The food was pretty good but honestly not my fav, the chicken satay was fine and the peanut sauce was great. The Panang Curry with tofu was ok but I didn't care for this certain taste in it, I'm guessing it was Thai basil but that's just my personal preference to not have it included, unfortunately that flavor took over. I would of rather had it in pieces where I could take it out like other places do but it seems to be blended into it, again this is my preference and that's why I'm not taking stars away from that, I just don't like basil period. The Thai Fried Rice with chicken didn't have much flavor and the chicken had a weird old taste to it and nothing like the chicken satay. Fave thai place in SD!! The line can get pretty long so I would recommend checking the Yelp waitlist ahead of time. Service is super friendly and the inside feels clean and authentic. I would 100% recommend Koon Thai to anyone craving thai food! What I've tried: Pad thai - be cautious with the spice level! Even though it's from 1-10, level 2 is already a pretty good spice level for me Pad see ew - one of the best I've had! Very flavorful and high quality ingredients Pad kee mao - super delicious but I accidentally got spice level 5 which was quite spicy. It was also pretty salty so the spice + saltiness made it hard for me to eat, but otherwise the flavor was pretty good! Yum pla tod - the star of the show for me - the fried fish hit the spot and was cooked to perfection with a delicious sauce. The apples as toppings were new for me but I wasn't mad about it. Tom kha - this soup was suuuper coconutty and sour. Not what I'm used to so I might opt to try a different soup next time Mango sticky rice - the perfect end to the meal! My boyfriend & I went here after Valentine's day for dinner thinking it wouldn't be so busy, but that was not the case. It was busy but not too bad, 12 to 30 minutes wait time. We ordered the Moo Duo which is a combination of bbq pork & crispy pork belly, we also ordered their pineapple fried rice that comes with chicken & shrimp, chicken pad Thai and Som Tum Thai style. All of the plates were flavorful and delicious. We enjoyed 2 of the 4 dishes more; Pad Thai & the Thai Som Tum. The only minor issue we had with the Som Tum was that we ordered it at a spicy level 6 but it came out level 2 spicy. The issues we had with the Moo Duo is the dish would be better without the crispy pork because the sauce the dish comes with caused the crispiness to become less crispy, some pieces became chewy & stuck to our teeth. The pineapple fried rice dish would be better in my opinion if it had just 1 of the 2 protein because for me there was too much going on in the dish. We ordered delivery for Koon Thai as I have never tried it before. We got the red curry with chicken and the tom yum soup! Red curry (mild) - 7.5/10, the curry flavor was good, however the eggplant wasn't cooked all the way and it was still kind hard/chewy Tom yum soup (mild) - 10/10, I love a good tom yum soup and this hit the spot! Excellent food and service! Went for Happy Hour, but after looking at the menu, just had to try Khao Soi Gai Todd. I hadn't heard of it before, but a friend recommended it and it was absolutely delicious! It's a somewhat thick curry broth with soft egg noodles, very tender chicken, pickled cabbage, red onions, fresh lime, a chili oil drizzle and then crispy egg noodles on top. Loved it! I originally went for the happy hour specials, which are also a good deal. You can get any appetizer on the menu, then you get a choice of one out of four per selected appetizers for free. The chicken panang curry is absolutely delicious! This dish is creamy and full of bold flavors, Koon Thai's version is my favorite. The cream cheese appetizers are super yummy and pair well with the panang. Pricing is fair and the food is great quality. I came here on a Saturday night around 7 pm. I put in a reservation on Yelp for 5, but it wasn't too busy. We were seated right away and brought water. We then decided what we wanted and waited a little bit before waving a server down to order. After we ordered, we waited a long time before our food came out. I saw a lot of take out orders before our order came out. We had 3 kids with us, and they were getting hungry and impatient. When our food came, it was delicious. Everything was sooo good. The yellow curry was great, it had a little bit of a kick to it, but I enjoyed it. It also came with white rice. The pad see ew was very tasty. However, the beef didn't taste fresh. It was kinda dry, but it tasted very good. Pineapple fried was delicious. It came with shrimp and little bits of chicken. Everything was great besides the service.. we had to flag down our server and also had to flag someone down for water and also to pay. If you're in San Diego and craving good Thai food, this is the best place to go. I absolutely love their Thai-style papaya salad (I prefer it not spicy, and they made it perfectly). We tried nearly everything on the appetizer menu: papaya chicken, roti with curry, and even the fried tofu--all super yummy! We did family style, so we got to sample a bit of everything. Well , if you saw my last review you'll notice I couldn't give as many stars as I wish I could have in part because the app automatically added tip to my bill. I didn't like this at all because I like to leave cash along with a note saying that it is a gift not a tip so it is not required to be reported . I was told that I could enter no tip if I wanted to leave cash on table. I did and was still charged for the tip. Abe Lincoln said, " you fooled me once, shame on you. You fooled me twice shame on me." George Elliott Noble Jr added to that, " There ain't gonna be a 3rd time" I also have a 3 strike rule that stipulates that if I they get 3 strikes they're out , and I'll never return. I'll also add that with all the other restaurants in the area that arent as expensive it is highly unlikely that I'll return any time soon. The service and wait time for my food was slow. This was understandable given the time and amount of customers. I had a couple of servers. The guy that took my order wasn't friendly. There was a gal who was. The Chicken pad Thai was very good. It arrived at my table steaming hot. NOT as big a portion as I expected, especially when The bill came to over $15 with the forced tip and tax. I felt there was a fair ratio of chicken to noodles rsThe house salad was also very good. It was nice and cold.I felt it was way to small. My next visit will determine whether there will be future visits. If they decide to honor me as a veteran or a senior with a discount that would be great. Overall it's not bad but could be better. The Thai tea was a little bland to me. Felt like it was poured from a can. The pineapple fried rice was very curry tasting which I didn't expect. Also it said there was suppose to have raisins in the rice but there wasn't any. The tom yum soup was good and flavorful. The service was a little lacking. Our server basically just took our order but never really checked on us to see if we needed anything. We actually needed more napkins and flagged down a bus boy on his way back to the kitchen but he told us to ask for our server. We just needed napkins and it was an easy request but he couldn't do it. Guess he was too busy trying to get orders out to others. Also it was advertised there were buy one, get one free appetizers for happy hour until 6pm. We were there about 5:40 and our server did not inquire us about that. We only found out from another table telling us and that there should have been a menu on each table. But I guess because it was close to the end of happy hour, they decided to remove the menu. We finally talked to our server and asked about the happy hour and she said yes until 6pm and she apologized for not telling us and also for removing the menu. Returned to try a few more items and once again they hit the mark. I was craving comfort food and had to order pad thai. It was solid. Our server did not ask us for our preferred spice levels this time - the dish came out to be very mild, so great for me but not for everyone. My partner had the khao soi and the curry was very flavorful - I wish the crispy noodles were less chewy. Our friend ordered the boat noodles and although the broth had a lot of depth in flavor, the portion size was definitely smaller than we expected. We shared a pot of tom kha and it was a nice balance of tart and sweet. Overall, I still think this is a good choice for Thai food in the area, especially because the plaza tends to have more parking available compared to some parts of Convoy. read more
