It's the Hungry Hardhats first day in Texas City and we tried Wrice BBQ. To be honest I was not impressed with the customer service nor the BBQ. Definitely not a return customer but I would like to hear from my fellow Yelpers to see what they have to say or if they recommend another local spot for BBQ. So let it be written... So let it be SMOKED.

Just came here today and was a bit disappointed, must been an off day for the Wrice establishment but I ordered moist sliced brisket and got the opposite of that. Hopefully next time my brisket will be more juicy and tender because these brisket sandwiches ain't cheap but can't blame them since everything has gone up in the last few years but in the end the sandwich must be right. Service was great and the place looked great also. Overall will give them another try but not anytime soon.

First time stopping by and the food is amazing! Tender, juicy, smokey, and just the right flavor. Highly recommend!

Food and service was great. The BBQ sandwich was perfect size and delicious. The baked beans and potato salad was perfect potion for me. It's a perfect spot for a quick bite or to hang around for a bit. I liked the atmosphere.

I took the hit so you don't have to. Look at how they charge a additional 2 dollars per side on the combo plate..smh

So when I was looking for a place to eat somewhere on our trip home from Galveston, I knew this might be my best chance. I'd originally planned on just ordering a simple brisket sandwich, but as I looked at the menu, I felt like I wanted one of everything. I was really tempted to order a loaded baked potato, but because I'd be eating it in the car, I figured that might be a bit too messy, so I eventually went with Plan A. One bite into that thing and I knew I made the right decision. It was so juicy and so flavorful. Just the perfect lunch for what I was craving. And then to make this love story even better, later that day, I went to HEB. My HEB happens to have one of those BBQ restaurants inside of it, and it's never open when I visit because I always do my grocery shopping in the morning. But this particular visit was at about 4pm. And I opted to order the exact same thing: a brisket sandwich, so that I could compare the two. I'm sure this is not news to Smokin Z's or their fans, but this was the most lopsided competition I've experienced in a while. My visit to HEB only made me appreciate Smokin Z's more, as the HEB version tasted like something made by my 11 year old nephew. I'm embarrassed I even put the two head to head, as we're talking about a totally different weight class here.

That said, Galveston's own Koop's goes above and beyond when it comes to giving meats the low and slow treatment. Koop's has sat on 45th and Broadway for at least five years, but today -- my 45th birthday -- was my first time visiting one of the island's very beloved eateries. Even before I set foot through its front door, my heart, mind and stomach were set on a one-meat platter consisting of brisket. I told P.J., who owns and operates the establishment, to give me a combination of moist and lean since I was a new customer. Well, well, well. It turned out that I made the right decision to get both types of brisket because I thoroughly enjoyed the one-meat platter: juicy, tender and ample. It was super easy to cut into pieces, too. I paired the meat with macaroni and cheese and broccoli and cheese after learning that the sides that I originally wanted -- the dirty rice and the corn -- ran out for the day. The former sides came in generous helpings, but because I was so enamored with the brisket, I didn't finish them, and they're now sitting in my fridge with the next item I'm going to rave about. My mom accompanied me, and she ordered the loaded baked potato. You know the old adage, "Everything's bigger in Texas"? It applies to the tater because it was massive enough to feed a whole family. A baked potato that huge isn't stingy on deliciousness. According to my mom, it was a bit spicy, which isn't a bad thing if you ask me. The interior of Koop's is quintessential Texan with some hints of the island. It was like dining inside an old time country store sitting beside a dirt road. To the right of the entrance is a corner that boasts the restaurant's numerous trophies and accolades, letting you know that they take their craft very seriously. As for the staff, P.J. and Kevin, the gentleman who served us our orders, are super friendly. Future diners are more than likely to leave Koop's not just full, but with a slightly larger friend circle.

Instead of brushing it off or giving the usual polite nod, he actually asked why, listened, and seemed to care about the answer. That part stood out more than anything on the plate. BBQ is a tradition, and everyone has their own style. Koops has theirs, and it clearly works for plenty of people. It just isn't mine. I won't be back, but the fact that the owner took the time to ask, listen, and treat feedback like something worth hearing says a lot about the place and the people running it.

When I walked in, the place was clean and the aroma of BBQ was smelling really good in the air. The decor was very nice and the owner was even nicer and very welcoming. I went in there only looking for ribs because I have found that a really good rib is hard to find, however, the ribs here were very tasty, a little pricey, but very good. I always say that I don't mind paying extra when the food is as good as the money spent for it. Now, let me tell you that I only purchased a pound of ribs and a quart of Mac and cheese and the M&C was also good. I believe that the young man helping behind the counter was the owner's son so that tells me that the business is family owned, can't go wrong with that. The other sides looked delicious as well but I was not really that hungry for other dishes. I will go back and try the other items on the menu at another time. Now that I know where it is, it will be easy peasy to get there again. Once again, I forgot to take a picture of the food but I will when I go back. I used to come here all the time with an ex-boyfriend but haven't been back in years. I made the drive from Katy to Bacliff to pick up some vintage garden trellises, and at just two miles away, I immediately knew lunch had to be at T-Bone Tom's. One of my favorite things about this place is the absolutely massive outdoor seating area. It's covered, so normally it's a fantastic place to sit without roasting in direct sun, but after several days of heavy rain mixed with Houston humidity and temperatures around 90 degrees, there was absolutely no convincing anyone in my party that sitting outside for lunch was a good idea. Only my second time ever sitting indoors here. The place was already bustling by 11:30 and packed by noon, which tells you everything you need to know. We were greeted immediately when we arrived, and even though we came through the back entrance for patio seating, the hostess was cheerful and accompanied us to the dining room, where we were also immediately greeted by one of the indoor hostesses. Our server Joshua was excellent throughout the meal--friendly, attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and always on top of things. We started with drinks and boudin balls, which came with four and ranch dressing. I tend to go through phases of what I'm addicted to, and right now it's boudin balls. If it's on the menu, I'm ordering them. These were fried to perfection, hot, and delicious. A great appetizer to start the meal. While we waited to order our main course, there were two things our table seemed to rave about: giant drink glasses and crackers. It sounds silly, but not having to constantly wait around for refills makes a big difference. And crackers on the table? It seemed like memory lane for the older members of our party, who quite enjoy bits of nostalgia. So few restaurants bother doing little things like that anymore, so my lunch selection was awarding me kudos before the lunch even started! Mom and Mark split the 14 oz. ribeye with spinach and potato salad. Although splitting two sides might have been enough, Mom added a side of mashed potatoes for herself. It's always a toss up with restaurants and steak. True mediums aren't always a true medium--you have to order medium rare or medium well to get it just right. But the medium here is actually a medium. Mom kept talking about how delicious the steak was and said it was one of the best she's had in a long time. If you know my mom, compliments don't come easy. It's a big deal. Ha. I ordered the plate I always get: the Monterey chicken with fried okra and spinach. It may have been years since I was last here, but this dish is as excellent as it has always been, if not better. The chicken was incredibly tender, cooked perfectly, and covered with flavorful mushrooms and onions. I also really love that their vegetables are homemade rather than straight out of a freezer bag. The fried okra and fresh spinach were wonderful. Berta ordered the chopped beef sandwich with potato salad. They gave her so much beef, there was enough for two people to enjoy that plate. She ended up taking more than half home. We finished the meal with vanilla ice cream and their infamous bread pudding, which was warm, rich, and easily enough dessert for four people to share. Mom had ordered it for herself and said she didn't want to share, but when she saw how big the portion was, she asked Berta and I to join in. T-Bone Tom's is a popular place among locals and tourists alike. It offers great food, a fun atmosphere, friendly service, and remains one of those places that still feels uniquely Texas in the best possible way. We'll definitely be back, and much sooner this time!
