I have been to Koji many times, and they never disappoint me! They have really good deals for lunch, from bento boxes to sushi combos, and the prices are very reasonable! Yesterday I came in during my lunch break and ordered a salmon teriyaki bento box for the first time. It came with a miso soup, ginger salad, assorted tempura, 4pc california roll, a bowl of rice, and of course, salmon teriyaki. My stomach was full and very happy.. and it cost me only 9 dollars!! You can't beat that! I know other sushi restaurants have their bento boxes around like 13-14 dollars or so. The service here is great also. Your tea cup and water glass are constantly refilled. I was actually in a rather crappy mood because of what happened at work, and the young waitress working there yesterday sensed something was up and helped cheer me up. She was super friendly and nice. I definitely recommend this place! Oh, and make sure to try their Northville Fire Roll! You will be amazed. read more

Koji is located on the backside of the main drag in Northville. Street parking can be difficult depending on the day but we found parking right away. We wanted to stop by Browndog Creamery and decided that trying a new place in Northville was a good idea. We loved Koji! We tried the AAC roll, Green Dragon roll, Hawaiian roll, Volcano roll, and the Yam Yam roll. The AAC was fresh and tasty- it's not a complicated roll but it's one of our favorites. The Green Dragon roll was a solid choice but not a favorite. It didn't have a standout flavor. The Hawaiian roll was AMAZING! It's wrapped in cucumber instead of rice and nori, and it has pineapple in it so overall the flavor has a great sweet savory balance. The Volcano roll was delicious, we really like the spicy crab on top of the sushi that gave it a tiny kick. The Yam Yam roll had a honey wasabi sauce that was very unique and we loved the flavors. On a whim I tried the Hana Awaka sake, which was pricey ($10.95), but good. Our service was very good- greeted and sat right away (we just missed the rush coming in after us), attentive but not annoying and there was a team effort among everyone to make sure all the tables were taken care of. The place is smaller but not overcrowded with tables, which I liked. Our only disappointment was we forgot to order miso soup and salad! Completely our fault though. I only come to Koji if all the other sushi restaurants near me are closed. The sushi tastes okay but the pieces are so small and the rolls are extremely overpriced. I always leave this place still feeling hungry. There's nothing special to this place and honestly you're better off going somewhere else for more unique rolls and better quality. My Northville spot! It's hidden in a tiny little plaza on Northville downtown, but the food is top notch. Their rolls are loaded and very fresh and the portion sizes for their other items are generous. Service is quick and the management keeps the place running efficiently. I sound like I'm writing an ad for Northville, but my all-time favorite sushi roll is the Northville roll, which they flambé in front of you, resulting in a deliciously creamy, smoky flavor. O have yet to try some of their other entrees but I'll be back again very soon! read more

I have grown up eating sushi regularly. I've always been one to try every new place and stay on top of trends but still staying true to my favorites in the end. In 2018 when I moved to Northville I found Koji, it seemed small and underrated, what I like to call "a hidden gem" because that's exactly what it turned out to be! I have not enjoyed sushi anywhere since! This is by far the best sushi I have ever had and that says a lot because I have had a lot! Not a planned visit, we just happened to be in Northville and we were hungry. I decided on Koji because there was ample parking, the size of the restaurant was decent compared to others around it, the place was not empty, and, well, there wasn't much choice. The larger real estate is an indication that the business does fairly well and the fact that it was almost full at dinner time confirmed it. Additional parking can be found in the back of the restaurant where there is a second entrance, but you will need to climb stairs. If the back lot is full, there is also a parking structure next to it. One of the things I noticed immediately upon interacting with server that seated us is that Koji is Korean, not Japanese. They're quite similar in cultures, but hearing the wait staff speak to the Sushi Chef confirmed it. Knowing this, my menu selections were immediately altered to include a tasty Korean dish rather than a Japanese one. On the menu for tonight would be: Chirashi, Bulgogi, Soft Shell Crab, and a Kids meal. Soft Shell Crab. Typically battered and accompanied by a soy-vinegar sauce for dipping, the dish sounds simple, but is rarely executed well. IMO, a good soft shell crab has a very light coating of tempura batter, and the crab shell should be a little crispy. The sauce should carry flavours of rice vinegar, soy, sesame, onions, and garlic (a slight sweetness is also acceptable). When the dish came, I was disappointed upon it's presentation: the crab was panko breaded! While panko is used in some Japanese dishes like Tonkatsu, I've never had it with Soft Shell Crab. The dish was garnished with julienne radish, cabbage and carrots; sliced cucumber, and orange slices. Another strange combination which I did not know how to consume. I sampled everything on it's own, then various combinations of them, including squeezing the orange juice onto the crab and julienne slaw. The results were not good. While the citrus may have helped cut the grease of the panko, it also gave it a sweetness, a yin contrast to the yang of the soy-vinegar dipping sauce. The crab shell was soft which made it difficult to chew through (not enough heat when cooking or panko batter too thick, or both), and the meat of the crab was mushy (a sign that it's not fresh). 1,5 stars. Miso Soup. Miso flavour is derived from fermenting soy beans with salt. The broth should be clear and carry different flavours based on the ingredients complementing the soup. Typically it's salty; some places will use mushrooms to add a earthy flavour to it, and the best miso's will have a savoury flavour, adding complexity as well as a brothy or meatiness to the vegetarian dish. Unfortunately the Miso I received was quite lacking in miso flavour. Grant it, it was salty, but that was about it. 2 stars. Chirashi. Slices of raw fish (sashimi) atop a bed of steamed rice. The key to this dish would be the sashimi selection. At Koji it consisted of: Saba (Mackeral), Maguro (Red Tuna), Sake (Salmon), Tai (Sea Bream), Tamago (Egg). It also came with White Tuna (aka butterfish); Crab (processed fish), and Shrimp (not ebi which is freshwater sweet shrimp) which are not true sushi/sashimi items, rather substitutes for cheaper fare. I would easily trade all 6 pcs of the "non authentic" Butterfish, Crab, and Shrimp for 2 pieces each of Tako (Octopus) and Ika (squid), but you don't get that choice. The sashimi was inconsistent in size, and they were a tad on the small side lengthwise. The portion size of the Chirashi overall was good for a hungry person, and even though it was packed with sashimi, it was over-priced. 4 stars. Bulgogi. Is thinly sliced beef marinated in bulgogi sauce; a combination of soy, garlic, green onion, sesame, and sugar. The flavour should be slightly salty with a sweet finish. At Koji, this dish was served over a bed of cabbage, a really large bed of shredded cabbage! My usual place serves it on a bed of onions and cabbage on a hot iron plate). The beef to vegetable ratio was definitely off here. The Beef itself was shredded rather than sliced, and while that may have contributed to it's tenderness, it's negative impacts on presentation more than offset it. The flavour wasn't bad, the and the dish hit most of the right elements. 2 stars. Kids Meal. This came in a Bento Box which the kids enjoyed very much from a presentation perspective. It contained Chicken Katsu (breaded chicken cutlet), a California roll, fries. and steamed rice. The Chicken Katsu was decent and was topped with sweet soy (for the kids no doubt). The California roll was also on par. This is one of the few items fairly priced. 3 stars. Out of space! No review on rice. Sorry! Overall, the food we tried was just OK, but it was very pricey for what you get. The servers were very nice, and the service is typical of Asian restaurants: aside from refilling your drinks, they don't check on you; instead, you need to flag them down if you want something. 2,5 stars rounded up to 3. read more

It is one of the best Japanese restaurant that I have ever been to in the US in terms of taste and sushi variety! But it is the best price I have seen, 11 or so for a roll! I found this place when I went to the cider mill nearby. The sushi is really fresh and delicious. It is opened by Japanese people. Definitely strongly recommend!!! read more

Ordered dinner for my wife and I. I ordered the Sashimi deluxe and my wife ordered 2 rolls. I was surprised that the price was over $60 but figured it would be a lot of food and we'd be able to eat the leftovers the next day. That turned out to be a very poor assumption on my part. The sushi quality was decent but the 16 pieces of sashimi were tiny. There was hardly anything to eat and I was still hungry after finishing. My wife's roles were $15 each and they were small and underwhelming as well. We will not be going back any time soon. read more

After a much anticipation, I finally tried Koji tonight. Overall, I was very impressed. Now that I know I have a very acceptable sushi joint within walking distance of my house, I can definitely increase my sushi intake... this makes me happy. The service was great (but there were only 2 tables with customers sitting at them), the food was fresh and very satisfying, the prices were moderate, and I loved the picture menu that explained the rolls. The one thing that threw me off was that the overall sushi menu wasn't as extensive as other places that I have been. Koji gets a thumbs up from me and will definitely make my wallet happily a little lighter! read more

We had dinner here Friday night and it was actually really busy! There were only two servers for about 15+ tables so we did have to wait about 10-15 minutes to get our drink and food order in. But everyone that worked there was very friendly. I think this place was ok. It wasn't anything spectacular. It is helpful that they have a picture menu of the different sushi rolls and what ingredients are inside of them but all the roll combos I've seen before but with a different name. Great prices, speedy service, and a pleasant waitress are getting top points from me. I'm very pleased to have a great sushi place right in downtown Northville as I would prefer to spend my dollars on local businesses. My husband and I have been dining at Koji weekly since they opened. Booths are on the small side, but the seating is comfortable, the atmosphere is pleasant and inviting, and the sushi is super fresh. I just wish we would see this place with more customers! Haven't had any sushi here yet, but the donburi here is great! We came in on a snowy, cold winter day and some hot tea and miso soup was just what the doctor ordered. Going from there I had a tough time deciding between sushi, donburi or something tempura'd in a bento. Picking lunch is never a straight forward thing for me. Eventually my husband picked for me (ha) and I ended up with unagi don. Props to him for picking something I completely missed on the menu, and for him knowing my deep love of unagi/eel. The eel was broiled, served with skin and that ever glorious sticky sweet eel sauce. Served over warm rice and pickled veggies, this bowl made me very happy. My husband chose the beef teriyaki don for himself and enjoyed his meal. He did note that the sauce was overly sweet for his taste, but after stirring the meat around in the rice it got a little better. The ambiance of this little place is cute, by the way. The bar has a small shingled roof over it and soft music plays in the background. read more

I heart Koji :) I have been waging a constant battle not to drive to East Lansing to get sushi every time I want some, because I am so addicted to SanSu. I have finally found a place that has great sushi I want to eat again in the Metro area and is conveniently close to work and a bestie's house...YAY! In the 6+ years we've been coming to Koji for sushi, we have... -NEVER had a bad experience -NEVER gotten sick -always were greeted, and well attended -carryout orders were always correct -food has ALWAYS been outstanding, each, and every time. Saw the reviews and wanted to try out the place with my cousin. I should've kept a mental note that most reviewers were non-Asian. First off, the restaurant is Korean-owned so it's different from One World Market or Ajishin. Anyways, we were desperately craving sushi, so we decided to go big. We ordered the Volcano Roll, Trio Roll, Fantastic Roll, a Spicy Tuna Roll, and a Tekka don. Instead of boring you with the detailed description of flavor for all of them, I'll give an overall review. The fish quality tasted average but it was not bad. It was good American sushi that hit the spot for a fair price and nothing seemed at all shady regarding the freshness of the fish. Service was good. The waitress was very kind and polite and always quick with our requests. Overall, the place was "A-OK". Honestly, in a 20 minute radius, I feel as though there are better options for the same price. The food will satisfy but there's no amazing factor that makes you absolutely want to come back. read more

I've been to Koji many times now when I'm desperate for some sushi. The sushi pieces are so small, I am not even full after eating 2 normal rolls when that is more than enough at most sushi restaurant I go to. I would visit again, delicious sushi. The shrimp tempura roll (shrimp, crab, avo, cuc) was the best thing I tried, suuuuper addicting. The way it was prepared ended up giving it that indescribable balance of flavors and texture that you should get when you eat a piece of sushi, where everything kind of melds together into its own new product. The deluxe bento box ($20 for dinner including soup, ginger salad, 2 gyoza (the only disappointing thing...tastes baked instead of fried/sautéed because it's so dry), 2 shrimp dumplings, tempura shrimp & veggies, a Cali roll, & teriyaki of your liking. The restaurant was a little more expensive than we usually spend on sushi, so pricing could be better, but it wasn't terrible. read more

Very good sushi in Northville. We stopped in here early on a Wednesday afternoon. Place was empty at the time. Service was prompt and the two rolls we ordered were excellent. Would give it 5 stars, but pricing seemed a bit high, so 4 stars. Two rolls and two Sapora beers totaled over $40. Seems a bit steep. I came here for a weekday lunch with my coworkers. We were the only Asians in the restaurant. I can't comment on the sushi but it seemed like the typical offerings you would see in an Americanized Japanese restaurant. I ordered a chicken teriyaki don and I give it a solid "meh" rating. There isn't too much you can mess up with this dish, but the sauce was a little too sweet and it was served on top of vegetables on top of rice, which just seemed strange. This place looks to be Korean owned based on the Korean items on the menu, like kalbi and hae du bop. If you're looking for huge special rolls like dragon rolls and volcano rolls, then you would probably like this place. If you're looking for some good Japanese food, be prepared for an average experience. read more

This is my most favorite sushi restaurant! E-V-E-R-Y-THING I have tried here is amazing. You have to get the Mountain Roll there's is nothing like it I swear to you. The Sunday Morning, Caterpillar, Green Dragon, and Hawaiian rolls are also delicious. The sushi rolls are not too expensive. The inside of Koji is very nicely decorated and clean. I love the picture of all types of sushi next to the entry way. The chefs and staff greet you when you walk in and thank you when you leave. Everyone who works here is very friendly and the wait staff is very quick with service and drink refills. I discovered this gem when I moved to Northville and now make the drive from Detroit (20 mins) for dinner here on occasion. Or order take out on my way home from work. The sushi was pretty good, the service was "meh". I was surprised there were no Asian customers, like there are at Sanpei, Fumi or Hanzo. Also, Koji doesn't come up when I do a search on here for Japanese. I even tried a search for Korean b/c the owners are Korean, but that didn't come up either. Weird. Anyway, I'd go back. Oh Koji. you know, for the convenience and quickness of this place I'm giving it 4 stars. All the Northvillers are obsessed and it's always packed. I like it for the veggie rolls, and the ginger salad/ miso soup is delicious. You can get fresher sushi and more options over at Shiro, which is about 10 min away.. but for a quick carry out order, or for lunch.. it serves its purpose. A while ago they had a really rude woman working there.. but now she left and opened her own business by Schoolcraft.. tried it, it's gross. One of the problems I have with Koji is that they share their tips.. one woman that has been there forever is so nice, she loves us and always makes sure we are taken care of.. well the new girl that's there says nothing and dreads coming back to check on us. I love tipping 20% or over for really great attentiveness but I can't shed out all that money if the younger girl continues to be rude while bringing our food and giving us our bill. Anyway, Koji will remain on my carryout list. You should try it. read more
