Our experience was beyond excellent. One of the women who spoke the most English took excellent care of me through all of my questions and helped with recommendations. She also introduced us to other excellent choices. When I went back in to buy additional desserts, she sent me out with the most wonderful hot pastry to share with my husband, at no cost. The store itself has many types of foods you cannot find any place else including pork tongue. The ladies were wonderful, the selections were fabulous and the experience, well the experience was amazing! We will definitely stop in the shop anytime that we are in the Utica area. Nearly everything took 20-30 minutes, and we eventually had to flag down staff ourselves to keep things moving. There was also an error with one of our sides, and our appetizer bread only came after we flagged someone down to ask about it. The food was actually quite good and ultimately saved the experience. Highlights were the focaccia bread, crispy fish tacos, and Brussels sprouts. Love that this store has a large selection of Utica food products made by small businesses in the Utica/New Hartford/Rome area. I come when I have not gotten around to making it to the local bakeries before they closed. This time with the Labor Day Holiday the fresh Italian bread selection from our area bakeries was pretty picked over. They usually have several racks of bread from 3 to 5 local bakeries (Big O's, Napoli's, Salvatore's). Chanatry's is known not only for their large selection of local products but also their meat department, deli, and of course the opportunity to get a selfie with the Pope. Service here is very reminiscent of the 50's vibe. Lines are short and move. Baggers are readily available, butcher is available later than other stores. Truly one of my favorite stores.
