Krause's has my heart! This chocolate shop is so cute and has the best chocolates and chocolates for special occasions and holidays, especially with their festive signs too. Most recently got gifted some chocolate peeps which absolutely made my day. This is such a perfect store for gifts and sweet treats so I highly recommend stopping in. They have such high quality chocolates of all different flavors and assortments. It's such a gem in the town of Saugerties. The chocolate here is creative, fabulous and delicious. I'm not sure if the products are made on premises, but whoever is making them has been around the block quite a few times before. My favorites are the dark chocolate "jelly ring" (although it's not a ring, but rather a cube), and the milk chocolate covered pretzels. Both items are simply off the charts good. They have plenty of options for children and adults alike. There is one huge problem though......After tasting a confectionery treat from here, you'll never want to go back to the commercialized garbage you find in most stores. Get here. Try some. Some dessert places are good, and some are stupid good. Krause's is definitely in the latter camp. Located right next to Diamond Mills--and unfortunately for my waist line, down the street from my place--Krause's is arguably the most famous food place in Saugerties. Coming in, the sheer volume of different types of chocolate is impressive; everything is made on premises, including the different seasonal varieties like Easter bunnies. Some things (like giant Easter bunnies the size of a small child) are not all that practical, but you cannot deny that this is all truly cool shit. My favorite thing to get here are the nonpariels, which come in white, milk and dark chocolate. Chocolate covered blueberries, coffee beans and raisins are also solid choices, as are crunchy chocolate pumpkins around Halloween. Everything is reasonably priced, especially when compared to some inferior chocolate places in the tri-state area. Have used these guys for my wedding (variety of chocolate flower pops) and my son's 1st birthday (chocolate Clifford the Big Red Dog's); in both cases they could not have been more professional, and the price was reasonable. They also offer to put bows on/bag things if you wish. From the chocolate to the staff, it's hard to imagine this place being more perfect. People travel for long distances to come here for a reason. Krause's is a childhood favorite of mine and a family tradition around the holidays from growing up in the Hudson Valley. This Christmas I decided to send several boxes as gifts to friends and family that I was unable to see because of the pandemic. They did a fantastic job shipping everything in time for christmas despite what I imagine was probably a high volume of orders. As for the chocolates themselves, you need to try it to fully understand how delicious these are! We stumbled upon this town, and this street while on a pit stop for food on the way back to the city. We were checking out our dining options while the wall art by the shop got my attention. Then we saw the sign outside the shop for handmade chocolates and were intrigued. Of course we went in to check it out. When you walk in, there are small pre-packed half llb baggies of a large variety of candies. From your standard gummy bears, Swedish fish, to not so standard Grapefruit gummies! That got my attention right away. After the candies, there were the same pre-packed chocolate items like chocolate pretzels, almonds, malt balls, etc. But wait, there's more! Then on the other side is more baggies and a whole section of chocolate pieces sold by lb in a case. Any and every variety you can think of in milk and dark chocolate. Even sugar-free options! So they have different box size/weight options for the pieces. They have 1/2 lb box for apx. $8.80 and 1lb box for apx. $16.45 (apx 24 pcs). These are estimated cuz it's by pound, and depends on what you pick. I thought it was really very reasonably price in comparison to what I've seen at other chocolate shops, so I decided to go with a 1 lb box to bring home to my fam. None of us like anything too sweet, so I got dark chocolate everything. From what I remember, I got: espresso truffle, chocolate truffle, orange cream, orange peel, maple cream, crispies, almond, caramel, etc. I've tried some of them and man, are they good! My fave is the crispies. I also got the 1/2 lb bag of dark chocolate pretzels, and grapefruit gummies. Pretzels were excellent. The grapefruit gummies were freakin' amazing!!! If you like grapefruit, you MUST buy this! So unique and delish. Dare I say, possibly better than the chocolates lol. Great product and fair prices. They have so many that you could literally stand infront of the show case and try to decide what to get for 30 min. I always shop at the Saugerties store. One of my favorite things is their chocolate heart box which I fill with chocolates and give as gifts for Valentine's Day. They also mail chocolate, when weather permits. I have had them mail chocolate to my relatives and the chocolate was packed well and arrived on time in perfect condition. If chocolate rules then universe, then this is one of the mother ships. This store might not be as large or as fancy as the store on Central Avenue in Albany, but - walk in, close your eyes, and inhale deeply - would you be able to tell the difference? There are just so many already-delicious things subsequently covered in types of chocolate. They probably have to clean the glass counter in front of all those decadent chocolates and truffles regularly from the drool and fingerprints. You might not find as many boxed sets of chocolates here, but they do have them, and I'm sure whatever isn't packaged is available behind the counter. The other great thing is that there's always a holiday around the corner, and they'll have extra-special candies ready for those too. read more

It was empty when we walked in, so our game plan was to do a walkthrough twice of the entire selection before deciding what to get, otherwise we may have bought everything. After reading all the amazing amazing reviews about Krause's me and my girlfriend decided it was a must try in Saugerties. Coming into it my thought process was "how good can this chocolate be? I'll bet you it's one of those places that rides the hype train" (and boy oh boy I was wrong). Krause's was hands down the best chocolate I have ever had! They have a ton of different options (we're talking all the fixins), all chocolates in milk and dark, cool chocolate cookies in the shape of Star Wars characters (watch out parents, your children will 100% want to buy these... or you'll want to buy them yourselves!), the entire staff was so nice and helped us pick out the perfect chocolates, and the individual chocolates didn't break the bank! I would recommend anyone going here if you are in Saugerties, also the hotel next to it has a beautiful waterfall that is the perfect compliment to any chocolate. So yeah... Go here! read more

In an age in which chocolate is being reinvented as an existential sociopolitical experience, Krause's remembers that chocolate is above all - candy. Finally made it out to the Saugerties mothership after fleeting samples and descriptions of chocolate over the past three years. I knew what I wanted, and they did not disappoint. The dark chocolate covered ginger is amazing, sophisticated, and certainly a snack for any occasion. Similarly, chocolate-covered orange peels were as excellent as billed. Of note, this dark chocolate isn't the 90% cacao, bitter adventures that is now becoming upper crust chocolate. Instead, it's pretty sweet - Hershey's sweet - and is hell-bent upon melting in the hands (and steering wheel and necktie). Kudos to the staff for putting together a seven-pound custom order right before a holiday weekend on a day's notice. Additionally, the availability of chocolate-covered frozen bananas (there's always money in the banana stand) makes a visit doubly worthwhile. Chocolate was meant to taste good. So many delightful and decadent concoctions to choose from. Whenever my mom and i would head up to Saugerties, we would always stop by Krause's. It's an old-fashioned kinda shop, not gonna get any crazy modern attempts at candy making. The place feels like Santa's Workshop. Everything is so yummy, they have all different kinds of home-made candy. From what i remember i believe they have a decent sugar free selection as well. hands down the BEST fruit slices on the planet. They are all made with real fruit and they taste like it. The grapefruit are the best but I am also addicted to the watermelon flavor. I shied away from them at first because artificial watermelon is the worst but these taste like biting into a fresh piece of melon. Where else can you get flavors like blueberry and raspberry fruit slices? The chocolate covered marzipan is to die for too. I'm sure everything else is just as delicious but every time I go, I stick to my favorites. My husband and I were celebrating my birthday in New Paltz and found the new Krause's Homemade Candy satelite store. They are still making the candies in Saugerties. This new store was only three days old and they were still hanging up shelves. But that didn't deter me from trying some of the chocolate. I tried the sea salt caramels, the sponge candy and I can honestly say that they were the most delicious chocolate that I have ever had!
