Growing up with a southern father , my dad and grandparents use to throw down in the kitchen so this is the closest soul food outside my kitchen. I am a frequent client of kook'n with Kim and I usually get the meatloaf dinner or the smothered pork chops because they are my favorite . Today I got the meatloaf dinner ( comes with 2 sides ) , the fried chicken lunch for my honey and a rib dinner with two sides and a banana pudding to go. The Meatloaf alone is 5 stars. Love love Ms. Kim's meatloaf - Its savory seasoned well and oh so tender. I am not sure if she adds pork in the meat mix but it is delicious and tender soft. The gravy that comes with it is delicious. The bread pudding is also one of the best you will have from a scratch kitchen. I have seen caucasians come here and grab food because I hear them say its the best meatloaf they had - to the cooking in general reminds them of their southern family member cooking. This day the black eyed peas was a popular side choice. I never tried it but it was a popular one. I spoke to Ms. Kim and her grandson this day just to have a conversation - Ms. Kim introduced herself to me with her First Name - She asked me if I was this ethnicity and she was right LOL she then stated to me she is part Thailand. Her grandson was also nice. I was sharing to him my past experience as a Yelp Diner at this establishment and both Ms. Kim and her grandson were not fond of the experience I had and then Ms. Kim adviced next time that happens at any food establishment to just get a full refund back. They were shocked of the experience I had. It was a pleasure talking to them both them hearing me vent it out about my dining experience from another establishment. On a weekday around close to 12pm this place can get a line for food. By far Ms. Kim's place is the best soul food IMO in Orlando and the portions are hefty! This was my first time trying this place, and it definitely lived up to the hype. I saw reviews saying the line is usually out the door, and now I totally get why. The food was so good, the portions were huge, and I ended up eating my meal over four different sittings! I ordered a variety of food so I could take it home and enjoy a few meals. The yams are simply divine, buttery and sweet. The turkey dressing was so satisfying! The turkey wing was served with rice and was ladled with gravy. So delicious and tender! The ribs honestly could stand alone with out any sauce. The house smoked ribs have so much love and knowledge in each bite. The mac and cheese sells out, so be prepared to get in line early. The potato salad was tasty. Stopped in for lunch, my experience was ok. The guy serving was preoccupied on his phone while serving yea that could have been handled better. cashier had no customer service at all no smile, no welcome, just standing there. Food portion was a bit too large for me because I just wanted a little bite for lunch, that was more a dinner plate than lunch. Then no substitution when I'm willing to pay to substitute makes no sense cuz I didn't want rice. Cornbread was dry, chicken tastes cheap, potato salad was too much and watery. The spot is small and a local black business in the historic Eatonville (oldest all Black town in the US) Happy Black history Month. As soon as I parked my car on the side I smelled the food cooking on the grill. Took me back to how the streets in NYC smell. I waited in line for about 6mins but it was so worth it. Vibes- I'm all about the vibes and this place has good energy. You can tell this place is respected in the community by how friendly and warm the customer and service interactions were. For the short time I felt like we were all family waiting in line at Thanksgiving. When I got to the food Ms. Kim piled the food in those trays. For $20 I got all this food. Honestly I was having a crappy day and like most women I thought a good meal or snack would help. So when I got in my car I took a few bites and Oh M G! (You know that scene in Ratatouille, when the food took him to his childhood) Yes all that. Side note- everyone knew my mom as Ms. Kim (Rest in peace) so I did almost cry. It was like my mom made the food herself. Attitude left my body so fast. I took the rest of the food home to my family and my daughter thought I went to my parent's house and brought home a plate she said the Mac and cheese taste just like the one my step mom makes for Thanksgiving. The chicken was fresh, juicy and you can taste the grill in it. The sauce had a little sweetness to it and the greens were old school with the fatback. I heard about this restaurant a couple years ago and have passed by it countless times. I finally decided to stop in. I ordered the veggie plate that consisted of three sides of your choice. Such awesome true soul food. Whopping portion sizes are given @ Kook'n with Kim. I got the turkey lunch which came with turkey over yellow rice and a side of black eyed peas. You can see from my pictures how huge the portions are. The food is very flavorful and truly soulful soul food. The Mac and cheese was my favorite. The banana pudding is pretty delicious also. Parking is limited and if you come on a Sunday during lunch hours like I did then expect to be parking on the sides of the street. The service is top tier, this establishment is ran by pure professionals. Kook'n with Kim appeared to be a major hit with the community during my visit as the line went well out the door to the street. They've got a good thang going on here! We were looking for soul food, on a Saturday afternoon and Yelp led me here. I hadn't read the reviews, just saw the pics and decided we were going! Glad we did. They're a no frills kinda joint and I'm ok with that! Walk in, order, take ya food and go! With a buffet style line to see the offerings, there were hidden goodies that weren't on the line though in the kitchen. We ordered the fried pork chops. Sides were yams, rice, & corn. The pork chops were straight out the grease in my plate. Everything was delicious and a decent price point. The yams needed more sugar or something. But I would definitely come back here. OMG!! So much food! I stopped at Kook'n with Kim and picked up fried chicken lunches for me and a coworker. When we opened them back at work I was calling everyone over to look at the portions. It was like you were taking a plate home from a family gathering and your aunt piled on enough for everybody at your house. The greens were perfect, good cornbread ( and I'm picky about cornbread) and the chicken was lightly breaded. The yellow rice was a little dry but I'll forgive them that. Was craving some good soul food on a Sunday, and didn't feel like cooking this place is always packed and has a line out the door Kook'n with Kim in Eatonville, FL, i had a great experience overall. I ordered the oxtail, which was delicious, though not as tender as I had hoped. The portion size was than enough, well enough for two to share. The wait time was about 45 minutes, but it was worth it for the flavorful food. The highlight was the pineapple cake, which was absolutely delicious. For two plates and two cakes, the total came to $65. It's honestly been on my list for awhile now and I just didn't make the time. Now it is added into the rotation as a local staple! Fried chicken just like grammaw used to make! seasoned and fried to protection, i only wish they had regular chicken wings also. The mac n cheese was tasty as well but i think maybe a certain type of cheese may be used that i don't fully care for, the consistency and seasoning of it was good though. The greens and rice weren't really my cup of tea flavor wise but the cornbread was good. They are also very generous with the proportions and give you a lot of food for the price. I am soooo happy I came across this place on FB. I saw that their Thursday dinner special was hog maw and I'm from the north so finding hog maw is very challenging. Needless to say, it's been 20 years since I last had them and this place did not disappoint. I got the hog maw with two sides (dressing and collards) and everything was amazing. The flavors were there. The portion sizes?! Enough for three meals honestly. Well worth the price.
