This was our first visit and we were welcomed warmly. While we waited for our dinners, we enjoyed a very tasty mild beef pie. The oxtails and brown stewed chicken we got were both seasoned and tenderly cooked. We both will ask for more cabbage and a little more gravy next time and yes- we will visit again! If you're on the fence about giving this place a try, do it! I had been driving past it for weeks and finally gave it a shot. The spot doesn't have a ton of curb appeal, but don't let that stop you from checking it out. The inside isn't anything fancy but is good to sit down for a quick lunch or to-go order. They have all the classic Jamaican dishes as well as weekday specials. I ordered the small curry goat which came with rice and peas and cabbage. I also ordered a side of the Mac and cheese. My order took about 10 mins which was fine. Couldn't wait to get home to dig in. The curry goat was delicious. Nice tender chunks of goat with plenty of great flavor. I've visited this restaurant several times and gradually trying there different menu options which I feel is a good time to offer a review on. First I'll say I grew up on authentic good good Jamaican food and well know how it should taste. Therefore, I look for a certain level of standards while keeping mindful that restaurants are catering to the general public so they may make some minor adjustments however it still should take away from the overall taste. That's my disclaimer. Thankfully service has improved since the last couple times I visited. Not sure if it's because they've seen me more often and remember me , someone said something to them, or simply having better days. Whatever it is I'm grateful because my initial experience was such a turn off that I was strongly considering ever going back even as much as I love to support local businesses esp minority owned. Now we got those things out the way on to the food reviews. Hands down my all time favorite thing to get there which keeps me coming back is there fry dumplings and festivals. Truly taste like mom's homemade fresh out the frying pan. Fry dumplings are nice and buttery with the perfect crunch on the outside and soft gooey dough on the inside. There festival has the perfect sweetness and texture with nice crunch but not too hard yet soft on the inside. Unfortunately they only make festivals on some Saturdays. I suggest calling first and please save some for me as they sell out fast. Lol. I hope they start making them more regularly and larger quantities for this reason. Two weeks ago when I came for my usual Saturday festival pick up I saw they had Hominy Corn Porridge. This is my all time favorite porridge to have growing up that my mom made for me until I learned how to make it myself cause I'm a porridge girl. Well I must say Cottage Grill nailed it on this one as well. It was oh so flavorful, perfect thickness (for restaurant style. I prefer it thicker but again they are serving to general public. I still enjoyed every bit of it. Will definitely be back for more. Note - they only make this on some Saturdays as well. Call first. On that same day I also saw they had Stew Peas and decided to give that a try as well especially cause it had pigtails in it. In my opinion that's my the most authentic and flavorful or at least my favorite way to enjoy Stew Peas. I've had many good variations including vegetarian but with pigtails is my favorite. And YES, I was on an unexpected food sampling fest that day. Lol . The Stew Peas flavor wise was just ok. I've definitely had much better at another local restaurant. I will say it did have a good amount of meat, dumplings, etc. I had it with white rice which was fine but wasn't hitting the spot flavor wise. Therefore, I'll stick to my other spot for that. In the past I've also tried there Oxtails with rice and peas along with plantains. My favorite Jamaican dish to eat that I grew up on. Unfortunately, it lacked in flavor and the best could have been a bit softer. It was bland with not enough seasoning (even for restaurant style) and they need to allow the seasoning to marinate in it as well. That's what gives Oxtails its true flavor. It was kinda pricey too but I was craving it the day I got it and was VERY disappointed. Same experience with their jerk chicken that I tasted when my friend ordered it. It was such as disappointment they didn't finish eating eat. Also, we are not a fan of jerk cooked in the oven as it just doesn't taste the same as on the grill and greatly takes away from the authenticity of jerk. For these reasons I gave this review three stars . I've also tried the Coconut Drops they sell there. It's made by someone else and just sold there. It's hit or miss when they have them. I've definitely had much much better as it lacks in flavor especially ginger which is what really makes a good Coconut Drops. I get it once in a while when I'm really craving one as they are one of the few places locally that sometimes has it. While I can make my own it's quite time consuming but reminds me why I should. lol. On a brighter note one of the first things I tried when picking up fry dumplings was their Pepper Shrimp and it was good. It had a nice spicy kick to it without being over powering. Good heat/flavor combo. I love eating it with fry dumplings and/or festivals. It was delicious and I'd definitely would get again. Priced reasonably as well along with being good size shrimps. I look forward to trying more of their other dishes like the Lobster I saw the last two Saturdays. Looks really good. I'll have to plan that on a real treat myself day. Shoutout to Ms Esther, Mr Gary and staff! We really appreciate all the LOVE that is being put into this food! I get my favorite foods first and then have a try of more dishes to educate my palate with the treasure chest of flavors that is offered in this venue! The ice creams and desserts are delicious as well!! Cornbread, bakes, and coco bread... so much to love about the food of this cuisine. I am always leaving full and happy when I eat here. We ordered a tray of oxtail, peas and rice, a tray of curry chicken and Roti for our youngest daughter's birthday party! It was a hit. We also like all the flavors of ice cream!! When I heard that a good college friend's mom opened a new restaurant in Laurel a couple months ago, I kept it in the back of my mind but I never knew when I was going to go. An opportunity came about last night, so I headed on over there. Parking right in front of the place is limited, but I just used the parking lot right across the street. When I went in, I could see that they had plenty of stickers on the floor for social distancing, though it wasn't crowded. I had called my order in about a half hour before, and when I told them what I ordered, they immediately prepared my platter. I'm glad it wasn't just sitting on the counter getting cold, because it would've been ice! I was also pleased to see that they set aside the three fried dumplings I had ordered so they wouldn't get claimed. I got the Teriyaki Jerk Chicken platter, which isn't on the menu (BBQ Jerk Chicken is on there though). I was intrigued, so I gave it a shot. I wasn't expecting it to be as spicy as it was, but that's a good thing! I expected the sweetness to take over, but it was a great balance in my opinion! The texture of the chicken was on point too. I have no complaints about the rice & peas, steamed cabbage and corn bread (the tiny tiny piece it was, lol). The plantain could've been fried just a little longer, but it still tasted great. I wanted festival, but the fried dumplings got the job done! From what I can tell, this place is improving as time progresses, and I'm looking forward to trying other things! Went to this restaurant on July 24, 2021. Upon walking in there was one lady behind the "hot bar" two women (employees) sitting taking to one another while a third lady was sweeping. There was also one young man sitting by the register. Upon walking in and walking up to the "hot bar" I wasn't greeted. I knew prior to going inside I either wanted the pepper shrimp or Stewed Snapper. I was taken back upon walking in seeing a hot bar with food just sitting there. I personally don't eat from restaurants that have food just sitting out so I had to collect myself and my thoughts. I really wanted to turn around and walk out but I went ahead and asked my question about the pepper shrimp. Upon finding out they were a part or the hot bar options I inquired as to whether or not they had Stewed Snapper on this day. I was informed you Snapper was made to order and it would take 40min to an hour. I was hungry but figured this would be the case so I had no issue with that. I was told there's an option between a $20 fish and a $30 fish. I choose the $20 fish (we will revisit this momentarily). It took approximately an hour to receive the call that my order was completed. Upon walking in Upon walking back in the women who worked at the establishment were still seated having conversation. The chef clearly wanted to see who ordered the stewed snapper he started to come out, stopped then just starred at me over the swinging doors to the kitchen - as if I couldn't clearly see him. The woman behind the counter gave me my order after looking in the bag. Prior to walking out I wanted to make sure I had the right order. Upon looking in the bag the lid was completely off the tin container. The woman then proceeded to ask me if the lid came off (she clearly knew it had as she looked in the bag prior to giving to me) I said yes and she offered me reynolds wrap. I put the reynolds wrap on the container and just left. Onto the food....the peas & rice was technically RICE with the surprise pea. The Cabbage had no seasoning at all whatsoever (not even pepper). The fish.......while well prepared it was NOT a $20 piece of fish. For $20 I expected the fish to be a pretty good size, like take up the tin pan. I honestly expected a container with the snapper and stew and a different container with the RICE & PEAS, cabbage and plantains. I needed more STEW but that part of the meal was good. The plantains were tho!!! Long story short: Definitely not authentic Jamaican. I WILL NOT BE RETURNING. I really wanted to support a small business in my community but I won't waste my money here. I was looking for a Caribbean spot in the area as I was passing through Laurel on my way home. I am so glad I found this place. I had curry chicken, rice, cabbage, plantains, and a beef patty. The spice level was perfect as far as that kick you get as you savor the food that has just been swallowed. I was pleasantly surprised. The place is very clean and bright but nothing makes food taste better as when you get top of the line customer service. The kid behind the counter (not a kid, but a young man) was incredibly sweet and cool. We just talked and talked while he was preparing the food. I have a feeling that this is one of those places where everyone gets treated like fam and I loved his vibe. I'll be back in a couple weeks to get food for the entire family. Love the effort made to have a large menu. Many Jamaican classic dishes that surrounding restaurants don't offer. Unfortunately, the execution was not the greatest. Jerk chicken tasted more like grilled. Coco bread was burnt on the sides. Cornbread was dry. Fried plantains very greasy. Dumplings in stew peas tasted frozen. I was happy beyond all happiness with my callaloo patties.... I used to exclusively go deep into PG to get my fix, so it's nice to know that travel time is reduced by half! And they're spicier! With a good soft cocobread, steamed, I'm in heaven. For 1, scrolling through the yelp reviews today, September 23, 13 positive reviews are not recommended for viewing, all from AUGUST, while 2 negative reviews, from ppl coming in late at night when they are either about to close or didn't even eat there are the ones creating the "2 star" ratings. That's not fair.... and to be honest Cottage Hill closes earlier than the other surrounding restaurants so it is not entirely fair to expect that at 7:59 they are going to have large fresh trays of food ready for 30 min of service... My suggestion for y'all is to have a small tray of "overflow" entrees for the popular dishes kept in the back to top off the service dishes in the front so you never look like you're "lacking". As consumers, we eat with our eyes first so it doesn't help if it appears as tho we are getting the latter bone pickings of the night. Having worked in restaurants in this area for years, the dinner rush in this area doesn't realistically end until around 7:30ish and there is still often a relatively consistent drizzle of ppl afterwards so plan your portions accordingly... if you want to stay on top whilst having so many surrounding counterparts around you who stay open later....
