Krazy Jim's Blimpie burger-is indeed one of the craziest places I've ever been to purchase a hamburger. I was in the neighborhood as I was conducting some business at the University of Michigan. It's pretty much a very small old house converted into an ordering counter and kitchen behind. When you come in, you are expected to have your order ready to spit out without any hesitation or you get cursed and screamed at by the person at the counter. I had read that this was their modus operandi so I wasn't shocked! The burger was cooked on a flat top that was well loved. As I really wasn't sure of the condiments they offered. I just told them to load it up. My Burger came with a nice toasted bun-it had a freshly made burger, lettuce, tomato, onion, ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. It was very tasty. Krazy Jim doesn't do any advertising, but there were an abundance of college students waiting in line to order their burger. It feels to me like he is a legend of sorts as is the Blimpie Burger. I'm glad we arrived when we did as there was only a short line. Next time you're in Ann Arbor, Michigan, check it out. You won't regret it. read more

The burger was fine - the patties are very small so would recommend getting 2 at least. I miss the original location of this greasy spoon that used to be on S Division St. That entire block has now been replaced by a new university dormitory. I was excited to hear that Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger (simply known as Blimpy's) reopened in a downtown space several years ago. Upon walking in, the first thing I noticed was the additional tables and seats. The OG spot only had countertop seating for about 10 customers. The other remarkable aspect was how this space had greatly improved ventilation. The ambiance inside the old structure was permeated with a heavy grease odor. A framed photo of that house hung on one of the walls. It was the same method of ordering at the service counter. You started with the number of patties (two to five), the style of bun, any grilled items, type of cheese, the cold condiments, and then the sauces. This is still the only burger shop I have encountered in which the patties were ordered in the following unique fractions of a pound... 1/5, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2. They were called a double, triple, quad, and quint respectively. For my meal, I went light and asked for a double on a regular bun with sauteed mushrooms, American cheese, lettuce, pickles, relish, and ketchup. The burger tasted like how I remembered it many moons ago when I was able to knock down a loaded quint burger without breaking a sweat... cholesterol and calories be damned. Between the higher prices and the newer setup, Blimpy's didn't trigger the same nostalgic feelings. On my visit to see my son, he took us to one of his favorite spots. This was a fun experience. I had heard how the rude behavior of staff was a part of the fun of the visit. I think they train team members how to make that a part of the experience . I almost felt likr i was part of a movie being made. I actually enjoye eating here. Not boring for sure. My burger was delish. Coojed just the way i like it. But i found the fried onion rings to be worth the trip alone. We are veterans of this place and have been coming for decades. We know how to order and know we NEED TRAYS and cannot EAT OFF THE TABLE. We also know this isn't McDONALDS. We also know things should be clean and not have human hair in the burger. We know the tongue in cheek "rudeness" and have no issue. But the next level rudeness we got treated with is inexcusable. We had people with limitations that could not speak loud enough to order for themselves. I'll let you imagine how ridiculous the rudeness got. We arrived on a Thursday night where they were going to close an hour early. We politely asked them to lets us order and the chefs welcomed us with a smile. Not thinking that I had my Oh State shirt on, they were NICE to us anyways. The burgers were fantastic and juicy. The onion rings and the fries were on point. I will be back with a bigger appetite. Blimpy Burger is a staple of Ann Arbor. They do purposefully have a little "attitude" with you (part of the appeal) but they do clearly have the rules listed. I believe they used to only do cash but now they also take a card which is nice. The burgers are so yummy (ate it all up before I remembered to take a picture). It was easy to place the order. The chef was extremely helpful and took the time to interact with my granddaughter. They offered her a tootsie pop if she showed her empty tray after she was done. The blimpy burger was delicious but in hindsight, my granddaughter would have ordered a third meat patty. I had some fried cauliflower which was slightly undercooked. How the mighty have fallen! Nostalgia brought me back, but unfortunately the memories are far better than the current day experience. When we got here, there was a line of about 12-15 people. Not surprised since this is a popular spot. And in the past, the line moved extremely fast since the line cooks were a well-oiled machine. Not anymore. We waited a solid 45-55 minutes online. What made it worse, when we sat on a chair while waiting on line, one of the workers yelled at us to get up and told us that seats were only for customers with food. Yes, this was a staple rule in the past, but back then, people didn't have to wait close to an hour to order their food. Also, 90% of the tables were empty (since no one was getting their food). Maybe focus on getting the food out quicker instead of wasting time enforcing silly rules that aren't even necessary. We finally get to ordering our food and we realize why it was moving so slow. There was one poor worker doing all the frying and cooking. The cashier was assisting with the condiments and the other worker was busy yelling at waiting customers. Ugh. Of course, while the worker was cooking our food, our favorite worker came back to yell at the person cooking for being too nice to the customers and order her never to apologize to the customers. What? Then he went on a rant about how he wants to be feared, not loved. It was all very weird. I know the tradition is for the workers to be "mean", but it was executed with very poor taste. Anyways, an hour later, I finally get my food. The burger was as tasty as I remembered it to be. However, the onion rings were all clumped together and soggy/mushy in some parts. Very disappointed. Husband and I are from out of town and decided to place a takeout order. Over the phone, I ordered a veggie burger with grilled onions and the man on the other end asked what I wanted on it. I currently have a cold and I'm having a hard time hearing, so I thought he asked me if I wanted another type of bun and I said no. On the way to pick it up, I realized the confusion and my husband and I were cracking up that I accidentally ordered a completely plain veggie burger with nothing but grilled onions. Again, sick, I didn't hear him. He repeated himself louder, catching the attention of the other customers, and said "Do you want anything else on it? I never knew the original Blimpy Burger. I'm an outlander. So when I arrived to Ann Arbor, and I heard of this local institution, I simply had to try it. That said, I tend to try and eat healthier these days, which means greasy burgers aren't really aren't a part of my diet. My very first taste of Blimpy Burger was simply a bite of a burger I bought for my kid. They got a triple with cheese and ketchup. Even with that very simple build, it was love at first bite. You have to start with a basic premise. Good burgers are greasy burgers. Full stop. Fat equals flavor. And in the flavor department, Krazy Jim knocks it out of the park. Part of their success is in using thin smashed style patties, as those maximize the surface area of the burger, allowing for more maillard reactioni per bite. I'm also a big fan of layering cheese in between fatty beef patties, as that rendered beef fat also helps to melt the cheese and produce almost a beefy cheesy sauce of sorts. But what I wanted was an even more savory burger from KJBB than the one I got for the kiddo. As much as possible, I stay away from sugary ketchup on my savory foods. Ketchup is for kids. I prefer to get my sweetness from grilled onions. Which you can order, and I do. They cost a little more, but are worth it. To bring even more flavor to my burger, I go for the sesame roll, and opt for blue cheese. It's a bold move to be sure, and maybe not for everyone, but blue cheese and grilled beef are fantastic together. Bacon also makes the build, because it brings the smoke and a little more fat. As far as sauces go, I like a little bit of mayo and a squirt of mustard. The tang of mustard helps to balance out the fat a little. Really, I turn to pickles and raw onions to bring my burger into a harmonious expression of fat, acid, and salt. Observant yelpers may realize there are onions two ways on my burger. Yes. Yes, there are. This isn't a burger to order on a date. It's a burger to order if you love greasy burgers. After playing around with the number of patties, with the above build, two patties strike the perfect ratio of meat to bread and toppings. That also leaves me enough appetite to have some of their fantastic deep fried broccoli. Fried broccoli is krazy! But I get to say I had a vegetable, and can pretend I ate something healthy. Plus it's awesome KJBB has other veggies than just potatoes to pair with your beefy buns. I usually steal a swig from one of my kid's bottles of Mexican Coke to wash it down. But I prefer to end on a bite of the burger, so the flavor of that thing lingers for as long as humanly possible. My love for Krazy Jim's is deep and true after only a couple years living in Ann Arbor. Considering how much I love trying new places, I keep finding myself at KJBB whenever the opportunity presents itself... and whenever I feel healthy enough that I suspect the burger won't kill me. read more

I got carry out from here and ate it across the street at The Grotto so I can't comment on the service or ambiance. Online ordering through Snack Pass was easy and our food was ready quickly. The burgers are small and I had a double burger which is a burger with two thin patties on it. You can get the burgers with a large range of free and extra-cost toppings. I went with basic toppings of ketchup, mustard, lettuce, and pickles but the sautéed mushrooms also caught my eye. I also had a side of deep-fried cauliflower which was crispy and not greasy tasting. Krazy Jim's is an Ann Arbor institution! Is the best I've ever had? Nope. But should you still try it for yourself? Absolutely! Especially if you enjoy steak cut fries! We were in the area & I'd figure we'd give it a try. We ordered online for pick up via SnackPass - super easy (no yelling with contactless online pick up either ;)) We both ordered TRIPLE burgers. You may ask why a triple? Because it's 10 patties to a pound, so you can imagine that these are pretty thin. The triple was a good amount of food for me. It's a small bun. Super simple. Almost reminds of MickeyDees (i mean that in a complimentary way). We also had to get the Papa size of the steak cut fries (absolutely no complaints) and the onion rings! Their onion rings aren't traditionally battered and fried. According to the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives episode, it takes 3 days to make -- 2 days to dry & 3rd day is fry day so that the batter sticks. I enjoy their onion rings more than the "traditional" type but it's probably best right there (since we transported it home and didn't get to eat it immediately). The sweet onion was a nice touch. Make sure you order this with ranch or BBQ sauce - these are the PERFECT vehicle for that! Two triple burgers and two Papa-sized sides+tip ran us about $20. Not bad at all. read more

I wanted to love this place because of the hype. They don't season their food. Back in the day if I had just pounded a 12 pack of Busch lite I would probably give them 5 stars. We had a group of 6 all walked away with the same complaint. Fries have no salt. Onion rings were a ball of stuck together mess with no salt. Burgers had no crisp like you'd expect on a smash burger. The meat was bland with no seasoning and if you don't get 3-5 patties it's a bread burger. Fried cauliflower was actually pretty good. I paid $40 for two crap meals. Five years later so I suppose I should update this review... I've been going to Blimpy since 2005, when it was in a house. It moved to its current location in 2017, I believe. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor. I'm only doing outdoor dining due to COVID right now and so I was happy to see that it had two picnic tables out front. I always get a double on a plain roll, and the onion strings, which are great. My boyfriend got a quad with the mixed veggies. And I usually get cream soda with my meal too. Take a look at your change when you get it, too, if you pay with cash - you might get a $2 bill or a 50c piece back. They've been doing that for a while now. Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger lived up to its name! I heard you must know your order before you walk up to the counter. And it's the counter they are cooking the food! It's intimidating the first time, I'm glad I went at 2 PM on a Tuesday- vs evening rush with a line out the door! The fry guy was very helpful & gentle (he could tell this was our first time.) The first thing you need to know: french fries or onion rings. They put so much pressure on the bun, number of patties, and what sautéed items you want on your burger, they leave out whether or not you want onion rings or fries- first thing. I got the steak fries, but I heard the onion rings are amazing! I chose the regular bun & two patties (they start at two,) then sautéed onions. They are smash burgers- so four patties equal a 1/3lb burger. I chose cheddar cheese, pickle and mustard. It was perfect for me! My 14yr old son got a four patty- and it was perfect for him! I got a fountain soda, no refills (none needed!) I smashed that burger so fast- it was so good- I barely drank my soda & was out the door within 10 mins! Krazy Jim's was on an episode of Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives by Guy Fieri. It totally deserved to be featured! A co-worker and I decided to go here for lunch. this place is small on the inside, but they did a good job trying to keep people at a good social distance. They have partitions in place to keep the workers separate from the customers. They have some tables on the inside closed off, so people can be at a distance if they are eating on the inside. If you are not comfortable eating on the inside you can call in a order to pick up. If you're looking for a good burger this is the place to come get it. I ordered a double cheeseburger with a side of fried broccoli. Both items were delicious, but I thoroughly enjoyed the fried broccoli. The prices are very reasonable.
