From 2011-2017, in the foodie wonderland of Portland, homicide detective Nick Burkhardt, alongside…read morehis partner Hank, investigated crimes in and among the intersecting creature communities of Wesen (pronounced Vessen), whose true forms often only Nick can see, because he is a Grimm or ancestral monster-hunter. But what if, instead of the Douglas fir-dominated city of Portland, those thriving communities of Wesen could be found instead in the small town of Laurel, Maryland, centrally located between the major metropolises of Baltimore and Washington, DC? And what if, as in the show, Nick temporarily lost his Grimm abilities and had to resort to observing what, to the rest of us, looks like human behavior? Nick would have to choose spots that would appeal to multiple communities. One such spot, located at 13600 Baltimore Ave, adjacent to PetSmart, is Jalapeño Fresh Mexican Bistro, which serves memorable Halal Mexican dishes (taco bowls, quesadillas, burritos) in addition to delicious Halal Afghan and Indian fusion entrees (Tandoori Chicken, Lamb Shank or Chops, the Chicken Tikka Club, Veggie Platter, Kofta, and Naan). There, Nick might come across the reformed Blutbad (wolf) Monroe, a clock repairer, who, to the disdain of his family, has shunned red meat and become a vegetarian; the Fuchsbau (fox) Rosalie, whose woge (pronounced vohguh) transformation is much more subtle and who shares a similarly powerful sense of smell; the helpful yet cowardly and often-meddling Eisbiber (ice beaver) Bud; or even one of the darker, more dangerous species--the Hexenbiest (witch-beast), Hundjager (dog-hunter), or Lausenschange (snake). All might find entrees for purchase that appeal to their cloaked or hidden forms. But, if you bring kids, be cautious to avoid the weeping woman seated at a corner table, outwardly showing grief for her lost children. She might just be La Llorona, a specter even a Grimm should be wary of.

This small, family-owned restaurant offers freshly prepared, well-seasoned South Asian cuisine in a quiet, welcoming setting. The food was flavorful, generously portioned, and made to order. We enjoyed chicken karahi, chapli kabab, chicken seekh kabab, goat curry, and chana, followed by tea. The freshly grilled meats were tender and aromatic, and the house-made breads were warm and delicious. Though the restaurant may appear unassuming from the outside, its food quality makes the visit truly worthwhile. The owner, Manzoor Ahmad, and his staff were warm, attentive, and gracious. We appreciated the pleasant conversation with the owner and the thoughtful gesture of complimentary items. The only drawback was the service time, since most dishes are prepared fresh on a small grill, resulting in a noticeable wait. However, the freshness and taste more than compensated for the delay. Overall, we had an excellent dining experience and would gladly make the relatively long drive again to enjoy their authentic and satisfying cuisine. Zafar Iqbal, PhD, Herndon, VA

The decor is nice and modern, a bit sparse, but that makes it cleaner looking. It has a nice tone about it. My one complaint is the price, but given how much you get for it... and considering how everything is getting more expensive... it is what it is. It's still a bargain since I almost always get two meals out of one. If you are gluten free, I have great news! Aside from the bread and mac (and cheese), everything is GF! This is what they told us. They fry the tenders in a GF breading and everything else is safe. Again, always double check! If you want the sandwich options, they can put the ingredients in a bowl with fries. It's worth it for some of the wonderful flavor combinations they have. Well worth returning to!

My girlfriend & I visited once on Sunday, July 13, 2025. We went over to Burtonsville seeing that a long time staple of the area was closing that day or the next, which we saw on social media. But when we got there, there was a sign saying Friday, 7/11 was their last day and thanking people for patronage. We went across the street to Tropical Smoothie, but they charged full price each for water cups; we walked out, and later that day, I slammed them with a rare 1-star Yelp review (see that from 7/13/25). I referenced ISAAC's in that review saying one of these days I got to get around to a 5-star of where we ended up, which it ended up being 11 months later. We decided to check out ISAAC's across the street from here in the newly remodeled Burtonsville Crossing center. This was order at the counter. We got chicken sandwiches, which were large, much bigger than Chick Fil-A, and more delicious too. I got mac n cheese & Brussel Sprouts, which we split. We sat at a high top counter. Seating is a bit limited on a semi-busy Sunday. Everything was great! We will need to come back here one of these days.

DENIED WATER Got…read moresome suggestions on Yelp email on restaurant recommendations and Naz's Burtonsville came up. This is only my 23rd 1-star review and crazy the 2nd business in this shopping center! See my 1-star review of Tropical Smoothie Cafe written last week (updated from my 2023 2-star review) of them. Maybe 1-2 years ago I ordered my food, and then asked for a cup of water. The guy said we have bottled water for sale, and I said no, just a free cup of water with my meal. He said we don't do that here, and told him I'm not giving any money and to cancel my order. I suggested to him that they should start giving courtesy cups of water with meal. A few months ago I was over there, and I wanted to test if Naz's changed a year later. They still didn't. The cashier said that all the Naz's don't offer the courtesy cup except for Columbia location as they had taken over the Halal Guys, which the set up of the restaurant was different for the coke machine. I've considered to try the Columbia location once, but I'm skeptical because it's still Naz's company policy to not offer courtesy cup of water to a paying food customer. It's not just that the Burtonsville only location are being jerks; it's Naz's as a whole. On Sunday, July 13, as a hail mary after the 1-star Burtonsville Tropical Smoothie Cafe right next door (see my recent review) was going to charge me $1.35 per cup of water even though we would've been paying customers. I said to my girlfriend, I'm sure Naz's will deny the water too, but let's test them, and I asked do you give a free cup of water with meal, which cashier once again said no. So, we ended up at ISAAC's across the street. I'll get around to a 5-star review of them in the future. My girlfriend said this shopping center sucks! Only Tropical Smoothie to not give courtesy cup + Naz's right next door. Also, it's the worst Roy Rogers location even though in March 2019, I see I wrote a 4-star review; various more recent experiences warrant 2-star for them if I ever get around to it. And the worst Greene Turtle I've been to; see my 3-star of the Burtonsville location. For good restaurants, go across the street to ISAAC's, Playa Bowl, or even freakin' Chipotle!

Lamb curry - Friday special I can't even begin to articulate the flavor explosion in this dish. I think that the dressing was a light vinaigrette base with a strong dill presence. Spinach was cooked to the perfect texture, leaving it still having a little bit of bite and not being mushy at all. Good seasoning as well. Be sure to order a side of fresh bread, it comes out piping hot as it is made to order. Soft texture , with starting this, allowing you to scoop the sauce. Service For it to be a more of a carry out or dine and go quickly atmosphere, the service was top notch, royalty level. Extremely personable anticipating customers needs.
