Ordered delivery during this COVID-19 pandemic and most of the dishes were very tasty. Notable items were the Hainan chicken, pearl noodles, curry young tofu, and the satay beef. I especially like the chicken because it was cooked perfectly and had good flavors. The pearl noodles were also really good flavor and liked the al dente noodles. I liked this place fairly well. I usually order the curry mee with whatever the restaurant dictates on the menu (in this case it was the yong tau fu). It was pretty good and I liked the assortment that came with the noodles. It did seem a bit bigger in size compared to Nyonya's. The curry isn't as sweet/coconutty as Nyonya's version but they're each individually just as delicious. Their chow kueh teow is also spicier than any other place that I've tried, which could be a good thing if you like that. All in all, glad to have an additional Malaysian option in the area. read more

We had Roti Canai for the appetizer, yum, Chicken Curry with coconut rice and Indian meegoreng. All delicious! The only other malaysian restaurant I have eaten at is Jaya in Chinatown. Different place from "Kookoo Cafe!" Also, cash only. Came here with a friend for late lunch on Friday. It wasn't crowded but enough people were sitting around where it wasn't completely dead. There's good amount of seatings inside, can probably accommodate up to 6 people at max. I briefly looked through the menu and it seems like they serve Malaysian food with a sprinkle of Cantonese style dishes. We went with the classics, which included the roti canai ($3.95), half a Hainanese chicken ($12) with flavor rice ($1.25) and the curry chicken with rice ($7.75). While waiting, we sipped on some hot tea, getting our bellies warmed up for the meal. The main dishes came first and the appetizer that we ordered, roti canai, came last. Not a biggie. I particularly enjoyed the side sauces and sliced jalapeños/green peppers that come in their small metal bowls where you use the little spoons to scoop'em up in a separate dish. They add a great flavor and kick to your meal so do try them out! In regards to the roti canai, I think the roti could've been a bit thinner and crisper on the edges. Maybe this is a preference thing but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Also, the soy sauce that comes with the Hainanese chicken is bomb dot com. Take a scoop and mix it with your rice and you'll find yourself with a clean plate, humming and drumming on your full belleh. I think the highlight was the curry chicken for me. The meat just falls off the bone and like the soy sauce that comes with the Hainanese chicken, you won't even realize that you're licking the curry off your fingers. It's also amazing mixed with rice, of course and it doesn't hurt that they throw in some big potato slices in there with the curry. Yummmm. Overall, all three of the dishes we ordered were delicious, affordable and came in generous portions. This definitely satisfied my Malaysian cravings and I'm curious to try out some of their other dishes next time, including some drinks. Service was great, we weren't rushed to order food or pay afterwards, which is always a plus in my books cause you know how annoying it is seeing a server walk back and forth giving you obvious "are-you-done-yet" looks while you're trying to eat and converse at the same time. Also in case you're wondering, street parking is available. As for the restaurant itself, I'll definitely stop by the next time I'm around the area and is in need for some Malaysian food. Stopped by here yday to grab lunch to go. My sis's friend had recommended this place and said this is his new go to spot for malaysian from now on. We ordered the indian pancakes (roti canai-comes w curry chicken to dip), prawn mee noodle soup (my fav), seafood fried noodles, and haianese chicken w rice. When i got home i notice the person who packed my order did not give any utensils or napkins.. not even a receipt. These things are important when it comes to take out orders! I hope they will learn to remember that~ My mom said her seafood fried noodles were good in taste and portion was just right leaving her satisfied, not overly stuffed. My prawn mee were a tad bit on the spicier side, never actually tasted spiciness in this noodle soup before from any other malaysian restuarant so i was a tad bit surprised. The noodles were kind of overcooked cos they broke apart easily. But other than that, it was prepared w a good amt of ingredients such as veggies, cuttlefish, shrimp. My son enjoyed the haianese chicken order BUT did complain abt the small pcs of bones here and there that interrupted his meal. Not sure if the chicken was chopped correctly but small pcs of bones usually appear when the chicken isnt chopped correctly causing the bones to break into small little pcs.. this part needs improvement As for the roti canai, it was good but we only received 1 order so i later had to call to let them know i did not receive my 2nd order. This part was handled professionally without a problem. My bf ended up going to pick up the 2nd order. Overall, i will probably be back to try more things. The staff were very professional and pleasant during in person and on the phone which is why i would still give them another chance. Came here for dinner tonight and everything was spot on! Roti was fresh and crispy, the curry chicken was the right amount of spicy and the okra shrimp dish was delishhhhhh! Super glad this placed opened on 86th and beats Nyonya and PappaRich in terms of taste, decor and especially service! Will be returning :) read more

As of January '23: Under spiced, overpriced and out of touch. Not sure if they recently changed chefs or ownership, but none of the qualities mentioned in the many good reviews are evident. Roti Canai, a standard bearer in any Malaysian restaurant, was watery and bland here. The pancake was undercooked, more like a greasy rag than anything else. Singapore noodles, another crowd pleaser, is pretty much like what you'd get at any Chinese hole-in-the-wall takeout, except blander, smaller and twice as expensive. The small serving would be an issue if I had actually wanted to eat it. As it was, the three tiny, overcooked shrimp and smattering of pork shreds were not enough to give the rice noodles any character, so I left most of it uneaten. Service is indifferent - tea served in a paper cup, utensils and a few rough paper napkins tossed on the table. The waiter did not check on me at any point, nor ask how the food was, despite the fact that I left most of it. Altogether my inadequate lunch cost $24 with tip, and would have been expensive at half that price. Avoid. read more

The food is decent, but the service heavily detracts from the rating of this place. The service is by far the worst I have experienced at any restaurant. From the moment we sat down to when we left. Two minutes after being seating, my husband and I were talking to the two friends we were meeting up with and immediately asked if we are ready to order. We said we needed a few minutes for we had not read the menu yet. We return to chatting because we had not seen these friends for several months. The waiter returns in about a minute to ask again. Feeling pressured, we quickly ordered without perusing the menu. We had been there for about 45-50 minutes from seating time when an employee tells us that they have a reservation in ten minutes, asking us to leave. We were rushed to order and rushed to leave. By the time we were leaving there were other tables emptying as well. It was not a busy night at all; didn't see the need to hurry our table. Horrible treatment of customers. If you want to eat here, don't expect to be allowed time to socialize at all. Not that great but it satisfies my hunger. Came here with my friend because we wanted to try a different Malaysian place. This was a bit of a walk from the station and was really empty when we went in. The restaurant looks nice on the inside and so does the food but I didn't really like it and it gave my friend a stomachache. Their famous roti tissue was basically a cone with a crispy wafer-like texture coated with domino sugary that breaks off by itself at the slightest touch. I'm not Malay but I know that's not roti. Overall, the service was pretty good even though the food wasn't plus the environment was nice so I give it 3 stars. read more

So on the way home, we decided to stop in Brooklyn to get some Malaysian food at an interestingly named place: Koo Koo Chicken. I didn't know what to expect, so enough with the intro, onto the review. Atmosphere: This was a very small chic & minimalist modern decor. In front of me, there was an exposed brick wall followed by large floor to ceiling windows, which let in lots of natural light on the left and front of the place. Behind me, I believe the wall had a mural or some kind of painting. Sorry i didn't really pay attention to it. The ceiling housed many LED recessed lighting units which will provide enough lighting in the evening. The tables appear to be a white granite that was similar to a Marble look. These tables have a very sturdy design, so no wobbly tables like many Asian restaurants have. Although the place can fit about 26-30 patrons, it felt very small because we all tables are very close to the neighboring table. Waitstaff: Well, what can i say. This was a busy dinner rush, so I will leave it at that. They weren't rude or anything, but they definitely were rushing to and from tables the whole time we were there. If we needed something, we had to get their attention instead of them coming over to see if we needed anything. This is typical of majority of Chinese run restaurants. I'm used it. One note, when they brought out the Curry Mee with Young Tofu, they also brought a smal bowl and spoon for sharing. But why was the bowl dirty? It was very odd, so we had to 'flag' down a waiter and ask to change the bowl. Food: Appetizer: Satay Beef - The beef was very tender. The flavor was light. I felt it needed some seasoning. I know they gave us a peanut sauce for dipping, but it should have a char-grilled taste or at least a bit of salt. Other that, the meat was of good quality. We also had the Roti Canai - This was pretty good. doughy and crispy in the right places. Dipping it into the chicken curry was better. I wish they gave more curry. Normally, I don't run out of the curry sauce with this appetizer, but they didn't give that much as other Malaysian places do. Entrée: At every Malaysian restaurant, i normally order a Prawn Mee for an entree. So, the issue was they forgot I ordered it. We had to flag down a waiter and remind them of the missing order. it came out as we finished dinner. So in the spirit, i had to at least taste it to provide an accurate account of a freshly made dish. Unfortunately, the soup was 'watered' down. I felt it was missing that strong prawn/shrimp paste. It reminded me of Hong Kong 'soapy' water style soup. Not that it tasted like soap, it was just too muted. Its possible the soup was freshly made and did not have enough time to simmer out the flavors. I'll explain later. The shrimp was fresh and had a good snap when i bit into one. The veggies were delicious as well as everything else in the bowl. I took the remaining food home. At home I heated it up in a pot. Let it simmer for a bit. This helped the soup develop a bit more of that prawn/shrimp paste flavor. An improvement in the flavor from earlier that day. We also had a Curry Mee with young Tofu. This was ok. The soup was a curry base with Coconut milk. The homemade fish cake was a bit on the firm side. I didn't mind it much but my companion wasn't keen on it. Drink: I also had a Malaysian iced coffee. I wasn't sure what about it was off. Either it was not made fresh or it was from a powder or it was too much condensed Milk. It didn't have that robust coffee flavor that I was expecting. Price: Here is some good news. Pricing was actually very decent. The two noodle dishes were approximately $7.95 each. So could that be the correlation of price over flavor? I certainly hope this is not the case. Overall: Well, overall,I was disappointed with the meal. I'm all about the robust flavors from food and thus why i eat at so many ethnic places. The thing they have going for them, is they use quality and fresh ingredients. We have now stopped in for both lunch and dinner enough times to warrant a review. Their service is spotty, they cater to customers who are regulars and don't really pay much attention or are gracious to new customers. Even when you pay the bill and leave they rarely say thank you. Regarding the food - the wine chicken is so so good. If you like wine in your food that is (rice wine). I've also had the seafood scrambled egg chow fun, hainanese chicken, curry chicken, and more. It's definitely a neighborhood eatery and they do well with the folks who dine here over and over. I don't mind the spotty service but it's always nice to have manners with your customers in my opinion whether it be greeting them or thanking them. I have ordered from here a lot and lately have been disappointed in the amount of meat/veggie vs. rice! The best thing to get here is the roti canai and stir fried pearl noodle. The lunch specials are mostly a whole bowl of rice and a little meat/veggies. The chicken and Chinese broccoli was fine, the shrimp and mango too sweet, the okra was good and the Haianese chicken is good, but also lately has mostly been a giant bowl of rice and a small amount of chicken (ordered twice from them this week!). Great roti and loved the mixed beef and chicken satay. Excellent service! However, the main dishes was good, at best. #31- Rice noodle with chicken and shrimp tasted very mild, almost flavorless. The soup needed more flavor- throw in some ginger, five spice, or chicken broth!!! The Hainanese chicken with rice was another sad dish. Loads of rice to fill you up, but just a few piece of flavorless chicken. No original chicken flavor, you have to add your own seasoning from the sauces on the table. At least chill the cucumbers and infuse some vinegar in it for better taste. read more

So this is my first mother's day dinner. I understand that the place is tight, we went in with a stroller and our 5 Months old, the waiter arranged a sharing table with no where to put our baby car seat while there was a table for 4. Apparently they appreciate a 4-ppl business more than us hence they wanted us to squeeze in and don't care if it fit our baby car seat. The sharing table could also fit 4, they could have let us sit on the other table that allowed space for the stroller. I never tried their food but it's just awful that they are so not baby friendly. The Hainanese chicken rice and coconut rice were delicious. I should know, I am from Hainan and have had Hainanese chicken rice all my life. Basically born with a bowl of Hainanese chicken rice in my tiny little hands. The rice is slightly different from what I grew up eating but still very good and when you combine the two types of rice...game changer.
