I also indulged in their Chicken Satay and a pint of Kona Big Wave for $3 a piece, and we selected a handful of other options for the table to share. Extremely disappointed by our happy hour visit. This has been one of my favorite spots for a long time to come in for power lunch and happy hours. Our bartender was amazing. Service wasn't the issue. Drinks were great. However, in the last couple weeks since I last came in, they changed the potstickers from 6 to 3 for $9 which is barely even a "deal" anymore. Everytime I've ordered them they've been fried. They came out seared instead this time, but they fixed it. Not a huge deal. The huge disappointment was the bbq chicken flatbread. This has been my go to for 7 years- every single time I come to Kona I get this and have never seen it like this. I asked for no onions, but they also left off the cilantro without mentioning it. They also downsized the size of the pizza from a full flatbread pizza to 4 lousy triangles (also not mentioned they changed it). It came out hard and tough. Hanging in San Antonio with my wife for the weekend. Hmmm, haven't seen a Kona in my hood in years. Had some success with happy hours back in the day at the Houston Galleria location. We've walked around North Star Mall. Had a heated negotiation over an overpriced Rolex at Gurinsky's. Didn't buy, BTW. Now, I'm needing some libations to settle the mood. Here we come to bar seating at Kona. Didn't realize RA Sushi, Benihana, and Kona are all under one company. Seems like you're betting alot on Asian. Modified my own margarita to feature Yuzu flavor. Had to actually research Yelp menu photos as the KG website doesn't even have what I decided to snack on. Sushi and Salad! Your basic raw tuna roll with your choice of a few nigiri. Good bites; fresh enough for this Country Bumpkin. I will point out a few observations over the years. First Kona has already went through a bankruptcy. Bought by the current restaurant group way back now. I noticed a 2017 review by Tomas R. that's points out happy hours are a good value here. BUT, the rest of the restaurant is empty. Bar only happy hours are great but it comes at a price when nobody is willing to dine on the rest of the menu. Same empty spaces seen at the Domain location (now closed) and the Houston Galleria (also closed). You can only reinvent the roll so many times. Same with eggrolls, edamame, satay, and the pulverized ramen salad that accompanied my sushi. Honestly, I had truly forgotten about this salad from the 2000s! We were in San Antonio for our son's Air Force graduation. Unfortunately it was Thanksgiving week. So here we go fly half way across the country and thought where can we have Thanksgiving with the family. Kona grill was the place we choose and I have to say the meal in itself was delicious . I have 2 things that instantly put me off on a restaurant, visible cleaning supplies in view of diners, and skin left on the onions in an onion ring. The staff was lovely and attentive, but the food missed so many notes that we will be hard pressed to return. Both the onion rings and fries were not hot when delivered to our table and tasted like frozen product. The Lox flat bread was actually pretty decent, but the rest was generic at best. Overpriced food that tastes extremely disappointing. Out of the several items ordered, the sliders were okay. Meatballs and steak were overly salted 50/60 dollars for a steak that bad was shocking. Mac and cheese was greasy, not "very cheesy" like the waitress stated, and tasted freezer burned and reheated. Sushi is mediocre , like grocery store sushi. We also got the desert board for free and that was okay. I was asked by a server (not the waitress) how everything was and I told her the truth, this led to a conversation with the manager and he did give me some discounts and did not seem upset with us about the situation so thanks to him but afterwards our waitress, who started out nice seemed to be in a bad mood. I told her I still gave her a $9 tip even though the food was bad and she did not seem to care. The restaurant presents itself as high end and the prices are definitely high end so this was just an extremely disappointing experience especially since it was during our vacation. We made a reservation as it was Mother's Day and assumed y'all would be busy. We were then offered a high top in the bar, I said no as I had children with me. They sat us in the corner by the bar by the restrooms and the exit for severs to take care of patio guest. The restaurant was disgusting, I watched 3 managers and multiple other staff just ignore the mess and kept walking by. Then a wait staff member still on uniform sat at the high top closest to us. Which led to managers, other staff, and the bar staff to come hang out. It was loud rude and behavior that obviously managers promoted. For the cost of the food we had expected better. Our food came out wrong, cold, and we were even charged for their mistake. I am in no way saying we shouldn't have been charged at all, but when you waiter screw up and sun chicken for shrimp instead of adding shrimp. Charging us for the chicken was bull because the dish came with the chicken and we were already paying extra for the shrimp add on. The uncleanliness of the restaurant extended into the ladies room. Trash over running, paper and hairballs all over the floor, soap dispenser empty. Definitely will not be going back! read more

It was a Saturday midafternoon, and I was craving something that had both seafood and salad. I was randomly looking around on Google Maps and stumbled upon Kona Grill, a restaurant that I had actually just passed by while visiting The Shops at La Cantera earlier that day. This location, however, is at North Star Mall right off the 410 just west of the 281. Those are Kona Grill's only two locations in San Antonio, so it only made sense to stop by this one too on the same day. I was looking at the menu online and saw that I could get a salad with an add-on for shrimp. That would have satisfied both requirements mentioned in the intro of this review, so I made it a point to go there. This Kona Grill is on the north side of North Star Mall, so if you forget, just think of the cardinal direction mentioned in the mall's name lol. However, I don't suggest parking on that side of the mall unless you want to pay for valet. For a mall of this size, the lot isn't nearly spacious enough to accommodate for all customers and employees, and when you add in the valet parking taking up about half of the space, good luck trying to find a spot on your own! Luckily, I did, but given how much of a pain it was to even find parking in the first place, I didn't want to return even if the food was good. Kona Grill has two entrances at the same corner of the restaurant. One is an exterior entrance, and the other is a mall entrance, but they are just a few feet from one another. The hostess (Destiny?) was there to greet me. I asked for a takeout menu, and she handed me a paper menu. I looked at the menu, but the look of the menu was quite different. And because of that, I couldn't remember which salad I was looking at in the first place. However, something else caught my eye that I missed on the website: a poke bowl! And guess what it contained? Salad! And it was also the same price as a large non-Asian salad with shrimp. On the menu, the conjunctions threw me off. My mind was playing the first two lines of Schoolhouse Rock's Conjunction Junction song on repeat, except when it asks "what's your function?" I would say, "confusing customers and hiding upcharges" instead. Why? On the menu next to the poke bowl, it says, "choice of tuna, salmon, tuna & salmon, or shrimp + sushi rice or field greens, green onion, avocado, seaweed salad, cucumber, macadamia nuts, Hawaiian poke sauce". What's not mentioned on the menu is if you choose tuna & salmon, it's an extra $2, hence the "hiding upcharges" part. Why is that not mentioned on the menu?! Also, the way it was stated was confusing. Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally, but it's kind of like in mathematics, when you omit the parentheses, it could make the equation or expression open to multiple interpretations. Like I almost thought shrimp + sushi rice was a separate option, and field greens et. al was another. While I don't think adding parentheses to the menu will necessarily help, I wish they could be more clear on what's included and be more upfront about their upcharges. I highly doubt the average clientele would even question if there was an upcharge, but I had my suspicion as I was placing my order. The "sushi rice or field greens" is one entity; I was asked if I wanted rice or salad, and I replied salad since I needed my daily dose of greens that day. I asked Destiny how long I'd have to wait, and she estimated about 15 minutes while handing me a non-itemized receipt. I told her I wanted an itemized receipt, and she asked me for the non-itemized receipt back so she could toss it. Why not just let me keep it? Anyways, she needed help from who I presume was a manager, and he got the itemized receipt for me. I was waiting in the corner for 10 minutes before Destiny said I could sit at one of the tables. I did just that, and the baseball game on TV kept me entertained. About 5 minutes later, I saw that manager with a takeout bag. He handed it to me and wished me a good day. The poke bowl was a little small for ~$26, but there was a good amount of salmon poke inside, and the taste was good. Not great, especially for the price point, but I felt good about what I was eating. I wish the avocado slices weren't stuck together, but it didn't bother me that much. Overall, not bad. A solid 7 out of 10, but Destiny and the manager appreciated my patronage, so I'm happy to round up to 4 out of 5. Also, in the business response, please don't ask me what can be done to earn that 5th star from me. I've already spelled that out in the review, and there isn't even a Kona Grill where I'm from, so I can't really make a return visit anyhow. read more
