It was a Saturday, I didnt have much to do so I had time and the line indicated that there was deliciousness at the end of the yellow brick road. The tables were painted with various nods to the D9 (BGLO-Black Greek Lettered Organizations)...I felt like I was in an eatery near an HBCU. The music with classic R&B sounds were overhead, you can immediately tell it was a family establishment. I felt so at home!! Ok enough of that-the food..that is what you care about. The food was amazing!!! The ribs were tender and fell off of the bone. The sauce was a mix of sweet and tangy...the chicken was delicious and juicy while still having the smokiness. I am West Indian so I typically do not like American macaroni...but I give it to them. The macaroni was not bad at all. My favorite part-my red velvet cake. I want to now who left their toe clippings in my red velvet!!! The cake slapped me in my mouth!! I'm so sorry that this review is probably the most real you have from me...but the food took me back to my roots so I have to describe it the only way I know how...the cake was EVERYTHING. Fire fire fire fire. Food 9/10 I got the three meat platter it rang in at $17.96. It came with two sides I got the baked beans which where perfect, and the Mac & Cheese which was pretty ok but needed some seasoning. I got the sausage, chicken and ribs, all three where great but the star of the show was the ribs. Perfectly charred, juicy with a little crunch on the outside *mwah, French kiss chefs kiss. Second to the ribs I'd favor the sausage. Service was quick and efficient. It was a pretty busy spot. And the ambiance was homie, it's one of those places you gotta get it, to get it. The staff said every meat selection was great, and I was not disappointed. I ordered the Thin Tip which is similar to rib with less bones. It comes with two sides (Collard greens and rice). They added some special sauce on top of the meat. And it was better than any of the BBQ sauce I had tasted. I will have come back try other selection next time I am in town. Pulling up to this out of the way gem, smoke was pouring out of the smokers off to the side indicating I had arrived at the right place. After figuring out which door to enter (the middle one), I joined the queue of others waiting to place their orders. Initially, the line moved very slowly and people kept pouring in behind me filling the limited space. While efforts were made by management to enforce social distancing, it was almost futile. As it turns out, the backup was due to a couple people putting in orders for what looked like their whole office (another good sign). Once they got taken care of, things moved much more quickly. I got the combo with ribs and pork and it was enough food for almost two meals. The food didn't disappoint and I will definitely be back (please note their limited hours). The one recommendation I will make it to get your sauce on the side as they appeared to be drenching the orders that didn't do that. I got bread pudding and pineapple tea for my personal edification and consumption as I was told it was mandatory to try these two things. I thought that I tasted the tartness off lemon but it may have been just a combination of the sweety tartness of the pineapple. It was a nice combination with the tea. It was delicious! The ribs were awesome! They have a mustard based barbecue sauce that I haven't had before but it was really delicious! The ribs were cooked just right with that charcoaled infused, crispy goodness on the outside and the tender, juicy, succulent rib meat on the inside. Mmmm mmmmm good! I saved the bread pudding for later and when I took my first bite, I just couldn't believe it. It was thick in all the right places. Just like any born and bred Southern woman! ; ) It had that lightly sweety, sugary glaze over the top. It was so good. It reminded me of my grandma! There was plenty of indoor seating including picnic benches and tables with chairs. The order was called in so we didn't wait long . Why 5 stars? Because the wait(s) were long, but oh-so worth it! --- --- --- I've had Konan BBQ on my to-visit list for quite some time. Usually I end up visiting a place pretty quickly when it gives me this level of intrigue, but I kept finding myself letting another week pass without visiting Konan. Recently, I decided to put my foot down and make it happen! I was a little a nervous when their phone number just kept giving me a busy signal, but I made the trek down to Hubert Ave anyway. If you haven't veered too far off of Lois Ave when heading to/from International Mall, you might be surprised at the neighborhood that lies within. I've definitely been in neighborhoods that were in worse shape, but this one is a little eye-opening, considering you're just about a mile and a half from a Louis Vuitton store. The parking lot is not very large, so I actually drove around the block and waited for someone to leave from one of the handful of spots that was available. Once inside, the menu was pretty simple - a few meats, a few sides, a couple desserts and a couple drinks. I asked what their specialty was in terms of meats and the guy closed his eyes and started air-pointing, as if to say, "all of the above." I opted for ribs, pulled pork, coleslaw, mac-n-cheese and sweet pineapple tea. I then headed into the dining room and waited for about 20-25 minutes. I was not alone - there were quite a few people who were also waiting quite a while for their food. As much as I was excited to eat, I was willing to wait because I knew that my food wasn't prepared until I ordered it. Eventually my order was called and I headed home. About 15 minutes later, I opened my box-o-goodness and I could not have been happier. I'll sum it up with this comment: This is some of the best BBQ in all of Tampa Bay. Ribs - Some of the best I've had anywhere. They were that perfect middle ground between fall-off-the-bone and chewy. Chopped Pork - Very solid and the perfect compliment to the ribs. Coleslaw - A bit watery, but absolutely delicious! Mac-n-Cheese - Seriously some of the tastiest and cheesiest mac I have ever had. And I order mac every time it's on a menu. Sweet Pineapple Tea - VERY sweet, but definitely worth ordering! And this is coming from a person who doesn't like overly-sweet drinks. My one and only gripe is that I wish I had more sauce - especially with the chopped pork. After getting through the initial top layer, the meat was pretty dry. Unfortunately the Mac didn't do it for me but the ribs and the sauce were very good. It was pretty busy when I went so I assume this a well respected bbq place. As a certified KCBS BBQ judge, I make it my business to stop in for BBQ every time I travel. My work trip to Tampa was no exception. Konan's was close to my office and got the sampling platter of all the meats. When I told the owner/pitmaster that I was a judge, he took me out back to take a look at their smoker. Wow, tons of real wood, heavy aromas, and lots of bark and char on all of their Q. They smother their meats and a mustard based sauce that compliments their cooking style. He said I asked so many questions he wondered if I was spying for the competition. He made sure everyone else who came in after us knew that my friend and I were first in line. The staff were all friendly and jovial, just enjoying what they do! To my disappointment, bread pudding is not made on the weekend but Mr. Eric found two from the day before just for us. I tried the sausage sandwich and the pineapple tea, also made of crack!! I went back for a side of Trigg rice.....DELICIOUS!! And collared greens .....also delicious! And Mac n cheese.... delicious! My friend has bbq chicken and found that also delicious. I asked for a second serving of the addictive pineapple tea because it was sooooo good!!! While the portions were huge and the price is right, I wasn't drooling over this bbq and I won't have the craving to go back. The sausage and mac & cheese were the stars of the show for me and both tasted really great. The ribs & chicken on the other hand, were just okay and the pork disappointed me.
