Good portion sizes, however they fell short in a couple of areas, the brisket was dry and bland, the ribs were tender however both meats lacked smoked flavor, the bbq sauce was heavily tomato based and really needs to be worked on. I went here for lunch with a bunch of colleagues when we traveled last. The atmosphere isn't great or anything, but they have an alright amount of room. All the main meal's a.k.a meats were not fresh/cold and over cooked and hard/chewy i got the two meat (chopped brisket and sliced brisket) sandwich with cheese jalapeño bread and they only gave me the sliced brisket and not a lot at all and i still only ate less than half of it and mostly the bread the onion rings were okay-ish and the other people i was with got the two meats trays with two sides and they both got coleslaw and the jambalaya rice and they took one bite and didn't eat anymore ribs-not good same problem at my sliced brisket and the chicken wasn't cooked that great either the seasoned fries were the best thing. This place has been here a good while. I graduated from this town in 1993 and that was likely the last time I visited. Not much has changed. Looks exactly the same as far as it did back then. Their menu is bigger-boudin, giant salads, fajitas. Our order: 3/4 pound of brisket, a chopped beef sandwich and fries, plain baked potato. Total price was around $21. Potato was the best part. Son didn't eat the whole sandwich. He said it had too much sauce. There sauce tastes meat based. The option of lean or most brisket is not given. The menu reads just brisket. Don't come here!! Came around 7pm, I ordered 5 items and they didn't have it. No Cole slaw, no Mac n cheese, no fries, no burnt ends, no cheese sticks, no nothing!! I was so disappointed for returning to this place after 5 years. Back then I was treated rudely and today I got the same treatment. Why? And I only returned as a favor for a friend, picking up her lunch. I vowed to never spend my money here again and I'm glad I didn't. I've been coming here for years and used to consider this to be one of the better BBQ restaurants in the area. That was before I knew what good BBQ was and certainly before Pit Stop opened. These days, I rarely come anymore. When I do, my typical order consists of the super chop combo with iced tea. The jalapeño cheese bread it comes on is pretty good, like Goode Co. up in Houston. I think the sausage tastes better than the brisket. Their BBQ sauce is part of what makes me not like the food so much here, it's just different than others. If you don't care for BBQ, they also offer a few other items like burgers, pork chops and chicken fried steak. Prices are reasonable for a BBQ restaurant and service is good, even though they don't provide a whole lot since it's cafeteria style and they don't have table service. I always had mad love for this place, living in Texas city for 20 years. Of course support local businesses. But after today, I might have to change my mind. Food is great but treatment towards minority customers is terrible. Had a Caucasian woman in front of my wife. Cashier was super nice, going out of his way to make sure she has everything she needed even giving her extra stuff. There goes my wife greeting nicely, he doesn't even acknowledge her. Asked what she needs and not how can he help her. She gets her order, asks for side and he gives her the minimum. Then comes Caucasian male after her. Quickly changes his attitude to being nice. I've been a customer since 1998, and food has always been good, but service is terrible.. especially when it is slow/down time. No customers in line except for a large to-go order being completed. Meat cutter would not greet or make eye contact with me or my father. He could have told us it would be a minute, but chose to talk to lady with to-go order, smiling and speaking low to her. Another employee walking around, looked at us and said nothing. After about 4 minutes of being ignored, we walked out. Manager tried to resolve issue before we left, but I felt it would not be handled properly. I later sent an email to the owner, to which he said he would have the manager contact me. I responded with it being a conflict of interest, and would not wish to speak with the store manager, as I felt it would not be handled properly. The next day, manager called me, waking me up, asking if I would like to discuss the problem. I advised him he woke me and it was a bad time. The owner evidently doesn't want to be bothered with problems. I will NOT be continuing business with Grad Prize BBQ any longer. I had to update my review of Grand Prize. They've once again become the best barbeque spot in Galveston County. Brisket is slow cooked over mesquite and don't miss the loaded baked potatoes or their pecan pie. It's all so good and I love to get their sliced brisket with two sides and home made jalapeno cheese bread. The sauce is on the side - just like it should be with real barbeque along with sliced onions and pickle. They have one of the best sauces I've ever found at a restaurant. Back on track, Grand Prize. Let me just start by saying the service and their attitude need to get a serious adjustment. A lot of the employees at these restaurants in this industrial area do not care about customers because they know that no matter what, they will get business everyday from refinery workers at lunch time (mainly BP/Amaco) no matter what-people have got to eat. This is another place that we call in orders to monthly. We probably spend (as a company) about $800 a month here with the addition of at least one yearly refinery wide lunch to 225+ employees. Those numbers shouldnt even matter because EVERY customer should be treated with respect and courtesy. Actually, my boss and I walked in today to pick up an order and the OWNER was placing blame on us ("we are not open yet, have a seat-i said sit down") and was short tempered when there was obviously a better approach. My boss is one of the friendliest people I know and the owner's attitude caused her to blurt out "he is rude", which coming from her was totally unexpected. Not to mention, they lost our credit card phone payment slip so we were thankful we brought it just in case. Service aside, the food is really good. I like the grilled chicken sandwich topped with guacamole (which is a nice touch) and most of our employees like to order the two meat combo-choose from brisket, ribs, sausage or chicken and it comes with beans and potato salad or coleslaw for about $8. We will continue using this restaurant for our lunch meetings because our employees really like the food and are probably unaware of how badly we are treated upon picking up their orders. read more

Generally poor quality barbecue fare here. The lunch special was a chopped beef sandwich served with a hot link. Sounds reasonable. Except that it was a mess: the beef didn't taste fresh and perhaps it was chopped up hours ago. The sauce was thin and lacking in much flavor. The hot link wasn't; it could have been an Oscar Meyer frank. The bread wasn't much better --thick pieces of white bread that were just north of Wonder. The meager glop of potato salad was barely passable. My friends didn't enjoy their lunches either. BBQ beef on top of a baked potato? Seriously? Why not serve the potato as a side and not have the pile of beef on top of the potato? The potato was either raw or overcooked in sections --it just wasn't baked carefully or consistenty. Another friend's burger and fries were deemed "terrible" --the beef patty was frozen, he is convinced, because he knew it couldn't possibly be fresh. No salt at all on the waffle fries! While the meat was tender it had very little flavor and way too much fat still on the slices. Not a fan 2. Ribs. Good flavor but I could tell they had been sitting out for a while. very tough and dry. The rub/sauce was decent but I wanted tender and moist ribs. 3. Sausage. Not good at all. very bland and very watery. Almost like they had been in a covered steam tray all day and I got some of the condensation along with the meat. I received 3 riblets a small sausage link cut into 8 pieces, scoop of mac and cheese and pinto beans for $12.98 (without a drink). The sauce along with the food had very little flavor.
