Went for an early dinner on a slow Thursday evening. I came in to try one of their bowls of soup. I settled on the boat noodles. The broth was very flavorful. They give you condiments on the side if you want to add more spice or fish sauce. In my opinion, you really don't need to add anything else. Service was quick and easy. Nothing to complain about. The boat noodles were about $17. They give you a lot of food so I think it's worth it for the price. I would recommend giving this place a try - especially if you like spicy food.
Felt like a hidden gem! Came in on a Sunday for dinner, and the place was empty except for the staff in the back tables, who were having a grand old time watching the NFL playoffs. The staff were very friendly, and the place felt very authentic and family-oriented. They told us to give them a holler once they were ready to order and we did, and he complimented our choices as we picked the most popular items on the menu. We got the Lao Sausage, nam khao, and the lao papaya salad to split between me and my friend, and we got a side of sticky rice. They very kindly brought us over a complimentary dessert which were these yummy coconut rice flour cakes. I think it was because we were the only ones there but it was a nice gesture nonetheless. Then they brought us out all our food at once, and made sure we were taken care of before leaving. The lao sausage was both of our favorites; it had such good balanced flavor, and it was delicious to eat along with the sticky rice, which was well cooked. The nam khao was pretty good, but not my favorite in San Diego, as it was a little salty. It tasted better when I ate sticky rice along side it. The Lao papaya salad was very funky and felt like a good representation of how lao style papaya salad should taste like, with the strong fermented fish sauce flavor coming forward. Overall, very nice spot to go and hang out with a friend and enjoy some comfort Lao food for a decent price.
Stopped by Spicy Lao for lunch on Sunday afternoon. The place was only a quarter filled, but did brisk takeout business. Service was friendly and quick. We ordered boat noodle soup, pad thai with tofu and pad see ew with Chinese sausage. The portions were generous and flavor on point. Boat noodles could have been a pinch spicier. Price point was fair at about $15-20 based on your protein choice. At the register they offered a few desserts, fried chicken skin ($20 a bag), fried pork skin ($17 a bag) and assorted Jerry. Looked good, but didn't buy. Note there is a 4% discount if you pay by cash. Parking is hard since there are 4-5 more more eateries in the lot. If you go around back there is a second lot and plenty of street parking.
This is a great place for Lao and Thai food. We have been here 3 times so far. The sausage is the best. Very taste with some kind of thin noodles and meat inside. That crack sauce that comes on the side is the perfect combo. Nice and spicy! The wife had a little the Tom Yum soup with shrimp. It was very good. The broth was nice and flavorful. The mango sticky rice wasnt available but they had jack fruit sticky rice. It was very sweet and the jack fruit had a good flavor. Its kind if a mango flavor but mixed with something else. Maybe a melon type flavor. Tough to describe but delicious. Lastly, they also sell some killer beef jerky. Mango and pineapple chilli. Both are very good. Way better than some mass produced stuff.
I grew up eating homemade Vietnamese banh canh (my parents even handmade the noodles), so I was so curious to try khao piak sen since it's so similar. The broth was piping hot, garlicky, flavorful, and packed with chicken. Noodles were bouncy and chewy, my fav. Just a heads-up, it also comes with chicken feet and pork blood cubes, which I didn't mind but might surprise some people. I also got the papaya salad, Lao style, level 2 spicy. It was more pungent and bold than the Thai style. Honestly, I liked it way more made this way! Service was quick, and the waiter even brought extra seasonings. Only downside was parking. I came on a Saturday and it took a solid 10 minutes to find a spot.
This is my second time here. My friend and I came here for our birthday lunch. We ordered the Lao sausage, Laap, and stir fried noodles with seafood. The Lao sausage was amazing! The sauce that comes with it was also bomb! The beef Laap was also very tasty. There was an abundance of citrus flavor to this dish, so if you are not a fan of lemons, I would not recommend it. The stir fried noodles was nothing special - meaning that every other Asian cuisine has something like this (Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese). Aside from that, the food here was excellent! I would come back and try some of the other menu items for sure.
Stopped by Spicy Lao Kitchen for takeout after a long morning at the hospital--my mom insisted (post-anesthesia cravings are real ). The gentleman who took our order was friendly and extremely patient with us. We took our order to-go. I went with the pad see ew--not traditionally Lao, but I needed wok'd noodles--asked for Xtra Veggies and spice- it hit the spot. The Lao sausage was better than okay, but I'm used to the extra spicy, homemade kind from a friend's aunt in Southeast San Diego, so my bar is a little high. The seafood salad. It was full of crisp greens and, fresh herbs, like South East Asian salads I've had-- the raw tuna was a nice change, especially compared to papaya salad with raw shrimp, which I usually go for. We both got the lemon Thai iced tea and WOW--this was magical. It had that creamy Thai tea feel (without condensed milk! Which I cannot drink) with this unexpected citrusy brightness from the lemon. So good. Definitely coming back to try the Tom Yum wings and more of the menu!
A hole in the wall - [[HIGHLIGHT]]clean restaurant and the restroom is good, but could be better.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service is quick and friendly. The food - I probably won't come back again. The best thing I've had is the lao sausage - I'll eat that again. The wings were crispy and light on the tom yum flavor. Everything else that we had had an acquired taste that wasn't for me. I would recommend people to try it and give it a shot, but for me there wasn't anything that floored my taste buds.
An underrated spot for Lao food with bold flavors! The laap was amazing and the sauce was so tangy and spicy. We got a level 7 spice, which is perfect for people who can handle the heat. The khao piek sen was also a unique dish with a collagen rich chicken broth made with chicken feet. The udon that came with it was perfectly chewy, but I thought the soup was a little too salty. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The spot is casual and the workers are very welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our server was so friendly and checked up on us frequently! I can tell that the food was made with love and authentic ingredients!
Came here for the first time and everything we ordered was delicious! We ordered thum kapoon, but they accidentally brought out papaya salad instead. As soon as we mentioned it, they quickly made the thum kapoon and gave us the papaya salad on the house. Amazing customer service from Noy! I can honestly say this is now one of my favorite Lao restaurants to dine at. Definitely coming back! Must!!!

I came here today bc I had gotten Burmese sausages earlier and it missed with me. I had to make it up by getting Lao sausages! [[HIGHLIGHT]]This restaurant is decently sized with plenty of seats.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I saw a lot of people picking up to go. Since I was the only here with one other family, service was fast and my server was very nice. She had such a friendly smile. I had to order papaya salad lao style, well, bc its the only way to make papaya salad. Stinky, salty, and potent in aroma and flavor. To me, this is real food. My only disappointment was I asked for spicy level 10, or 11, or 12, and I thought I got a level 1. I thought she misheard me, but I realize my spice tolerance is just over 9000. Haha. The Lao sausage was awesome. Thats the flavor profile I've been craving and it has been quenched today! I really loved this place and its deep flavors. We've been wanting to come here for awhile and finally made it and have been back a few times!! There aren't very many Lao restaurants in San Diego...this one is closer and will now be my go to!! The owner is super friendly!! The Lao sausage is one of the best I've ever had.. definitely need to order to try it out! We had the papaya salad and that was good and flavorful but next time I will request for a spicier one (I couldn't get it too spicy as my friend doesn't eat that spicy). Spicy Lao Kitchen in Kearny Mesa is such a great find, especially since there aren't many Laotian spots around. I tried the Lao chicken sausages, sticky rice, and papaya salad--everything was delicious and full of flavor. There's usually an older gentleman (possibly the owner) who is always friendly and gives great recommendations. A younger guy there is also nice and provides good service, though he's still getting familiar with the menu. The wait can be a little longer than most places, but the food is definitely worth it. They also sell prepackaged beef jerky. I tried two flavors and both were really good. If you're looking to try Loation food this place is authentic and worth a try. read more

Large parking lot shared with other businesses but tough to find spots during lunch/dinner. The side of the building's parking is taken up by cars for sale. One person was taking orders/serving so it was quite busy at lunch time. Order took around 20 minutes so be prepared during lunch. They have tables inside to eat there. Tried: Tom yum wings - these were disappointing. Flavor was okay, but crunch wasn't as good. Beef protein stick - good. The sauce added another dimension of flavor. I would recommend to get this. There was a lot of fat/crunchy tendon though. Prices are high, $15 per item even for apps. Spent $30 on just two items that were more of a snack than a meal. read more

Small, local, and relatively new Lao place! I've been coming to this plaza since I was a kid and this place is definitely a great addition! Our server was super nice and he made sure my boyfriend and I had everything we needed throughout our meal! The Khao Piak was the most flavorful one I've ever had and its richness came from actual parts of the chicken instead of just flavoring. The papaya salad was good although I love sour things so I requested limes on the side! The Tom Yum wings were sooo good I've never had that kind of flavor of wing before and they were so crispy I'll get again for sure (I ate one before I took the pic because i was toooo excited)! I also noticed they have homemade beef jerky and I definitely want to swing by and pick some up next time even if I'm just in the plaza for some matcha. read more

There aren't very many Lao places around SD, so this is a hidden gem. We tried a few items, a small tom yum soup, crispy rice salad, beef salad, & tom yum chicken wings. Everything tasted amazing & unique as I don't really have Lao food too often. Overall, we were super satisfied & glad we found this place! I will definitely be coming back! read more

I went here as a first stop of the night for only appetizers and they were all saporous! 11/21/2024. Tom Yum chicken wings ($13.95): crispy and well-seasoned with a hint of lime, 4/5 stars. Beef on a stick ($13.95): tender with a sweet marinade. Would have improved with more fat content, as fat is flavor, 3.5/5 stars. Moo Tod (fried pork belly) $13.50: surprisingly only slightly crispy but the bacon was tender and had me hooked, 4.5/5 stars! Onto the service, as our cup of waters were delivered shortly after being seated; however, the server took about twelve minutes to take our order and only another customer was there. Regardless, this is a casual joint that deserves recognition for their tasty dishes. Check them out! read more

Moved to SD over a year ago and 2 ppl referred me here. The food here is so good !! The two items in the pics here are my go to! I was just introduced to the green Thai tea and now I will never drink another orange one. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The music they play is also so good,[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]the owner is cool and it feels very family like in there.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] So you know the service is amazing! MUST TRY. My husband and I were visiting SD for the weekend and wanted to try something new. We stumbled upon spicy lao kitchen and decided to dine here for lunch. The restaurant is located in a plaza and had plenty of parking space. There were a lot of things on the menu we wanted to try. We ended up ordering the pho lao, the broth was good and tastes sweeter to me compared to Vietnamese pho. They also have fried garlic as a topping and came with similar veggie condiments as viet pho. We ordered the crying tiger with white rice, this was my favorite dish. The beef was cooked perfectly, it was tender and seasoned well. Perfect mix of spicy, sour and paired well with the chilies, onions and cilantro. The tom yum wings were fine, the batter was a tad too thick for our liking but we did enjoy the seasoning on it regardless. They also sell beef jerky near the cashier, we bought a few bags and love it. Will definitely be back when we're visiting SD! read more
I will begin this review with the full disclaimer that I am a wimp when it comes to spicy food (I don't know what happened when I turned 40, but my stomach seems to cry anytime I want to enjoy spicy food!) However, my friend Jenne is a big fan of Spicy Lao Kitchen, and said I could request less spice, so I decided to give it a try. We started with the sausages which were too spicy for me, but were very tasty. Chun P ordered the whole Tilapia, with a spice level of 3, and was enjoyable. We also sampled the drunken noodles which were fresh and delicious. The showstopper IMO was the Nam Kao crispy rice salad, the texture and taste were out of this world! Came in on a Saturday afternoon, and I'm surprised the place wasn't more packed. But I'm glad it wasn't because we were promptly seated and right away I knew what I wanted to order. There aren't too many Lao restos that I know of so definitely check this place out. Notable dishes - the Tom yum wings, nice and crispy with the right amount of Tom yum seasoning. The Lao sausage, cute little chunky things filled with flavor accompanied by the perfect jeow. Everything was delicious! No complaints about any of the dishes we ordered. I would definitely order them all again. And make it a point to stop by here when I'm in the SD area. Let's not forget that they also sell beef jerky! My friend and I always meet on Tuesday night for our usual yap sesh and hang out. We love to support local and we may have found one of our new fave spots to add to one rotation. There wasn't many people for a Tuesday night. Service was phenomenal! We didn't get a picture of the food because we were sooo hungry we just dug right in. We ordered tom kha chicken wings, shrimp spring rolls, beef yellow curry, and chicken drunken noodles. Lemme tell you between the two of us, we demolished it LOL Just as a disclaimer, we were there for at least two hours. The food was delicious and the person who got our order was amazing. Always checking in on us, getting refills for water, and was super nice about not pushing us out of the restaurant. Though we were constantly checking if they needed our table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have a steady flow of customers, but not so much of a rush where you feel rushed to get out.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The ambiance is super chill and has lots of great sunlight and brightly lit.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Lots of parking. Even though there's a brewery next door, still ample parking. We also did order dessert: mango sticky rice and the banana egg roll with ice cream. Both were very good. The banana egg roll reminded me of Filipino banana lumpia. Not exactly like it, but enough so that the memory unlocked. I think if they did make it like banana lumpia, it would be better. But I wouldn't doc a star for that because then it would be Lao/Thai food. And I totally respect that. It's still very good and not extremely oily or feeling heavy. One of my friends suggested Spicy Lao Kitchen for dinner and although I live only 10 minutes away, I had yet to try it! - PARKING - Shares a parking lot with other businesses in this small strip mall, but there's a decent amount of spaces! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - There are actually a good amount of tables inside, with varying table sizes. I did feel like it wasn't the cleanest restaurant, and even found a bug inside of the menu. The server was very nice though, and was attentive throughout our entire meal. She also let us know about the check-in offer for a free drink! After ordering, we got our food fairly quick, and it all looked really good. - FOOD - Chicken Wings (6pc): Crispy, crunchy skin, and pretty moist meat inside! The powdered flavoring was yummt too! Lao Papaya Salad: More pungent than other Papaya salads, so be mindful if you can't handle it! We got a level 4 which is supposed to be mild, but it did tingle! Pad See Ew: A classic and favorite, but I think I have had better Pad See Ew at other spots. Still a good tasting dish! - OVERALL - I'm glad I finally got to try this neighborhood spot, but I think I have my go-tos for Lao/Thai food. read more

San Diego has a pretty Lao community, finally got a chance to support the locals and try out a spot. Here's a spot my friend recommended. AMBIANCE: Parking: Plaza parking, I generally have no issues. Seating: Inside seating. Good for groups, room for about 30 people. Feels: You're in the outer area of Convoy, which makes it parking friendly. It's a spacious place that's clean that pays homage to Lao culture. I dig the hip hop music in the background and the sports on the television. Great for a food adventure or going out with family FOOD: Tom Yum Chicken Wings (Recommend) Crunchy with a subtle kick from that tom yum seasoning. It's not as strong but it's gives a nice touch to it. The crunch and freshness of the chicken was perfection. Nam Khao (Recommend) Basically, it's like fried rice but crunchy rice. I enjoyed the mixed flavors of the cilantro, cured pork, and peanuts. I also appreciated the lettuce to serve as a wrap. Make sure to eat ASAP so it doesn't get stale. Thai Lemon Ice Tea (A-Ok) This is certain not your regular iced tea. It's a bit sour and sweet but a little something extra on the sour side. Maybe it's an acquired taste but at the moment, not the greatest. Heavenly Beef Jerky (Recommend) Great! Rough, savory with a nice kick! CUSTOMER SERVICE: Diamond was great! Friendly and professional. TL; DR OVERALL: 5 Stars. Awesome! Reasonable prices, good flavors, and pleasant experience. I appreciated the food and the people. I came here for lunch and got the heavenly beef jerky, crying tiger, and a Thai tea. My friend opted for the lunch special and ordered the pad kra pow. The lunch special comes with soup and salad! I enjoyed everything I ordered, although it did take over 20 minutes to get the first item ( beef jerky). The flavors were there and food was authentic. My friend didn't like their food that much though. They do play some loud r and b, so it may be hard to hear your friends talking. Haha. We have been wanting to try this place and we finally got a chance to. Everything on the menu looked good but we wanted to try Lao food so we mostly ordered dishes that were new to us. I love lemongrass and their dishes use a lot of it. Yum! My favorite was the appetizer lao sausages that we ordered. We also like the flavored tom yum fried chicken wings. The flavor wasn't as strong as we expected but it was crispy and not dry. The shrimp spring rolls were on large but falling apart a little bit. The peanut sauce that came with it was really good and had a little kick. We also liked the deep fried pork belly strips. Didn't know what to expect with that but we were pleasantly surprised. The crispy rice salad was a dish that we was on our radar to try. Some of us liked it but I thought it was ok. There was just too many flavors and textures to the dish. You wrap it in lettuce leaves to enjoy. The least favorite was the catfish and stick rice wrapped in banana leaf and steamed. It was ok and a bit on the bland side besides the strong catfish taste. We finished up with their delicious mango sticky rice dessert. We definitely recommend that dish too. read more

Finally! We have been eyeing this restaurant since their store name was posted! I felt it took than over a year to open this restaurant, so we are excited to try it! The menu is impressive. Lots of different dishes for Thai and Lao food. It took us a while to decide what to eat because there are so many interesting dishes. We ended up ordering three dishes. My favorite was Crying tiger "Seen Nam Tok". I loved the flavors and tenderness of the beef. I ordered the spicy level 3 so It's not too spicy although there were many peppers on it. Crispy rice was interesting. I am not sure if I would order again. The pad kra pow was pretty good, but similar to other places. Food was pretty good. However, the service was kinda lacking. Only one waitress and she was pretty busy serving the tables. I hope they get more server to improve the service. read more
