Small shop in China town. Cool sort of apothecary vibe with a lot of odd and old containers and various knick knacks scattered around. Pretty easy to miss. I attended and played shows for years across the street at the Chinatown Youth Center and never noticed the place. I went and checked it out after reading about it somewhere. As for the food there's not much to say. It's absolutely delicious. Ive tried several varieties each of the ice cream and the pastries and I've never been disappointed. I wish there was a government program that would declare restaurants heritage sites in order to help preserve them for future generations. Kogetsu-Do would be tops on my list if such a thing existed. This family owned business has been around since 1915 and has been in its current location since 1920. There was a period during World War 2 where the family had to halt operations because they were sent of to an internment camp in Arkansas. During that time the business was rented out to a Chinese merchant who was friends with the family. The recipes being used today are 100 year old family secrets. The owner still uses the same equipment her grandparents used. Kogetsu-Do oozes in history. The manju/Mochi is a bit gooier than I'm accustomed to. The manju envelop traditional fillings like red bean paste or white bean paste but I absolutely fell in love with the more modern macadamia nut toffee filled manju. It was a ridiculous sensory experience for your mouth. The chocolate with the gooey Mochi melted pleasantly over the tastebuds while the toffee and macadamia nuts added another dimension with their crunch. Go out of your way to patronize this historic business and try one of their new creations! Love that they stick with the traditional stuff but also try to stay relevant with new recipes. That macadamia nut toffee Mochi was one of the best desserts I've ever tasted. read more

5 star ratings are gems. This is a gem. This store has been in the same location and the same family for over 100 years. Wow! Oulie T.'s ROTD gives a nice historical summary. So, I'll cut to the chase. Amazing manju. 1/3 less the price and 3 x larger than it's Bay Area counterpart in San Jose Japan town. The homemade manju here is around $1.50 for a huge piece of fresh, soft, delicious, sweet manju. While the San Jose manju store makes small, petite and perfect pieces of manju (and also 3x the price each!); these are large and rustic. Maybe a bit like Fresno. What is Manjū? Manjū is a traditional Japanese sweet. The outside 'mochi' is made from rice flour. Traditional fillings include anko (red bean paste), made from boiled azuki beans and sugar. Some times the beans are whole or smooth (creamy). Kogetsu-DO has several types of Manju: 1.) Mochi outside (in several colors-- light pink, white, green), with either whole red bean or smooth, sweetened paste (anko) inside. They also have a sweetened white lima bean filling, which is rich and delicious-- almost like sweetened smooth chestnuts. The outside of the mochi is dusted with cornstarch, to prevent it from sticking. 2.) Sticky mochi on the outside, then dipped in kinako, a brown powder that is roasted, lightly sweetened soybean powder. It's a bit like a mild, roasted, toasty, super light green tea, but better. 3.) Sweet 'cake-like' mochi outside, filled with beans (smooth or creamy) inside. 4.) Seasonal fresh fruit flavors! This is something I've never had before; truly unique and special to Fresno. The fruit of the day was fresh blueberry. The kind owner said she uses locally grown, fresh blueberries. Amazing! Truly unique and special. I was in Fresno for a nursing conference at the nearby Doubletree Convention Center Hotel (about 5 minutes away-- would not recommend walking though). My first trip here I ordered several manju. They were yummy, so I went back the next day, before I left, to take some home. I called around 3:45 pm, 15 minutes before they close. They were out of the fresh blueberry, but the owner asked how many I wanted, and offered to make some fresh ones for me. They were ready for pick-up when I arrived. Talk about customer service! Couldn't resist the temptation to try her homemade mochi ice cream. If you like the store bought ones (even Trader Joe's sells them now), you will LOVE these! They are huge, fresh, tasty, cold and fun to eat! I tried the strawberry mochi ice cream. It has the same sticky, soft 'mochi' used in the manju. However, inside is delicious ice cream! The ones here are about 4 x the size of the store-bought ones. Seriously amazing for the price of $2.50. In San Jose, they sell Bubbie's mochi ice cream-- it's small and expensive! These are huge and much better! Tip: Wait until the ice cream and mochi soften a bit- it contrasts the textures and tastes (instead of eating frozen mochi). So good! The inside of the store is like visiting an old aunt's house (except the aunt I'm thinking of passed away about 20 years ago). The smells, decor-- all brought back memories of visiting her place. Interesting. Cash only. Bring a friend, as the neighborhood in downtown Fresno leaves a bit to be desired. Hard to find 'gems' like this are rare. Small, family owned business that truly are works of art and dedication. Don't miss this gem! The mochi ice cream is delicious! And it's the only place to get authentic mochi in Fresno. Never tried the other items but I've tried many different flavors of mochi and lots of mochi ice cream flavors. I'm not a fan of anko so I usually get the fruit filled mochi and they're always delicious. I love the chocolate flavored mochi, especially with strawberry or snickers ice cream ^_^ I had a mango ice cream mochi from here a few days ago that was really good, too. Try them all! The few drawbacks to this place are cash only and the hours. The hours listed are when she "might" be open. Frequently when I come by they are closed with no explanation. Although the neighborhood today is wholly marketed as Historic Chinatown, this 100+ year old, family-run shop is a remnant of the once bustling Nihonmachi (Japantown) outside Downtown Fresno, adjacent to the original Chinatown. Aside from their delicious confections, one can get the sense of a bygone era, and perhaps experience something they never have: Manju-ya are very, very, very, very, very, very few and far between. They are all at once nothing special, and everything special. If you happen to be on a roadtrip through Central Cal, take a quick hop off the 99 for a jaunt about the neighborhood and soak up the roots. It might look shabby, but boy their Mochi/Manju is so goooooood!! It's so soft and just really cute! It's also about $1-2 so it's really cheap too! My favorite is the peach!! Around the corner from Central Fish is the best mochi ever. It was the first place I tried fruit filled mochis that are not like any mochi you will find anywhere in San Francisco or San Jose. Their strawberry mochi is just a giant strawberry wrapped in pink and their ice cream mochis are practically the size of baseballs - they are also solid frozen so you have to let them thaw some before you it eat it - it's sooo worth it. Anyone who is a mochi lover has to make a pilgrimage to Fresno. Don't be deterred by the area - it's pretty obvious that it's an area that Fresno is not pouring any money to upgrading it or giving the respect due its historical significance. Best manju EVER. Growing up in the California, I've been fortunate to have access to several different manju shops in Japantowns in San Francisco, San Jose, and LA. I was SO impressed by the variety and quality of the manju at Kogetsu-Do. The standard Manju with bean is very good, but where they stand out is the fresh fruit manju. It's basically a sweet mochi filled with fresh fruit. I tried the peach and the blackberry, and was totally blown away. The mochi itself is incredibly soft and fresh, and the fruit filling inside pairs perfectly. My absolute favorite was the peach. The fruit filling is generous and is the perfect ratio to the mochi. A definitely must-try if you are a fan of mochi and are in the area. I will 100% be returning. read more

One of the few pre-war businesses that have kept their age-old recipes and are sharing, with unconditional love for the community, the fruits of their craft. This is truly one of Fresno's rare, small-scale and family-owned gems. The mochi is made the traditional way and, owing to the generosity and creativity of the owner, has its own, very unique variations such as mochi filled with fresh fruit, chocolate, and gourmet ice cream. The prices are almost unreasonably low for how much labor and care goes into these confections! If only they could ship nation-wide-- Kogetsu-do deserves that level of attention! The owners here are very nice and patient. The mochi are huge! They sell all different kinds. I've tried the red velvet ice cream, blueberry, and fresh strawberry ones. They were all delicious! My only gripe would be it's hard to eat mochi without getting flour from the outside all over your clothes, but that goes for mochi in general. A true Fresno gem! Kogestu-do is the real deal, having been in business for nearly 100 years! It's Chinatown location makes it a real "for locals only" type of place. Hard to find and unassuming, but when you enter, you know you're in a special place. There's a huge black & white photo on the right wall as you enter that depicts the owner's grandfather when he ran the store back in the 20s or 30s. It's fantastic -- and the store looks virtually unchanged. The manju is unlike any you'll ever have anywhere else. Most traditional Japanese manju is filled with bean paste which is fine -- if you like bean paste. Kogetsu-do has this traditional kind, too, but I LOVE the innovations that they've created using fresh, seasonal fruit to fill their manju. My personal favorite is the strawberry nutella, though the triple berry is also delightful. (Off-season, they use pie fillings which are ok, but nothing beats fresh seasonal produce.) In addition to the manju, you can also get their homemade mochi ice cream, which is unlike any other mochi ice creams you've had before in that it's like 10x bigger than normal -- and the same price! In LA, you pay $2 for a piece that you have to pop in your mouth and eat in 1-2 bites before it melts. Here, you pay $2 and you get a softball sized mochi that is perfect in that it slowly melts as you eat it. Lastly, I have to talk about their hawaiian style shave ice, which, if you don't know, means a scoop of ice cream at the bottom and topped with any of their HOMEMADE syrups and condensed milk. SO GOOD!!! The homemade syrups is what really sets their shave ice apart. Also, on our last visit, the owner packed so much ice cream in our cup that it must have weighed at least 2 lbs. I love this place and take all of my visiting friends here. If you go, make sure you get there early, as they often run out of their popular manju flavors and once it's gone, it's gone for the day, as she makes it fresh every day. Or, you can always call ahead with your order and they will hold it for you to pick up.
