Years ago, my wife surprised me with a haircut and color from Kahala back when he was at another hair salon. When I asked him what color dye he was going to use, Kahala, in all seriousness said, "let's go for pink." Once I figured out he was joking, and after the results of the cut and color, I was hooked. I have happily gone to Kahala every 3 weeks for at least eight years. He still cracks me up and is the best stylist I have ever had! Curly heads beware! I had my hair done (cut/color) about a year ago by Mary. I ended up having to go back in for two more follow-up sessions for her to get my color and cut right. I still left the salon with a horrible style and color. Truly the WORST cut, color and style I've ever had. I've been to salons all over the country. First off, in efforts to be minimalist and chic, the lighting is f'ing terrible. The service was equally so. After three appointments (major inconvenience!) i had uneven layers, shoe polish dark color (disgusting) and crusty curls. Like 1992 gel lock curls...?! Not only that but she left me in the sink for nearly 20 minutes knowing I had neck problems. I had to ask for a towel! Oh and the cherry on top of my miserable experience: she bleached my sweater! Nathan Kollar is the stylist you've been waiting to find! I followed him to Koipod from Propaganda recently, but I'd follow him anywhere! He's been cutting and coloring my hair for several years and I've gone from long hair to pixie, from platinum to blue and lavender to brunette, then back to platinum. I asked Nathan to maintain the short cut he gave me a year ago because I absolutely love it. Best cut I've ever had and I guess others notice, too because I've never received more compliments on my hair than when Nathan was behind the chair. He listens intently, ask questions to ensure I am getting the cut/color I want out of our session and is honest when I ask his opinion. I appreciate this because although I sometimes have something specific in mind, Nathan has a keen sense of face shapes and what may/may not work well for me. He's cool and down to earth. I actually made an international phone when I was vacationing overseas to book a haircut with him the day I got back. . . .I won't let ANYONE other than Carl touch my hair, not even for a trim. I'm super picky because I have a good amount of hair, but its fine and so one slight error in the cut and my hair is done for. . . Mary has been doing my hair color and cuts for about 12 years. I have followed her through three different salons because she is the best! She's an artist and has an intuitive sense about hair. The first time I ever saw her she was the only stylist who EVER paid attention to my looks, complexion, etc., and suggested my color accordingly, where all other stylists simply waited for me to tell them what I wanted. She continues in the same vein to this day, deciding with me based on her best judgment, sometimes talking me out of things that probably won't look right. I trust her completely. And she's super smart and able to hold deep conversations on everything from pop culture to serious world and political issues. I took my daughter to Giselle at Koipod to try and remedy a horrible highlight job she'd gotten at another salon (that we paid a small fortune for). Giselle is amazing. Not only did she correct the mess with an awesome new weave of multiple colors (primarily low-lights) and literally save my daughter's very long hair, she then cut and trimmed it to create a beautiful style without losing a lot of length. She offered some product options and suggestions but didn't push it. I would highly recommend Giselle for cuts and color work. read more

It's hard to find a stylist that really listens to your vision and then helps you make it next level, but she does that for sure. I always walk out feeling super cute. I just moved into the neighborhood and thought I'd give a new salon the opportunity to impress me and earn my business. Koipod FAILED. My awful experience began with my my attempt to book an appt. I made several calls throughout the day before someone finally answered; she was incredibly rude with her sighs, and seemed inconvenienced by my requests to match me with an appropriate stylist. Upon arrival the day of my appt, the receptionist greeted me in the same negative tone and informed me that my stylist had not yet arrived. I proceeded to wait for 15 minutes after my appt time, before I was finally sitting in her chair. She completely ignored my very detailed description of the cut and style I wanted to MAINTAIN. I simply wanted a trim, but she hacked my waste-length hair to just below my shoulder blades; plus she used entirely too many and too much product(s). The check out process was similar to the greeting: rude and unpleasant. Overall, it was a major disappointment, and I will be sure none of my friends endure this ridiculously poor treatment. read more

I hate to give anyone a bad review, but I had the worst hair experience ever here with Emma. I have long blonde hair and asked for partial blonde highlights with 3 small subtle pink/rose gold streaks. I brought in a picture ( a la January Jones) and talked it over. First go around, she did the streaks and it came out a weird pink orange color, so she mixed new color and re-did it. What I ended up with was 2 color block stripes of orangey pink on either side of my head. She insisted that it would lighten up after washing. After a week or so, I called and said I was unhappy and I'd like it to be fixed. I showed up for my 5 pm appointment, only to have her arrive to the salon 40 minutes late and condescendingly told me she liked it, and it was what I asked for. What I should have done was walked out and gotten it fixed elsewhere, but instead I scheduled another time where she could fix it. My next appointment she was 30 minutes late (again!) and I ended up with dark blonde pink. She walked me to the front and said there would still be traces of pink, asked the girl at the desk to back her up, and when I told her I was still unhappy with the color she said, "Well, next time you'll know not to play with color like that." (I might add she has pink hair.) I've never in my life had such an unprofessional and upsetting hair experience. I'm sure there are other good stylists there, but I won't be going back. read more

Had my first experience at Koipod following Mary over from Bliss. I just can't let her go. Her attention to detail is impeccable. She is very in tune with what I want & provides advice for how to further care for my hair. I tend to fry my hair over & over before I realize I need outside help, and she is always there to replenish me! I hadn't cut my super long hair in well over a year and when I did get it cut last it was a nightmare. So recently I decided to look around for a place to get my hair cut. I was on groupon and I saw a great deal for KOIPod and the reviews on here looked pretty good. Last Friday, 6/20/14, I went to get my hair done by Tony. She's very friendly and talked me through the whole thing. I told her some of my ideas and she listen as well as suggest something better for my hair time. I have long (to my lower back) hair that has an old ombre in it and my hair is naturally curly/wavy and veryyyy thick. She cut the layers so my hair would curl better. I also wanted face framing/fringe around my face and I originally wanted the fringe to start at my cheek bones and then taper down. She pointed out that I should have the fringe start just below my jawline unless I wanted to straighten my hair everyday because the shorter pieces of fringe would have a much more severe curl and would look strange. So glad I listened! Also I said I wanted 3-4 inches off and instead of just chopping off hair she showed me how much 3-4 inches meant to her an asked if that is what I meant. It was. It's very reassuring so know that your hairstylist is on the same page as you and cheeks before they chop. Will be going back! read more

Have been looking for a good hairdresser since I moved to Portland (several years) and finally I found Daniela - she is great. Highly recommended. For me, the difference of a great hairdresser is this: even long after my hair's been cut, as it grows, my haircut just evolves into a slightly different style but still very proportionate and nice looking. Average hairdresser will cut it so that in 2 months haircut is all disproportionate and needs a cut again. So I only cut my hair once in 4-5 months. read more
