Why we didn't try this place before? If you want great authentic sushi and a charming Japanese setting, this is the place to go. We were grateful that they were able to accommodate our huge lunch group with no problems. The lunch combos are not expensive and had pretty generous portions. I tried a sushi lunch. We also tried their cheesecake and creme brulee desserts. Parking is free. There are bar seats for those who want to dine alone. The menu is huge so I recommend looking it over before your visit, although the server made great suggestions as well. Stopped by for lunch while visiting Austin. They have an extensive lunch menu with many good options, and I decided to go with the yellowtail kama (collar bone) lunch. Portion was very generous, and everything, including the salad dressing and ponzu dip for the grilled kama, looked and tasted like they are prepped in their own kitchen. Kama was grilled perfectly with charred skin, adding nice flavors to this perfectly grilled fish, and I enjoyed every bit of their salad. All is plated beautifully - very enjoyable meal. Delicious sushi! We started with the korokke (panko mashed potato croquettes with bits of corn, carrots, and peas, drizzled with a tonkatsu sauce) and the gyozas (pork & cabbage dumplings). Next, we tried the sunshine roll (salmon, avocado, mango, sesame seeds), the longhorn roll (steak, avocado, cream cheese, green sauce, sesame seeds), and the alone together roll (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, topped with bbq eel, go-go sauce, eel sauce, tempura crunch). The sunshine roll was my favorite - so simple, so refreshing, and the mango was an amazing touch. The longhorn roll was my runner up - so different from typical sushi, and a very different flavor profile compared to the sunshine roll. The alone together roll was double the price, but it underwhelmed us. They don't take reservations, so we came here for an early dinner at 4:30 pm on a Friday to avoid the crowds, and there were so many empty tables. One thing to note is that their mid-day menu differs from their dinner menu. They start handing out their dinner menus at 5 pm. From the dinner menu, my boyfriend highly recommends the brie tempura. We ended up having a wonderful experience!! The restaurant itself is spacious and has multiple sections/rooms to be seated. I think it's a great spot for larger parties! To drink I ordered the, "i love yuzu much sakè cocktail," i HIGHLY recommend it. It was so refreshing and crisp. Our friends and I went family-style with our sushi order. We ordered and recommend the following: The Rock-n-Roll, Texas Surf-n-Turf, Summertime, Tarantula and The Alone Together. Parking lot available. No reservations! THE BLACK AND WHITE: My wife and I were excited to try this place as the sushi spots in Austin are either very expensive omakases or mid spots. We heard Kome was excellent and at a great price. We got the two nigiri set (aka a mini omakase) that had 5 fish. They weren't bad but they weren't memorable for the pricing. We recently had a $55 13 piece omakase in new york and it was delicious. The karaage was decent and the mango avocado roll was a nice palette cleanser. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall this set us back ~$90 for 2x nigiri sets, karaage, sushi roll and 2 drinks. Nothing memorable that I would come back for more. read more

Always come here when visiting my brother because it's his favorite sushi place in Austin. The food is great and the fish is nice and fresh. The ochazuke was really good and something new for me. It comes with a kettle of broth on the side to pour over the rice and fish. The rolls were really good but the fat samurai was a bit difficult to eat bc of the size. It was quite busy and we did wait a little bit before we got sat. Our server was very nice and attentive when we needed something. It's quite packed in there and tables are a little close, so just be careful when you walk between some. It's a very warm environment with dim lights and a nice relaxed feel. A casual place to eat. Four stars for relatively high-quality sushi that is more affordable than many other nice sushi spots. I have been here a handful of times and have always enjoyed my experience. Although there is usually a wait, you can order drinks to make the time go by quickly. The space is pretty big and they do a good job of offering flexible seating arrangements (lots of space at the sushi bar) so they are pretty accomodating. Once seated, the service is excellent and they will quickly bring you your order. The food is not mind-blowing but is solid. I have never been disappointed by what I ordered. read more

Once seated, we decided to try a little of everything on the menu. I regret nothing, not even the stomach ache, from eating too much, afterwards. Just realized I've been going here since they opened in 2011. This is truly an Austin classic and there used to be more Japanese run sushi places and am so glad this place continues that tradition. They've streamlined the menu since I was last here. I don't think they offer liquor based cocktails either just sake, beer, and wine. They've focused on their sushi menu and they still have their classics on the menu. I was lucky they had their tsukji market special that 3 nigiri with fish flown from the market. Very unique and they each had toppings and sauces to accentuate the fish - definitely no need for added soy or wasabi. I also ordered the mobo tofu or ma po tofu which is hearty. It's a Chinese dish adapted in a Japanese style so more on the sweeter side but to me it's comforting and it had lots of soft tofu too. It was quite filling and warming for cool fall day. These entrees dont come with rice but you can add the Kome set which has miso soup, Japanese pickles, and a generous scoop of rice. To end my meal I had a piece of Japanese uni served nigiri style. Japanese nigiri isn't always available - you normally find the California one in town. It was such a special treat and sweet like the sea. The portion was also generous. Service is great here and they check on you often when needed. As for ambiance - it's still the same kitschy Japanese pop art. Love it. read more

I think about this place often and its been almost a month since I went. The nigiri was a good size and it was super fresh. For $22 I'd say that's a good deal considering how full and satisfied I was. It looks like a hole in the wall and its pretty easy to miss but I would definitely go here again if I visited Austin again. Our server was great too! I've spent years eating my way through Austin's sushi scene -- from strip-mall counters to omakase rooms -- so when I say Kome's reputation is more hype than substance, I mean it. The general manager carries this "we're the best in Austin" attitude, which is wild considering most serious sushi spots here are sourcing from the same Japanese markets anyway. There's nothing uniquely elevated happening -- the credit belongs to the line cooks and sushi chefs grinding behind the bar, not the front-of-house ego. Here's where it went off the rails: I was kicked out and permanently banned for smoking marijuana hundreds of feet away on public property, nowhere near their entrance. That level of overreach tells you exactly how they operate -- less hospitality, more power trip. In a city like Austin, where the hospitality culture is supposed to be welcoming and laid back, that kind of behavior sticks out in the worst way. I used to be a regular. I wanted to support them. But after spending time in other spots where the chef actually talks to you, the fish is just as good (if not better), and nobody acts like they're guarding the gates of some exclusive club, it's hard to justify going back. Yes, the space is pretty. But in this town, pretty doesn't make you the best -- and treating guests like they're disposable definitely doesn't. If you're plugged into the local food scene, you already know there are places doing it with more humility, better energy, and the same supply chain -- without the attitude. Kome could be great. The problem is they seem more interested in believing their own hype. read more

Stopped in for my first Komé visit in literally almost a decade, and was glad to see that they were still going strong with the same quality I remembered from back in the day. I stopped in for a chirashi bowl after actively craving one for a week straight, actively did my research on where I wanted to satisfy this craving, and ended up here at Komé. The atmosphere was good, service was quick, and the actual sushi was very high quality and smooth. They were accommodating of my gluten allergy, and were knowledgeable of any precautions and exclusions needed to make it safe. The wasabi was fresh and gave me the rush I was after, and overall I left happy. It was about a $40 lunch which is a bit of a splurge, but one I could see myself doing every once in a while when the hankering hits. read more

First time visit for a birthday lunch. Three of us had the sashimi lunch and the other had the gyudon rice bowl. Started with miso soup that's included with our meals and thought it was bland or your typical soup to cleanse your pallet. Staff were nice and attentive until it got busier but managed to still check in on us. When the entrees arrived, the presentation was pretty however in a larger bowl, you realize that you're not getting much to eat but all the fish selections were very fresh. My favorite was the salmon, tuna and scallop. Unfortunately, I left still hungry. The gyu don was very thinly shaved and fatty. At one point I thought it was tripe or fat netting lol. It was not like a stew and thought it was dry and bland. I may consider giving another visit to try other menu items. read more

However, we ordered nigiri which is our favorite. And noticed that both the fish and rice were extremely dry and unflavorful. We had a really attentive waitress the whole night. Started off with the takoyaki and kome viche. The takoyaki was good but very dense. The kome viche was so fresh and the balance of mango and fish was incredible, was disappointed that it was so tiny though. Truer the Midnight Sun, Love for Sale Roll, Summertime roll and the philly roll. My favorite was definite the summertime roll, loved the crunchy and soft balance.
