Went back recently to try the new owners food given time to acclimate himself. There's a slight change in the motif and the food is consistent and better. He did add a cute woman to assist him in the kitchen, That's always nice to have in the biz to be great by an attractive woman. The waiter attitude is really bad when we ask him to give us our receipt, he just "throw" it on the table. Also, the meat in the bibimbap is cold and just little. I don't think the meal is worth as it cost. We decide never come to eat again. read more

My friend and I were treated very badly when we asked the waiter to pay separately. I was angry about it and won't come back anymore.

I just ate takeout from this establishment; I ate bulgogi, and the tofu stew. My fiancee ate the spicy pork, while also trying samples of my food. I lived in South Korea for one year, and this restaurant has offered the most authentic korean cuisine since I arrived back stateside. I highly recommend this restaurant for korean tastebuds. My boyfriend and I were excited to try something new for lunch. Neither of us have ever had Korean, so we decided to try Koreana based on sheer curiosity and the great reviews. Upon arrival we walked up to the counter and placed our orders. My bf got the potato soup, and I ordered the Bulgogi. I really wanted to try the pork kalbi until I got there and saw that they do not serve it on Wednesdays. The very friendly owner/cook told us to take a seat after we ordered while she prepared our food. After a not-very-long wait, the food was ready. My Bulgogi (stir fried beef with what appeared to cabbage, onions, and rice) was pretty good. The beef itself was quite tasty, but it did not really have a fantastic "WOW" flavor that kept me coming back for more. The dish was good, but not great. The potato soup that my boyfriend ordered was the strangest "soup" I have ever seen! It had large chucks on bone-in-meat (presumably the pork neck) on top of big potatoes in broth. My boyfriend quite enjoyed it. I tried some of the meat, and it was tender and good, but the broth tasted too fishy to me, so I did not really care for it. The meal also came with these strange side dishes. One appeared to be kimchi (or some type of pickled seeming cabbage), one was a bean sprout salad, a cucumber salad, and then some cabbage that had a spicy sriracha-tasting paste on it. The sriracha cabbage (as I like to call it) was the best of the four sides. The other three sides had literally no flavor. I took two bites of each, and did not go back for more. The cucumber salad reminded me of the side dish from Kung Food minus the flavor. I was really disappointed in that, as they all looked fresh and tasty, but were really just bland and mushy. In the end, I don't know if I'll come back. Nothing about the meal really "wowed" either of us. read more

Been here a lot of times, but usually due to friends wanting to eat the black been noodles. The food here is okay usually order the jjajjangmyun with tangsooyuk. I have tried other items on the menu like jjambong, jaeyokbokkeum and kamjatang. Personally everything I tried was just okay nothing really memorable. Everything is self serve and there isn't a whole lot of items on the menu. Overall the place has a fast food type vibe where you just quickly eat, pay for your meal and then go. If your looking to eat Korean bbq or some fancy stew type food I would go elsewhere. I would say this place is more suitable for lunch or if your looking for a quick dinner option. read more

Got the potato soup that was recommended to me by a friend, I was expecting a broth but it was so oily. The dish was not bad but most of the meat was just bones. I came here with a couple of friends back in September when I first began classes at UB. Being raised in a Korean home and not being able to eat my grandma's home cooked meals made me very home sick. When I heard from a friend that there was a small Korean restaurant nearby, I was ecstatic! Their menu was relatively small, but what do you expect from a business run by a grandma and grandpa?! They were very nice and gave us extra rice when we asked. I ordered the soondubu while my other friends ordered the bibimbap, kimchi jjiggae, bulgogi and dak galbi? (My memory is kind of hazy since this was a few months ago.) I know my friends enjoyed their meal since their portions were pretty decent! My friend enjoyed his kimchi jjiggae but I didn't enjoy my soondubu jjiggae too much. I don't think it was bad, I think I'm just used to my grandma's soondubu jjiggae that I cannot seem to enjoy another rendition of it. I really enjoyed the banchans (side dishes) they gave. I wish I asked for more but I already felt guilty for asking for more rice! This place gives off a home-y vibe and I recommend it. read more

Quality of food is OK, however, attitude of owner/staff at the counter was very rude. I first wanted to order an item which is not supposed to be available on Monday, so the guy at the center rudely refused to take the order. I was really surprised with that rudeness. Then I ordered something else and I wanted to have it at the restaurant. It was approximately 7:20 PM. The guy again rudely told that I can only order take out because they are going to close at 8 PM. I agreed to that and ordered 'Bugogi on Rice'. I waited for 10/12 minutes and the food was ready. I asked for plastic cutlery and he fished out couple of spoons and threw in the bag, no napkins though. I came to my hotel and ate, when I finished eating, it was still 3 minutes to 8 PM. I am not going back to this place again. Also there was no side dish for my order. read more

Agree with Lappa (3 comments down). Koreana used to be my favorite place to eat when work brought me into town which was often enough. I would find myself eating here at least once a week, and this is despite the additional 20 minutes it takes me to drive there. Owners have changed hands past winter, and unfortunately I will never come back here again after the recent meal I had. Food after the ownership change just does not compare. My standards for food is already on the low side, but when you are served with what should be Gamjatang (pork bone soup) and find out it is mostly bone soup, you feel well.. just a little cheated. I'm sad to say that I can cook a better dish, and partner can tell you, I'm a below average cook at best. Also interesting to note, the new owner was super chatty and friendly with a "regular"(even serving and bringing out another customer's plate, and 5 minutes later politely asking how his meal was). And yet did not do the same with our table (we had to pick the food from the counter ourselves -- which iS the koreana standard). However being treated differently as a customer is unacceptable. And little did the new owner know I use to be a koreana "regular" too. Looks like I'll have to find a new place for my visits in town. Wish the previous owner well, wherever she is. read more

An interesting mix of traditional and non-traditional Korean dishes (half the menu is Korean Chinese or sort of Asian fusion). The flavor is authentic--I've eaten Korean food all my life both in the States and in Korea, and this is pretty decent, without twists or surprises. The banchan (side dishes) are good but limited in number (expected for a small place like this). I wasn't a fan of the baechu kimchi, which could have used more fermentation, though to be fair I'm a disgrace to my family and don't like most kimchi. Good rice--nothing fancy with beans and dates, but not plain white rice. Not much more to say about that, but it had to be mentioned since, you know, proud heritage and whatnot. The "pork kalbi", which is really gamjatang (a soup), is solid, though a bit spicier than typical and could have used a little less cooking time for more tender meat. I'd personally be thrilled if this were replaced or added to with spicy kalbi tang since it's so close to being great and would probably appeal to more people without the challenge of picking away at the bones. The jjajangmyeon is a bit on the sweet side compared to most, but it's also extremely savory and has the perfect consistency. The noodles similarly had just the right firmness and texture. There are a lot of Korean restaurants that specialize in just one dish, and in an area with more Koreans this restaurant could probably thrive serving only jjajangmyeon. I look forward to trying a bunch of other dishes. It's been a while since I've had decent Korean food, and stumbling across this restaurant on my way to the tailor in the same lot was a pleasant addition to my afternoon. ____ Just some quick notes after reading other reviews: - Bibimbap is usually served in plain ceramic or metal bowls. The hot stone bowls are for "dol sot"/"gop dol" bibimbap, which, yes, is often tastier than the regular variety. - I never ate here when it had the original owners, so I can't say whether this restaurant is worse now, but I definitely didn't see any rude behavior or yelling.
