Talk about a quick and easy breakfast bite! We absolutely love to stop by on a Sunday and grab a few Kolache for the road. My go to order is two sausage gravy and jalapeño popper that comes with bacon, jalapeño and cream cheese. Each kolache cost between $2-3 so we can walk out of there only spending about $10 for the two of us! You can also have them warm up your Kolache at no extra charge. We leave fill and happy every trip. I have noticed that they do cater and I think it would be a great option for a baby shower or something of that nature.

I didn't even know KC had options like this until I saw pictures of it on social media. I didn't know what a Kolache was so I looked it up beforehand and decided to give this place a try. For those that don't know, a Kolache is a Central European pastry that is usually made with a topping of fruit jam and originated as a semisweet wedding dessert. At this location they had both dessert style options as well as breakfast and entree options as well. For example, I ordered a blueberry fruit jam kolache as well as a sausage/egg/cheese version. Both were good. The blueberry kolache wasn't overtly sweet, which I appreciate because I think too many of American desserts are sugar overloaded. The sausage/egg/cheese kolache was filled with the scramble and served as a nice mini breakfast in one. The dough for both was fluffy and soft. I tried kolache once in Seattle at a local shop, and these don't compare but they are good if you're looking for some new baked good options. Overall, the flavor profile was on the average side, but I definitely appreciated the great puffy texture and friendly service. I believe this restaurant is a chain, and glad to see KC expanding it's quick service eatery options for those on the go.

Everything flows. It's organized chaos done right. The seasonal drinks are consistently creative and actually good. Not just pretty for Instagram. Balanced, thoughtful, and well executed. And the bakery? Dangerous. The display case is pure temptation. Cinnamon rolls, pecan twists, danishes, cookies, scones. Everything looks like the right choice, which makes choosing impossible. They also have solid brunch plates and sandwiches if you're trying to pretend you're here for something other than sugar and caffeine. Now for the one miss. I ordered the pepper jack breakfast burrito, and unfortunately, it didn't live up to the rest of the experience. Flat flavors, mushy texture, no real identity. The hot sauce was doing most of the work. It felt out of place in a spot that clearly cares about quality. Thankfully, the bakery and coffee saved the day. The pecan twist was flaky, buttery, and just sweet enough. The seasonal latte with cold foam was smooth, balanced, and dialed in. Overall, McLain's is a Kansas City staple for a reason. Efficient, welcoming, and consistently good at what they do. One menu tweak away from being near-perfect. Solid 4-star spot. Would happily come back.

To step through its threshold is to surrender to the siren song of warmth that curls from the oven like a whispered secret. I have made it my pilgrimage to traverse the entirety of their menu, a culinary odyssey that has yielded no false steps, only a symphony of consistency that borders on the miraculous. Each offering, from the flaky, golden architecture of their pastries to the robust, honest comfort of their savory fare, is a testament to the artisan's hand. Here, affordability is not a sacrifice of quality but a generous invitation, a rare confluence where the exquisite meets the accessible. There is a certain magic in the air at McLain's, a sweetness that feels woven into the very fabric of the establishment. It is a place that understands the language of comfort, speaking it fluently in the dialect of a perfect crust or the rich, dark notes of a expertly pulled espresso. It is perhaps no surprise that such a bastion of authentic delight has garnered a reputation that extends far beyond our local borders; if the standard of excellence is high enough to grace the plate of Taylor Swift, then surely, it is more than enough for us, the grateful residents who claim this treasure as our own. Yet, beyond the flour-dusted counters and the glowing glass cases, my deepest admiration is reserved for their spirit. In a world that often measures worth in cold, transactional metrics, McLain's chooses to honor those who pour themselves into the future of our community. As a teacher, I feel that recognition in the small gestures, the welcoming nods, and the genuine appreciation they extend to educators. It is a profound kindness, a recognition that the work of shaping minds requires nourishment, both intellectual and literal. They understand that a classroom is a marathon, and they act as the essential pit stop, providing the fuel that keeps the light of inquiry burning bright. To dine at McLain's is to participate in a ritual of belonging. It is a place where the passage of time is marked not by the ticking of a clock, but by the turning of the oven trays. It is a reliable heartbeat in the neighborhood, steadfast and true, offering a reprieve from the clamor of the outside world. Whether one seeks a quiet moment of reflection over a cup of coffee or a celebratory feast that honors the simple, profound joy of eating well, McLain's remains an unrivaled steward of taste. It is not merely a bakery; it is the living, breathing soul of Waldo, a place where every bite serves as a reminder that some things in this life are exactly as good as they ought to be.

It's located in an unassuming strip mall and the inside feels very retro - like it's been this way forever, in a good way. Over the last five years or so I've enjoyed watching Mr. D's grow as the ownership changed to a young family and they embraced community in a new way. You can now find their donuts all over town as they collaborate with other local businesses and sell at farmer's markets around the metro. Despite gaining in notoriety this local spot remains humble and still has some of the kindest people working at this OG spot in Shawnee. Each donut is great - I personally think their apple fritter and classic cake donuts are some of the best. They also offer mochi now, which is a fun unique offering you can't get all over town. One of the best things about Mr. D's is despite being one of the best donuts in town they still keep costs reasonable - you're not going to break the bank going here and I love that they are doing their best to keep great treats affordable for families in their neighborhood.
