Due to a recent local event, they were completely out of curry puffs as well as beef for grilled entrees. The wait for food is reasonable, as everything's cooked to order. Veggie rolls were just okay, macaroni salad was fine. Their dried coconut isn't overly dehydrated, but the peanut butter makes the peanut pancake super rich and ideal for sharing. Loco moco didn't make me nostalgic for my Hawaii trips, but it didn't help that of the two fried eggs among our dishes, that one had been cooked through until no longer runny. Fried noodles were super filling, had a fair amount of chicken mixed in, and a hint of tangy flavor. Bubble tea is fine: reasonably iced milk tea and properly chewy tapioca pearls. Don't miss out on their satay or the coconut rice, those totally hit the spot-- I actually enjoyed the chicken satay far more than the grilled spicy chicken entree. Kokonut Grill is a great place to grab a quick bite. The menu is pretty simple, but that gives me the impression that they make a few things well. And for less than $10, that's a pretty great feat. Also, the portions were pretty substantial. It was enough for me to be content with, without feeling too stuffed or unsatisfied. (See photo) A box order comes with 3 sides (Wow!). I got the Spicy Slaw, Coconut Rice, and Macaroni Salad with Katsu Chicken. I highly recommend the slaw, and the Coconut Rice. They were super refreshing, and actually, the coconut rice was better than most I've tasted. For some reason, people try to make it very obvious that the rice was made with coconut, but Kokonut Grill (Despite the name) was a bit more lenient on the coconut flavor, and it gave it a delicious taste. The Katsu was good in some areas, but in other areas had a soggy consistency. The menu is clearly posted, but the cashier helped us make our selections with confidence. We ordered the Koko box, the Koko Mini & Satays. The food is made to order, and came out in a reasonable amount of time. Our food was delicious! I would give it 5 stars. It was flavorful & the portion size was appropriate for the cost. The customer service was also excellent. The two people we interacted with were friendly, and a gentleman who I assumed to be the owner, checked in with us to make sure the meal met our expectations. He even brought over basket of lollypops over for my son to pick one out. We ordered two Taro Bubble Teas to go, and we were told it would take 5 minutes to prepare the Bobo fresh. Fine with me, thanks for the heads up! The only reasons I did not rate this restaurant 5 stars: 1) No restrooms. I'm not sure how a restaurant can have no restrooms!? I have been wanting to try this place for the longest time, because it's not common to see Hawaiian food around. The location is super small and has its charm, but parking isn't the easiest (but when is it ever when you're downtown). The space inside the restaurant is roomy enough for some people to eat there, but I feel like I would come here for takeout most of the time. I ordered a mini box with grilled chicken/spicy garlic sauce and one coconut rice with mac salad, but I would definitely recommend the normal box if you're looking for more bang for your buck (about 2x the food for $1.50 more). The chicken was well seasoned and juicy, but not much spice to it. I would add some sriracha to it before I leave next time... I also wasn't expecting to like the macaroni salad, but I was pleasantly surprised! The mini box was definitely still filling, so I'm happy with the serving size. Overall no complaints, just praise! I've tried the shrimp (served shell-on), crispy chicken katsu, and their Malaysian bubble tea. Boy, my stomach is growling as I'm typing this up. The shrimp shells were a little bit of a nuisance but I don't mind rolling up my sleeves sometimes. Their milk tea is a little bit thicker, richer, and creamier in comparison to TT Lounge less than half a mile away. I'm only docking one star for the portion sizes (I'd dock a half-star if I could). I'm a pretty small girl with a pretty small appetite but I wish the scoops of rice were a little bit bigger. The shrimp was meaty but kind of hard to eat because of the skin (which was where all the flavor was). A pretty good place around VCU campus. A coworker suggested it and wanted to give it a try. Place is clean and adorbs. Plenty of seats. We parked and got our food and they were pretty fast with it. (We got our orders to go.) I ended up getting the half kokonut order of the spice beef, kokonut rice, a scoop of macaroni noodles, and an order of veggie eggrolls. Eggrolls were pretty good. It was crunchy on the outside and soft in the inside, the sauce that it came with was pretty great too! The rice was delish and on point and the spicy beef was seasoned nicely and had the right amount of spice. The noodles were good too, good food combo. I ordered the KoKo box with grilled chicken in spicy garlic, add egg, with mac salad, white rice, and the spicy slaw. The husband ordered the KoKo box with crispy chicken with sweet chili sauce, add egg, mac salad, sweet sour slaw, and white rice. Both dishes were good -- my spicy garlic chicken was cooked really well but the aftertaste of every bite was actually really salty and not so spicy. The spicy slaw was okay in my opinion, but what really stood out in my dish was the mac salad. What is usually heavy and makes me feel guilty after consuming was so delicious and light and sort of refreshing. So definitely get the mac salad. My husband's dish is another story. The crispy chicken is actually more of a chicken katsu, it was cooked to perfection. I didn't use any sauce but the bite I had was amazing. One thing that we didn't see on the actual storefront menu was katsu sauce which my husband would have preferred over the sweet chili sauce. The sweet sour slaw was also delicious and phenomenally better than the spicy slaw. The rating is definitely a 4.5 -- the spicy garlic needed to be actually spicy and not salty, it would have been perfect and it is a little on the pricey side including the additional things you might want. This restaurant is so cute, decorated with a very colorful, beachy and homey feel, even with karaoke ready to go on the side wall. I was greeted immediately and thankfully so because I was very confused and overwhelmed looking at the menu. The chicken was so crispy and moist. The sweet chili sauce was sadly not spicy at all, but very sweet, resembling a sweet and sour or mambo sauce. The coconut rice was one of my favorite parts! It had just the right amount of coconut flavor without being too sweet or overwhelming. The macaroni salad was pretty average, good but nothing too special. The cost is about $7-9 which is pretty reasonable. I probably could have gotten two meals out of that box. I ate it all and was almost uncomfortably stuffed = incredibly happy. I've been to Kokonut Grill for a while now, and I always leave satisfied with both the food and the service. If you're a first timer, you can't go wrong with the crispy chicken they serve here. I usually order the koko mini with crispy chicken, white rice, and macaroni salad. The crispy chicken tastes a lot like Korean/Japanese donkatsu, except it is more soft. I love love love eating it with the sweet chili sauce. The macaroni salad is a must, and the flavor is always consistent. I've also tried the crispy veggie rolls which are very tasty as well. Though I moved out of Richmond, I do visit often and each time I'm in town, I can't help but to eat at Kokonut Grill. Didn't know what to expect from this place as it was a spur of the moment decision to go. It is in a good location near the undergraduate campus. The place was small and not too crowded and we didn't have to wait very long before we got our food. We both ordered the boxes and were a little confused with the options for sides so we both just got the coconut and white rice and the pasta salad. I'm not complaining though because they had one of the best pasta salads I've tried. We also ordered grilled and crispy chicken. I will say that I preferred the grilled chicken in the teriyaki sauce over the crispy chicken. Also as a helpful hint, they use dark meat chicken over white in case you have a preference. In all the meal was good but I'm not sure we will be going back. I hesitate to write the next part of the review as I'm not sure if this is a one time occurrence. We saw a mouse in the building. I had the teriyaki chicken with macaroni, eggs and coconut rice and let me just say I've never known rice & coconut would be such an enjoyable pair! The moment we walked in we were greeted by whom I'm assuming are the owners. They were very informative on what they had to offer especially since we were new so that was really nice of them. My friend and I decided to get the koko box or something like that. It consisted of two scoops of rice (a choice of coconut or regular white rice) and a choice of some type of chicken along with a macaroni salad thing and a pineapple. I had the katsu crispy chicken and my buddy had the grilled spicy chicken, with both of us getting coconut rice. The coconut rice tasted like regular white rice but with a hue of coconut. Wasn't too strong but it was enough to think, "hey, is this coconut?," which is what I liked about it. The grilled spicy chicken on the other hand had a slippery texture. I didn't particularly like it that much. On the other hand, the katsu crispy chicken was really good. We were given katsu sauce to dip it in which definitely made the meal a lot better. The macaroni tasted like....regular plain macaroni, and I thought the pineapple was a cute way to top it all off. We also ordered Malaysian milk tea boba for desert, which was more or less like milk tea boba. The boba bubbles were a little undercooked though, but the milk tea itself was delicious. The male owner was very curious as to what we thought and asked us for our opinions when we finished. When we left, they courteously said thanks and good bye. Overall, this was a very refreshing place, something different and not too far from the VCU campus. I've heard a lot about this place from friends and it didn't let down. The owners are passionate about what they cook and how they operate, which made this experience as good as it was, especially since we came within an hour of closing. It might be good if by the time you think to take a picture you've devoured the whole meal. We live in sort of an awkward place for delivery, 15-20 min away from everything and food can get pretty sad along the way. we decided to try it anyway and the food carries really well and hit the spot in a major way.
