Tried pesarattu upma that was launched last weekend. It was very good. I also tried their thali few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had take out and everything was ready and on time. I didn't realize based on online reviews that this place is more of a takeout spot than in person dining and hence I am leaving this review. The inside of this place is very run down/hole in the wall kinda vibe so do not recommend it for in-person dining. Once you sit down , you place your own order using the QR code and then the server brings your order to your table. The girl who got our order, I asked her a question about one of the dishes and she said "I have no idea about the dishes" and left. So definitely not an in person dining place. Enjoyed the thali (traditional South Indian lunch served on a banana leaf) as well as Benne Dosa -- everything was flavorful, fresh & tasty, prepared the "legit" way. You can gauge how good a South Indian restaurant is by its sambar, and man, that sambar was GOOD. The owner is wonderful and makes all guests feel welcomed. Heard that people drive all the way from Cerritos, Riverside etc and we are not surprised; the food is THAT good. Menu is varied and service was very good. We went here for the 1st time(4/18/2026) for dinner. No menus, only order using scanned menu. The place was too cramped. We were seated in a 2 guests table and had the waiter clean the table, it smelled too chemical'ish and the waiter sprayed the cleaner all over the chair and didn't bother. When we went to order and came back, the seat and table was given to another person, so took ourselves to another table. Serving all the tables with 2 waiters is not enough for a Saturday night, and there was barely any space to even leave. Service has to be improved big time. Food was excellent, that's my 3 stars here. I will have to wait a while before I make a next trip, since there is no service. Note to the owner: you need to hire more people to service and also train them. read more

I would give this place a 3.4-4 stars. The interior had a cafeteria-esque environment, with tables and chairs inside. The process of getting your food was unconventional but very easy. You scan a QR code once seated to place your order and then the staff come and hand you your food. We ordered the Rava Dosa and the Gobi Manchurian. The size of each dosa was pretty large, so I would recommend sharing one among two people. I personally liked my dosa and the tomato and coconut chutney that came with it. The sambar was a little spicy, but not too bad. The Gobi Manchurian, however, was too spicy for my taste. read more

The food as always is super delicious. I loved their Vada which is crispy on the outside and super fluffy inside. Their new item Pesarettu (crepe made with ground green mung beans) was super delicious. The sambar always reminds me of of home made sambar with the perfect flavor and blends of the sambar masala. It's a sides-lover's dream! We ordered a Bena (Benne) Masala Dosa and a Regular Thali, and had 15 sides to try mixing and matching with 3 breads and rice. They did a great job curating a diverse arrangement too. It's my first time trying this kind of dosa, and it had an amazing crunch (almost reminds me of griddled cheese) and surprisingly moist, chewy interior. We will be back! read more

I had a very disappointing experience at Kovai Kitchen. I ordered idli and sambar, and while eating, I found a cockroach in the sambar. When I brought it to the server's attention, the response was simply, "Oh, okay," with no apology, concern, or acknowledgment of how serious the situation was. They eventually brought a replacement, but the lack of professionalism and customer service was shocking. To make matters worse, when I politely asked that the item be removed from our bill, I was met with attitude rather than understanding. Finding a cockroach in food is unacceptable, but what made the experience even worse was how casually and dismissively the staff handled it. A sincere apology and basic customer care would have gone a long way. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this restaurant. Poor food safety practices combined with terrible customer service made this one of the worst dining experiences I've had. read more

Went to this place as it is labeled as vegan on yelp - it's vegetarian only. Luckily we asked before ordering and someone came over to help figure out what to order that was vegan. Ambiance is cafeteria style, you sit down at a table, scan a QR code and they call your order as it's ready and you pick it up. The menu right now at least online that you order from isn't very detailed and doesn't label any allergens or vegan options which could be improved. They also don't describe all menu items so unless you are familiar with the cuisine you may not know what is in that dish at all without asking. Maybe they are still working on this as I know they still opened. You need to get your own silverware - they currently have plastic take out style work paper towel style napkins. You then clear your tray with everything take it to the trash. I don't mind doing this but do feel like it wouldn't be that hard for them to bring you your food another 20 feet to your table since they know your table number. We would be in the middle of eating a dosa - sometimes a little messy but delicious and then they would call our number again and we would have to get up. Also no music playing so ambiance was kinda weird. We overheard the table next to us getting frustrated about how long their order was taking. The food we had was delicious we got vada, masala dosa, Onion Tomoto Chilli Uthapam and Thali as we were told these were all vegan. The frustrating thing is when we got our food we got items that didn't look vegan like yogurt - even after talking to the staff and having them help us order. At one point I asked is this white stuff vegan because it doesn't look like it and he said he would ask and let us know and never followed up. So overall I felt like the customer service could be improved. It felt like it was a pop up store vibe at a food event but instead it's in a physical restaurant location which requires a little more in terms of effort in my opinion. Personally I think they could do some things to just make it a little more customer centric and better ambiance. Clearly labeled menu with vegan options or other allergies, play some music, bring the food to the table. To be honest while the food was good not sure I would go out of my way to go back especially for the price compared to the experience. If they had better ambiance more helpful staff and brought the food to you I might not feel like the price it too high but I don't feel like the experience matches what you are paying. read more

I don't know who gave them 4-5 star!!! I ordered door dash: masala dosa. It looked so unappealing; an oothappum stuffed with all of that week's leftovers. Water would have been thicker than the coconut chatney. So did the sambar or whatever you want to call it. No flavor of any kind at all. There was another teaspoon of some sort of other chatney. Could not tell what it was. It looked like 100 years old. I threw the entire thing out. I had great expectations when I realized it is a South Indian place. Usually they are experts in these kinds of food preparations. My friend and I were planning and looking forward to go there. Now I am glad we didn't waste our time and money. Its one of the worst places I have visited. We went there because they had good reviews. But they are offering free dessert in return for the 5 star reviews to customers. So please don't go by those reviews. This is the most dishonest way to get reviews. We were a party of 3 . The food was mediocre. The portions of chutney and sambar served with idli was not enough even for half the idli - such small portions. I ordered the special thali but the thali wasn't as what was promised. The payassam was missing and also no avial was served, which was mentioned on the menu. They did not give any replacement for the missed items but charged full price for the thali. The thali was served on a banana leaf that was directly placed on the serving tray. Ive never seen any place serve food in this disgusting way. The ambience is horrible , even fast food joints are better. Please avoid this place . read more

I was excited to have another good South Indian option in the area other than Nina's. Unfortunately, everything I ordered completely fell short in both taste and value. - Sambar had zero vegetables, not even a piece of onion or tomato in it. Flavor was incredibly bland (maybe due to the dearth of flavor-imparting veggies?). - Rasam was also bland and missing tang. It almost tasted like watered down sambar rather than rasam. - Mango lassi was watery and not packaged well. - Masala dosa did have great texture and was very crispy. We went here on 12/07/2025 around 6.15 pm. The place was 85% full and there were a couple of empty tables. This is a restaurant where you order, and the food is brought out to your table. We stood in line waiting for our order to be taken as there was one more person ahead of us, we had looked at the menu online, so we knew exactly what we wanted. We ordered the Medu Vadas, a Masala dosa, an onion tomato chili uttapam, an Andhra dosa and two filter coffees. The food was brought to our table along with the coffees in about 10 mins, very reasonable wait and service was excellent. We were asked multiple times if we were doing okay and if we needed anything additional. All of the food items we ordered were spot on and we really enjoyed the meal. The Medu Vada was particularly good, and you could tell it was fresh and not refried like you get at some other places. The dosas and the Uttapam were also really savory and tasty. The filter coffee was also very good but we would have liked it to be served in the small steel tumblers (we asked and were told that those would be available soon) so that was great to hear. The pricing was reasonable for the portion size and food quality. Overall, the value excellent for the food. I found out that they had a soft opening the day therefore it was clear that they were still settling in. The staff was working hard to keep things moving smoothly. For a restaurant that has not been open for a long time they definitely hit the mark for the food quality and service. I did not see any menus however and maybe I missed it, but it would be nice to have paper menus available. Once again as I said maybe I missed it. I think once they settle into the business all the areas of improvement will smoothen out. I am definitely going to be visiting this place going forward and it is nice to have another South Indian Food Restaurant in South County and is a fantastic addition to the food scene. We tried the mysore masala dosa. It was really tasty the coconut chutney and sambar was also on point. The filter coffee was disappointing and for the price we got around 3oz of coffee and missed the mark. But still giving the place 5 star for the food. The restaurant does not have an ambiance- it looks like any street side restaurant in India. It does not look very clean but the kitchen is open to public and was satisfactory. If you looking for a quick bite to eat this is a good place. In my opinion, better than Anjappar in Tustin, southern spice in Irvine or anapoorna since they are no fresh and the condiments are watered down. The service interaction was limited. read more

We went there for an overall good experience but was disappointed. To start with, server was not welcoming. Then they have no printed menu, you can scan QR and order and pay first. I hate this post Covid. The ambiance was more like a storage unit than a restaurant. They had boxes of supplies everywhere without any arrangements, so was looking very ugly: Getting water and spoons etc was self serve and they do not tell you till you need one. Restroom faucet did not have water coming! Good solace was food was good, but what they are charging with all above is on higher than that deserve. We are not going there again. read more

I often have mango lassis at Kovai. They are beyond excellent. I tried the butter panner today. While the paneer tasted a day or two old, what bothered me was the fact that there were only two pieces of paneer in my dish. Other than that, the gravy was so very yummy. It's been hard to find truly authentic Indian vegetarian food in SoCal. Unfortunately, places like Anjappar's veg thali didn't work for us, but this small restaurant was a great find. The Tamil Nadu-style thali felt like proper home food -- simple, comforting, and full of flavor. The vada was perfectly crispy and fresh, and the karupatti coffee was a lovely finish.
