Brian was awesome. He was very knowledgeable about the coffee, and super friendly. He helped us pick a coffee, and it was amazing! I normally drink coffee with half and half, but the cup that Brain brewed was perfect straight black - it would have felt wrong to add anything to the coffee he brewed up. We bought some sipping chocolate mix to take back home and he made sure to make a small sample so we'd know how to make it. Bonus points for the vinyl playing in the corner. read more

Here on the Big Island, some of the very best coffee is grown. We also have some talented roasters. Very few shops however take the time or even know how to perform the final step in order to bring the best of each roast into your cup. The "brewing" part is too often rushed or batch brewing is done to give you a quick cup sacrificing the beautiful intricacies that each roast might reveal. This is not just a coffee shop but an educational experience about each coffee so you can make a choice more aligned with your preferences. If you prefer a "cafe latte" or "caramel macchiato" this may not be your place. Only pour overs are served , they take a bit more time so be patient. You can't rush your way to coffee nirvana. read more

Asked us how we usually drink our coffee, and directed us to a fabulous roast with plenty of education regarding the process. We stayed for over an hour just enjoying watching Brian host his guests. I can confidently say that Koana is the best coffee shop that I have ever visited. Koana's coffee quality is superb. Brian (the founder) carefully curates his selection of coffees, offering a range of wonderful local coffees roasted by some of the island's best roasters - Brian's close friends. He also carefully brews them himself with his own blend of mineral water. Koana, however, goes far beyond coffee. Brian offers a selection of pastries, teas, and his incredible (and home-made!) hot chocolate. Despite Brian's vast knowledge of coffee and teas, he/his shop remains unpretentious. Above all, though, the shop is animated by Brian's infectious personality. His love of coffee is apparent in every cup of coffee he brews and every friendly conversation he has with his patrons. Meeting Brian was one of the highlights of our trip. My friends and I went to Koana to find some quick caffeine. We left over an hour later with large smiles, some tasty hot chocolate mix/coffee beans, and (of course) some post-caffeine jitters. read more

A true hidden gem. One of the best coffee shops on the island tucked a short drive from Volcanoes National Park (right off the main road). Honestly one of the best coffee shops we've ever been to (at least as serious about coffee as places like Stumptown, Intelligentsia, and Blue Bottle on the mainland). Enjoyed a fun and informative and delicious coffee and chocolate tasting at Koana today. The owner was wonderful to talk to and showed us different stages of brewing and explained the differences with dark and light roast coffee and how to get the best coffee with using the right temperature and brew styles. Brian is very knowledgeable and super passionate about his work. You can tell from the products and flavors he chooses for the shop. He is also very welcoming and the shop felt warm. Koana was one of our favorite places we visited during our whole trip. I would definitely take an extra day next time to explore and absorb the local culture on this side of the island than to spend a day doing coffee tours on the Kona side. Also, try out the mochi donuts next door if you can, they are competitive to some of the bigger names like MODO in my opinion. read more

I wish I booked more days in this area because of this spot. The coffee is great here and the experience is one of the best I had on this island. It's a gem and a place that I want to visit again. I must have my coffee everyday, spent a week on this island and this is the only business I've been to where I can feel a lot of creativity and character. It does not have the ocean view like other coffee shop/farm on the island but you must put this on your list if you drink coffee, tea, or hot chocolate. Do recommend spending more time in this area too, the Kona city side turns out to be pretty boring for my taste, overrated food and attractions. read more

WOW! We saw a coffee shop & just stopped in for a quick cup. We had no idea it would be an EXPERIENCE! I used to manage a winery, and this was the coffee equivalent of a wine tasting where you learn all about how region, climate, soil, and all the ways the beans are treated effect the flavor. I felt right at home! We'd never heard of Ka'u coffee until this trip, so it was a great way to compare Ka'u with Kona (Ka'u won). I was also fascinated with Brian's pour over cone & how he holds the brew before letting it drip depending on the read he gets from the visitor. He's a true master of his craft! The best thing in Mountain View! Tea: AMAZING. Coffee: RICH. You will have to wait for your drink but good things don't come quick anyway. Brian makes you feel like you're the most important customer in his shop. It's warm, welcoming, quirky, and charming all wrapped in one. The place smells incredible and you will find drinks here that you won't anywhere else. I live in Hilo but I will surely be making some special trips to Mt. View for this treat. Aloha, as you're driving up to Volcanoes National Park, you will pass Mountain View Village. When you see it, slow down and drive into the village off to your right. There you will find Koana Coffee. Do yourself a favor, walk inside and meet Brian. He is the proprietor of Koana Coffee. I went in to sample some of the many wonderful coffees from the local island growers. Brian was wonderful, he explained about the proper techniques for brewing coffee, growing coffee, roasting coffee and much more insightful Information. It was indeed a treat for the senses. The various Big Island Coffees I sampled were amazing. And Brian made it an interesting tasting adventure. A great little shop, with a great owner who takes pride in taking care of his clientele and providing something you don't find much of these days, a warm and welcoming aloha spirit.
