Riyomas is the best place in town for traditional sushi and well worth the price. We have followed Ungí chef /owner since he owned Jackpot Sushi in northeast El Paso. He is a wonderful sushi chef he took over Riyomas when original owner retired. The food is great and the prices are competitive. I stumbled upon this place looking for "decent" sushi. I'm so glad I did because they are far more than decent. Let's start off with saying, I've been to the original markets in Japan and have had sushi there. This is not that, HOWEVER, in consideration for it being El Paso, TX where sushi is not on the map here, this place is worth the shout out. I had a donburi, fresh sashimi and multiple rolls. I've been here several time and although the items can add up, I never leave feeling disappointed even with a heftier price tag. The food is made with the freshest ingredients and the sushi is hand crafted in front of you. The UNI was especially sweet and being that I know the authentic type should come in a wooden box, we'll you know it did when the sushi chef brought it out. The staff is as friendly as if being in Japan. They truly cared if we enjoyed our dish and truly apologetic if an item was out...which to me, is a good sign. Selling out is better than being discounted on food, so you know there is constant turn over. This place is a gem in EP. continue to support them and keep them alive. I'm always skeptical about seafood in El Paso, but the reviews here about the fresh fish convinced me to give it a try. Ambiance - Plenty of seating with a traditional Japanese feel. The server was very patient and even told me that they kept their fish fresh by importing it from LA on a weekly basis. Food - Tried a ton of different things, but the outstanding ones were the sushi. As expected, the fish itself tasted fresh and well made. My only issue was that while the fish was really good, the rice was definitely not up to standard (which is odd, because it's usually the other way around?) Overall, while I enjoyed the experience overall, it is a bit far from the West side and the rice was just not up to par. I'm giving it a 4 because of the quality of the fish, but I just wish the sushi was balanced with good fish AND good rice. Hopefully this happens during the next visit. read more

I'm a sushi aficionado. And this place is always very satisfying. I wish the ambiance here was more comfortable and relaxing; alittle romantic. I think what they need to do is dim the lights alittle bit. Other than that, I love this hidden jewel. My sons and I started with Gyoza dumplings w a special dipping sauce. They were tasty. My youngest son is a dumpling expert and he gave them two thumbs up. I also ordered the Vegetable Tempura. The portions are smaller than most Japanese restaurants. But they are tasty. We ordered 4 rolls. The rainbow roll is always a great choice because you get to sample how fresh the sushi truly is. It's not deep fried and they are not clouded with cream cheese. And the fish here is fresh. The caterpillar roll was very tasty. And the presentation is awesome. If you have kids, order this roll. They will love it. The Crunch roll was my favorite. It has shrimp tempura inside the roll and the outside is really crunchy. It's a great change from the previous two rolls that are soft and mushy. This was my favorite roll. My least favorite was the Crown Roll. It's warm and I don't like warm sushi rolls. It's also covered with a spicy mayonnaise sauce. This is just my preference. I don't like the mayo sauce. But my sons liked the warm roll. For a change. I highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a great relaxing and quiet place to have fresh sushi. Yum. read more

I'm not too familiar with the El Paso Japanese food scene but was quite impressed with Riyoma's service and food. Ambiance is pleasant and has plenty of seating. My mom and I both ordered lunch sushi combination which includes miso soup, salad, a hand roll and 4 pieces of sashimi all for $13. I currently live in Maryland and you'd be lucky if you get half of a day-old California roll with that amount. Pretty good sushi restaurant owned by a Korean guy. Ive been there twice and both times I enjoyed their meal. The restaurant is clean and bigger than it looks. If you don't know what to get, I recommend their Chirashi. It's big and filled with many kinds of sashimi. This review could have had another .5 star if it wasn't for their service. Highs: Me and the bf came here on a Friday night for sit down service. The place is tiny so you can see that they fill up quickly. We were seated right away and most other tables were filled with only a few remaining seats at the sushi bar. The food was AWESOME!! From the starters to the iced green tea, we loved everything. I was a bit sad that they didn't have any shumai but got over it quickly. We had: Soft-shell crab (smallish side but still yummy) Cruncy Roll (huge but delish!) Philadelphia Roll Salmon Egg Roll (don't call it roe, it confuses them) Ginger Beef (my favorite all night) Salmon Shiyoyaki (fresh and clean) $87 for two All-in-all, the prices were more than fair especially based on sushi bars in LA or NY. Our dinners were served with miso soup, green salad & a katsu like chicken/onion stick. Everything was absolutely delicious and fresh. The iced green tea was SO refreshing and balanced the rest of the meal. If I had complaints it would be that on a busy Friday night they literally had one waitress and the hostess who went from busing tables, to running the register to taking orders and serving meals. The service was a wee bit slow but luckily the food made up for it. The sushi chefs were a bit slow as well and we were actually served our sushi at the very end of the dinner which by then, we were too full to eat more than a piece or two. We did like the food so much (especially that ginger beef) that we ordered it for takeout the next night and tried the tempura appetizer, gyoza (still no shumai!) and ginger pork. All was still fabulous and we did notice that the place was less-packed. So after spending about $150 here over the weekend, I'd say that I am definitely a fan! read more

Two words: Hot Mess. I used to believe that 'hot mess' referred to one being a total disaster...and not in a sexy way either. Although, I have yet to confirm this. Usually when one of my friends refers to themselves or another close friend as a "hot mess", they almost mean it in a good way. Like how Drake makes sweat pants sound like a sexy outfit. But when they're talking about anyone outside the holy-female-BFF circle, a 'hot mess' is a bad thing. I now know, 'hot mess' literally means a mess that is hot (temperature wise). Because of the many great reviews, I do intend to try Riyoma again...eventually. Maybe my visit was just a fluke. And I'm hopeful that my opinion will change. But for now...2 stars. This years Valentine's Day was not filled with chocolates, flowers, and dinner reservations for me. Just another day, but a girl's still got to eat. Rather than chose some fancy dining experience that was sure to have a line outside the door (even though it was before 4 pm), I chose Riyoma after driving by and looking at the pictures on Yelp. It just looked like a simple Japanese restaurant. I walked into what can only be described as the most disgustingly hot restaurant I've ever been in. I know it's February, but we're in El Paso...c'mon guys, it's at least 75 degrees out. Fans are off, air conditioner is not running, the lady at the sushi bar is fanning herself with something she stole off another table. Is the heater on? But I push through and take a seat at a table anyways. I was wearing leather and spandex leggings with a black cami and a sweet leather jacket. Together, my outfit was seriously on point (not to toot my own horn, but TOOT TOOT), but without the jacket I kind of look like I'm going to go workout in my leather and spandex leggings. After asking for a Sprite because there is no way in hell an Iced Tea will quench my thirst in this oven, I debate taking the jacket off and looking ridiculously under-dressed or just burning alive, but looking good while I do it. Eventually I go the with the workout look. When my Sprite finally arrived, it came in a can. A can?!? Had I known the waiter was going to try to kill me via dehydration I would've snuck in contraband in the form of 99 cent 2 Liter Sprite bottles from Wal-Mart. At the time I came in, there were only 10 other tables that were filled and two waiters. I waited at least 15 minutes to order after getting my Sprite (not after ordering the Sprite). No joke, he dropped off the Sprite and didn't even wait for my order. That's okay, I wanted to just sit here in hell and draw on the chopstick wrapper anyway. I didn't want to get the sushi because the pricing didn't make any damn sense to me. The Spicy Tuna Roll is more expensive than the Eel Roll...huh? But they were both over $8...the heat and my confusion consumed me and a threw aside the sushi menu. Eventually my friendly, but Houdini-like server returned and I ordered the Shrimp Tempura plate. Never. Ever. Again. The Shrimp Tempura plate had four parts to it. A salad, fried pork on a skewer, miso soup, and of course the shrimp tempura. Salad: Composed of Iceburg Lettuce and carrots with an orange dressing and a taste I couldn't quite place. Not impressed. This has nothing to do with my overall opinion on Riyoma, but I had to eat the salad uncomfortably slow because my nails have gotten longer than usual (I just haven't had the time to get them done) and Houdini was no where to be found to ask for silverware to replace my chopsticks. That Houdini...always playing tricks on unsuspecting guest...what a hoot! Fried Pork: It was a palm-sized portion of breaded fried pork. This I wasn't mad at, but a side of the sauce would've been nice. Miso Soup: A tad salty, two pieces of tofu, a few green onions and three pieces of seaweed. I've had worse and I'll just leave it at that. The Shrimp Tempura: Two things that killed me about this dish; 1) The shrimp was overcooked and 2) There were only 4 pieces of shrimp. This plate is a $15 dish. Had Riyoma not been visited by the devil and Houdini not be working that day, the ambiance still does not get the Shrimp Tempura plate to a $15 price point. I'm just going to say this...they have green carpeting*. I wish this came with some kind of sauce, Siracha even, just anything to make it more than a one note dish. But like I said, maybe my experience was a fluke. So I'll give it another shot one brave day. *If you can't read through the lines, what I'm saying is this place is not fancy at all. read more

Recommended by a Japanese friend, I ventured out here from NE for Saturday lunch. It probably is the most Japanese-like sushi bar/restaurant inside in terms of decor, sushi bar and tatami rooms. It was nice and bright inside as I entered. Since I was eating alone I proceeded straight to the counter and chose a chair near the sushi chef. There was a white board with lunch special menu (photo). I knew what I was going to try this time by the recommendation of my friend, so I really didn't need the sushi order slip a server brought me when she took my drink order. When she came back with my drink, I ordered chirashi ( assorted sashimi on a bed of sushi rice)--photo--from the Lunch Special menu for $16. It had two pieces each of maguro (tuna), hamachi (yellow tail), tako (octopus), sake (salmon), kaibashira (scallops), and one piece of ika (squid--I wondered why there was only one, but I remembered I had told the server I couldn't eat shrimp) as well as two pieces each of tamago (sweet eggs) and imitation crab meat. Fish pieces were very fresh and tasted very good. As I was finishing my bowl, I contemplated whether I should order anything more... Since I was a little hungry, I decided to order Lunch Special Sushi Combo of four pieces of sushi and a tuna roll for $13. Tuna roll itself is $7 when ordered by itself and two pieces of sushi is at least $6, so it was a better deal. Besides, it truly filled my stomach. The only disappointment was tai (Japanese sea bass) got substituted with saba (mackerel) which is probably my least favorite fish for sushi. I wished chef would've asked me if I wanted something else, but oh well... Overall, great experience eating sushi and sashimi at Riyoma. When I'm in a mood for sushi, I would come back here for sure. Really enjoyed the food. The restaurant was empty when we arrived for dinner which made us slightly nervous however the food and service was so so good!! We got the sushi deluxe platter and the sushi was very fresh! The dinner meals we ordered were delicious and they came with soup salad and a piece of fried chicken! And the portions were very generous. The servers were very accommodating when we asked for extra spice and mentioned food allergies. They even brought us a whole jalapeño! Riyoma is by far the best sushi restaurant in east El Paso. I've tried several and while tasty, nothing has had the freshness and creativity that Riyona provides. I would recommend sitting at the sushi bar. We've gotten to know KC, the sushi chef, and don't even bother with a menu. Below are some of the items he created based on our pallets.
