    Large Hominy Corn Porridge
    Keisha M.

I've visited this restaurant several times and gradually trying there different menu options which I feel is a good time to offer a review on. First I'll say I grew up on authentic good good Jamaican food and well know how it should taste. Therefore, I look for a certain level of standards while keeping mindful that restaurants are catering to the general public so they may make some minor adjustments however it still should take away from the overall taste. That's my disclaimer. Thankfully service has improved since the last couple times I visited. Not sure if it's because they've seen me more often and remember me , someone said something to them, or simply having better days. Whatever it is I'm grateful because my initial experience was such a turn off that I was strongly considering ever going back even as much as I love to support local businesses esp minority owned. Now we got those things out the way on to the food reviews. Hands down my all time favorite thing to get there which keeps me coming back is there fry dumplings and festivals. Truly taste like mom's homemade fresh out the frying pan. Fry dumplings are nice and buttery with the perfect crunch on the outside and soft gooey dough on the inside. There festival has the perfect sweetness and texture with nice crunch but not too hard yet soft on the inside. Unfortunately they only make festivals on some Saturdays. I suggest calling first and please save some for me as they sell out fast. Lol. I hope they start making them more regularly and larger quantities for this reason. Two weeks ago when I came for my usual Saturday festival pick up I saw they had Hominy Corn Porridge. This is my all time favorite porridge to have growing up that my mom made for me until I learned how to make it myself cause I'm a porridge girl. Well I must say Cottage Grill nailed it on this one as well. It was oh so flavorful, perfect thickness (for restaurant style. I prefer it thicker but again they are serving to general public. I still enjoyed every bit of it. Will definitely be back for more. Note - they only make this on some Saturdays as well. Call first. On that same day I also saw they had Stew Peas and decided to give that a try as well especially cause it had pigtails in it. In my opinion that's my the most authentic and flavorful or at least my favorite way to enjoy Stew Peas. I've had many good variations including vegetarian but with pigtails is my favorite. And YES, I was on an unexpected food sampling fest that day. Lol . The Stew Peas flavor wise was just ok. I've definitely had much better at another local restaurant. I will say it did have a good amount of meat, dumplings, etc. I had it with white rice which was fine but wasn't hitting the spot flavor wise. Therefore, I'll stick to my other spot for that. In the past I've also tried there Oxtails with rice and peas along with plantains. My favorite Jamaican dish to eat that I grew up on. Unfortunately, it lacked in flavor and the best could have been a bit softer. It was bland with not enough seasoning (even for restaurant style) and they need to allow the seasoning to marinate in it as well. That's what gives Oxtails its true flavor. It was kinda pricey too but I was craving it the day I got it and was VERY disappointed. Same experience with their jerk chicken that I tasted when my friend ordered it. It was such as disappointment they didn't finish eating eat. Also, we are not a fan of jerk cooked in the oven as it just doesn't taste the same as on the grill and greatly takes away from the authenticity of jerk. For these reasons I gave this review three stars . I've also tried the Coconut Drops they sell there. It's made by someone else and just sold there. It's hit or miss when they have them. I've definitely had much much better as it lacks in flavor especially ginger which is what really makes a good Coconut Drops. I get it once in a while when I'm really craving one as they are one of the few places locally that sometimes has it. While I can make my own it's quite time consuming but reminds me why I should. lol. On a brighter note one of the first things I tried when picking up fry dumplings was their Pepper Shrimp and it was good. It had a nice spicy kick to it without being over powering. Good heat/flavor combo. I love eating it with fry dumplings and/or festivals. It was delicious and I'd definitely would get again. Priced reasonably as well along with being good size shrimps. I look forward to trying more of their other dishes like the Lobster I saw the last two Saturdays. Looks really good. I'll have to plan that on a real treat myself day. I'll keep you posted on my other samplings. Thanks for reading my long review but I hope it gives a good idea on what to consider when visiting.

Awesome venue!! Great food and even greater people!!!

Shoutout to Ms Esther, Mr Gary and staff! We really appreciate all the LOVE that is being put into this food! I get my favorite foods first and then have a try of more dishes to educate my palate with the treasure chest of flavors that is offered in this venue! The ice creams and desserts are delicious as well!! Cornbread, bakes, and coco bread... so much to love about the food of this cuisine. I am always leaving full and happy when I eat here. We ordered a tray of oxtail, peas and rice, a tray of curry chicken and Roti for our youngest daughter's birthday party! It was a hit. We also like all the flavors of ice cream!! Some new Unique flavors as well as old classics. The store area is always fun to get ingredients, treats, and souvenirs! I am blessed to have a great local venue like this :)

If you love Caribbean food, please make this one of your go-to spots!!!!! The food is delicious from main dishes like oxtail, hot pepper shrimp, jerk chicken with white rice or rice and peas to something simple as Jamaican patties. Some food is made fresh, so there is a wait, but it's worth it knowing that the food is freshly made. The staff is polite, and the owners are very humble. All around a great place for your dining needs.

Teriyaki jerk chicken and fried dumplings
    Andrew P.

When I heard that a good college friend's mom opened a new restaurant in Laurel a couple months ago, I kept it in the back of my mind but I never knew when I was going to go. An opportunity came about last night, so I headed on over there. Parking right in front of the place is limited, but I just used the parking lot right across the street. When I went in, I could see that they had plenty of stickers on the floor for social distancing, though it wasn't crowded. I had called my order in about a half hour before, and when I told them what I ordered, they immediately prepared my platter. I'm glad it wasn't just sitting on the counter getting cold, because it would've been ice! I was also pleased to see that they set aside the three fried dumplings I had ordered so they wouldn't get claimed. I got the Teriyaki Jerk Chicken platter, which isn't on the menu (BBQ Jerk Chicken is on there though). I was intrigued, so I gave it a shot. I wasn't expecting it to be as spicy as it was, but that's a good thing! I expected the sweetness to take over, but it was a great balance in my opinion! The texture of the chicken was on point too. I have no complaints about the rice & peas, steamed cabbage and corn bread (the tiny tiny piece it was, lol). The plantain could've been fried just a little longer, but it still tasted great. I wanted festival, but the fried dumplings got the job done! From what I can tell, this place is improving as time progresses, and I'm looking forward to trying other things! Don't let the current rating fool you! Hope you all get to enjoy it like I did!

    Brown stew snapper
    Rummy M.

I got the brown stew snapper with plantains and rice and peas...I'm normally very picky when it comes to my snapper and was truly shocked at how delicious and flavorful this dish was! Not to mention affordable with great customer service! For $25- a made to order delicious brown stew snapper is a steak! Truly recommend this spot!

This is my third time eating here. I have not been disappointed. This is authentic Jamaican food. This is my new favorite spot. So far I've had the oxtails and curry. I can't wait to go back. I decided to try the jerk today. So good. I love that they have lunch specials.

I've been there twice and I can personally testify that they have authentic Jamaican cuisine Either go with the $6.95 lunch special where you can get. Jerk chicken with rice & cabbage or go with the dinner special of goat & rice with cabbage Yeaaaaaaaaa Mon, it's very good!

    Curry Chicken Lunch Platter
    Stephen J.

For $6.95 in this area for a lunch special you can't beat it. I had the curry chicken meal which came with a corn bread muffin and a drink. The vegetables and rice were tasty and the generous portion of chicken was tender. The surprise of the meal was the cornbread. The delectable seasoning in the cornbread was good!

They're located inside of the Kung Fu Tea. The TKK sign was small, so it's easy to miss. Customer service was good, and they made sure to inform us that the chicken would take about 15 minutes to prepare. I got the 3 piece spicy meal which came with a biscuit and fries. I was told the 3 pieces would be random, and you can't specify a preference of white or dark meat. I liked that the meal came in a bucket and thought it was a cute touch. The fries were pretty disappointing - they were a little soggy and very greasy. The chicken was good until I saw the huge 3rd piece of meat. I got a leg, thigh, and I have no idea what that 3rd piece of meat was. It was huge and unidentifiable. It scared me and turned me off from eating the rest of the meal. If they have an option for all wings, I may go back and give that a try since the flavor was good.

My partner ordered the combo and LOVES fried chicken and did not enjoy it and only ate one piece. I did not understand the disconnect from my great experience and their experience. I tasted a piece the next day along with one piece I had leftover and understood. The flavor was different between the two pieces. I would definitely go back and would highly recommend the spicy chicken!!! Thumbs up!!

All have been 3-4 stars (even the ones I hadn't reviewed). A friend claimed she got food poisoning from the Wheaton Mall location, which surprised me as the food quality is high, but maybe that location fell short. I prefer some other locations over Wheaton Mall one. As for the Laurel location, this one is my favorite, and I've been somewhat often. I've never had any significant issue with them. The food quality is great. I'll get a 1/4 or 1/2 chicken with 2 sides like redskin mashed potatoes, Brussel sprouts, corn, fries, bread, etc. Staff is relatively nice here. I talked to the manager a couple of times about a couple of minor things, and manager is good here. One time in July 2025, I went for Mandela Day, and it was a madhouse as it was a free 1/4 chicken with fries. Nando's reward program got worse; so I'm less motivated to schlep to Laurel just to get Nando's. However, if I was going to go with Nando's, I'd go with this one as Arundel Mills let me down last time. Service & food is always top notch at the Laurel location.

Upon entering, we were met with graffiti inspired artwork on the walls, which was cool. We perused the menu and decided to order. They have different levels of spice for your chicken and decided on an order that was mild (2 sandwich meal) , medium, (2 sandwich meal) and extra hot (I was warned by my daughter to rethink this option, but, alas, I did not heed her warning; 1 tender 1 sandwich meal). They had the spiciest level, reaper, which you have to sign a waiver to purchase, I wasn't that crazy y'all... Food delivery service was available and they had an LED board with which ones each order was under. The service was great with the associates very pleasant at the counter. We also ordered a fruit punch slushy, but it was TOO sweet for me and I couldn't finish it. If you love sweet drinks, this would be the one for you! We were given a buzzer and we didn't wait long for our order to be ready. The orders were accompanied by crinkle cut fries (we got cheese on ours for an extra cost) along with a small container of coleslaw, pickle slices, and Dave's Sauce. The fries were good with that cheese sauce: fresh, crispy, not greasy and the sauce tasting like real cheese. Now....I pride myself on enjoying a good hot spiced item from time to time... but my extra hot tender was not to be played with. I bit into that crispy tender and instantly knew I indeed "bit off more than I could chew!" It was as if that hot spiced item shot through my whole body and I was heated on the inside for about a couple of minutes. I say that to say, if you are not into spicy SPICY, don't go above medium. So glad I chose a medium spice sandwich (yes, you can get different spice levels in your order) because that saved me. The chicken was fresh, with a crispy coating on a fresh bun with Dave's sauce. The pickles were fresh and crisp (my go-to to put out that heat from that extra hot chicken tender!), the coleslaw was fresh and ok. I really don't like sauces like the Dave's sauce on my food, so the next time I will get my sandwich without it. All in all, a nice place for a good chicken sandwich, especially with the cheese fries! Epilogue: I saved the rest of that extra hot tender to eat the next day hoping the spice level had dissipated...but no...it seems as if it intensified...but I still ate it...maybe I'm used to that spice level now...
