Kobe-Ya is awesome. Been coming here since I was in high school in the late 90's early 2000's. Been through many owners yet they've managed to keep a consistent level of quality and prices. Prices are very accesible and perfect for those on a budget. Some of their items can be a bit pricey. Food is usually fresh, unless you order an item that people usually don't order i.e eel, salmon, soft shell crab. Stay away from those because more than likely, they're not fresh. Their white rice noodles are some of the greatest noodles I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Their bento box special for $6.50 is always a winner. Good noodles and California rolls. I just picked up Chicken Katsu to go and it was horrible. The pieces were maybe a half inch wide and a quarter of an inch thick and many of them didn't even have chicken, they were just fried pieces of panko. HUGE fan! Went here almost everyday for lunch when I went to Alameda High School. The food is yummy. White noodles are hands down the best! I get the terriyaki bento box to-go and when I get home I open the box like a little kid on Christmas morning hoping I got the noodles. The parking is a little hard to come by unless you don't mind a little walk. I've seen people circle the block like 5 times waiting for someone to leave. If I'm lucky enough to get a spot out front, I have someone waiting for me to leave before I even have my keys out. Be careful when going around lunch time, not sure of the exact time but that is when the highschoolers go for their lunch as well and it can get a bit crowded in there. Food is great, seating is nice also. 2 tables bench seats with huge windows behind you. I highly recomend checking this place out. Prices are good too. I've had Kobe-Ya a few times and it was delicious. Tonight I went in to order the Teriyaki Chicken and a couple of other things and they got my order wrong twice! After 30 minutes of waiting they finally gave me my order, but the Teriyaki Chicken was different!. It wasn't sliced like it usually is. I don't like the inconsistency that took part in making this dish. On top of that, the sauce for the Katsu was missing!! For inexpensive sushi, this place can't be beat. There is no raw fish sushi here but don't worry, you will find enough to fill you up. Everyone I bring to Kobe-ya finds something they love; avocado rolls, inari, futomaki, California roll (with added tobiko)... When I worked in the area, I would buy lunch of a roll plus steamed vegetables or a salad for about $5. My only criticism: I believe the restaurant changed owners a few years ago and as much as I enjoy it now, it was twice as good then with the most perfectly executed sushi rice on earth! read more

I have been eating here for years. I was a regular until a few weeks ago. While I was waiting for my food at the counter, the lady that serves the food was preparing someone's chicken teriyaki. She tasted the rice with the serving spoon, and with the SAME serving spoon she served the chicken teriyaki and rice onto that person's plate. two star for the price. choices of sushi are very limited. we tried the lion king roll which is cali roll wrapped with salmon, baked then drizzled with teriyaki sauce. the roll is cut up in big chunk and the salmon tasted so dead. I'm not picky when it comes to fish, but when I can taste how dead the fish is, then it's really not fresh and the sauce is not the right consistency and lack of sweetness. When you stop her from hanging up and tell her your name, she'll hang up without thanking you or saying goodbye. They don't give you chop sticks with the food, so you have to ask for them. They don't give you napkins, thus you have to request them. This little place is very no-frills. Plastic spoons, paper cup for water. There are only a few places to sit and the inside is not much to look at. The service was surly, to say the least. I got a blank look when I ordered and not even a grunt when serving the food although I brightly said "thank you" and "looks good". The prices, on the other hand, are extraordinary. You can easily make yourself a lovely small lunch of a couple of sushi roles and soup for under $10. I ordered the double shrimp roll, the rock and roll roll and the sake roll. I have to say that the rock and roll was a little disappointing. Not much eel and what was there was overwhelmed by the crab & mayo also in the roll. The double shrimp was fantastic although don't bother with the "double" part. It is simply a shrimp tempura roll with four or five more shrimp draped over the top. The tempura was generous and crunchy, though! Sake roll was just about perfect. The rice was nice & tasted fresh, and they were generous with the avocado & salmon. The miso soup was surprisingly excellent. Lots of fresh seaweed and good flavor. I'll be coming back but I think I'll keep my orders simple. Stop by! read more

Terrible customer service. I was waiting at the counter and the lady was in the back - she made direct eye-contact with me twice and didn't even acknowledge me. She just kept going about her business, whatever it is she was doing. There was only one other group of customers finishing up their meal sitting in the restaurant, so it's not like she was preparing their food. Good place to go if you're craving some sushi. The prices are fair for what you get, but don't go in with high expectations. You will in fact have to wait quite a bit. But aside from the wait, it's a nice little shop to grab yourself something to eat. Dishonest pricing. Lousy customer service. Posted price on the menu board said unagi rolls were $4.25. She charged me $4.50 for each of my 4 unagi rolls. When I asked her why I got charged more than the posted price she replied that her boss said that unagi was expensive. I told her they needed to update the prices on their menu board and not try to sneak in a price increase at the register. It wasn't worth arguing with the stubborn rude lady. I am a long time customer of this restaurant and have always enjoyed their food and customer service. Until today. I called in my order as usual, when I arrived the order had not been prepared so I re-ordered. I thought I had enough money for the meal and the tip but I soon realized that the price had gone up and I was short by 76 cents.
