My daughter and I stopped in to check it out on the way back to the hotel. Was originally just looking, but the prices were great and we got lucky that they had availability to do the work within 5 minutes. Once done, they provided a card with how to care for it. The two ladies there at the time were super nice and very accommodating with questions on pricing. Everything has an option for customization, so if you see something you like and are on a budget or would like to go more elaborate, they can do it. For the best experience, make an appointment. If you want to do your own henna at home, they also sell kits. $20 and it comes with everything you need. if you want a specific design you see in their book, just ask them and they will give you a copy to take with you to do at home. So on a whim our entire family got henna tats. She did such a great job on everyone's and the prices were very reasonable. She was very accommodating as there were twelve of us and we didn't have an appointment. She was able to get all of ours done very efficiently. The studio was great. The women there were so nice and fun to chat with while you got your henna done. It's very clean and they have lots of books to look through. I've wanted to get a henna tattoo for years and was pleased to see the ad for this place in one of the tourist mags. I arrived close to the end of business hours and when I saw there were three people ahead of me I thought I was out of luck (since I was leaving the next day). However, Robin, the staff artist was very welcoming and assured me she would have time to do my design. I didn't have to wait very long and I was quite impressed with how friendly and personable she was with every customer she worked on. And, I can only imagine how tired she must've been after working a full day! When it was my turn I showed her the design I selected out of one of the available catalogs and she went right to work. I was enthralled to watch her create the elaborate design on my hand and enjoyed the sensual cool feeling of the ink on my hand as it came to life. All the while, she was friendly and responded to questions and conversation in a genuine way. She truly seems to enjoy her work and it was delightful to be the recipient of her talents. Let me tell you about my amazing experience at Kona Henna Studio... Robin was my artist and I cant thank her enough for being such a special part preparing me for my wedding with her henna artwork. I chose a photo before I arrived and she followed the artwork perfectly. Which I wasn't expecting just a similar rendition but she gave me the perfect copy. I love this place. It's my first time in Hawaii and I saw this when walking around my 2nd night here. I saw what I cute shop this was and knew I wanted to get one. Took long time to convince my mom and dad to let me get it, but it was so worth it. What a great experience. It was quick, conveniently located close to the port, and had a great staff. When I walked in I was greeted very kindly by the manager and her staff. They helped me find the right henna for me at the perfect price. I found the perfect one and has it customized with no problem. It was quick affordable and an amazing experience. In the pictures, you can see I received a henna with a feather featuring 17 flying birds, representing the 17 fellow students (eagles) I lost February 14th to a mass shooting at my high school. The manger helped me no questions asked and was the nicest person I met on the island of Hawaii. They gave great tips and tricks to making it last. I truly enjoyed my experience here and it really made me feel at home in Kona. This henna was worth every cent as it really brought this vacation all together. I've attached to my review screen shots of an email conversation I had with the owner of this henna studio. Let me begin by saying we were in Hawaii for a few weeks and every year my daughter asks for a henna tattoo. This year the timing worked out and we scheduled an appt for her. She ended up getting a lotus flower and her name written down her spine on 1/3. By 1/7, the henna tattoo was nearly gone. We followed every instruction - the henna stayed on longer than recommended, a total of around 14 hours, no sun, no swimming, etc. We stopped by the studio to see if they could fix or touch it up, Bri, the artist, was right in the middle of her appt and couldn't do it at that time. She let us know we should come back and it wouldn't be an issue, since she could barely see the henna herself and she stated that this was not the norm. I sent a message to make a new appt before we left town or get a refund if that wasn't possible and received the most abrasive and rude response. Apparently you can walk in to the studio and they will fix it, but if you send a message and get the owners, they're completely rude and don't want to fix any errors and refuse to provide a refund because it's "art"... even though this was a stenciled and traced piece of "artwork" and one of their employees already stated that they would fix it, no problem. I'd recommend trying another henna studio or saving yourself the money, aggravation and having to deal with rude people that take your money without providing proper service. read more

I was thoroughly disappointed to find my henna which had only been done 3 days prior almost completely gone. I had followed all the instructions in regards to pre past peal and post past peal and yet it still didn't stick. Noticing the henna had almost vanished I returned to the store and asked for a touch up to which the lady responded that it was on an area that fades quickly and had I done it on the bottom of my foot it would have stayed longer (which contradicts the instructs to moisturize to prevent exfoliation as the bottom of your foot gets rubbed the most) and that to get a touch up would cost half of what I payed which was about 40 dollars for a band and turtle. I would not recommend coming here, due to the poor quality of the henna and the misinformation delivered by the workers. read more

Ok, so although it can seem super cheesy, henna tattoos and plumeria flowers in your hair (plastic ones from the ABC store are perfectly acceptable) are standard practice for a tourist in Hawaii. Who am I to screw with the status quo? While vacationing on the big Island, friends and I walked past this place a few times before one of us finally admitted that we wanted a tattoo. At that point it was on. I went for the modest foot tatoo of a bee buzzing around some flowers, (partially my own design) friends went for a turtle design and a tramp stamp. The shop is run by Maria and Robin, both friendly and knowledgeable. Our designs were done free hand and we were in and out of the chair within minutes. The procedure is painless and last about a month if you care for it correctly. For me that meant not washing the top of my foot...I know, too much information but just in case you were wondering. Only 4 stars this time, because I also got a cute little gekco on my shoulder that didn't take, even though I did everything I was directed to do. Kona is a very chill town and if you happen to visit, give these girls a holler...I saw a lot of guys in there too, so it's not only for women. Aloha! read more

The divine smell of eucalyptus oil alone is enough to bring you in off the street to this beautiful studio. The artists here are brilliantly talented. Ask for any design and most of the tiime they apply it freehand. I love how the henna feels and smells. Apparently they use really high quality henna... I liked the idea of Kona Henna because it's an actual establishment that's been in business fora long time. My husband and I walked by Kona Henna a few times and saw the quality of work that Robin was doing. My husband was the first to commit to the idea; he wanted a tribal arm band. After a little hemming and hawing I decided to go for it, too; I decided on an orchid, since we were on the "Orchid Isle." Robin came up with a design even more beautiful than I imagined! Robin and Keelee are knowledgeable and friendly. If you're hesitant, Kona Henna is just the place to make you feel at ease. I've gotten henna tattoos a few times from Kona Henna Studio. The earlier ones were small designs taken from their catalogue of patterns. This week, however, I asked for something more complex -- a large Polynesian-style tattoo covering most of my upper arm. After I referred to a photo on the store web site, Robin did a beautiful job of applying the henna freehand in the spirit of the photograph, but modified somewhat and customized to the shape of my arm. A large custom tattoo takes quite a while to apply, but it was amazing to watch the pattern come to life under Robin's skillful hands. The second interesting part of the process comes a few hours later when the henna paste comes off. At first, the tattoo looks pale orange and rather unimpressive, but it darkens substantially in just a few more hours, and becomes a rich brown after one or two days. (Of course, the details depend on one's skin and the part of the body on which the henna is applied.) Henna creates a perfect tattoo for people who don't want a real one, because it fades after two to four weeks -- the fun of a tattoo without the commitment. I was hesitant to get my first henna tattoo because I had read some horror stories about allergic reactions. It turns out that the bad reactions come from something called "black henna," which is not henna at all. You should never allow anybody to apply black henna to your skin; but Kona Henna Studio uses natural henna, which has a long history of safe use. read more

After waiting patiently with my daughters for the woman doing the henna to complete two people in front of me. I noticed a haole man who walked in after us. He flipped through the books of designs picked one and paid for it. The woman doing the designs had already told me that there was one person in front, and that was the woman she was working on. After she completed the woman, she asked my daughters what designs they wanted, and they told her. My oldest daughter went up into the chair to get her design done. The woman cleaned the area to begin the design and then abruptly stopped. She was then told my daughter that the haole man who walked in after us was going to get his done first. My daughter got down and employee began working on his design. I was flabbergasted. This type of behavior went out in the 50's. By making my daughters wait, they lost not two people, they lost three as I was going to get one done also. We walked out. Horrible customer service. The woman ran after us out of the store...all apologetic. I would never recommend anyone to ever patronize their store, no matter how good they are. Any store which practices this type of business practice during this day and time should not be in business. There are multiple other places to have a henna done in Hawai'i. I would never go back there again. read more

Prices too high. Would not recommend getting a henna here. I spent $70 on a hand henna and a henna kit. The kit was crap and did not work! The girl working said my henna would last three weeks. We both loved how they turned out and I am getting tons of compliments on how beautiful it looks. Mindy is an amazing artist and so sweet! My husband had a lot of questions about what some of the tribal designs meant and she was very knowledgeable. She didn't mind sticking around for about half an hour after they were closed to finish us up. She even put a stencil of a turtle on my 3-year-old son's knee, per his request, so he could match us. Love this place, I wish I lived nearer so I could get one more often! Before you go, think about where are you getting the paste applied. Dress accordingly, you'll need to keep the paste on for at least and half hour and preferably longer. Also, no swimming for 3-4 hours, so plan ahead. read more
