Words cannot describe how absolutely amazing this restaurant is in every aspect!! My husband,…read moredaughter and I live in Charlotte (northeast) and ended up at BearWalrus while taking a trip to Miracle Park. We are unfamiliar with Rock Hill and while at the park, hubs googled RESTAURANTS NEAR ME and this one came up and ... OMGOODNESS!!! We went back 3 days later to enjoy again. Nothing in Charlotte even comes close!!!

Inconsistency was the theme of our recent dinner at BearWalrus. Disappointing, and yet hopeful,…read morebecause with some attention to detail this could become a great addition to the Rock Hill restaurant scene, As we sat our server did an excellent job explaining the menu. However, she then disappeared. Well, not disappeared, we could clearly see her at a table talking, and talking, with another couple. 15 minutes later we still hungrily (and thirstily) sat waiting to place our order. The service unfortunately remained unsteady throughout the evening. My wife and I love properly barbecued brisket. (Key mention, I lived in Texas many years and my wife grew up in Houston. We've taken vacations visiting Texan barbecue joints. Admittedly, we're "brisket snobs". ). Brisket is a tough cut of meat and aside from lots of loving time and attention it requires fat. Fat provides tenderness, moistness and most importantly flavor. When asked, ALWAYS order fatty brisket, not lean. Of the three slices of brisket we received, one was delicious, it all but fell apart with a fork. Another was partly good but the third slice was clearly overly lean; it was dry, tough and, in our view, not worth eating. So again, inconsistencies. We had a dozen oysters, four each of Good (from Virginia), Awesome (PEI) and Baller (Washington). The descriptions should've been switched. The large Chesapeake oysters were the best. They had a buttery finish - I enjoyed them. Meanwhile the Pacific oysters were very briny and one tasted of fish; after that I didn't touch the remainder . (I'm fine, by the way, no after-meal ill effects). I now suspect the price points for the oysters have less to do with quality and more with shipping costs. My advice, support our local, and delicious, fisheries. We ordered hushpuppies for starters and they arrived a dark, dark brown in color. The table next to us received the same so we first told ourselves that was perhaps how they were served here. However, we then saw other table servings and realized ours were burnt. The manager comped us for these (we had only eaten one). Of the four sides we had, the Cole slaw and onion rings were good but the Cowboy beans overly sweet and the Mac N Cheese was bland and lacked seasoning. BearWalrus is new, clearly still working out a few kinks. There were enough positives in our meal that I'm optimistic that this unevenness in quality will be ironed out in due course.

The menu is fairly deep and wide. Obviously, with the name of the restaurant, they offer a good variety of seafood options. Their specials for the evening both were seafood. Like the last time here they recommended the Chilean Seabass. What a shock, it's the most expensive item on the menu. Three people got it, they all said it was OK to good. I ordered the blackened mahi-mahi. By the description, it sounded good, I've had it other places, I've enjoyed it. Well, there's always a first time that it wasn't very good. That bs this time. To start, the portion size is decent. I understand we were a fairly large group, but they need to figure out a way to bring the food out at least warm. The most disappointing part of the fish was how dry it was. The second most disappointing part about the fish was how it lacked blackened seasoning. One other person also got the same menu item and had the exact same comments. I did start out with a side salad and it was acceptable. The lettuce was not too flimsy. It included goat cheese and candied pecans. Their house dressing, which was a vinaigrette, tasted bitter. We ordered five different appetizers. No super compliments on the any of them. I didn't try them all. I did try the crab cakes, they seemed to be missing crab. I paid the bill. When the server asked me, how was everything? I replied "not very good". She didn't care to ask what the issue was.

Since moving to the Carolina's from up North I wasn't sure what to expect. I've have both dined in as well as carry out and the experience is always pleasant. I've had a few things from the menu but my favorite is the oxtail roti; It's a bit costly but well worth it as the meat is super tender, flavorful and the roti is pack full of meat. I also love the rice/ peas with the brown gravy and drinks are always phenomenal I've learned depending on the time of day you may be waiting for a bit but it's well worth it as everything is fresh, hot and made to order. The service/staff very friendly and helpful when it comes to ordering. The ambiance is upbeat, very clean and vibrant I wish I got a picture of my meal but somehow never makes it because it's that delicious

The cashier was sweet and personable. She was multitasking, but still managed to be fully engaged in the service she provided to us. She kindly let us know what items were sold out for the day and also gave us time to look over the menu and decide on our order without making us feel rushed. While we waited for our food to arrive, we noticed a steady flow of customers all the way until closing time! It's clear Island Grill & Pub is a local favorite. The food is packaged up to go, but there are plenty of tables to dine-in once you have your food...and a big screen with movies and Jamaican music playing in the background to keep you entertained. The wait for the food is a bit long...but EVERYTHING came out very fresh, very authentic, and worth the wait. The portions were plentiful, the food was flavorful and seasoned well, and the items were priced well for the value. What we ordered: - Small Jerk Chicken plate with rice & peas and cabbage - Jerk Chicken pasta - Side order of Macaroni and cheese We wish we lived closer, so we could visit Island Grill & Pub regularly, but it's definitely on our list any time we travel to the Rock Hill area!

The tarter sauce was fresh and tasty and the baked potato (which I ordered fully loaded but just got a plain one) hit the spot.
