If I could give a ZERO rating, that's what I'd give. A mechanic who takes advantage of people who don't know much about motorcycles. BEWARE! I took my Honda Navi which is a VERY cheap bike in for an oil change, brake service, and a rear tire replacement. He charged me 112 for the new parts (?). That part was fine. Until he charged me 350 just for labor. The problem is, I'd had the same work done by him before, and he'd only charged me 150 (labor) dollars (without the tire change). In the end, I spent 483 dollars almost a quarter of the bike's value. When I asked him to explain the work done, he didn't know what to say and told me he did exactly what Honda required. I found tire replacements at Honda for $50. He charged me $95 for the new tire plus $95 for the installation, after having already charged me $255 (for labor) for brake adjustments and an oil change. Please, for your own sake, don't take your bikes to this place. This guy is an opportunist! I hope everything you do comes back to you. A terrible human being!!!! read more

I was a little disappointed today at Kon Tiki. When it was time to pay my bill the labor charge of $56.25 was higher than my quote of $45.00. I pointed this out to Alex expecting an adjustment but instead I was told by Alex, "I will make it up to you when you bring me your other bikes". KonTiki motorcycle shop has an old school feel and business model. Be professional, do good work and provide excellent customer service. I brought my KTM in for clutch work and met with Alex who's dad started the shop in 1965. I let Alex know I was going to miss a dualsport ride with my buddies if it couldn't be repaired in time. Alex acknowledged my request and sent me somewhere else to get the parts to improve my chances of getting my bike back in time. I have a 1976 Honda CB750. Being as old as it is, there is the mandatory maintenance. I keep up with the little stuff regularly as a labor of love. My knowledge only goes so far, and so when my bike started acting up I took way more time trying to diagnose the issues myself than I should have. If I had taken this to Kon-Tiki earlier I would have saved myself a lot of time and frustration. I highly recommended these guys! I had a bad experience when I took my bike in for a tune up. After having them service it, I was having trouble with starting. I checked it out back at home, and noticed they FORGOT TO TIGHTEN DOWN THE BATTERY. In other words, they are negligent and careless. When you walk in, this place looks like someone's home garage. It doesn't have the professional atmosphere as some other big name chains like House of Motorcycles (oddly, they recommended me to Kontiki) but Kontiki motorcycles has a very knowledgeable and friendly crew. From the second I walked up to the shop, the mechanic started chatting it up with me like we were old pals. Often times this sort of behavior makes me uncomfortable, but for some reason these guys seemed more genuine. All in all, the grittiness and down to earth staff made my bike maintenance an enjoyable experience. Prices are fair and the work seems good. I've only been there once, but will surely be back for any maintenance needs in the future. FYI, they are often backed up with bikes to work on (which is a good sign to me) so don't always expect to get your bike out same day...or even same week, at times. read more

I had a 21" touring wheel and I needed a tire mounted. I called 9 different places that quoted me from $35-55 to simply put a tire on a rim. Kontiki quoted me $25 so I went there. Alex is super nice and had my tire mounted and balanced within a couple hours. Guess who gets my motorcycle business again. read more

My initial impressions were not good. You walk in to practically an empty store full of vintage motorcycle stuff. It looks like your uncle's garage. To be honest, the first time I walked in and waited for service...I never got any. I left in a heartbeat. However, because I live in PB, I wanted to give it another try. I called in for a quick service on my bike was able to drop it off that day and get it back the same day. Not only did they have a fairly quick turn around time, but afterwards he gave me some good tips as a new bike owner and ways to keep it running top notch. This is a good little shop. They had to order the part for my bike, which took a couple days to come in, but otherwise these guys were really fast and friendly with everything. They called me when the part finally came in, I dropped off my bike, and an hour later they were calling me back again to say the bike was ready to pick-up. It's been running strong ever since. The last time I took one of my bikes in, they broke the plastics pieces that cover the headset and claimed they were already broken (note: I know the pieces were fine because I had recently removed them and put them back on with no problem when changing the headlight bulb). I'm guessing that they either cross-threaded or over-tightened them and basically ruined both pieces. It seems like a fine place to go if you have an older bike that needs mechanical attention but I wouldn't recommend bringing a newer bike here. Big disappointment. Update: I took the bike somewhere else to get new tires and they noted that the oil level was too low and the battery needed to be replaced. Sloppy and lazy. I think I'll revise my recommendation to avoid Kontiki all together...new bike or old. read more

I rarely write reviews because I'm too damn busy most of the time, but my recent experience at Kon Tiki inspired me to find my ancient login and passwork to yelp and let people know about this awesome business. I have no idea where the few low reviews are coming from. I took my DL650 VStrom in for a chain cleaning and lube and the guys had me in and out in 40 minutes. I just walked down the street, grabbed a coffee and checked email on my phone-how many other motorcycle places can you do that? Not only that, but the owner, Alex, took the time to walk me through my bike and introduce me to the San Diego dualsport scene-where to find rides, online local resources, that sort of thing. Next up, I needed a back tire replacement. Dropped the bike off at 3, was done by 4:30. The guys that work there and the owner are true motorcyclists and really care about the work that they put into the bikes. No pretension, no fluff and no b.s. Just honest work and great value. These guys are great! I had a flat on my only form of transportation the Saturday of 4th of July weekend and these guys stayed open late to replace my tube. They noticed and fixed a couple minor things like a detached spring on my rear brake pedal, which is exceptionally thorough before a long weekend. Continuing to struggle with these guys and honestly, I have never experienced anything like it, nor has my insurance agent. Continual promises for an estimate to be sent in, claims it has, then more issues. It's almost as if they aren't interested in getting paid or receiving business. Well over a month and still no estimate to my insurance company....at this point considering legal action if they refuse to pay a tow to another bike shop. If you have your old Classic Bike and don't care about the turnaround fine, but if you want insurance work performed by these guys, I hope you don't mind waiting months to resolve the claim. read more

Alex was awesome! I had a clutch cable issue I just COULDN'T figure out and Alex had me fixed and out of there in about 3 minutes. The fix was awesome but the people and customer service is what impressed me. Tale of two shops today: Went to DMC after I called and they told me to come in. Wanted me to leave my bike all day an no promises that they could work on it. I asked if they could just look at it real quick and see if it is a quick fix or bigger issues. No sorry we don't do that. Can we just look it over so I have an idea of what is wrong. Nope, just leave it here and we'll call you sometime. Well it's my only ride can we just check it real quick. Nope. You probably need a new clutch or your synthetic oil messed it up. Okay well I have to take the bike then because I have appointments I have to get to. Bye. They DID NOT care at all. Called Kontiki after. Yeah come on in. Once I got there I was warmly greeted and told to bring the bike to the back. Let's have a look at it. Alex asked some questions, looked it over, and loosened a bolt that got me safely riding again. Was it a big fix, no. But based on how I was treated at each shop Kontiki has my business for good as well as referrals from my bike buddies. I'll never step foot in DMC again. Called late today since I needed an oil change with all the works and Alex and Mike hooked me up. They not only got me in within the hour, but were done in record time and made sure to look over the bike too without trying to sell me anything extra. As a new rider it's always nice to get someone to take a quick look at the condition of your bike so you can keep yourself safe. My only complaint is that I had to grab cash out of the ATM since their card reader wasn't functioning. Other than that, I will be returning for all of my maintenance requirements. read more
