I was excited to try this place, shortly after moving to the area. It was quite disappointing. I can overlook: 1) Hostess pointing to "booth over there" to sit. I asked her which booth, since there were other booths open in the general direction in which she pointed. 2) Dated decor and not the cleanest bathroom. 3) Instrumental piano music played, reminiscent of what is played in funeral homes, haha! What is difficult to overlook and why I just can't eat here ever again: 1) I ordered a vegetable roll. It had raw tuna in it. I didn't realized a vegetable roll in the same menu section as other vegetable-based rolls would have tuna! I picked it out of my roll. It's kind of inconvenient, especially if you are a vegetarian or vegan, you know? 2) The rice in the vegetable roll I ordered tasted foul. I'm not sure if something was off that day or they used a different type of vinegar than the multitude of places I've eaten sushi at, but it didn't taste balanced or pleasant at all. 3) A very small serving of seaweed salad. It's not very generous at all. 4) No complimentary miso soup. If you are not going to have this, at least have complimentary tea of some kind. 5) My friend received the wrong menu item. 6) The price for value of food. I've eaten at better quality places for 10-20% less money, including ones in adjacent cities to Northville. I have had grocery store vegetable sushi that has tasted better as well, which is saying a lot, since I'm a foodie. I don't recommend this place...at all. read more

The food and service were both good but heaven forbid you substitute a roll in the bento box. $2 dollars difference worth of rolls they said no originally and then said yes and charged $8 for them. If you want great food, service and a much fairer establishment do Sushi Zen in Brighton or if you want the best noodles or best sushi try either Aijshin or Sharaku in Novi you won't be sorry. read more

Mediocre sushi with higher pricing. We got 5 total rolls. 2 of the 5 were good. I'm a regular sushi eater and have tried it all. 3 of the rolls were so simple and bland tasting. Hands down, best sushi I've ever had. I have to stay away from a lot, because of an avocado allergy - a lot of places I've been to are kind of snobby about this. The staff here were wonderful and didn't even think twice when I asked for a roll without the avocado. I had the Spider roll and the French Kiss roll, both were purely outstanding. This is my preferred sushi restaurant in the area. The servers are always pleasant and helpful. They make a wide range of sushi rolls and all the ones I have tasted were delicious. My favorite being the spicy shrimp California. I also love their yakitori! Prices are reasonable and you can usually Google a digital coupon to save a little money. Sushi and me have enjoyed each other for many years since leaving Japan. Koji, is my new favorite sushi restaurant. I only have a few in this part of Michigan. If a cozy little town of brick and glass shops and lovely fall colors is desired, Old Downtown Northville, Michigan is sure to please you, and your lady too. Tucked in a very quiet place, behind a corner of Main St and Center Street, you will find this little birds nest. Parking is free and plentiful. You will avoid parking hassles here. There is a vestibule so the winter winds can't touch you. The staff greets you with a warm smile and an open hand to the seating areas. There is a beautiful view of the fall colors through the many windows. The furnishings are beautiful, and about as comfy as can be. Tables have cast iron pedestals, there is teak colored wood everywhere and lots of Japanese art and textiles. The prices are very reasonable for the delicate pieces of fresh seafood and greens you receive. Koji makes the Nigri with bright red flying fish roe. Koji serves "the good stuff". My Nabiyaki Udon and Shrimp Tempura was a delightful, flavor filled experience. Koji's technique to diffuse the flavors into the broth is magical. The manager is a kindly woman who keeps everything proper. Koji has been in business for ten years with many adoring customers. If you love real Japanese food that is lovingly prepared and served in a beautiful, peaceful place, Koji is for you. Koji has earned my rarely awarded, A+. read more

I can't attest to Julie's complaints except perhaps the sushi rice's sauce needs a bit more of the sticky icky or actually whatever gives it the attributes to hold together because a couple pieces that I picked up required some decently fast chop stick skills. However, the consistancy of the rice seemed fine. Upon arrival, the place did encompass a scent of a small restaurant serving fish related cuisine, but I guess that's what it is. The raw fish was fresh and we ordered the rainbow roll to be sure. Not to mention, the prices are nice. Approximately three bucks less for each of my favorite speciality rolls, Dragon included. I'll save the most endearing characteristic for the end: Koji epitomizes service with a smile. The Wife and I have sampled many Sushi places in the Metro Detroit area and let me tell you how fortunate we are to have this GEM so close to home! Let me start by saying the product, ALWAYS fresh, succulent and prepared with soul. We frequent there quite often and have been since it first opened. The waitstaff and Chef always greets us with big smiles and a genuine courtesy that can be hard to find in other places. The Salsa Roll is our absolute favorite (be warned it can be uber spicy;-) Sashimi Yellow Tail is my favorite ending note even their specialty rolls have filled my belly with joy and fullness to the brim. All for a reasonable price given the quality of the product. Oh, and the rice is always spot on. All in all, some dang good digs. read more

Typically, my rating for Koji would be 4 or 5 stars, but my experience yesterday left me a little flat. Slow to greet, close to 20 minutes to deliver sushi. Quality was off on the rainbow roll, fish was not really the sushi grade and the pieces of fish were small and broken. The unagi was really fatty and the dragon roll was poorly put together and we left with no good ROI, as we typically leave feeling good with our $50-75 investment....not yesterday.
