I've been going to Koll Center Dental for about 10 years and have had quite a bit of work done from dentists there. Up until about a year and a half ago, I was only lukewarm about my dentist. Then my former dentist left Koll Center, and Dr. Ewing came on board. I had not realized what I was missing! Let me explain,-- Dental work is expensive, and quality is hard to evaluate if you are not a dentist. I was never sure with my old dentist if I needed work done or if he was encouraging work on my teeth because *he* wanted the work. What I will say is that I had some work done that was not of high quality and didn't last, and some work done that I'm pretty sure didn't need to be done. When I started seeing Dr. Ewing, the staff raved about his work (the technical aspects), and seemed to be grateful to be working with him. He took the time to explain what looked good in my mouth and what needed attention and why. I'm a materials scientist (with an accompanying good BS filter), and so I had lots and lots of questions about materials he used (state of the art), durability, fit and finish of crowns, and what actually constitutes good dental work. Although younger than my former dentist, Dr. Ewing has lots of experience working for the VA, and really seems to know his dental tech. There have been some upgrades to Koll's equipment, and I have had Dr. Ewing replace a couple of my crowns that really needed replacement and the resulting fit and finish are as good as it gets. I am most definitely a satisfied customer. Dr. Ewing is a bit of a perfectionist, a stickler for detail, and yet comes across as honest and caring. He helped minimize my discomfort and worked with me to realize the best possible outcome for my teeth. Of all the specialists in the medical, dental, or other fields that I interact with, having a detail-oriented perfectionist as my dentist suites me just fine. If you need a new dentist, I cannot recommend Dr. Ewing highly enough. read more

My husband goes to Roger Chang DDS for his dental needs. Well, after a lot of prodding from me. Anyway, Dr. Chang advised my husband that he needed a consultation for a dental issue and the front desk lady said that it would be covered by my husband's insurance. Being a trusting person, my husband didn't call his provider to check and simply went along with the consultation. Lo and behold a $200 bill arrived in our mail box, courtesy of Dr. Chang. My husband was mad at Dr. Chang and I was mad at my husband. Fun day. I called the front desk lady and the insurance provider, and each stuck to their guns. I wanted to cry. Well, I think I did cry, but that's neither here nor there. As a last ditch effort, I wrote a letter to Dr. Chang and included our credit card information. I reminded him that he needs to look out for his patients and that not all of them (like, ahem, my husband) are going to check with their provider. Well, I am happy to report that today I received a phone call from Dr. Chang himself. Not only did he apologize, but he said they are not out to screw over their patients, he loves my husband (whoa!) and he was officially rejecting my payment. Three Cheers for Chang! read more

I came here after finding that all of the dentists in SF I could find on my insurance had some very concerning reviews on Yelp. I had heard good things about Koll Center and Dr. Ewing through friends, and even though I had to Bart and Uber out from SF the visit was very worth it. I had missed my last one or two cleanings after moving, and was happy to get back with a dentist who I knew would give me the straight truth, be extremely diligent and thorough in examinations and decisions. Dr Gavin and his staff are excellent. You feel comfortable when you enter the facility and all the way through the process. I just had a crown put on and two fillings. Amber was fantastic in assisting. No pain what so ever. Liz was there to help me on a Friday when I cracked the temp crown and got me back out quickly. Lucy always makes sure to give my teeth a good cleaning. If you have not been to Koll, I highly recommend going. I love the staff, especially Paige! Everyone is flexible with the scheduling and very friendly when it comes to switching my dental appointment. I've never liked going to the dentist because I hated the sound, but Paige made it comfortable for me because she let me listen to her pandora playlist! So sweet of her! She's very gentle whenever she cleans my teeth. I had my first deep cleaning with her and she made it super easy for me! If you're looking for a new dentist I would highly recommend this place! I hate the dentist and I never go. But when a pain becomes so extreme you have to look and find something scary it will lead you there. I looked online through my dental insurance in my area and feared I would end up at a Western Dental. Then I saw this place. I called first thing in the morning, explained I was not a patient, hated the dentist and was in terrible pain. The front desk got me an appointment with in two hours same day. Once going in I saw this was a really nice office. The staff was helpful and x-rays were painless. The Dentist new I was a looney about the Dentist(s) and told me everything he was doing. Mostly just looking. He found the problem and reviewed everything. Additionally, he gave me tips for the best financial route on addressed items that he found. Most times I have just got reemed for all my money. I felt like I could trust him, I felt like he cared. I had to be referred out to an oral surgeon because of the severity of what was going on. Through research I found out this actually fell under major medical and ended up going to my primary Doctor and everything was fixed. Although I hate the dentist and dread the future work I need, I feel comfortable and confident in returning here. Plus went seeing my Dr and a surgeon through my Doctor they also reviewed closley and basically confirmed all the dentist findings which further let me know he knows what hes doing. I HIGHLY RECCOMEND TO ANYONE especially people who are deathly afraid of the dentist like myself. read more

Update:One of my implants put in by Dr Ewing and another dentist who used to be the owner, was removed just over three months ago by a very good dentist in Pleasanton. Along with a third bone graft to that area. Koll dental did the other too. I did contact Dr Ewing but henever contacted me. Still waiting for a refund. read more

On the advice of my family I went to see Dr Gavin in the Koll center as an emergency patient. He was extremely helpful and managed to fit me into his schedule. Definitely hands down the best experience with Dr. Ewing. My mom was visiting me from China. And I saw her bridge that she had done in China was chipped. That was terrible dental work. Dr. Ewing took us in. He was very accommodating. My mom only had 3 weeks before she had to go back to China. There was a lot to be done and Dr. Ewing worked out an optimal treatment plan for us. He was compassionate and honest. He made my mom feel at ease and comfortable. He was so patient! The procedure was lengthy. He took his time to explain every step of the way. I really appreciated it. My mom's case is definitely a challenge one. He thinks outside the box and finds the best treatment approach for my mom. He takes into consideration of my mom's medical conditions and her lifestyle. Hi, I met Dr Ewing about two years ago when my original dentist Dr Evangalista introduced him as a new dentist who would be now helping me. Dr Ewing checked my mouth did a filling, gave me an electric toothbrush and asked me to write a review, I did not oblige, and the filling was fine. I had previously had a horrific experience at this dentist under one of Dr Evangelista's dentists,which caused a lot of bone loss and numerous stitches and months of healing, I wish I had taken legal action then, but Dr Evangalista is such a good dentist and he healed the wound and did a bone graft. I do not go ahead with one implant as I have suffered too much trauma to that area. Two years later Dr Ewing arrives and now both dentists are pushing me to get two implants next to each other,as I am now losing another tooth, I tell them I don't think I am a good candidate, but they disagree. I tell Dr Ewing that I am not comfortable with him doing,the implants and bone graft,and that I want my original dentist to do the job. Dr Evangalista agrees to do implants and bone graft, and does the surgery to put in the posts, one falls out after about two months and Dr Ewing successfully puts post back in. Then Dr Ewing informs me that he will be doing the crowns,and I allow him to do it, very bad move on my part. Dr Ewing attempts to place the two crowns and they are too short. This is not the first time, I have had the same problem when six crowns that were made for me three years earlier by original dentist. Places the second set of crowns and I am at home for weeks unable to floss. Go back very frustrated,Dr Ewing removes crowns reshaped them,put them back in. I now leave Dr Ewing and go to two new dentists. I now have a major problem with food getting trapped between implants and after seeing x-ray at new dentist I know why. Both dentists told me it was not a good job,so I sent the x-ray to Dr Ewing who obviously thought he's done a good job. Weeks go by as he discusses-it with fellow dentists, in the end I have to go to the office to see what he thinks of the x-ray and his work. I tell him before he looks in my mouth and at the x-ray that all I am looking for at this stage,is for him to admit to me that he did a very poor job. He admits he has done a poor job and wants to redo the crowns for nothing, there is no way at this stage that Dr Ewing,will ever do work on me again. Dr Ewing if you are reading this it would have been nice if you paid for my new dentist to do a good job. This procedure cost me $11,000. I wish you would pay for my new crowns so I don't have to think of you every time I eat. Nice personality, would not recommend as a dentist, there is so much better out there. Trying to get my records took months,my husband and I spent over $30,000 at this dentist over ten years. read more

I've been going to Koll Center Dental for years. I really liked Dr. Armstrong, but when he left, we stayed. I am extremely happy with Dr. Ewing. He does excellent work and is very caring. I am extremely pleased with the results of my many dental procedures. He does great work. There is an excellent staff in the office too. My daughter needed a lot of work done and was hesitant to go to the dentist. I told her about Dr. Ewing and she reluctantly went. Just got 2 cavities filled! Chose this place because it's much more affordable than my normal dentist. Gavin did an excellent and thorough job. Loved that he showed me pictures before and after rather than me just taking his word for it. Also it was the least painful filling I've ever had! The other people in the office (both Ambers and Liz) were also super nice. Awesome customer service! Ok this was such an overall confusing experience that I have to write 2 reviews. So this 5 star review is for the awesome front desk staff who were fantastic after talking me off a ledge and Dr Contreras. The girls in the front got me in on same day and were quite soothing. Dr Contreras honestly gave me the BEST filling I have ever had EVER!!! Whatever topical he used prior to the novacaine was amazing I felt nothing. Then since he could clearly tell what a super freak I was about the drill noise he did something that covered it up. I have never had this done and thought it was just amazing. Couldnt have left happier with the dental work. Great skills and patient care from the Dr and girls at front. Thank you!! OK Second Review is 1 star!! The dental assistant was so AGGRESSIVE. She shoved xray pieces in my mouth, couldnt focus a camera and expected me to evaluate based on blurry pictures and kept asking me in my face what I was going to do. This was my first visit to this office and I had a filling fall out that just needed to be replaced. I told the dr several times she was making me uncomfortable. This is the kind of uncomfortable where you are already on edge being at a new place, being at the dentist to the full blown cold sweat from fear... NOT PLEASANT. I couldnt even think. She didnt listen to a single word I said about my concern with dentists etc. The only reason she even gets one star is that she was fairly proficient in helping Dr Contreras with my filling (although he did ask her 4 times to do/get something before she did it). To his credit he never lost his patience with her and kept the same montone voice to not freak me out further. I am sure he is used to her. So in summary, 5 stars for Dr Contreras.. very proficient dentist and super nice front desk staff and 1 star for nightmare assistant. I would like to say I will come back for Dr Contreras but I just cant. Strip mall dentistry is not for me.. I am such a spaz I need a proper medical building. read more
