You know a place is good when it's open less than a month and the stellar reviews keep rolling in. Two words: Zaaaaaam Bae!
Okay, okay...here's the thing, I think this Kona Grill could definitely earn a 5 star review from me in the future because like I said it's still in it's first month open so of course it's constantly packed and there are some kinks that need to be worked out. But overall, I am quite fond of KG and I will be a returning customer.
Yesterday I hit up KG for Albert K's UYE/Angie M's birthday at happy hour. And I've learned one extremely valuable lesson: while the prices at KG are relatively low compared to a lot of places in this desert, HAPPY HOUR IS THE TIME TO GO! Each of my rolls were under $4! Crazy low! And the quality was so much better than any $4 sushi roll I've ever paid for (Albertsons sushi...I was young and dumb once, I didn't know any better). When I got my bill I did a little dance, shouted "A dollar makes me holla!", and contemplated ordering six more rolls just because...of course all of this went down in my head.
R-r-r-rewind...
Walking in I was a little perturbed by the hostess. I was running a little late so everyone else was already seated, but typically when I walk in somewhere with a hostess I'm greeted and if my table is already seated I politely decline being seated and I let them know what table I'm looking for. I walked in stood right in front of the hostess and waited for acknowledgement...never happened. Alas, I navigated my own way through this rather busy place and found my table. Interesting.
I'm just going to say this...service sucked. Ya, they smiled and all that jazz, but the devil is in the details and a lot just ran over the servers heads. Yes, I realize it was busy...however I wouldn't expect crappy service from Chili's just because there's a wait (mind you it was busy at KG, but there was no wait) so the only reason I'm letting it slide is because they're ALL new employees.
When I arrived the table had already ordered an app and their rolls. Their app had already arrived, but no one had plates. Very interesting. We were an 8-top table so that should translate to a bigger tip...step up your game, man! Anywho, I stole one of the Avocado Egg Rolls and I will say those things are delish! Crispy on the outside, smooth on the inside and the perfect honey-cilantro dipping sauce.
I live in Margaritaville so when Angie told me about the Raspberry Margarita I knew I had to have one (I also tried Albert's Mango Margarita and boy is that thing good). The waiter appeared at the table to refill the waters and such, but didn't acknowledge me. Hmmmm...very, very interesting. When he came back with someone's refill I butted in and asked for a Frozen Raspberry Margarita. He was friendly about the order, carded me (which I'm okay with...but I'm pointing out because it's vital to this story) and brought it out promptly. No biggie. Then he returned with plates...minus one for me. I get it dude...I was late. But maybe he just counted wrong, whatevs. So since he carded me, him and I both know that he knows that there is an added guest to the table. He never asks to take my order...yes, I had to ask him if I could order. If this happened in any other instance I wouldn't even give it a second thought, but c'mon man there are just too many issues with service lining up. So I order after everyone's sushi arrived (their rolls didn't come out until maybe 20-25 minutes after I got there). The one saving grace was the fact that after I ordered my rolls arrived in less than 5 minutes. End service issues rant.
Let's talk about food, man! I ordered the Philly Roll and the Spicy Tuna. Loved 'em both. Nothing out of this world spectacular (they're pretty basic rolls, but for happy hour prices...I'm in!), but they were fresh and had the perfect rice to filler ratio. And I have a weird thing for eel and eel sauce so I asked for a side of eel sauce which they happily provided...a small amount of eel sauce takes a Philly Roll to a whole other level. If I do the Spicy Tuna again I will probably ask for a side of Siracha or Spicy Mayo because it was a little mild, but regardless it was fresh tuna and fresh tuna is the way to my heart! Oh and before I forget, the margarita was heaven! Made exactly how I like my margaritas and men...strong and sweet!
The ambiance is really thought out. Lighting is perfect and the outdoor seating looked really inviting (bonus points for having misters!). It's a very open floor plan, but with the mix of bar seating and table/booth seating, it really helps to separate everything.
I like Kona. I'll be back. And I'll definitely update this review once I've experienced it without all the first month gitters. read more
