Everything here is made fresh, To-Order, with vegan and vegetarian-friendly menu options. My personal favorite order is the bowl filled with tofu, spicy garlic sauce, and coconut rice. Each of their bowl entrees also comes with shredded cabbage for a fresh crunch. If you have a sweet tooth, I highly suggest trying the Funnel Cake Remix. This is a square funnel cake topped with your choice of powder sugar, chocolate, vanilla, berries, taro, honeydew, matcha, or coconut sugar. It is divine! Was in the VCU area, so why not venture back to the old Kokonut Grill I used to eat at while on campus. Some things have changed, and it's just become an average food spot now. The Food: I went with the "Box" option for my visit. 1 protein, 1 sauce and 3 sides. I went with the Spicy Garlic Chicken, White Rice, Spicy Fries and Sesame Noodles (Chilled). The chicken wasn't that flavorful or tender when I was eating it. The spicy garlic flavor wasn't fully there, so it was almost plain. The fries had some spice seasoning topped on it, which was good, but nothing noteworthy. The chilled sesame noodles were good though, nice subtle sesame flavor that was chilled hit nicely. Overall, a just an average cooked meal. I also remember them serving mac salad, that was a fan favorite amongst myself and a few friends, kind of sad its gone. The Service: Service was good! Staff here are friendly and welcoming. And, my order came out in a timely manner. The Atmosphere: Not a lot of seating inside. It's mostly a takeout kind of food spot. But still has the nice decor, paired with the nice college/RVA feel. Overall, a 3/5. Just an average food spot now. As much as I love the concept of Kokonut Grill the food let me down :( I was expecting bold flavors but everything fell flat! I had the Koko Box with spicy garlic chicken, coconut rice, and the macaroni salad. The sauce on the chicken was watery and not spicy, and barely had any garlic flavor. The coconut rice .. It was ok I guess to eat with everything else but by itself...blah. The macaroni salad was what I was most excited for but it wasn't creamy, and it lacked salt and any other flavor. The teriyaki sauce on the side was even watered down!! I will say the prices are good for the portions. I saw the great reviews while driving through Richmond and thought this would be a good way to try local grub. Unfortunately, it was a bit lackluster for me despite ordering with the spicy garlic sauce. It felt muted in a sense and the flavors didn't quite gel as well as I would like. Japanese mayo uses apple or rice vinegar rather than distilled vinegar. It also uses egg yolks rather than whole eggs which makes it awesome. Needless to say I was Geeked out of my skull to try this place. In fact, I talked them out of Goatacado just so I get could my "Hawaiian" fix. We got there right at 11:35am and put in our order. I've walked by here so many times I'm super glad I finally decided to give this place a try! I ordered the box with spicy garlic seasoned grilled chicken, two coconut rices and one pasta. The wait time as about 15-20 minutes despite it not being very busy (however I know they make everything upon ordering so I gotta appreciate the freshly made food!!) For 8.95 it was a ton of food and I was very happy with what I got. Everything was well seasoned and I loved the bit of cabbage under the chicken that added a really nice freshness to the whole meal. I ended up not finishing my meal because I was stuffed. The ambiance of the restaurant is super cozy and authentic. Our service was wonderful and this place definitely deserve the accolades it gets from the yelp reviews. The only reason why I'm docking one star is because we decided to order the Bubble tea slush and it was very disappointing. I ordered the matcha and my friend ordered the honey due. The ice was not grinded well and it just tasted like very small crushed ice with syrup or whatever flavoring. It was pretty pricy too (4.50 for a matcha bubble tea slush, more expensive than all other bubble tea places around) and it just wasn't very good compared to other bubble tea slush places nearby. We started out with veggie rolls and it was okay, I've had better. It was soggy and it didn't have the crunch I was looking for. The coconut rice was different but scrumptious. It had a hint of coconut and I honestly wouldn't mind if it had more of the flavor. The crispy chicken had the perfect amount of batter for the crunch. The sweet sauce that came with it gave it the wow factor which completed the meal. The macaroni salad wasn't drenched with mayonnaise (thank you for this) but it tasted bland in my opinion. It could've helped with flavoring if it had shredded cheese and pineapple chunks in the mix. A meal is never complete without dessert so we tried the peanut crepe and sesame balls. By the time we got there, a fundraising was going on so it was super crowded which made the vibe very fun and loud. The setting has like a Hawaiian vibe to it or beach vibes. The food did come out very slowly probably because of all the pick-ups from the college students grabbing lunch. The tea itself was okay, but I spat out the bubbles because they were tasteless and rubbery and had a very strange consistency.
