I have bought 4 bikes there now. Actually I can't believe I still go there after this rude salesman George looks the other way when I walk in the store and apparently recognizes my voice when I call there for a question. WTF did I ever do to him? I didn't see him there the last time I went there 2 weeks ago & maybe the owner got smart and realized he wasn't good for the business. It's a decent store & the prices are very competitive, I just hope they realize that people like him that have an attitude are bad for the business. If you only do one thing you're more likely to get it right. I was a little intimidated going in here, even though several friends suggested it. I was looking to get a bike at the start of the summer to go riding with my friends. The last time I had ridden a bike was a day trip in Munich 9 years ago, and before that it had probably been another 10-12 years (something involving a Huffy I'm sure). So probably two decades sans bike riding save for one brief drunken 4 hour shenanigan. And here I am going into a store full of people that do nothing BUT bikes? Uggggghhhhh... I felt like a yuppy walking up to a bunch of surf nazis and asking for lessons. Fortunately, the sales staff was very helpful. The salesman that helped me listened to my experience and expected use and showed me a couple styles. To his credit he also showed me the lower price tier, didn't try to upsell me on anything I wouldn't need. I got to kinda try the bikes out by sitting on them and pedalling up the aisle a bit. After finding a bike that "just felt right", they included a servicing to make sure it was in tip top shape before going out the door and I've got some free maintenance trips to my account as well. If you're not looking for a new bike, they have tons of equipment and the staff is helpful without being pushy. I will definitely be coming back. read more

This place is about a mile from our house which is handy when one of our bikes has a flat or something. I went here for the first time last year when my tire had a slow leak and my bike just seemed wobbly- for about $12 they fixed up the tire and also secured some pieces on the back end that weren't tightened the way they were supposed to be. I was a little intimidated because I don't know much about bikes and the repair guy was a little brusque. Today we went in to get hubs flat tire fixed, and the staff was more friendly and helpful than last time. It was $6 for a new tube and $12 for them to install it. We had a groupon. I also brought in this helmet I had ordered online (not from Kozy) but felt didn't fit quite right. The guy at the counter was helpful and assured me it did appear to fit correctly. Generally the staff seems pretty helpful and knowledgeable, and the bike services are decently priced, however I don't think their other merchandise are very competitively priced. read more

I came here yesterday for a rear view mirror and ended up buying a giant escape bike. When I first came in I was immediately greeted and asked if I was instructed to go upstairs and that someone was going to be waiting for me to help me. Needless to say, there was a guy which name I don't remember (it starts with a "S"). He was extremely helpful and very informative. He immediately walked me through the instructions on how to assemble the mirror and that's when I asked him about the bikes. I told him I had bought a bike at Kmart a week ago and that I started commuting to work. I explained that I felt that my current bike was too much of a cruiser vs a commuter bike. I asked him if they had anything for the price range I was looking for. He was very polite at all times, not pushy nor trying to win a sale. He gave me a few options, I felt in love with the bike I bought. Before buying it, I thought it throughout, It was a bit more than I could afford so I told him I was going to think about it. I went downstairs and paid for the mirror and the bike was waiting downstairs as he had taken it there in case I wanted to test drive it. I told him that I wasn't going to since I didn't have the money for it. He didn't show any discontent. After talking to my husband and making a few adjustments to our budget I was back at the store within an hour. A lady greeted me this time, very polite as well. The guy that helped me before was there too, he got the bike and prep it for a test drive. Afterwards, he tuned it up and made sure the bike was the proper fit. He taught me how to take off my front wheel and how to properly lock it... that was a PLUS! OverALL, I had a great experience here. They have TONS of bikes and accessories, I felt like I was in bikeland!!! They also have a shop for services right next door. read more

I have to let everyone know how great the mechanics Matt and Chris are. My 23 year-old niece was in a bike accident at 7 pm. She was ok, but she uses her bike for work, and it took a beating in the accident. By the time I picked her up from the scene, it was past 7:30 and Kozy was closing at 8. When we got there, Chris and Matt first made sure that my niece was ok, and then they stopped whatever they were doing and started working on her bike immediately. They even gave her some superglue to fix a personal item that broke in the crash. Amazing customer service!! Then Chris and Matt did what they could to salvage her bike and get it into a condition she can ride for a few weeks so she doesn't miss work and can get a new bike. I've always heard great things but after a couple small visits and one recent repair, I just can't seem to understand the hype. On numerous visits, the salesman (maybe manager) George, has never once been inviting, but routinely rude. When I asked George where the tubes were he said by the shop. Apparently the size I told him didn't make any sense to him--I've always bought tubes the exact the way I said. Instead of trying to explain so I could better understand, he was just rude and condescending. Later, waiting for my bike, George walked into the shop full on swearing up a storm about someone he just talked to on the phone. Dropping f-bombs within ear shot of me. Super unprofessional. Then there was the repair. So I went in and said I wanted a new chain and install, said I needed rear hub nuts replaced because they had gotten stripped, said things just felt "off" and lastly asked for a wash. The mechanic said he could do the chain, looked at the hub nuts and kept commenting how they looked really bad. I know, I told you... that's why I asked to get them replaced. He said he couldn't do the wash today. Ok... I get my bike back and when I rode off, it feels worse. The chain is making a loud sound when at lower speeds, I feel a lot of feedback/vibration from the rear into the saddle. After being annoyed with Kozy, I pull over and lookup the next closest bike shop, which was Boulevard Bikes. I walked in and was greeted warmly. I told them the chain was making noise and mentioned to him as well that something just felt "off." Also said I wanted a wash. They took a look for 30 seconds and said the vibration in the rear was because my ball bearings needed replacing. He later showed me mine (off the bike) and new ones to see (and hear) the difference. I LOVE places that do this. I learn by seeing and touch. They also adjusted my headset, wiped it down, lubed pivots, and cleaned c ring all for free. They called me just before pickup time and said my freewheel cassette was badly worn and it would likely break the chain. He asked if I wanted to switch to fixed side or have it replaced. Didn't pressure me, just gave me information. I asked to replace it. He later showed me that too and the grooves were literally shaped like a hook instead of straight. I just can't believe that Kozy worked on the same areas of the bike-- down by the hub and didn't see or say anything about the worn bearings. They installed a new chain but didn't see/say anything about the ACS freewheel being so worn it would likely destroy my (new) chain. Couldn't wipe it down or lube anything up... I ended up giving Boulevard over a $100 in parts/labor. Happily. Kozy missed out on all of that by not being attentive or caring. Why let a customer walk in with a bike and let them walk out with it no real better condition? read more

This a great bike store. I went here the other day and I loved how they complimented my awesome vintage bike as I walked in the door. They helped me find the right lock and also installed it. Went there over the weekend to replace my old bike which was stolen last week (yarr!). Impressive selection of bikes, better than most places I've been too over the last few days. The staff was very knowledgeable too. I was torn between another Hybrid or a Road Bike. After explaining my needs and current riding type to one of the employees he was able to help pick out a nice Cannondale Hybrid that fit the bill. After a quick test ride on their indoor track followed by a fitting I was off with my new bike. Very happy with the experience and will definitely go back for any future bike needs. (PS. I went to Kozy's and brought in an old bike for repair. Brian gave me a quote over the phone and it came out much cheaper than other store's like Get a Grip (closer to me). I brought it in and the repair was done within 45min for the quoted amount. I ended up buying a new bike the same day after coming home to print off some coupons from their website (10% off bike purchase and a free lock with bike purchase). I was surprised that the sales guy and gal wouldn't throw in a water bottle with with the Kozy's logo with the purchase of the bike and accessories I bought when I asked. No discounts given on accessories and they only gave $10 toward a different lock when I wanted to upgrade from the free cheap-o (retail $22). Sales staff kinda nickel and dimed me but got a great price and good service from Brian and Keith when I came in to pick the bike up today. read more

I was looking for a 16" bmx bike for my nephew. After finding Kozy's online, I went to their N. Milwaukee Ave. store ready to buy. I'm happy to say that I walked out a very happy, and soon to be repeat customer. I found everyone I encountered, especially the assembler Lodi, I believe was his name, to be extremely helpful, courteous and very knowledgeable. I've bought two bikes from Kozy's. Both were amazing deals priced every bit as competitively as any online distributor. But bikes bought at Kozy's come with free adjustments for the first year--the value of which cannot be overstated. Cables stretch. You'll need a mechanic to figure out what that rattling sound is and fix it--and Matt at the Milwaukee location is the best mechanic I've ever met. I was a mechanic myself in school and have ridden bikes consistently for 25 years. Matt is fast, knows his craft, and is very pleasant to work with. That combination is hard to come by and I actually travel miles out of my way to go to him for all of my cycling needs. read more

Pleasant surprise! My expectations were exceeded. Although this shop is close to home, I was avoiding it because they put a really annoying hard sales pitch on my boyfriend recently. But I needed repairs at 5:30 PM on Critical Mass day, and my usual shops were closed already. The front desk staff didn't get snobby about my ancient 3-speed, but cheerfully directed me to the service department. The friendly mechanic took the time to explain what was wrong with my bike and offer options for repairs. My bike was fixed up and ready to ride less than 20 minutes after I arrived. I had a frightening experience with an abusive manager at the bike shop. I went in to the Halsted for a pretty simple repair (broken spoke) and received a bike back that had a rear tire that was quite overinflated. A day or so later, the tire blew out when it was just standing in my apartment. I called up the shop and explained what had happened. Before I could ask about a potential fix, the manager, Aaron, began having a very intense tantrum. He insisted that all tires are always inflated at their store to the proper PSI, without exception. He attempted to blame the blowout on "something that happened on your way home," which doesn't make logical sense. He then accused me of creating a situation in my home that blew out the tire, saying outright, "This is your fault." I was taken aback and asked him to change the way he was speaking to me, and he launched into a rant that included several ad hominem attacks on me, including calling me "irrational." I asked to speak to a manager or whoever his boss was, and he said he was the boss and the only person I could speak to. He also became more agitated, continued berating me, and then hung up on me. By the end of the call, the verbal abuse was so intense I was physically shaking. It was more intense abuse than I've ever gotten from any employee of any store anywhere. I phoned the other stores and eventually spoke to someone who gave me the email of the owner, Paul Kozy. I emailed him explaining what had happened and asking if Aaron might be having a mental health emergency, since this outburst seemed so intense and unwarranted. I got back an email a day later saying Aaron's behavior was "unacceptable," and adding, "I would assume that Aaron brought some outside hostilities into the job that day," but also brushing off the incident with "you two really got off on the wrong foot" and "all sorts of crazy things happen." The only way he'll be addressing Aaron, he said, was "putting this in his file." He invited me to go back to the shop for further repairs, but I'm too afraid for my safety at the Halsted shop to go there (and I can't easily reach their other store). This experience seems to resonate with a string of poor reviews about how rude the employees at this store can be. To be honest, if I knew a friend who wanted to go there as a new customer, I would warn them out of concern for their safety. I also cannot rate the quality of the repair highly, since it led to complications. (I didn't feel comfortable reengaging with Paul Kozy's attempts to provide further repairs.) So taking the risk and going there might not lead to a good result. TL;DR: For your own well-being, avoid this abusive environment and go somewhere else. read more

I've been in the store 4 times now. I've never had good service. There are long waits to speak to a person, even if you're literally the only person in the store. They're more concerned with doing other work than they are with helping people. I bought a pricey Cannondale here last summer. When they sell you a bike, they promise that you get a free tune-up if you bring it in between October 1 and March 1. When I bought it, the guy running the repair part of the store (I think Vlad, it's what I wrote on my receipt) told me flat out that it wouldn't be a problem if I brought it in a few weeks after March 1st. They said they'd still honor the free tune-up. I called today (2/28) to see about the tune-up and they said they'd have to keep the bike for 3 days. I asked if I could bring it in the day they'd actually be working on it, since I need it to commute tomorrow. He said not for the free tune up. In short, the staff is rude, they make promises they don't keep, and the prices aren't good enough to make me come back. I'll be paying for my tune-ups and servicing elsewhere and buying parts online. read more

Went to Kozy's this weekend and had a horrible experience with a salesman who is arrogant, impatient, uncommunicative, hostile , and indifferent to any attempts to actualy explain their products. Mind you nobody else was in the store at this time, which seems like a chance for a salesman to spend time to explain and work with a customer on a slow day- which was something we thought would help us in determining which expensive bike to buy; but that isn't the training or mindset of this store. After numerous attempts to get him to reign in his attitude, with statements to him like 'could you explain that in plain language" , " could you back up and explain that again" , " could you highlight the details and explain why this model is more expensive?" All nicely requested, he kept getting more irritated by our requests for info with snippy remarks and more obtuse answers. We grew frustrated with his attitude and told him he was being condescending and unhelpful. At which point he yelled, very close by, and pointed at us and then the he door "Then get out!" To get him to get out of the way and standing over us, so we could leave, we had to grab our kids (yes he did this in front of two kids) and verbally get him to back off...he then backed away so we could get by and leave. First, a salesperson should know the product, he didn't; second he should be able to explain it to anyone; third, not trying to dominate and scare customers is an expected experience; fourth, don't bring your kids here, clearly a hostile place unsuited for families due to employees who have issues. Clearly this business doesn't screen well when hiring, doesn't train, and doesn't supervise employees. I would not recommend this business. In someways this is sad development since this a long time family business that has clearly lost its original vision. read more

Great selection of bikes. What I really appreciated was that even with the crappy weather, I was able to test ride 3 bikes in their upstairs loft area. You can't get up to any kind of speed, but you can get a pretty good idea on the ride and fit of the bikes. The trick -- go before the weather breaks or this place will be packed on weekends. Prices are fair but you can probably do better if you compare other shops. I walked out with a fully fitted and tuned up bike in about an hour. read more

I am completely shocked and disheartened at what happened at Kozy's this past weekend. What was supposed to have been an exciting adventure- buying my 4 year old daughter her first bicycle- turned into a heartbroken child and two parents who were amazed at the lack of courtesy and common sense by the staff at Kozy's. After we purchase her new, pink bike, we got back to our house and noticed that not only were the training wheels assembled improperly, there were burn marks on the handle bars. I couldn't believe a bike was sold to us in such poor condition, so my husband called the shop and was told to bring it back. I decided to return it myself. When I got there, I entered through the service area of the building. I first saw Kevin, the mechanic, who, coincidentally, was the one who assembled the bike. I told him the problem and his reply was a rude "Yes, I know there were problems with the bike." I couldn't believe he said that, so I asked why he didn't alert us to the problems that he noticed. Kevin said nothing about the improperly assembled training wheels, but then said "I tried getting the burn marks off and couldn't, so I just gave it to your husband." I was in complete disbelief over his attitude and the fact that he sold us both a defectively painted bike, but an improperly assembled bicycle that could have caused harm to my daughter. Sayamack Afzali, the assistant manager, was polite and refunded my money, but offered no apologies or explanations as to why this happened. It seems Kozy's is anxious to move product off of the floor, regardless of defects. My intentions were to purchase a different bicycle when I came to Kozy's, but after the attitude I was given by Kevin, I didn't want to do additional business with them and purchased a new (and more expensive bike) elsewhere. I contacted the owner of the shop, per Sayamack's suggestion, but the owner didn't bother responding I was stunned about this and truly hope other kids are not endangered (or heartbroken) by the lack of care and service displayed by their staff. read more

I have been on the hunt for a new bike and have checked out several shops recently, this place has the most terrible customer service by far! I had to wait a long time just for a staff member to tell me to go to the second floor and wait some more for someone to assist me. Once I got by the bikes, I quickly noticed there was only one employee and he was helping a couple who were before me. After several minutes of not being acknowledged by this employee at all, I overheard him tell the couple that today is a busy day and there's people just staring at him rudely to get help. He was definitely talking about me as I was the only other customer around. How rude! I walked right out. This place doesn't deserve my business. Or yours for that matter. I went in to buy straps for toe clips. Waited in the repair area for several minutes until someone behind the counter bothered to look up. Then was told that they don't have any straps. This means either 1) this is a poor repair shop to not carry such a basic item or 2) they didn't want to be bothered with a small purchase. Either way, it was a complete waste of an hour, including driving time. Horrible customer service. I will not be back, and I encourage others to avoid feeling like you are intruding on the workers' personal space. Remember, guys, it's a store! Do you know what a bike snob is? Come here to find one on the Sales side of the experience. The selection of bikes is great ... However, I think they should concentrate on having models and sizes at a few locations rather than strewn all across all of them so the customer does not have to keep track of what bikes are where. I walked in frantically at 8:00 pm thinking I was too late (oh wait - the Erie and South Loop stores close at 8, not this one, so I'm sure I looked aloof but it's hard to remember that for 5+ locations). I spoke to someone on a Friday night who seemed to be discouraged about my desire for several bike brands for a cyclocross ... it seemed that since I didn't do most of my homework on which brand had what model / components / or # of gears, I shouldn't be spoken to. I've never seen a salesman in any industry roll their eyes so much during a product explanation or pitch - I thought he was going to have a seizure. The test ride track on the 3rd floor is cool but you need to do a real road ride to feel the bike. read more

Called them on the 4th of July asking for older model cruiser bikes for my wife. They said they had two types, Townie and Schwin, but a year or two older and on sale. Sherdon quoted us prices and and the colors they had in each and sounded like a great deal. We discussed and then called back to confirm before making the 30 minute drive down there. When we got there, the bikes they did have were different models and over $100 more. Sherdon then tried to push us into other bikes and apologized for the mixup, saying he was busy and wasn't by a computer when he quoted us twice. Totally felt like a 'bait and switch' situation. Ended up going to Village Cycle on Wells and buying there. read more

I go to Kozy's regularly for bike service, and they always provide honest advice about what needs to really be fixed vs. what I can do at home or on my own. I love their service folks. But I also love the shop experience. I have gone to Kozy's for nearly 10 years, going every time my kids need a new bike helmet because they help fit the helmet, which is invaluable to me. They don't try to oversell, and I trust their opinion. I haven't bought a bike from there, preferring used bikes for our use, but trust the service team and shop for bike accessories. read more

More like 0 stars. My husband and I walked in knowing absolutely nothing about bicycles. We just wanted a bike we could take on trails for daily exercise. As soon as we walked into the store, the manager, didn't catch his name.. he was bald and wore glasses, didn't even care to greet us. That sets off a bad vibe right away, makes you feel unwanted in a store of business. We proceeded to show ourselves around the store- since again no help was offered. Finally a young man by the name of Estevan asked us if we were doing okay and gave us some brief information on bikes. He was super helpful and even helped us pick out bikes that we wanted. We asked for some help on the price and he said he had to go speak to his manager. He walked downstairs, and the store is completely open, so we heard everything. He told the bald headed manager that we needed further information on bikes and help with the pricing.. the manager then started screaming at him saying that he doesn't have patience for customers who waste his "precious time".. as soon as he approached us we walked out. Completely unprofessional, we are giving our service to a different bicycle shop. If anyone is looking to shop there I suggest you don't. The service is ridiculous, and coming from a manager? My bike was recently stolen and I went to Kozy's to replace it. I had a bike in mind that they ended up having in stock. It was a super simple transaction with no pushing or up selling. I worked with George and he was crazy helpful and even pointed out that I might be more comfortable on a slightly bigger size. Luckily, they also had that size in stock and I was able to try both. He was totally right and this new bike feels way better. The store has a huge selection of everything and everyone I interacted with was nice. They greet you when you enter but for the most part they leave you alone until you have a question which is the way I prefer it. Totally recommend! read more

Unfortunately, my opinion of Kozy's on Milwaukee has worsened with every visit there. While their initial customer interactions are pleasant and service turn around time fairly quick, it's the little tings that will gnaw at your bum. If you're a savvy shopper, you'll notice their prices are exorbitantly high for most clothing, parts and even bikes. The cycling jersey I (stupidly) bought at Kozy's for $90 (on sale), was less than $50 (with free shipping) through an online retailer. Sure, it's not unexpected for that brick n' mortar prices are going to be higher, after all you get this awesome "customer service" for that extra cost, right? NOPE! Of the two jerseys I bought at Kozy's (same brand, different color) ... I unfortunately didn't realize one was a different size. Due to work travel, I did not have an opportunity to return it immediately... ahem (don't be like me), yeah don't wait, because there's 10 day time limit to return items. In fact just DON'T buy from here to start with and you'll be fine. While the retail aspect is of Kozy's is far from par, it's the service department where I'm drawing the line. Recently (Spring 2018) I had my bike serviced at Kozy's, only to find once home while checking the bike, they did NOT re-tighten all the parts. They also did not note my a few minor things like my wheel needed to be trued and chain replaced. More specifically my BIG ISSUE, the handlebars & stem came loose a block from home while doing a quick test ride after picking it up. Come-on, this is a pretty serious FAIL on your part, which could have resulted in SERIOUS injury and damage. Okay, admittedly, once again I am the idiot for assuming they would complete the service I paid them to do, an idiot for assuming it's unnecessary to have to check a bike you JUST had serviced, an IDIOT for continuing to give them my business... you betcha! The staff response regarding what happened on the phone: "ummmm, yeah bring it back and well check it"... as if they were meticulous the 1st time, yeah, no thanks, I think I'll do it myself. read more

Customer service was great! Did not seem like they just wanted your money! They really just want you to enjoy the bike riding! I came into Kozy's Cyclery with absolutely no knowledge of bikes. I came in determined to get a kids' size bike because I'm five foot one and thought that kids bikes were my only option plus the prices are more in my range. However, after talking to Luis (who is the sales manager) he gave me a lot of information on why a kid's bike wouldn't make my bike riding experience enjoyable. Luis took me to the women's bikes and showed me that there really is a bike for everyone, and adjusted the seat and got me an extra small women's bike. Still, after all his help I was leaning towards the kids' bike..so Luis told me I could test ride both the women's bike and the kid's bike. After riding both bikes I definitely loved the women's bike so much more than the kid's bike; it was like floating while riding! It was so smooth to ride on! When I was riding the kid's bike it was uncomfortable, and my knees were kind of going into my stomach and I was cramped! I love my new bike now, and and so thankful that Luis educated me on bikes and that there is a bike for everyone no matter how tall or short they are! The customer service here is great too! They want you to enjoy bike riding and just want the best for you, it didn't seem like he was just out for your money so give this place a try! read more

I visited the Milwaukee Ave Kozy location based on their online product availability finder (which showed which locations that had specific bikes in stock). When I got there, the salesperson that greeted me was very nice and polite. I was looking for my first road bike. However, when I asked to test ride the bike, he had me go upstairs and ride the bike on this indoor open space (small area, really kind of lame), instead of letting me take the bike outside where testing actually makes a difference. Then after riding around this small indoor space for several laps, he proceed to try to up sell me to a more expensive bike that was clearly too large for me (he said "Oh, that looks great", but I knew better). Needless to say, I left the store thinking to myself that this place is not where I want to buy my bike. The only reason that I didn't rate the Milwaukee Kozy location lower was that I ended up going to the other Kozy location on Halsted and the experience there was totally different. I ended up getting properly fit to the exact bike that I wanted, which I ultimately purchased. My recommendation, do your research beforehand and take whatever the salespeople say at face value. read more

kind of weird experience. I called for a cannonade synapse 2014 that was on sale for 25% off. and they denied having it. I showed up later in the week and i told them that i was looking for a road bike. Talked with George, acted like kind of a psychotic, but overall ok guy. I had to show him online the bike advertised, after he let me road test other bike. and then the cannonade nobody knew... puff...was right there. so i bought a 2014 synapse with 105 and disc brake at a great price...i left with the impression that didn't want hat bike go.... I'm happy with bike/price, i suggest to check their website first for offers, mine was a great deal. read more

Had a very nice experience at Kozy's today. We bought the Groupon for $200 off an adult bike so we could get a gift for our daughter's 16th birthday. Mingas greeted us and was very cordial and helpful without at all being pushy. He explained some of the options available in-store and invited us for a test ride of two of the top contenders. We asked him to recommended helmets and locks and he did so without pressuring us in any way towards the most expensive items (there is quite a range). It's not the fanciest place, but the quality of the service and the assortment of bikes themselves are quite good. Some very high end. You'd be much better off shopping here than at a big box store or Target. Definitely will be back for another bike. read more

Love this place! I always take my bike here for repairs/tune ups. The people are so knowledgeable-- bike gurus. They'll describe your options and share helpful tips. I trust them 100%. When I'm ready for a new bike I will be going here bc I love supporting their store. read more
