My family and I are regulars to Kona's. At least once a week during the summer we grab a sandwich, chips and a drink from Dave and his incredible staff and head over to 1 Mile for a swim and picnic. My favorites are the vegetarian plus avocado and bacon. They're always very accommodating with special orders. I have yet to have a less than perfect sandwich at Kona's Dave and staff take great pride what they do. Since we usually have our dog with us I stay in the car. Not only was a sandwich not that great, the bread was incredibly dry. But what I'm assuming is the owner or the manager was extremely rude to his employees. I went to get a sandwich for the first time, and it seemed like maybe a new girl was getting trained, the older gentleman in a gray polo was extremely rude to her. So rude that it made me and my friend uncomfortable. Correcting every little move she made, including how to get a bag of chips. As I was repeating my phone number to get started for rewards account he decided it was a good time to also repeat my phone number to her as if she wasn't understanding it enough coming from me. At least for the sourdough the sandwich was like 2/3 bread so it was a little dry and was kind of most of the taste. I assure you, all of this happened. I would give you more stars if the experience wasn't so unpleasant: I had an incredibly disappointing experience here. One of the workers was shouting "Ozempic" at my partner and me from across the diner, which was completely inappropriate and uncalled for. I might have let that slide if the food had been decent, but the sandwich I ordered was an absolute disaster--dry, flavorless, and so bad I couldn't even finish it. The customer service was equally terrible, and it seemed like they had some kind of issue with "bigger" people. It's ironic and absurd behavior for a place that's in the business of selling food. He's very extroverted, cares about his customers and his workers. First time I came, I think someone was new on the job and the boss was helping him out teaching him the works. I had a fantastic experience eating here today! I'm visiting my brother for his graduation and we decided to come here to grab lunch. Right off the bat the workers were welcoming, kind and helpful with helping us choose our meal! They recommended the tri tip and the pesto pasta salad and it was an incredible meal. The worker who helped us was named Liam. I hope the owner sees this and gives him praise. DRY, CRUMBLY BREAD. WOW, came here for the first time a couple days ago in a while and have things changed. I wished I had read the reviews before revisiting about how the bread is so crumbly. Nowhere in the store does it state that their "newer 2 year" bakery makes insanely dry, dense, crumbly sourdough bread. Maybe I should have gotten it toasted and it wouldn't have been so bad? Who knows but it was so bad to the point where I was picking of pieces of the thick bread and that wasn't even enough. Literally ended up eating the little bit of meat and toppings inside the sandwich to not deal with the bread anymore. It literally seemed like it was a couple days old. Yes the price is good but I rather spend more for more quality sandwiches. Dave seems like such a nice person it's crazy he would sell this kind of bread to paying customers. Quality control much? After reading so many reviews regarding the bread issues, you would think that it would be time to find a new bakery. What was great was the service. They were super friendly and on point. Unfortunately, the sandwiches were just bland. I don't know how one can make a sandwich taste like nothing, but they accomplished it. Both my wife and I just pretended we could not eat them all and took the second half home in the bags and tossed them when we got there. I have one word. WOW Came to Kona's while dropping my daughter off to Chico State. We ordered their two most popular sandwiches. These puppies are big, very tasty, and absolutely filling. I can't believe I only paid $11 per sandwich. The sandwiches are like submarine style sandwiches. I think it was about 20" long and stuffed with everything you can imagine. Now, compare that to a subway sandwich. If I gave subway a 5/10, Kona's would be a 10/10. A completely different playing field and in my opinion, blows others away easily. I don't want to go into detail on just the two sandwiches we devoured since their menu is extensive and not to mention, their specials were very good. Staff and owner are extremely friendly. They seem to know many customers by first name. My plan is to visit my daughter and to continue to support Kona's The place is very nice. There are many tables both tall and small. So we ordered sandwiches from Kona's on Nord for an event on campus and we got more rave reviews from our students than any place we've ever ordered from, Kona's on Nord kudos to you for giving us excellent service excellent food and that tri-tip sandwich was to die for! The only problem we didn't order enough vegetarian sandwiches for our students so next time we will but I learned my lesson. The sandwiches were amazing even without the turkey thank you. I've always heard about this place so I thought I would try it. Yeah it's. I ordered a turkey sub and the macaroni and cheese. The macaroni and cheese was very dry and you couldn't even taste or see any cheese sauce and it was a very small size for the money it cost. The sourdough bread on my sandwich was so tough I couldn't even bite it off and chew it! as if it had been microwaved, I had to throw most of the bread away, so disappointing. Walked in on a rainy day and was hit with sunshine and good vibes. This places rocks! Anthony helped me with my order, was super personable and welcoming and the owner was hilarious and generous with a sample of their yummy house tea. They feature fresh breads, homemade cookies, local products, fresh veggies, homemade soups that look bomb (coming back to try that broccoli chedder) and had the feel of a local spot with alot of heart. I walked in around 1pm today and there were 11 customers that followed behind me within 5 minutes. This was my first time having lunch here but upon moving to Chico I was given the head's up that this place is a "staple" in the community. I was standing there, blankly staring at the menu when I was told about the Applewood Smoked Tri-Tip they had available. The gentleman recommended what usually goes best on the sandwhich and asked if I was interested. He also told me about the Aloha Special which was a Chicken sandwhich that they had as an amazing option as well. I told him I'll have both! He then re-assured the long line of customers behind me that they would be helped quickly and every single one of them stayed in line, which honestly says alot about an establishment. I'm writing this as a response to the owner as yelp does not let me respond to my original review. 1. Yes, on Doordash the description for the sourdough bread says it is firm and slightly dense but it is VERY dense, very dry, heavy, and crumbled to pieces. 2. On my special instructions i wrote (which i can see that i wrote because I can see my past orders on the app): "extra mayo please. extra on the toppings." (notice how i put both phrases on 2 separate lines like I did when I ordered) I did NOT write "extra mayo on the toppings." but yet received zero mayo on my sandwich which i did submit pictures of that to doordash and brings me to my next point. 4. In regards to the refund from DD, because i submitted the pictures to them that there was absolutely zero mayonnaise on my sandwich & extremely minimal toppings, they did give me a $3.99 credit. Do i consider that a refund? Not really as I spent over $17 on the sandwich which was a huge disappointment. read more

Dave went above and beyond making our DoorDash experience. He gave me a call after submitting my family's order and gave us some great recommendations on the sandwiches we chose so we wouldn't be disappointed. One of us requested to have a sandwich microwaved and he offered to grill it instead because microwaving would just make the bread hard and chewy by the time it got delivered. He also gave us several different soup options instead of the just "one" soup of the day option doordash offers. This was one of my favorite neighborhood delis when I had lived in Chico. My college dormitory and two of my rental homes were within a few blocks of the location and I found myself coming here often. Unlike other local delis, the pricing here is really good. I recall only paying a few dollars for a great sandwich. As a broke student, this was a selling point for me. The deli is on busy Nord Ave in an older strip mall. There is parking right out front though I would always walk or bike here from my home or campus. There were usually only one or two staff working at a time, but the customer service has always been great. I was a big fan of their turkey sandwich on wheat. Others have mentioned that their sandwich came with a free "salad" and I can certainly attest to this! The sandwich was positively loaded with greens, and it was fun to consume the shredded lettuce and tomato that would spill out as I downed my sandwich. I hope to stop by the next time I'm in Chico and have the opportunity to relive my undergrad days at this familiar spot! read more

First time trying Kona's today, have lived in Chico for a long time but have been missing out on this gem, it's a locally owned business. I called in an order, had a sandwich in mind but the gentleman that took my call sold me on their special of the day, I took his recommendation and had their Angry bird sandwich, he was welcoming on the phone and high energy, you could tell he enjoys what he does. I arrived at their storefront and the general feel of the place was very welcoming, I met the owner, Dave and he has created a wonderful culture with his team, they were all happy to be there, Anthony was in the process of training a new employee, I was very impressed with how he was coaching the new team member, now to the food, my sandwich exceeded my expectations, highly recommend this locally owned business, give them a try if you have not. We had read the review in CN&R about the clam chowder in a bread bowl so of course we had to try it. You order at the counter-very nice crew and then sat down at one of the tables and waited for our soup. The service was great but the soup was served in a cold-out of the bag sourdough bread bowl! The clam chowder was ok but never tasted any clams. I think if the "bowl" was hot and crispy it would have been delicious. We did then try the Mac n cheese and it was pretty good. I came here for the first time the other night, im a vegetarian and ordered the veggie special. My husband ordered the tri tip sandwich. I wasnt a huge fan on the lady who was making my sandwich putting meat on my husbands then without washing her hands putting veggies on mine. I was a little scared of the cross contamination. Also i found it very odd that they dont use gloves to make peoples sandwiches. Is it just a pray the worker washed their hands kind of deal? Both of our sandwiches tasted good tho. read more
