customer service. To be fair, Baseer's prices are reasonable, but that is probably the only positive thing about his business. Unfortunately, the rug in question had deep sentimental value for us, and now it has been ruined. All he did was accuse me of lying while charging me for services he did not properly deliver. Absolutely terrible customer service. Stay away at all costs.

So when I realized that a few more recent rugs (bought in Turkey about 20 years ago) needed cleaning and some light repairs, of course I brought them to Nazmiyal. As was the case earlier, both rugs were cleaned up and repaired beautifully. The people here are friendly, respectful, and highly competent - and they know more about rugs than anyone else I've met anywhere. My apartment is not large and I don't have room for any more rugs - but when the rug I bought in India a few years ago needs cleaning (sometime in the 2040s is what I'm guessing), I'll bring it here. And if I ever move to a larger place, I'll be coming to Nazmiyal to maybe pick up a few more rugs. They've got a huge collection.

Their friendly, capable crew picked up and returned the hand-cleaned carpets and actually helped us get them in place with new pads, assisting with moving some heavy furniture. In one case they performed a miracle because that old rug had been in a basement. It was heavily soiled and it came back looking nice enough that we placed it in the primary bedroom. Kaoud's work was outstanding. Do not be surprised that it takes some time. Your rugs are literally hand washed and air dried, so in our case it took four weeks from pick up to reinstallation.
