This place is a little hidden away, you'll have to park and then walk to the alley it's located (it's very clean and safe). The staff is very kind and friendly, and the decor of the restaurant is so cute, you'll just want to take a picture of everything! My friend and i tried ramen for he first time and we will need to try other places because we weren't too thrilled but maybe we aren't ramen people. I also love the Latin fusion they incorporate into a lot of their dishes. All of thier food is alot more affordable then most Sushi restaurants in town too! I visited Komodo Loco with high expectations, as it was one of the only Japanese restaurants in the area that had interesting-sounding cocktails. I also wanted to sample their ramen to see if it was on par with Hakata and Kurume. The Rickshaw, a yuzu vodka/sake mixed drink, was mediocre. The presentation was lackluster (just a lemon rind garnish) and the drink itself was very yuzu forward and drowned out the sake. The Green Tea Shot, on the other hand, was quite good. I was expecting the liquor to overwhelm the matcha, but I was pleasantly surprised that the green tea notes came through. I wish they had turned this one into a full-fledged drink instead of a tiny shot. The ramen, unfortunately, is terrible. The noodles are way overcooked, the chili-adobo broth too thin, and the miso tasted instant. I understand Komodo Loco isn't known for their ramen bowls, so I'll have to come back and try the rest of their menu, but why even have sub-par ramen on the menu? read more

My friend and I came in around 6 PM. It wasn't that busy, so we were seated as soon as we got there. We had to wait quite a while for a waitress to serve us, and when she got us water and took our orders, she didn't seem that happy about it. I'm not sure why it took so long, considering we were the only ones in our section. We ordered the Loco Dragon and Maki Style Salmon to split and it came out after 5-10 minutes. The Loco Dragon was really good, but the Maki Style Salmon looked a little rough. These are the best three items to get. you have three choices in bao, chick, pork belly, and tofu. The chicken beats the others but only by a thin margin. Whoever made the tots this time around put an abundance of kimchee on top which I'm not mad about. One thing I have noticed over the course of a year is the boa seems to get smaller and smaller. It was my first time ordering from here and I must say it did not disappoint me. The flavor profile were on point and the quantity of food was pretty decent for the price I paid. Would definitely recommend to people who are craving for some sushi here at Denton. The only issue was, the food (fried rice) got a little cold when delivered to me via Doordash. This place is everything you expect and more. I am extremely pleased that they make sure to advertise themselves as Asian Fusion and not authentic Asian. It's definitely a fusion for sure, and they definitely make it work! So let's break this review into three parts: service, ambience, and food. 1. Service. Our server Emily was super friendly, prompt and attentive. Everything you'd want in an anazing server. 2. Ambience. This is a really really cute place for a date night. The place has a cool, chic, Asian flare. They definitely have the Asian theme decor down but they incorporate bright pops of red, turquoise, and lights. The outside patio is very quaint but cute. I feel like it's eclectic but in a good way. 3. Food. The main reason for Yelp. It was absolutely the best incredible. We have the pork belly baos, salmon kamodo tower, and the Southern Smoke ramen. We also had the "carafe" of lychee sake which is basically just the entire bottle. 10% alcohol so watch out! The bao was great. The pickled veggies used were perfect, not overly sour and the pork wasn't overly fatty like other places. The kamodo tower was very pleasant. It had a surprise kick of spice but it was not overwhelming. Finally, my favorite dish, the ramen. It definitely is not authentic but I love it because it doesn't want to be or pretend to be. It states on the menu that it's where "East meets West" and it held true to its statement. The noodle had a delightful chew to it. The broth wasn't overly salty and was richly enhanced by the smoked pork. It's what you'd imaging a "Texas Ramen Broth" to taste like. The egg yolk was perfectly cooked, being a bit runny, as ramen eggs are supposed to be and the corn has a exquisite char to them making each bite more and more enjoyable. Komodo has elevated sushi, ramen etc that is inventive without being stuffy you can bring anyone and get excellent dishes. The ramen had such a beautiful broth. I've been looking forward to trying this place since it opened 3 months ago, but hadn't finished laying the ground work with my less than adventurous eater, the husband. Luckily I met up with yelp friend, T.W. who also wanted to try this place! The first thing you need to know is parking. Oakland is a tiny, tiny street that runs between Hickory and Oak. On Hickory there is limited back in (ugh, pain) parking but keep in mind that there are a ton of other restaurants on Hickory and Industrial. There is no parking at all allowed on Oakland, a one way street toward Oak. Luckily, at the end of Oakland, on Oak (lots of tree names) there is a public parking lot. That is definitely your best bet unless you like walking. Komodo Loco has a nice, sleek set up in an older building in the historic part of town. There is exposed brick with minimal decorating to really encompass the feel of the building, I'm glad they didn't cover it up too much, it was modern and a good mix of fancy and casual- no ties required here but still a good date spot. There is a variety of seating, including large tables, half booths, the bar and when I went to the restroom I saw seating near the kitchen- so cool! So immediately I loved the vibe and wished I could have taken more photos of the restaurant. I had been told that reservations are a good idea after 6pm on Friday and Saturday. Since this is a dinner only place for now, they fill up pretty quick. We arrived 5 minutes before they opened at 4pm and they seated us right away. You also have the option to view their menu online and place a to go order. The menu is small and straight forward, yet I was still experiencing menu anxiety, and T.W. and I were trying to decide what to share, etc. They serve Maine Root sodas, cocktails and beer. We got the duck wings for an appetizer, which were awesome- the best, crispy skin and tender meat, I really love how crispy they got it and will order again! It was served with two sauces and though the spicy orange tasted good, I didn't think it needed any sauce. For the entrée, I got a rice bowl and my fellow yelper tried the ramen, both of us got the pork belly. The ramen was good and she pointed out that the shoyu that came with it really brought it to life. However, I feel the winner was the rice bowl, I loved everything about it. The rice was well cooked and really soaked up the flavors of the sauce, veggies and protein. Let's talk pork belly: some people like a lot of fat on theirs but I prefer more meat and less fat. There's quite a bit of both but the fat literally melted in my mouth, this is the way to do pork belly. I kid you not, I would order a side of pork belly by itself because there was never going to be enough in that dish for me, I wanted more and should have asked for extra. For those of you who can't use chopsticks, fear not, they give you utensils as well! We decided to order and split the Loco Dragon tempura roll for $15. There was a bit of miscommunication about this as we were originally told that it could be made non spicy, it turns out, it's cooked in serrano pepper and this is one of the few dishes that could not be made non spicy. I do want to say it was a large portion of sushi which made the price easier to swallow. The first bite I tried had some heat to it at the end, quite a bit actually, and I thought it had too much cream cheese. Thinking the spicy crab on top was what I was tasting the heat from I removed the topper of cream cheese and crab for my second piece. Oh my God, my mouth was on fire, I was told the look on my face was quite entertaining. Turns out the cream cheese and crab topper are what kept it from disintegrating my tongue. Once the confusion was cleared up, we replaced that roll with the Komodo Cali which was tasty and an impressive portion for $6. By the way, they comped both rolls which they seriously didn't have to do as we both ate the Komodo Cali and took the left overs. They clearly take service seriously and want their patrons to be satisfied. Speaking of service, our service was a bit awkward and our server had a lot of nervous energy and seemed to still be in training compared to the other servers nearby. However, all of that melted from my mind when one of the three owners, Kyle, came by to check on our table. Kyle took the time to explain their dishes and how they can modify them or make something new to accommodate their customers and also clarified how the Loco Dragon could not be made less spicy. I really appreciated the explanation. He's a great example to owners of other businesses; friendly and passionate and engaged with customers. He also had some exciting news about some of the dishes they are adding to the menu which made me impatient to come back and try them. He also mentioned they eventually plan to open for lunch which is exciting to me, I can't wait! This place is great and constantly evolving with a real vision. From the get go the service was on point, we 3 children with us ages from 4-5 years old and she was awesome with them. I wanted to like this place, I really did, but it just didn't rub me the right way. I'm used to authentic Japanese/ramen joints, but that said, I didn't expect a super authentic experience going into this. I also enjoy well done Asian fusions, so I was hoping for a closer ramen option in Denton. Unfortunately if you have experience with authentic ramen and enjoy tasty pork belly like me, this place will not fulfill your desires. If you're coming from a clean slate with no previous expectations, you might find this place more up your alley. We ordered their pork belly ramen, pork belly rice bowl, and their beef fajita roll. All together, our bill was $40 after tax. Their pork is more meaty and thicker cut than most. Almost a mix of a pork loin and pork belly, but ours was overcooked. If you're expecting the typical, fattier chashu, you're going to be disappointed with the pork they provide here. If you prefer meatier pork, you might have a better experience here. Unfortunately the ramen was not what I was expecting, and underwhelming. The noodles in my opinion are overcooked. They're not al dente, they're very soft. The broth felt undone. It felt like they started the process, cooking the bones to create broth, but stopped there. No seasoning, no additions, but room for potential. The pork belly, as mentioned above, was meaty and not like the chashu I'm used to. I did enjoy the soft boiled eggs in the ramen though. (They're not marinated soft boiled eggs, just normal soft boiled eggs FYI) The rice bowl was just okay. Nothing extremely great, nothing extremely bad. It compares to most rice bowls I've had at American style Asian joints. Good enough, but nothing to write home about. The beef fajita roll was good, if you enjoy non-typical rolls. The sauces and pico on top went well together, so it was enjoyable. Tasted good, but once again, nothing to write home about. The one thing I did really appreciate about this place though was their staff. Everyone was friendly, and they seemed to have everything together considering they haven't been open long. My two star rating is based off of the fact that I was hoping for something more authentic. I haven't seen many reviews on the ramen yet, and I know there are decent amount of people just like me out there that were hoping for a review regarding authenticity. My feeling of the place still stands, everything is just OKAY. I expected the kimchi dragon eggs to have more of a kick, but they weren't anything to rave about. They didn't really make me think of kimchi. When I received my spicy salmon roll, I thought they made a mistake and gave me a normal salmon roll (that's not on the menu though). The roll was not in the least bit spicy, and I tend to be a bit sensitive when it comes to spice. Also the salmon was oddly distributed within the roll. Some pieces had almost no salmon, and then others had too much. When the ramen came I was actually a little upset. Last time we received the ramen we were missing some of the veggies and the roasted corn that my friend's ramen had today. Despite the additions, my opinion of the ramen still stands. I went with a group of six people and the service was really great. I can honestly say that each person, even the pickiest jerk in the group was incredibly happy. We really couldn't shut up about how good it was. I got the pork belly totchos. They were delicious, spicy and very filling. I also got the spicy salmon rolls which were amazing, but not very spicy.
