When I'm on the road in ND, Kroll's Diner is my occasional go-to breakfast stop. I keep it simple; Eggs OE, Hashbrowns, Link Sausages, and Sour Dough toast. It's always good, HB's crispy, eggs done right, and the larger than most Links excellent. If you want the local news, keep your mouth closed and your ears open. You'll know what's going on before you leave. Down home cooking and famous for their Knoefle soup. Be aware though, when doing your research on the Knoefle soup, you'll find all North Dakotans will insist that they make a better one. read more

This is a diner - no doubt about it. The decor brings you straight back to the 1950's. Their menu supports both traditional diner fare (roast beef commercial sandwich, malts and pies) as well as German specialties and modern expectations - a little of everything. The salad was your standard iceberg lettuce from a bag with croutons served on a silver pan. The roast beef commercial was HUGE, but there was enough salt between the meat and gravy to cause a kidney stone. The crispy chicken sandwich came to our table hot and freshly fried garnished with lettuce and a tomato, with optional mayo - I'd definitely order the sandwich again. The strawberry rhubarb pie to go really bumped this place from 3 stars to 4. Monday is BOGO shakes! read more

I have not been to Knolls dinner in such a long time and I ways not disappoint that is for sure I order pancakes I started to order two and the waitress suggested that I only get one as for they are larger pancakes OMG she was not kidding the thing was huge I'm glad I took her advice and only ordered one otherwise I probably would of never finished two as for I still had about 5 or more bites left on my plate. Besides the good suggestion from the waitress I liked that they served there syrup on the warm side versus some places where they just bring you a jar cold. read more

One sunday morning I woke up to find myself starving for food. So after trying to convince my lovely gf to cook pancakes to no avail, I decided to take the two of us to this nice little restaurant just around the corner of my apartment. Having always used to IHOP, a sudden change of restaurant might mess up the morning appetite. Thank God this place is as awesome as the interiors it has. Prettty small inside although it looks rather huge outside. I ordered the bourbon burger and milkshakes and it tasted delish!! Our cute maybe 16 year old waitress attend to us promptly and suggested a nice cookie dough milkshakes. It was absolutely awesome! I know where to go for breakfast the next time I failed to convince my gf to cook. LOL. read more

When a place makes the most impression on me by having a poor mix of Diet Mt. Dew on tap, that's usually not a good sign. This one was on my hit list of places to try in Fargo, though even if it wouldn't have been, the sort of old-timey exterior feel of the place would have triggered enough of a nostalgia hit in me (like Arnold's in Rapid City did) to stop in. Decor is basically the sort of checkerboard old malt shops, thematically, with lots and lots of pictures of old cars and old car ads on the walls. If not familiar, picture the Happy Days restaurant or the movie American Graffiti set to a restaurant. My wife had a skillet of some sort with sauerkraut and my son the chicken nuggets, both of which were passable, aside from the sauerkraut, which was pretty good. As is my wont, I try to find something representative of the local flavor (in this case, German) or something I can't get in Salt Lake, preferably both as here), I had the breakfast Fleischkuechle, after some moments of consideration and the Habanero cheese bites (disgusting and not spicy in the least). Perhaps nothing else will epitomize this experience more than simply saying that this place likes to use processed cheese...and possibly powdered eggs. The fried bread itself was tolerable, but the sausage and egg inside were not something I would care to experience again. The sausage gravy that came with was also not much beyond passable and I didn't wind up finishing anything. I would also add the largely ambivalent nature of our wait staff, who seemed disinterested at best the entire time we were there, puts this on the lower side of likelihood that I will return there. I think if they stuck with the more Germanic things and also started using actual real food, this would be a pleasant place to eat, but as it is now, it's something to go to once, for the experience and never bother with again. read more

Couldn't fault anything, decor was classic fifties, authentic and super clean, the portions were ( very) ample, the links in the pigs in the blanket were sumptuous and the pastry of the 'fleischenkügel' was so buttery/flaky...to top it off, in a car themed diner, our awesome server was called Chevelle! read more

The food is mediocre for the amount of time sitting there waiting. If you have nothing else to do in the day, it's a fine place to be with an ok interior. The staff appear to wander around a lot looking busy. Somehow it took 20 minutes to get my chocolate shake. Not sure what happened, but no explanation was provided. Don't go hungry! read more

Busy place.... And because it's so busy it takes quite a while to get your food. It also takes a while before a server will wait on you if you sit at the counter... It's like they know you need to get I and out quickly so they purposely make you wait. The breakfast is average at best and the place is in need to a little sprucing up. The skillet that my breakfast was served on had some yuck built up on the handle. I was starving so I tried not to look at it, but it didn't work. I like the aesthetics as well as the interior/exterior design of the building, but other than that, the food is very mediocre. I could stay home and make myself a turkey wrap that is 10 times better, and 10 times less expensive. It took about 15 minutes just to get our shakes, and about 45 for our food. I usually love this place. I come here on most shakey mondays but last time my friends and I went, we we very disappointed. My friend ordered a shake, and midway through eating, she found sharp plastic piece inside it. Luckily, she didn't eat it, but when we brought it up to the waitress she was just trying to defend herself saying she "didn't mean to do that." Well duh, but never mentioned anything about getting her shake for free. When we went up to check out, we asked for the manager. He also tried to defend himself but after awhile, he offered to give it to us for free. Then they split the check between 3 people (there were 3 of us) but we tried to tell them that because she didn't have to pay for hers, we shouldn't get the coupon applied on a 3rd. Last visit was amazing tonight disappointing. I ordered chicken fried steak and eggs with hash browns. Asked for them double crisp which they came back supper soggy. Biscuit and gravy was ok not great at all. Chicken friend steak was hard and had no meat at all was. Or hung but breading. The waitress was super nice tho! Went here for an early morning bite to eat. I had the Grandma's pancakes with their homemade sausage patties and scrambled eggs. for $7.95. The eggs were fresh and pretty flavorful. That's something to be said because I don't like eggs.The pancakes were huge and I was glad I only got the short stack Their sausage was crisp on the outside and bursting with rich homemade flavor and heartiness. I added on an order of hash browns and this is where they lost me. The waiter forgot to put in my hash browns then forgot them on the window for a while. He ended up comping them, however they were still mushy. If you get the hash browns order them well done. The service was still very good for 4am on a sunday and the food was even better. Get your hash browns well done and you'll be five starring this place in no time. read more

I enjoyed the experience! Traveling solo and wanting something unique to the area versus what I could get at home...I was very satisfied with the food, service and atmosphere. I think the three stars is generous and I selected it only because our server was gracious, apologetic (to nearly every customer she encountered), and friendly. That's really the only positive thing I can say. We weren't expecting a fine dining experience, but rather some good, quick, hearty diner food. What we received was a step below meh, except my fries - they were extra crispy and hot. My dining companion's meal sat in the window for over 15-20 minutes, refusing it would have only delayed what should have been a quick meal (at a non-busy meal service time) and turned it into a two hour experience. Our server apologized multiple times, but was unable to offer anything other than a complimentary dessert as there was no manager available. We stopped here based on a recommendation from someone at the Fargo Moorhead Visitors Center. We wanted casual comfort food, and this was an excellent choice. We had friendly customer service, the prices were reasonable, our food and shakes were delicious, and the diner had a fun atmosphere. There were groups of high school kids, parents with young children, and single people stopping by after work, all creating an eclectic mix of customers. Ate here ate 8 pm on a sunday. 3 servers that 1 actually looked like she was at least attempting to keep busyish. The other 2 sat and talked most of the time we were here. 1 kept crouching down to eat and drink. Never washed her hands. Other one didn't even try to hide that she was eating. Again, didn't even wash her hands. 2 guys that were wearing street clothes that apparently worked there sat and talked/flirted with the 2 chatty servers. Also another male stiff talked about inappropriate things with the chatty servers and one of the chatty servers was very loud. So to sum it up, service was horrible. As for the food, one got a patty melt with fries. That was ok. I got an omelet and it, as well as the hash browns were swimming in fat. Haven't even left yet and my stomach is already hurting.
