Not so Kozy. My wife and I visited this location on a Sunday afternoon to find a road bike for her. She was looking for a good entry-level road bike for her first triathlon. This location had a good selection of bikes of all kinds. We had visited 6 bike shops previously, and Kozy's was our last stop of the day. It was also our least favorite. {sad trombone}. Actually, we didn't even get to talk to a salesperson. It was fairly busy (but not any busier than other shops that day) in there but not one Kozy's staff members said a word to us for the 15 minutes we waited in the front area near the road bikes. We even pulled some out and my wife sat on some bikes. No, they weren't the $3000 bikes. More like the $800-$1000 models. Maybe if we were on the carbon-fiber bikes someone would've come running over quickly? We saw other people in the same boat not getting help either. Maybe they had a bad staffing day or something. Maybe they'd pay attention to us if my wife took the bike outside? We should've tried that but didn't want to risk arrest. Alas, it seemed that they had some bikes my wife would've been interested in, but oh well. Too bad, so sad, Dad. Oh wait, I forgot! Someone did talk to us. After 15 minutes of waiting, we quickly went upstairs to checkout helmets. My wife was goofing around and had a skate/bike style helmet on her head backwards and was laughing about it. Some random salesperson quickly walked by and said "It's on backwards, Hon." Thanks, Captain Obvious. You solved that one! BTW, she loved being called "Hon" by someone that was younger than her and didn't even stop to see if we needed help. Lame-O. In comparison, On The Route on Lawrence was super-helpful and, while being busier (and smaller). The salesperson spent 20-30 min. adjusting a bike for my wife so it felt perfect when she took it for a test ride. That same level of attention and service was experienced at Village Cycle Center. If I could give negative stars, I would. I've gone here a total of three times, each time with a flat. The first, they seemed friendly and did a good, quick job. The second, I went in for a flat and a new rim, and they ended up giving me the opposite rim for the inner tube (a Schrader rim for a presta valve). Needless to say, my valve and my inner tube broke up shortly after that. The final time is what really took the cake for me. Not only had they been condescending, but they gave me the wrong size inner tube. Like, a good 8 inches too long. This particular day, I'd ran upstairs while they fixed my flat and got a few tools. Pretty sure they just used that as an opportunity to f*ck me over again. Don't waste your time with these jerks. read more

Tip: Make sure you get the Groupon to get $80 off an adult bike. This place have a really big collection to match every price range specially with the Groupon promo that they have. They have multiple locations around the city and they can check the inventory if the bike you want in a different size is available at other locations or if you didn't find the brand you want. Just ask!! If you buy a bike the have a warranty for life on the bike and you get 2free fall(October-February) tuning. This place is a hit or miss with the staff( I took a star for this) .. they are all knowledgeable but some of them are rude as hell. It makes you wonder they are giving you the bike for free. And some of them are really friendly I've had both experiences and the first time I really wanted to call the management to deal with one of the salesmen . But, the second time I got someone else who didn't leave me until he made me try more than 3 bikes and made sure I'm comfortable with it. Bad service, don't bother getting any work done here. I paid in full for a new wheel a head of time waited a week and a half, they never bothered to call to tell me it was done. Then when I showed up to pick it up there was a 15 dollar mystery charge for some additional labor they were not up front about. I just stopped in, on my way home from work, intending to try on and purchase some clipless pedals and shoes and checkout cyclocross bikes for purchase in the near future. I can't even say I got poor service, because I got no service, at all. I walked around the store for at least 10 minutes waiting to be greeted, or asked for help, or at least told "I'm with someone else and I'll send someone over, or be with you in a minute." But nope. To be honest I've been looking forward to stopping in for a while now and perhaps the only redeeming quality to my visit was getting to look at some nice bikes, and price check stuff that I'll now probably buy somewhere else. read more

This is their "mega-store" location, and it is huge. 3 floors of bikes and bike stuff. It looks like they're still settling in and it's kind of a mess upstairs. I came in looking for shoes and I believe their non-mega locations had a wider shoe/clothing selection which was very disappointing. I was excited to possibly find a cycling shoe in my size and not 11 and up, but that was not the case. Not to mention since it's a huge store, you have a lot of customers coming in and out, but there were only a couple of salespeople. 3 floors of bikes and parts with only 2 salespeople. We waited close to 30 minutes before someone addressed us and that was mostly because we were heading up an unmarked staircase. I just don't care for that lack of attentiveness. Not even a head nod from someone to let us know we were there. The salesperson once we did get him was knowledgeable and friendly and not at all pushy. He kind of suspected that we were only sizing bikes and not really going to buy one there but he was still polite. A lot of shops would just forget about helping you. Can't say much about the product line as it's the same as every other Kozy's. I do suspect they've hired more youngin's than at the other Kozy's because salespeople aside, everyone looks like they're still in art school. read more

My service at this shop was so bad I actually joined yelp to be able to write this review. After a long stint of not being able to bike I decided to get back in the saddle so to speak. I have had friends who have gone here before and loved it so I thought I would start there by getting a new helmet and talking to them about a seat for my daughter and a tune-up. When someone did finally help me (after about 15min. of looking at helmets in a completely empty store) he asked if I was a recreational biker or not. I replied that I used to bike to work everyday, but not anymore. He then showed me one helmet and said this is the one you want. I asked about some of the others and I got very curt answers and a "well I could show you some others, but they are all going to be more expensive." I was ready to walk right then, but I had bought the living social deal a few months before so I decided to just go ahead and get it. While checking out he answered the phone twice. And then when I tried to ask him his opinion on the different seat options for a child he didn't even let me finish my question before answering in a very condescending manner. And it was not even the answer to the question I was asking. I had very similar condescending and uninterested response from two other employees when I tried to talk to them about a tune-up, but I won't both to reiterate how poorly I was treated. It was probably about the worst 30min. of shopping that I have ever had to endure. If I could I would give this place zero stars and I will never return to this shop. read more

This place is huge and has a large selection of bikes, but, a sub-par selection of accessories. The staff seemed a little disinterested, but, on the other hand I didn't really feel any pressure to buy something since no one was standing over my shoulder. My boyfriend and I went here because we needed bike mounts to fit fit the rack on his car. One of the Kozy guys went out, looked at the car and the rack, and assured us that the mounts we were purchasing would fit. He failed to mention though, that we needed some sort of accessory pack (sold separately, and not available at this location) to actually put it on the car. Kind of annoying, considering we were leaving on a bike trip in less than 36 hours. However, we did call Kozy the next day and they called their distributor, who helped us locate what we needed at a different store. Which was nice, but it would have been a lot more helpful had we just known what we needed when we bought it. read more

I purchased a bike here yesterday and was all around pleased with the experience. I wouldn't say they were bend over backwards friendly, but I came in with an idea about what I wanted and they were able to provide me with it. I love that they have an indoor area to test ride a bike. I was able to try a couple of models and narrow down what I needed. They have a great selection of all sorts of bikes which was nice since I could make comparisons. The service tech (Vlad) was really amazing. He spent a lot of time tuning up my new bike and talking to me about care and things to expect in the early rides. They also offer 2 free fall tuneups and free adjustments for the first year. He spent a good about of time talking to me about my trigger gears since they are different than what I previously had. I think it would be a hard place to go if you know nothing about cycling. I went in knowing just a little and that really helped narrowing down the purchasing process. read more

Great selection of bikes and accessories! This store has anything you might need for biking. They have an indoor track upstairs that you can test ride any bikes you like on. (That is my favorite part of the store! It lets you get a feel for any differences between bikes that you might be debating about). 70 dollar tune up is pretty standard around here, but I better get what I paid for! I dropped off my bike and specifically asked if they can be sure to "true the rear wheel." I picked up the bike and asked if they got the wheel trued and the guy looked startled and thought for a second and said something like "uh yep, did the best I could but at some point you just gotta give up and get a new one." - Guarantee he didn't even look at it. After they tried to charge me twice for the grip (luckily I caught it) I took it outside for a test ride and - no lie - The rear wheel came off... the jerk! I was so annoyed, I just left. Later noticed all the gunk still in the chain. Next day I went to Lakeshore Bikes (where they do a bang up service for 40 bucks while you wait). The owner was amused at my story and guessed which shop without me saying it. Trued my wheel for free and gave me a good deal on a part, and offered my girl a nice bike for a great price. Only reason Kozy's gets the second star is all the employees are very helpful and friendly and they have a big shop with a nice selection. Maybe I just got unlucky, but I'm not going back to find out if it was an isolated incident. read more

This used to be a local shop that I held in high esteem. I initially came to them because of their wide product catalog as well as their knowledgeable technicians. While their catalog remains impressive, their customer service has gone downhill to such a point that I must find a new shop. One of the mechanics refused to service an e-bike I brought in today. The bike, while unconventional in its shape (it's a moped style but conforms to the legal limits of electric bicycles in the United States), is an e-bike with a top throttle speed of 20.6 miles per hour. It's a heavy bike but it's also well-built. I'm having rear brake issues and they told me that they won't work on it as they believe it can go faster than what I told them. Um....ok.... I'm sure if you figured out how to deregulate the bike somehow that it could go faster (and probably burn the motor out) but I don't know how to do that. I'm a straight-forward person who expects nothing more than straight-forward service and a friendly attitude. This bike was meant to be a mode of transportation for me and this was my trusted bike shop that I purchased over $5,000 worth of e-bikes from in the recent past. The moped/e-bike I brought in today was truly just that...an e-bike in need of some rear brake work. The mechanic lifted the rear tire and hit the throttle. Without any weight, it showed 25-26 mph. My Pedego Latch that I purchased from them does the exact same thing. With no weight on the bike, the registered speed will show a higher number than if you were riding the bike yourself with your own weight on it. It's clear they didn't want my continued business and that's a shame. I'm hoping other smaller bike stores might be able to help me out better than Kozy's did. UPDATE TO THE REVIEW: Mr. Kozy - I sincerely appreciate you responding to my review and in a timely manner. There are some factual inconsistencies with your response. I spoke with the mechanic at the store today when he refused service and his exact words were, "This thing goes faster than what you're saying. I'm not working on it because of the liability." Once again, the bike is programmed to only do 20 miles per hour. This was a matter of him not wanting to work on the bike and that came from him directly over our 3 minute conversation. Most of the parts are the same parts (the wear & tear items) that you use on almost all of your other bikes (Tektro brakes, Shimano brand, etc.). This specific e-bike uses the most common parts on purpose. You've covered yourself with a blanket statement buried in your website somewhere that says you can refuse service to anyone but if you're going to pretend that it's because you don't have access to parts, please don't. The two other bikes I bought from you use the exact same brand and type of parts! All I needed was a brake adjustment and a basic tune-up. I stand by what I said before. That's no way to deal with loyal customers looking to give you more business and spend more money at your store. read more

All this burrata has left me a little... well... let's just say I feel like I'm pretty firmly in the clutches of Winterbody right now. Thanks to some birthday/Christmas money, I can combat the cheese weight. After poking around online, and deciding I couldn't wait for Amazon to deliver, I found a bike trainer in stock here. The staff was a bit brusque, not rude, but not super friendly either. Perhaps I am being a crabapple because they wouldn't price match Amazon whose price was comparable to a number of other retailers, just not in Chicago. The guy did call Sports Authority and I ended up saving $10, but it still wasn't what SA had listed when I did my web search, which I felt weird about. God, when did I become such a haggler? I realize that I sound like a cheap, cranky bastard, but I feel that some of the stuff here is above the general market price. Otherwise, the selection is pretty extensive, and I like that the website will help you locate an item at one of their several stores. This store's set up isn't as nice as the South Loop one, but they have a parking lot, and they are across the street from Wally's, so reward yourself with some pickles after you buy some bike gear. read more

This is a beautiful new store and i am glad they rehabbed an older building, especially in this neighborhood. The selection is great and they have a broad range of bikes on three floors. It is a blessing to have such a specialized store this far north and west. When i walked in, it was hard to tell who was even working there. No one talked to me and the people sitting around the computers looked like they just rolled in off the street. No one said anything to me for the 20 minutes i was there and when i finally did ask a question it was like pulling teeth to get clarification or suggestions about the type of bike i was looking for. I think the Webster Place Kozy is really great but this location has yet to get itself into gear (honestly, truly, no pun intended). While the selection is good, they are going to find themselves losing business to the far more helpful bike stores like Rudy's, Get A Grip, and Boulevard Bikes, unless they start acting like the chain (again, no pun, please) that they represent. I stopped in to Kozy's today to get an estimate on what it would take to get my bicycle up and running again after TEN years! Scott in the service department was awesome. I appreciated his extra courteous customer service by actually coming out to the parking lot to help me get my poor old bicycle out of my van and likewise, when I was leaving, he put it back in for me. While assessing my bicycle, he explained exactly what he was looking at and whether or not the parts needed replacing. Although pretty much everything he said went over my head (I only ride bicycles!) I appreciated that he took the time to explain what he was doing and what actually needed replacing. He did not try to upsell me on anything and in fact, I chose to get new tires even though he told me that the existing tires would be fine for a little more riding. I could not believe that I did not need more work on my bicycle than I actually did after all that time. I truly could have been cheated by a suave schiester but Scott really did right by me.. Yay, Scott! Additionally, another gentleman (sorry, I did not catch his name!) helped me pick out a new seat, helmut and misc accessories and was very patient with all of my questions. I will definitely be true to Kozy for all my biking needs in the future. P.S. I already took the bike for a spin and it is riding great! read more

These people are NOT out for your money. I went in recently and told them that the bike I had purchased for them 3.5 years ago had had a bad winter, and I would be buying another bike. Several people there gave me a few very polite and frank talks -- and much needed, might I add! -- about the importance of maintenance of my bike - something I haven't done well with my bike and other material things in my life due to being an admittedly unbalanced person. They really pushed me to keep my bike in good condition and gave me advice on good upkeep. They could easily view me as a reliable source of new sales around every presidential election, but all around from everyone there, I got input to not become that. These guys are great; I've been a very satisfied customer for 5+ years now. read more

I decided i wanted an Electra townie and went shopping for one today. Little did i know there was a global shortage on bikes. After visiting one bike shop and talking to several others we were told the earliest delivery date was the end of June and most said between September and November. We finally called kozy's where we spoke with an extremely helpful woman named Ellen. She said they have one in a box and if we wanted it we could put down a deposit and it would take a day to assemble. I wanted to see the color in person so we said we'd be there in about ten minutes. Traffic was bad so it took us about 20 minutes to get there. When we arrived it turned out the mechanic had just finished putting it together. Ellen showed me the bike, I said I'll take it and we were done with the transaction in 15 minutes. Ellen was super helpful and knowledgable and the whole staff was exemplary. Alright, this review pretty much combines what several other people have already pointed out. I just bought a bike from here and I'm extremely satisfied with it. As one person pointed I went with something in mind and came out with what I was looking for. The floor person showed me some models that I'd be interested in, based on my experience, the type of riding I'd be doing and what I wanted. What I liked most is that he showed me the lowest price one and the most bang for back up to what I told my spending limit was. After taking a two of them for a test ride around the neighbor hood I went for the one I wanted. No pushing or shoving to get a more expensive bike which is what I really liked. What I wasn't to thrilled about is the maintenance guys. I'm sure they know what there doing but they don't know the prices, so make sure you know what your getting. Also there prices seem to be a little steep so other then the warranty service I have on my bike, I'm probably going to find a different place to go get maintenance. 5 stars for the floor service; and 2 stars for maintenance read more

They are always thorough in their inspections, meticulous in their installations and kind to my pocketbook. Kozy's doesn't stock many parts, but they know how to listen to their customers, provide solutions that match your budget and send you out the door in a timely fashion. Check out their Extended Service Contract if you're a regular Chicago area rider. Well worth the money ($39.99 per year for a used bike, $59.99 for 2 or $79.99 for 3 years) and membership includes one free tune up each year, free labor for tires & tubes and all adjustments. read more

I went in to get some new brake/gear shift cables for an old Schwinn Suburban I picked up. Stupid me didn't bother removing the old worn out cables to bring them with, thinking the people at Kozy's would know what fits the bike. I mean, there's only about a million of them locked up on Milwaukee Avenue between Division and Belmont, right? They've had to have seen plenty of these bikes in for service, right?? The guy at the counter could not have been less helpful. He didn't even seem interested in being helpful. It was like I was insulting him by asking him to know which of the two cable types they carried, would fit the bike. Maybe he thinks we should all be riding fancy Italian made racing bikes... I dunno. I thought about coming back after removing the part, but my neighbor recommended International Bike on North Avenue. I was able to walk in and get the right cables for the bike without any attitude. Oh, and the prices were significantly lower. Kozy's might be a good place to buy a new bike. They seem to have a huge stock and decent prices, but I wouldn't go for parts or service. read more

Took my bike in for a complimentary safety check, which was included with the Urban Assualt race registration. A maintenance tech was finishing up on a bike when my wife and I walked in. He took my bike and quoted me 15 minutes. We wandered around the store, asking an employee where a certain part was. He showed us the part and explained the pros and cons of it - but never pushed the sale on us. After about 20 minutes we went back down, and my bike was done. He took up some of the chain slack, and said everything else was good to go. While loading my bike up into our car in the adjacent (and free!) parking lot, I noticed he crimped the end of the brake lines (which I didn't do when redoing my brakes cuz I couldn't find my crimping tool). I was on a mission to get an Ebikes which was quite expensive for my blood, and was having a hard time finding one locally. I was making a trip through the Chicago area ( I'm from NY) and found one there so on a stretch I called them and asked them if I bought the bike if they could bring it to the nearest truck stop for me (I drive tractor trailers). The were more than willing to accommodate me which I didn't honestly think they were going to do as the trick stop was about an hour away from them with traffic. Next thing I knew, Jim Cozy (one of the owners I'm assuming), was delivering it to me, well before their business hours. And when I offered him some money for his troubles, he refused. I love my bike and wish they were my local bike shop as I certainly would return. read more

Actually I can't believe I still go there after this rude salesman George looks the other way when I walk in the store and apparently recognizes my voice when I call there for a question. WTF did I ever do to him? I didn't see him there the last time I went there 2 weeks ago & maybe the owner got smart and realized he wasn't good for the business. However, I really want to get into biking around the city to save money, time, and get some exercise. I went into Kozy's just to see what was around and get some recommendations for a good bike to get started on. I was pretty intimidated, but the staff was completely friendly and helpful. I had a long conversation with one guy (his name is pronounced MAH-chay... no idea how to spell it, sorry man!) about what I should be looking for. I am looking to purchase a bike that is on their website....of course, they don't have it :( This store is on 4 separate levels. Kind of a mix of different bikes....doesn't seem like there is any rhyme or reason to their display of the bikes. It does not seem very organized...and if you go during the day the bikes lined up in the window are hard to see because of the sun. The employees working did not seem that eager to help me find my bike. I was ready to test ride and everything, but that did not happen. I had to ask questions to get any type of answer, nothing was really offered readily. I think I might go to another store a little further away because their customer service on the phone was better than what I experienced in person at this location. After a bad experience at Kozys on Halsted, i have been contacted by Ava, the manager at the Milwaukee Ave. location. She offered to fix the problem and has been super helpful. I brought my bike and they got it ready when I needed it. I visited the store and it is huge. They have a nice selection, proces are ok. Quick and nice, all I needed. Unfortunately the location is 6 miles from where I live but I certainly recommend them for anything you need. read more

I have not ridden a bike since 1995, but I have been motivated to buy one since moving to Chicago. I went to Kozy's because I bought a Youswoop deal $50 for $100. I walked in and went through all the floors and several sales people asked if I needed help and I said, "I'm just looking." and they didn't bother me! It was terrific. Finally, I found a bike I really liked and the sales associate was easy to approach. He asked me questions and pointed me in the right direction. Finally I got a Specialized bike that they let me test ride. I rode around the store and the sales associate adjusted my seat, explained the gears etc... He also talked me out of buying a Cannondale that was $200 more expensive. Using the Youswoop was very easy and efficient and the associate was nice enough to check if there was a sale coming up so I could get it cheaper. I found the sales approach endearing since they weren't trying to make a sale, but trying to offer good customer service. Once I decided to purchase the bike, they took it to the service department and spent 20 minutes making sure there were no issues. I will definitely be returning for any future bike needs! read more

After many years living in Chicago and relying on my own feet and the CTA to get around, I decided to take the next step as a grown-up and buy a bicycle for short distance riding. I know nothing about bikes and haven't been on one for about 20 years, and I wasn't even very good at it then. I dragged a more knowledgeable friend along with me, and off we went to face walls of bicycles. George immediately stepped in, asked a series of questions about what I'd be using the bike for, and proceeded to help me find exactly what I needed. He was very patient with explaining everything to me, and once he saw that I seriously had no clue what I was doing, went above and beyond to get me comfortable on the bike. I felt bad taking up so much of his time, but he really made sure that we found the right bike for my needs and experience, or lack thereof. I ended up coming out with a bike that I'm pretty sure I'll love, and tons of tips and tricks and at least a little bit of riding confidence. The guys who did the tune-up for my bike after I bought it were also super helpful, as well, with recommendations on other accessories I will need down the road, and with making sure that I knew how to work the quick release wheel, locks, basket, etc. I was very pleased all around with the service and will be glad to take the bike back for tune-ups or whatever work needs done in the future. read more

Had a GREAT bike-shopping experience here. Review is for the buying experience only. Will revisit my review for the mechanic-side of the house when I bring my bike back for a tune-up. I'm no speedy triathlete in training, just average girl looking for a hybrid to take around the city and rides along the lake. Oh, and I'm pretty vertically challenged (sub-five ft) and tried a few bikes before going to Kozy's but none fit quite "right." The sales guy (Seymack I think?) was terrific - listened to how I wanted to use it, my intended price range and pulled half a dozen bikes for me to try out. Wasn't pushy or try to upsell me. Much appreciated! He also watched me ride a few of the bikes, suggesting alternatives and making adjustments. Thought it was really nice that Kozy's allows you to trial ride their bikes (either outside or on their top floor) before purchase. Bikes in the same size didn't feel that different just sitting on them but boy, oh boy did it make a difference when riding them. Pros: - Wide # of manufacturers carried (Cannondale, Specialized, Jamis, etc) not limited to just 1 like other dealers in the city - Try before you buy - Not pushy Cons: - As others noted it's little big which can make it hard to get service... But flagging someone down worked for us. All in all, in and out in a little over an hour with a bike that felt great, was in my budget and had been tuned up by their mechanics.
