I dined for lunch at Cypress Hall in Downtown New Bern. The decor is great. I liked the exposed…read morebrick and high ceilings in the historic building. It also feels modern. One half feels historic and the other half feels modern with the artwork, mirrors, and finishes. The lighting is dim but you can still read the menu. It wasn't busy while I was there but quiet enough I couldn't hear other conversations. Initially the host wanted to seat me at the bar but when I declined, gave me a seat near the open kitchen. My waitress was friendly and helped me select the strawberry blonde to go with the strawberry salad. This was smaller than expected and just one or two strawberries. There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time.

Firstly, I want to commend their service... our waiter was super kind and attentive, and all the…read morestaff were continuously refilling our waters. Also, the ambiance was fun and romantic. Relatively dark and fancy inside, but more than light enough to read menus and have good convo. For one of the most highly talked about restaurants in New Bern, I was hoping for more impressive taste though. My partner and I got the half dozen oyster special, pamlico curry, and the duck pastrami pizza. It came out pretty quick and looked great (they even split our meal without us specifying and without up charge when they confirmed we were sharing), but just tasted decent. For the oysters, I would've preferred their vinaigrette on the side. Also think a classic mignonette is a bit better. The curry takes a creative but underwhelming spin on shrimp and grits. Lastly, the pizza was pretty good but could've used some more duck. To be fair, we may have just not ordered the right foods, but we weren't very impressed by the drinks either. However, based on the service and other great reviews, we will be back to try their other stuff!

Didn't happen to us, but when we arrived, there was indeed a train sitting there, and some cars in front, well, they weren't going anywhere anytime soon. Inside is all vibes, kind of set up like an old pharmacy, but slinging cocktails instead, and I have to say, the cocktails were very tasty and well priced. All the tables were full of friend and family groups playing board games and enjoying various flatbreads and libations. Seems like the kind of place the local neighborhoods enjoy and spend quite a bit of time at. At the moment, can't remember the names of the cocktails we got, its been a few months. But I do remember the toasts. This place doesnt have a kitchen in a traditional sense, more like a prep area where they bring ingredients together (that I imagine are made off site) and toast it up to present you with some pretty unique combos and flavors. Honestly, a great way around some of the health code restrictions that start to apply to more in-depth operations while still having a robust menu. We ordered a variety for the 4 of us, as this was dinner that evening. Gettin Figgy with it was a favorite, as were the Pig and the Goat, and the Reuben. Their version of a Cubano was alright, but as could be the case you'd imagine, the pork was a little dry. The caprese was the only one we got that seemed to be a universal thumbs down, the avocado spread wasn't working with the other ingredients. Definitely would come back for some of these toasts, and drinks!

It has a large and interesting drink menu and enjoyed several cocktails while we were there! I tried the Spiced Whiskey Mule, which was decent--more of a lemon taste than I expected--but then tried the Minty Cherry Mojito which I really enjoyed. We were intrigued by all the fun toasts, so we ordered several to share. My favorites were: Gettin' Figgy With It (cute names, for sure); The Pig and the Goat; and the Reuban. We did not enjoy the Caprese toast. Something about the avocado spread did not jive with the other ingredients. This is a great space for a small group friends. It's been intentionally set up with sitting areas and a wall of games you can choose from. You may struggle to find a seat and it's a place where people will park and sit for a while. Wouldn't mind going back to try out more cocktails with fun toast the next time I'm in the area!

After giving a credit card to reserve the reservation, we got 2 phone calls AND a text to confirm the reservation. The first two phone calls required about 15 minutes each to confirm. We were right on time and promptly seated. Keeping in mind it was a holiday, they knew their occupancy rate and being primarily reservations only, they had 2 servers, 2 runners and 1 bartender. They were all overwhelmed. Our server did nothing beyond taking an order. She never checked back to see if my husband got his drink. Or if we got our food. She is super cute and charming but for what is supposed to be a high end experience, I expect more in terms of service. At one point, we were told his drink was comped. We appreciated an attempt to rectify a poor experience but nothing really improved. The shrimp stater was too salty for us to finish and I gave that feedback, respectfully. My husband's steak and my snapper seemed really good at first bites. But his meal was also too salty and my meal was both too fishy (for the snapper) and the barely lukewarm (for the lemon risotto). The chocolate dessert was delicious. The service was terrible. Again, I expected a lot more than a diner-like experience, in terms of both food quality and service.

The service was great. The food however, was very disappointing. The chicken on the chicken dinner only had a little black pepper, we could not even taste salt. The potato casserole and the green beans that came with the chicken dinner were extremely bland...no other vegetables/onions, seasonings or sauces to add flavor. The pork chop was undercooked and had to be sent back, it was still pink when it came out the 2nd time, but we dared not send it back again. The brussels sprouts were very oily, however, they did have good flavor. The drinks were very good. Overall, we may give it another try, but we will wait until they have adjusted their menu.

After arriving a few minutes early we were told it would be "a bit" before they could seat us. "A bit" turned out to be more than an hour and even then they sat us at multiple tables throughout the restaurant. After being seated, we were promptly ignored. Fifteen more minutes went by before our sullen, unpleasant server took our drink orders and eventually our breakfast orders. She was not only extremely slow and inattentive, but blatantly disrespectful to one member of our party by rolling her eyes and making gestures when she thought we couldn't see her. Once our order was placed, we waited then waited more. We had decided to leave if our food had not arrived by 12pm and go to Bojangles in Vanceboro, but at 11:50, over three hours after arriving, our food finally showed up. My omelet was enormous and overflowing with ground sausage. It was OK, but would have been better with less sausage. My shredded hash browns were cold. The biscuit that accompanied the omelet was cold and hard. My dining companion liked her french toast, but noted her eggs, though properly prepared over medium, were cold. Same goes for her home fries. However, the buttery syrup, served with her french toast, was served warm and was absolutely amazing. Wow! It made my biscuit edible and was the best part of our meals. The restaurant is attached to a hardware store in a rural part of Craven County. It definitely has a country vibe and was spotless. Incredibly slow and disrespectful service combined with OK-at-best food make it difficult to recommend Voder's Dutch Pantry in any capacity to anyone.
