Shocker - as a vegetarian I've never considered eating at Portillo's. I may have never done so, but I had company who craved Chicago dogs so we ordered delivery. Therefore I can't speak to service or ambiance. I can say that we ordered four different iterations of their Chicago dog and we all enjoyed it. BF had the traditional jumbo dog with everything and liked it. My cousin had her jumbo without relish or onions and was happy as a clam. Mom enjoyed her jumbo dog without the relish and also was pleased. I had the veggie version with no green yuck relish and fried onions and it was really good. Who knew I liked that flavor combo? Also, kudos for offering a veggie dog option. That's a smart business choice. I also had onion rings and while I usually prefer battered rings, the crunchiness of these was undeniably excellent, even delivered, even from a location not super near to me. Nice! My mom and cousin enjoyed their chocolate malt, and I applaud that they offer malts and not just shakes, but we only got one of the two we ordered. That was a shame. One of three things that I like the most about Portillo's is the collection of history. The copies of the prints, photographs, and movie posters that were part of Dick Portillos collection of memorabilia is something I come to just look at, and each location is decorated differently, so you will get something from each era. Two, it is not like any typical fast food restaurant. I put this place in the category of family oriented establishment. After an event, we have gone to this location, ordered, sat down, talked, and enjoyed our meal without any problems. I'm generally a fan of Portillos and I have eaten Portillos since living in Chicago but today I'm not a fan. I generally don't deviate from the menu with a beef dipped with hot peppers or the Chicago dog but today I ordered a cheeseburger with a beef to try since I have the cheeseburger once in my life. The cheeseburger looked ok except the dry looking beef patty that's noticeable right away and I thought maybe it not dry and old looking after all. I took my first bite and I noticed how similar it was to a whop#er with cheese with a better bun and lettuce. My thoughts were correct the beef patty was desert dry and not fresh made to order because it couldn't dry out that fast from walking out and eating it right away in my car 2 minutes later. Overall the quality and freshness on todays visit was a very poor experience since they weren't very busy. I ordered a cheeseburger meal, with fries and a coke and chocolate cake. The fries are the best crinkle cut fries around. Super golden crisp. They needed more salt though. The cheeseburger is huge, nice thick patty, with all the fixins. However they didn't give me the chocolate cake. I was very upset about that because by the time I realized it, I was already in Racine (35 minutes away). The only suggestion I would provide is making sure that the contents of the order are included in the bag before giving it to the customer. It's happened to us a couple of times and it's a bit frustrating. Passed through the drive-thru for a quick bite. I guess the speaker was a bit off for them to hear me. Repeated order three times, got to the window and it wasn't correct. Paid at one window, went to a different window to get food. The bag was covered in cheese sauce which got all over my steering wheel, when I looked up the lady that handed me the bag was gone. I cleaned my steering wheel and realized the cheese sauce I ordered was missing, guess it was on the bag instead. Why place and order online for a pickup time and walk out 22 minutes after said time with the food!?!?? 35 minutes for a salad and cheeseburger. Unacceptable. No receipt. Stopped in to have a dinner at this facility. They have three kiosks but we approved the sole cashier to place our order. There are big menu boards behind the cashier with limited explanations but we ordered anyway and paid and walked down to the pick up area. We found a booth to sit in and gathered condiments and napkins and waited for our number to be called. After picking up our bags of food we sat down and noted that we were missing some items. After retrieving them we ate our food. It was good but really could have used more sauce. Or gravy but we didn't have that knowledge as to how to order. My friends brought me to Portillo's, originally several weeks ago, and I've been back a few times since. The Italian beef sandwich reminds me of one of the few things my grandma actually cooked. The sandwich is warm, filling, and full of memories for me. They have these in Arizona, so I need to get my parents to go to one so my mom can try it too. Aside from the Italian beef, I've also tried a couple desserts. They are fine. The chocolate cake isn't too sweet, which is nice. The strawberry shortcake was good. My experience at Portillo's in Wisconsin wasn't representative of Portillo's. I was charged for, and paid for food I didn't receive (sad face) and the food I did receive was missing ingredients and had ingredients I did not want. It could have been a mistake or a long day and those things happen. I did reach out and Portillo's Management immediately apologized because off-nights happen. I went through the drive thru. The girl who took my order was very rude and complained that my car was loud. My vehicle is not loud. The truck behind me was the loud vehicle. When I got to the first window to pay, I sat there waiting for her to come to the window. She was talking to other employees and ignoring me. This one hurts! I have always looked forward to any trip to Chicagoland because it gave me an opportunity to sneak into a Portillo's for an awesome Chilli Dogs and some great onion rings. I was excited when they finally crossed the boarder and opened a few locations in my fair state. It's still a bit of a drive to get to Milwaukee or Madison... but I can get there way more often than Illinois. Sadly my last 2 experiences at the Wisc Portillo's have not been good. The Chilli Dogs where still good, but the onion rings and the service were just plain awful! I'll start with the rings. I want to point out that this is based on just two orders... but both orders where dry, cold, hard and very crunchy. The only flavor was the crunchy breading. Pretty much a waist of calories. If I'm going to be bad and eat onion rings... they better at least be worth it! These were not... most went into the garbage. Believe it or not, the service might have been even worse! On this last visit, I stood 2nd in line waiting to order as multiple employees walked by, all of them making sure they didn't make eye contact! No one was taking orders! Finally the guy in line ahead of me yelled "is anyone going to take my order"?! This got a manager to come over. But he had to unlock and sign into the cash register before one if the many workers standing around could come over and take an order. By the time I got to order, the line increased to at least 8 people. After I ordered, I slid down the line to wait for my meal. I noticed they made our rings and my iced tea right way, but our dogs took forever. Needless to say, the this was the reason the rings were cold (even though they were under a heat lamp for a while). But by the time I received my "iced" tea it was basically just tea. All but maybe 2 small cubes were left after melting for 10 mins while the food was being prepared. Why make drinks before the food is ready or even being made??? I sure that making a hot dog with chili, onions and cheese is not a time consuming event, but I do understand that the drive-through was very busy, and orders are most likely made in the order they are placed... maybe? But as I watched my ice melt and my rings get cold, I saw 3 workers just standing and talking behind the counter! No one seemed too interested in getting food out, except the manager, who was running all over. We also tried to get our knife and fork, ketchup and napkins set at our table while we waited for our food, but found no napkins anywhere. Everything was empty. We were in the restaurant for at least 30 mins, napkins where still empty when we left. Another thing completely missing was the signature clever "call outs" for orders when they are ready. I know that this is a little thing, but it's kind of what Portillo's does... and I enjoy it! Where is the "Number 292, I'm waiting for you"! Or the "If you are order number 353, come and see me". Just shows a lack of interest or motivation by this staff. Looks like I won't be going out of my way to get to this Portillo's any more. read more

Decided to have some Portillo's for lunch today. Ordered a hot dog and a burger. Pulled up to the window and heard several employees laughing, cursing and carrying on like they were having a house party inside. The young lady was curt, as if I had gone out of my way to interrupt her fun times. I was told to stay at the first window until the next car pulled around and then I could move forward. Whatever the reason behind that was. Another girl came to the window with someone else's order and quickly took it back from me, an honest mistake. Waited about 15 minutes listening to the staff carry on inside though the closed windows of my car until we got our order. Hot dogs buns ice cold and soaking wet, but the burger was the real terror. To quote my wife she said it tasted like she imaged a burger in prison would. I took a bite and yes, that is exactly how it tasted. For a "fast food" type eatery this place was super cute and eccentric. The decor reminds me of an old burger / bar back home that has eclectic decor with cute lighting and mood and it really reminded me about that bar. They have a large seating area that can fit any group or crowd. They also have indoor and outdoor seating with parking available in the lot. The employees are very nice and seem to enjoy their job. The beef sandwhich dog is def my favorite like oof add the cheese dip and it's amazing. Literally taste better than some of these other small mom and pop places. read more

They're almost always going to miss something, or get something wrong, or forget something , or add something you didn't want. But it'll be almost right every time! Recently, I ordered a cheeseburger with no onions - because I'm highly allergic to onions. The guy at the drive-through barked into the microphone "cheeseburger!". I said "did you get the no onions"? Pretty good, I grew up in Chicago and Portillo's is doing a better job than other Chicago traditions that have tried to expand into regional chains. The problem for all is that they have to rely on local young workers who aren't really old enough to get the idea of a longstanding tradition. While I've never gotten a hot dog with ketchup on it here (it would be the last time I ever set foot inside), I have gotten the wrong peppers on their Maxwell Street Polish, their Chicago style Italian Beef (the former should have "sport peppers," the latter should have Ghiardelli), and similar mistakes. To me, these are worse errors than getting an unusual specific order incorrect, that's an honest mistake rather than one that is closer to taboo. If someone wants a hot dog with ketchup and peanut butter, that's fine, but if I order a Chicago dog, make it a Chicago dog. I think the problem is in training. I'm a teacher so i talk to teens who work in fast food all the time. And it's not just fast food, places that hire people with no experience have just given up on the whole concept of training. Portillo's would never admit it, but these kids aren't very well trained. I asked them, do you know why they are called Maxwell Polish Dogs? Blank look. I would think a little history, a couple of pictures, an explanation why a 62 year old Cubs fan might have an issue with the wrong kind of peppers on his sandwich might lead to the kind of competence that in turn leads to more enjoyment of work. Of course that must also be accompanied by good pay. Well anyway, it's decent fast food, they have some great choices, and for the most part, they are getting closer and closer to authentic Chicago. I was in a reminiscent type of mood and wanted something for lunch that would be worth the hassle, so I talked myself into going to Portillos for a late lunch. I almost ordered the Italian beef but remembered the reviews I read about it being horrible, so I decided on a charboiled cheese burger( which is my go to) The burger was constructed nicely, but the charbroiled flavor was COMPLETELY MISSING. Growing up close to the Portillos located in Chicago might affect this particular review because I know what it is supposed to taste like. Now , the chocolate shake hit the right notes and took me to a nostalgic moment in time... Portillo's is always a good choice for a quick meal. Compared to other fast food, the quality and atmosphere is much nicer. The service at this location was pleasant, and we didn't wait long for our order. Prices are decent for the portion size, but again, with better quality than other fast food places you can expect to pay a little more. I ordered the jumbo dog with the works and my significant other got a burger. The hot dog was excellent, and I tried a bite of the burger as well. I was pretty impressed; we haven't tried a Portillo's burger and it was really good. The large side of fries we shared were hot and delicious - a solid portion for two people to split. This place is phenomenal because it's the only Portillo's that I've been too that isn't crowded with patrons with the drive thru backed up worse than a very congested highway. Like all portillo's, this place never fails to disappoint to give the best quality food as well as phenomenal customer service. Prices here are fair, wait times aren't bad at all. The chicken was also greasy and did not have a good flavor. They were tender and crispy, however. Portillo's is a little pricey for what you get. We would recommend the Chicago locations over most of the Wisconsin ones. This specific location doesn't have the best quality food.
