Found Cajun Diner from talking to Galveston locals. Very unpretentious diner right on Seawall Blvd where you can get a window view of the gently rolling Gulf waves. Our server was very helpful attentive and pleasant. The seafood gumbo was delightedly flavorful. However, it was missing okra which I thought was a must-have gumbo ingredient. Otherwise, it was a filling bowl which ate like a meal. The other highlight was the jumbo fried shrimp which came with fried. The shrimps were beautifully golden-fried to crispiness and also very filling. For the price, Cajun Diner is definitely worth trying. Quick trip to this establishment during non peak hours and it was still busy! Love to see a Galveston institution succeeding in business. I came here with three of my friends for lunch on a Friday afternoon. We were able to get seated very quickly . We ordered the fried seafood platter the grilled fish platter, shrimp and grits with extra grits and a small salad. This was enough for a four of us. They had the best shrimp and grits I've ever had. It was topped with some kind of gravy and cheese. The shrimp was decent sized. The fish was well cooked and flaky. The ones that were fried were battered evenly and well. Some of the french fries were a bit soggy. I'm not a big spicy person, but their jacked up jalapeño was a good appetizer. It was battered well and didn't break apart when you cut it. Since we were doing family style, our waitress brought us as some extra sauces and plates and utensils . She was very sweet, very quick and have checked on us several times amazing service. The tables and chairs were stable and there's free parking out front . You could also see the ocean right across the street from the restaurant. It's a really good spot on the shore. Keep in mind they do not take reservation, but they can post events here . So if you plan to come and be a walk-in, I would expect this place to be busy on evenings and weekends. read more

I stopped by here a couple of days ago with my wife for dinner. We happened to be on the beach nearby when looking for a place to eat and my wife found The Gumbo Diner. When she called in the order they told us it would be ready in 5 to 10 minutes, which I thought was super fast. We arrived at the restaurant about 30 minutes later and the food was waiting to be picked up. Since I was only inside for a moment, I can't say I paid too much attention to the surroundings, but it did remind me of a classic diner. For dinner on this day, I decided to go with the crawfish etouffee. The menu described it as a traditional Cajun delight served with white rice. It was packaged into multiple containers, one for the etouffee, one for the rice, and one for the bread. I appreciated that, since it kept the bread from getting soggy and the rice from soaking up all the etouffee before we got home. After adding it all to a plate, I tried it and thought it was pretty good. The etouffee had plenty of crawfish meat, and the gravy had a nice flavor with a little bit of spice. Both my wife and my mother-in-law thought the shrimp and grits they had were pretty good as well. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. This quaint little place tucked on the seawall was worth the drive. The jalepeno poppers stuffed with crawfish, crab were delicious. The shrimp and cheesy grits were very tasty. Very well seasoned. I couldn't finish it. And the gumbo, I thought I ordered a small bowl But their small is enough for two I could only taste it. The gumbo Roux was a little too thick for my liking, It had a lot of chicken & sausage and an adequate portion of rice. I only had a little taste too full to eat it, the sweet waitress Ms Yvonne packed it for me to go. For all the times I have been to Galveston, I have always eaten medioce food. I felt like the whole island was a tourist trap. However, on a recent visit, we were out here during the winter and on a weekday night. Most places closed at 9 pm, and it was already 8:30 pm. I always feel bad about coming so close to closing time, but we were starving! Upon entering, I always ask if it's too late, but they were welcoming even though I could see the staff doing prep work to wrap up for the night. We placed our orders quickly and the food came out just as fast! We had the large seafood gumbo, it was solid, but our least favorite dish. Next was the seafood sampler, fried, came with a huge piece of catfish, oysters, and shrimp. They use a cornmeal breading, and it was superb. My favorite were the shrimp. It came with fries and coleslaw. Their cocktail and tartar sauce were really good as well. And the star of the show was the crawfish etouffee. It was very rich and flavorful. We ended the meal with their fresh beignets, they are light and fluffy and warm. You can ask for a side of honey or syrup as well, but the powdered sugar was plenty sweet. This is an older establishment on the Seawall. The inside is a little dated and the floors need a good cleaning. The food however was amazing. The shrimp and grits are the best ever. This little diner is great. It's located on the Seawall and has a great menu. I was here before the breakfast crowd arrived. They have a traditional selection of breakfast items, from fluffy pancakes, Belgium waffles, chicken and waffles, omelettes and biscuits. I had the biscuit and gravy combo. It comes with 2 eggs, sausage or bacon, cheesy grits or hash browns. I opted for the bacon and cheesy grits. The biscuit wasn't large, but it was delicious. I really love the cheesy grits. read more

Clean but small establishment. Good waitress. Asked for a sample of the gumbo and I personally didn't like it because it tasted powdery so I ordered the junior cheeseburger with fries and sweet potato fries on the other order. Great burger and fries. Good sweet tea too. Stays busy even during the week. Seemed the staff all got along well with each other. I wanted to order the beignets but we've eaten so much these past few days that it's a shame. Next time... I recommend trying it out since they have great variety of food items. We stopped here after a day at the beach after searching for a casual place. It's right across just about from pleasure pier and it's kind of small but it is a diner so that's expected. We ordered the lil daddy gumbo which was huge and coming from a New Orleanian, was tasty with a rich dark brown roux. We also ordered the half and half shrimp/oyster po boy which came dressed with cabbage, spicy mayo and pickles. It was a good size and the seafood tasted fresh. I ordered a Mac and cheese which was good, and my hubby got a Greek salad with blackened shrimp--it was fresh and delicious. This was the first time my partner had Gumbo in his life, and though it was tasty, it was a little bit on the salty side, so we were not really able to finish it. The greek salad was good, and so was the platter (though the gumbo in the platter was even more salty than the Main course one). Not super flavorful but nice flavor. 3 of us got the bourbon street platter and we all thought that a lot of the things were overwhelmingly salty. The green beans were sooo salty. The gumbo was salty too. The jambalaya was fine. The bacon wrapped shrimp were good. My mom got the chicken fried steak and it was a bit tough. Not our favorite. Our server was also not very friendly. He seemed annoyed. We would ask for things and then he'd have kind of rude responses. He kind of threw down the straws for us which we thought was strange. Staff have been there for some time, and know recommendations and good offering if you tell them what you're looking for.
