I have a crush on Krust. I also reunited with an old crush at Krust. Here's my story. I had heard good things about this little pizza joint, but living an hour or so away from Middletown, I hadn't had the opportunity to check it out yet. However, when I reconnected with an old crush from summer camp, we decided to meet up at Krust. I arrived early, as I always do, to check out the ambiance. After chatting with the waitress, I discovered that the restaurant recently expanded its space to accommodate more diners. The new space was beautiful, so if you haven't visited in the last year or so, you should definitely come back and check out the new space. My dining companion arrived, and we engaged in a warm hug. She was just like I remembered here, pretty, witty, and fun. We ordered a couple beers and some pizza. The Sunny Side, which was composed of fresh mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic, bacon and egg, was absolutely delicious. The food was gone quick, but the conversation lasted several rounds of drinks. The bad news: my lovely dining companion, beautiful former crush, was happily married. The good news: the food was amazing, and we are good friends now. A quirky pizza place which isn't going to be for everyone. I've given three stars because frankly the pros and cons are fairly equivalent for me, and for my wife and I, we feel like Krust is a great place to take friends to, while not a place the two of us would go on our own. Maybe a quick list would be the easiest way to explain: Pros: --delicious thin crust wood-fired pizzas, many varieties, generous toppings --offbeat but enjoyable decor that looks like you're inside a sawmill --amazing liquor selection, both for whiskeys of all kinds and for craft cocktails Cons: --very, very loud, sometimes to the point where you wonder if the decor is actively meant to inhibit normal conversation --too many tables in too small a space --you pretty much have to flag down wait staff if you want anything --wait staff are a mixed bag, sometimes friendly, sometimes not, and sometimes (sad to say) pretty clueless about service The drawbacks are significant because this is in no way a place for a date night, but if you have a boisterous party who just want good booze and good pizza, it's a great choice. read more

Can't say I'm impressed with this spot. Came here on a Friday night. First off, the atmosphere is very loud and lively. Great for some, not really my thing though. There is a decent selection of beer and a wide variety of whisky and spirits. If you're a whisky person, seems a good spot for you. The food, however, was very mediocre. I got the buratta which was oddly paired with stale chips of bread and pickled carrots and parsnips. These pickled veggies were utterly soaked in vinegar and made for a very confusing pairing for the flavorful and creamy buratta. It was a strange and poor combination, for sure. Though the buratta itself was delicious, if small. The cheeseburger sliders tasted off for me. The meat honestly didn't taste like beef to me. It was dry with an almost funky, gamey flavor - not juicy at all. I also tried a slice of my mother-in-laws Brussels sprout pizza and it was surprisingly soggy. I mentioned this and the other two people with us both mentioned their pizzas were as well. If your name is Krust, you would think you'd have crispy nice crust. Alas. Also the ceiling is all plywood. It gives a very untidy and unfinished appearance. I have no idea if it's actually unfinished or if it was done on person, but I don't think it looks good personally. I would like to mention that the service was good. The hosts and wait staff were all very polite and attentive. Overall this was a miss for me. I don't think I'll be coming back. The pizza is much better at Mondo's down the street. All that said, I imagine this is a great place for whisky lovers. So if you're a fan of the spirits, I'd say it's worth checking out. read more

686 Main street, Hmmmm let me drive by it four times, including once over that damn bridge because I couldn't turn around in time. Call them to see where the heck they're located. Nobody answers. Finally I pull over wherever the #686 should be, and see a somewhat inconspicuous door. Make fiance run inside to check. Confirms it's the right place. Now with my experience, the only reason it is EVER ok for somebody not to have a sign, is that if the food and ambiance is so freaking phenomenal, that they feed off of word of mouth alone, and they are always packed because they are just that good. I doubted that was the case, but you never know. In reality, I'm guessing maybe they haven't gotten to it yet since they're still so new, or maybe the owner didn't take Marketing 101 that says the first, second and third most important things in business is location, and the 4th is signage. We walk in. It was pretty busy. Wait staff was really nice. Then they offered us the table in front of the door. "In front of the door", is an understatement. It was practically outside. Like I would have had to duck out of the way every time someone walked in. There was barely enough clearance for the door swing to clear the table, nevermind the person walking by. "Ummm, we'll wait for the next open table." Grab a drink at the bar. My oh My! That pizza oven looks delightful. I'm really excited to try some pizza. Sit down a few minutes later. Look at menu. Two salads and pizza? OK, weird, but I can live with this. I'm starving. Order salad and pizza. Walk to bathroom. I can barely fit down the aisle way (definitely not to code) and someone else is trying to walk by me in the opposite direction. I have no choice but to step out of the way and place my ass in the face of some poor customer, to let the other person pass. Girl walking by was about the same size as me (petite) so I worry what might go wrong if there were larger people, or worse, a fire. I realize in case of fire, chairs are cheapo and light enough for me to throw out of the way while trying to run down aisleway. Just hope no one is sitting at that table in front of the door, because it would be really hard to get around them. Then I notice the kitchen takes up one half of the restaurant. How is that necessary, when they make two salads? The pizza oven is in the bar area. What goes on in that kitchen? Get to ladies room. No toilet paper. Waitress brings salads. There was about one walnut broken into 5 small crumbs, and a slice of a strawberry on it. Come on, you really couldn't give me multiple nuts? Or a whole strawberry? Then we wait, and we wait, and we wait for that pizza. Fiance gets restless and goes to bathroom. At which time, he walks by the 20 year old douches that are supposed to making my damn pizza, and they are drinking their bourbon and laughing, having a great time, while I'm freaking starving. Pizza finally comes. Its burnt, but cold and doughy. Wet dought. Not sure how that is even possible. Came home unfulfilled. Made myself a cheesy snack because I was still starving. Well I've been here what seems like 100 times, so I decided that it might be time for a review. This place gets busy, don't get me wrong, but since they changed the layout of the bar and expanded the restaurant itself a while back, it's much easier to find a table or a spot at the bar. First of all, their draft list is pretty impressive and at any given time there is a combination of local and unique craft brews. The array of hard liquors is quite a sight to behold; in addition to daily food and drink specials, they also have featured whiskey pours every day. If you're not into beer, the drink specials are incredibly creative and delicious, so you have plenty of booze options! Now let's get into really good stuff...the food! Nearly every time I come I get the pickled eggs and share an arugula salad and a gluten free pizza. The pizzas on the standard menu are amazing, but the specials always take it to a new level. I've had some mind-blowing combinations on special pies, including huevos rancheros, apple and pig, and funghi, just to name a few. If by some miracle you're still hungry after all the delicious drinks and "real" food, there's a small selection of Nora cupcakes (although none that are gf to the best of my knowledge) to choose from and dessert pizzas topped with Nutella and bananas or strawberries. The staff is great, and since I've spent most visits eating at the bar, I can vouch for the efficiency of the bartenders. If I could afford to go out every night & had the metabolism of a hummingbird, I would park myself here daily for a pie & a beer. Tonight my daughter and I finally made it to Krust to give it a try and welcome it to the neighborhood. I'd been hoping to for a few weeks now, but the best laid plans gang'd agley. Arriving just before 5, we found plenty of people already seated, but one of the servers quickly offered us not one, but two tables; we took the one that was farther from the door (it was a chilly night). I must say that she was really attentive to us throughout, even letting us know when our pizzas were out of the oven and on their way. At Emily C's suggestion, I got the "Cabin" cocktail, combining two kinds of bourbon, cider, and cranberries. It's quite good, and I was also glad of the swizzle stick, because those ingredients like to separate. Well mixed, it was both potent and delicious. Our pizzas were wonderful. We both arrived hungry, so our server suggested we each order one of the 12" pizzas. My daughter loves white pizza, so that's what she got, and it hit exactly the right spot. After dithering for a while, I ordered the shrooms pizza. When it arrived, I was glad I hadn't ordered a salad, because the arugula mentioned in the description turned out to be a salad mound on the pie, which also added grilled mushrooms and onions to the excellent white pizza my daughter had. It was splendid. I confess that I often guiltily leave pizza edge crusts uneaten, or grimly chew them in the (probably mistaken) belief that eating the whole slice is good for me somehow, but I *wanted* to eat these edges. They take their pizza crust seriously at Krust's. We *were* hungry. I finished mine, but my daughter brought home two slices so that she could indulge in a white chocolate NoRA cupcake. Pizza takes a long time to make right, so I think appetizer options would make a nice addition to the menu - though the success of the arugula on my pizza makes me more interested in the salad offerings they have for next time. The decor combines bold colors, lots of light-colored wood, a high tin ceiling, and stylish lighting. The chair backs don't hold a winter coat very well - they tend to slide off - so I'm rather looking forward to warmer weather when I don't have to wear one. The exterior stands out on the block, even next to the bright pink of NoRA, except for one thing: it's actually difficult to see the name of the restaurant anywhere. I don't know how many times I drove past it while looking for it and knowing where it must be without actually identifying where it was. I only managed it a week ago when I was stopped at the red light at Rappallo. The best way to look for it is on foot, because once you've found it, you can go in and eat. read more

What drew me here was the brussels sprouts pizza. What will bring me back is the awesome atmosphere and cool vibe. The bar was great and the bartenders knowledgeable. They are known as a bourbon bar, but I stuck with beer for my first time here and they had a lot available both on tap and in bottles. Would love to talk more to the bartenders and try some of the bourbon drinks. This place is uber small, so be prepared for a wait if you arrive during peak dining hours. However, the pizzas come out fast and service is prompt so the wait is very bearable. I was really happy with the pizza, although if you came here for traditional pies you may be disappointed. Lots of inventive topping combos on the menu that I will look forward to trying. I thought the brussels sprouts pizza was very good, although could have done with more salt and more of the sprout. This summer I was innocently strolling Main Street after picking up cupcakes for a dinner party I was going to that night and I was stopped DEAD in my tracks. "Coming soon, Krust bourbon and wood fired pizza". SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!! Almost every day since then I have been (literally) getting off two exits early on my way home just to ride by and see if they were open. Thursday, I went out of town for a long weekend. I returned to this ice box called Connecticut to find Krust is now open! The Mr. and I had a dinner commitment we were coming home from, so we weren't planning on getting any dinner but couldn't resist cruising in tonight for a night cap. Growing up in Upper Michigan, Krust reminds me of a really cool hipsterish hunting camp...except with really awesome cocktails and pizzas with pancetta instead of Natty Ice and Totinos Pizza Rolls. The decor really is unique. Pine paneling, wide wood floors and the wood burning oven giving off that great campy smell...we sat in front of the oven so we were toasty warm on this freezing cold day which was glorious. The staff was very friendly, and the guy working at the brick oven chatted with us a little and introduced himself. The bar was busy, people were standing around - I love when a place is a little small so that it fills up quick and seems lively rather than a big empty space that seems dead like some other places in Middletown. We opted for the drink menu (originally going there for the beers - I had my eye set on the Goose Island Sophie, my go-to Chicago beer). Mr. got the John Collins ($8, Soda Water, bourbon, sour mix) and I got the Golden South ($9, Ginger Beer, Lime, Bourbon...other good stuff I can't remember). We loved the selection of specialty drinks, specifically the Classic Drink menu which we have made a pact to work our way through. They also had a Martini and Specialty Cocktail list which all looked AMAZING. Also, NoRa cupcakes on the menu for dessert so you don't even have to walk your butt out in the cold to go next door! Middletown is on the up and up when it comes to restaurant and shops, and this place is just what the doctor ordered for this local. I really don't like pizza. But when I heard a hip new pizza joint recently opened in Connecticut and lots of people were raving about it, I ran to it like a fat kid runs to an ice cream truck. The outside could use a better sign. The current sign is somewhat small and can easily be overlooked. I had to stare for a while because I thought to myself "Is this the right place?" Inside, the layout could be a little bit better. I can't say I'm a big fan of the walled off divider approach, where the dining section is separated from the bar area by a 6" high wall. Plus, the bar area is a little bit cramped. I sat in the back of the bar and felt others were walking a little too close to the back of my stool. In other words, it was a tight squeeze. But really the whole place is a tight squeeze, all shoe horned into a tiny store front on Main Street. Also the industrial grade Ikea-like bar stools didn't exactly help with my comfort level either. Regarding the pizza, I prefer it to be slightly more soup-like (ie; more sauce and more olive oil). Also the mozzarella could have been more stretchy. But overall I liked the pizza. I liked that the underside of the crust was heavily blackened, although I couldn't tell if it was because it was actually burnt or because they hadn't cleaned the oven surface for some time. Either way, I like what I tasted. I understand others have complained of receiving monster sized crusts, but that wasn't the case during my visit. Yea, I agree with the reviews that say the price is a little steep for the size of pizza you receive. It's essentially a small sized pizza for $13. The owners seemed really nice. I chatted with them a little bit and they made me feel welcomed. I got the impression they know lots of people in town because an overwhelming number of patrons seemed to be their friends on the night I visited. That's great. There's nothing wrong with a little support among friends to get a new business jump-started. By the way, for those that don't know me, I lied about disliking pizza. This little gem of a bar made my night last night. The owners I met were obviously hard working, kind, passionate guys. You could really tell they were putting their love into this spot. Not only that but the drinks are fantastic. I had a yummy strawberry fields, my girlfriend had a delicous coconutty concoction and we could have died happy then. Right across from the oven it was the coziest I've been all winter. I love the wood decor, the drinks, the people, a truely great experience. I've been here twice. Seriously delicious pizza and great cocktails. Nice and crispy regular crust, and one of the best gluten free crusts I've had. Would be 5 stars but for a few gripes: it's small inside and the tables are tiny. Despite there being few tables, the service is slow (not just food, drinks too). I have also sat at the bar, where the bartender tends to pour a bourbon for himself when he pours one for someone at service bar, which results in less than attentive service at the bar. Seriously, I watched him take 3 shots in the hour we were there. Not a very professional impression to make. If you're not in a hurry and not claustrophobic, the pizza is well worth it. read more

I loved the concept of this restaurant since bourbon, beer and pizza are three things I crave in life. The problem was at the end of the day bourbon, beer and pizza shouldn't cost you $70.00 in Middletown, CT especially when it is nothing to write home to mom about. Yeah they have an eclectic selections of bourbons and beer (including Utopia for the ultimate in beer goodness) but the bartender MURDERED any chance of enjoying my old fashioned when he drowned it in ice and weighed it down with not one but TWO orange slices. I guess because he didn't put a cherry in that he had to compensate for the lack of fruit. Watery and fruity drink aside I was disappointed that my only appetizer option was a salad. Yup, you better plan on not having an actual appetite because If you thought they could take some of that pizza dough and make some garlic knots or garlic bread or even a classic antipasto plate given they pride themselves on authentic Italian ingredients then you are sorely mistaken. But alas! They do have an arugula salad with walnuts, arugula and strawberries which for the price you pay you would think it would feed four yet the salad barely covered the face of the plate. Oh well, salad isn't really what I came for anyways. So after the watery drink, the rabbit food for an appetizer, i'm thinking thr pizza better be out if this world; I mean it IS the star of this place right? Sadly, it's mediocre at best. My wife and I ordered two and the inconsistencies in crust were noticeable. The meat pie was soggy and greasy in the middle while the Brussels sprout was crispy but burnt in places. Also, the flavor combinations aren't anything unique; in fact they are really pedestrian and what I would expect from any "gourmet" pizza joint. The price wasn't bad but they are no bigger than a standard freezer pizza you would get at a store. At the end of the day i would rather have picked up two pies from Mondo (or modern in New Haven after work on a Friday) and drink a couple of cocktails from home than go back to Krust. I wish I could say that I ate here, but I didn't. Seeing some of the reviews, I am glad I didn't. I even overheard one table send their pizza back because it wasn't cooked all the way through, and someone who got pizza at the bar looked like it was too over cooked and really burnt. Firstly, my friend calls because there are going to be 10 of us and she wanted to see if there was call ahead seating or a reservation we could make. She was told no. She arrives at 6:30 to try and get us a table, only to be told there was a party of 12 who had called ahead and they were reserving them a table. We were told that they didn't want us to leave and to just wait an hour and they would try to work something out. When I arrive to meet her, I can't even find the place because there is no visible sign that tells me where it is other than finally being able to see the number on the door (it was snowing that night, visibility was hard enough). I couldn't believe how tiny it was! The bar was packed like sardines and it was so uncomfortable to stand for 2 hours trying to wait. We kept being told we were next every 20 minutes that my friend would go check. We wouldn't have hung around for 2 hours, but we kept being told we were next, they were just waiting on someone to leave to push a few tables together. The party of 12 was seated the entire time we were there! Finally we had enough and called First and Last who accommodated us very quickly and we left. Even though I did not try the food, I will not be back because the lack of customer service was ridiculous. The bar tender was unfriendly, the staff seemed unorganized in the seating of customers, the hallways leading to the bathroom area, and where the bathroom area are bigger than the seating for the restaurant! read more

Eat in, take-out -- Krust is great! I am NEVER in the area, but when the opportunity arises I have no trouble making the hike to Krust. Haven't had the small plates or desserts, I mean -- you come here for the pizza and the drink. With that, my favorites are the "sunny side, shroom, smoked, meat, veg, or red pizzas". The perfect balance of crust/toppings/crispiness -- I love them all! Their whiskey scotch and bourbon selection is very impressive. With over 200 whiskeys available, I always end up trying something new! If you're not quite ready for all that, the micro and local beers on hand are pretty damn good. Pricing is reasonable and seating can be tricky. The place is divided into a bar and dining room and both spaces are a bit cozy. Literally my favorite place on earth. They just started opening on Mondays now which is AWESOME because its mine and my boyfriends only night off together. The Monday struggle....where to go... Everything's always closed...no longer! The smoked pizza is out of this world. We get it every time we come! I've never had a bad pie here. The bourbon selection is perfect. They have everything you could ever want. My favorite is Templeton Rye. Their beer selection is also great, they support a ton of local breweries. Service is also always been on point. We usually get lucky and always get 2 seats at the bar (even on busy night..we're just lucky!) and we really enjoy the bartenders. The ambience is really chill, with unfinished wood and no POS terminals, it's really down to earth. I love krust! read more

I really like the concept that Krust has goin' on, with their pizza and bourbon. The interior is super cool, not anything I have seen before. The interior design is quite resourceful. You can tell a lot of time and effort when into piecing the interior together. The staff is young and hip, I give them a lot of credit. The waits tend to be on the longer side, with no system to gauge how long of a wait before a table. The take your name and put it on a typical wait list. I like to go sit at the bar while waiting for my table (if you can find a seat). The bar area is small and gets crowded quickly. I loved the fact that I was able to watch the staff formulate all of their different dishes. Only downside, it only made me hungrier. They have really interesting topping combinations that you would not expect sometimes, but they work and are incredibly delicious. They post their daily menu on social media, i.e. Facebook and Instagram. If you a bourbon drinker or craft beer alike, they have both bases covered. They take their concept really seriously and it shows. Even though they are the new kids on the block, being wedged next to Nora Cupcakes and across the street from Eli's, they can definitely hang. read more

Ate here before and had good experiences, but the service was so bad the last time I may never go back. Krust is a slightly pretentious pizza bar with a decent draft list and a better bourbon menu. The pizza is a little overrated, but it's yummy and a different option compared to local other pizza joints. Recently, I took my husband there for his first time. We asked for a table and the hostess said there were no two-person tables available and the wait would be 15 minutes. Despite literally staring down a 4 person table, completely ready for us and no one else waiting, I agreed to wait for a 2 person table and said we would be in the bar. The hostess walked back and forth, to and from the bar about two dozen times, and yet managed to completely forget about us for 90 minutes. Once we realized what happened, we decided to have a few drinks and grab take out from a different restaurant instead. It became a game between us on how many times she would walk by and completely ignore us. I looked at the list when we walked out. Our name was it, and there were names after ours crossed out-- Meaning they skipped us. This place is small, and we were next to the entrance so we would have heard our name called. The worst part of this, IMO, is we should have been sat at an empty table when we walked in and not meant to wait. Never again, Krust! read more

Living as I do in the epicenter of some of the best pizza in the country, I was less than thrilled when a friend selected Krust as the location for her birthday celebration. Reviews here were not encouraging. People seem to have a really good experience or a really bad one. We had a bumpy start. Although the doors were open, the first person to arrive was asked to leave and wait outside for seven minutes until the clock struck exactly four pm. Immediately afterward, though, a party of about six walked past her and was seated right away. Then there was the music, blasting from a speaker directly over our table. So loud that we needed to shout to speak to an adjacent person. By the time the server arrived, sporting more than a little attitude, I had had it and was ready to bolt, but was out-voted by the others in the group. The music was turned down, and things started looking up. A huge liquor selection, excellent beer choices, and some nice wines. Big, flavorful salads, enough for two. Each pizza would serve two moderate diners as well. They are not the classic ápizz served in my neighborhood, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. They are wood-fired and uniformly excellent, with a thin crust, charred just a little on the bottom and somewhat puffy around the edges. Reminded me a little bit of poori, the tasty Indian bread. Our group of five shared three - mushroom and arugula; roasted brussel sprouts and carmelized onion; and a red one with pepperoni. All had lots of garlic, mozzarella, and Parmesan. I'm a pizza snob and I was impressed. And I won't be so hesitant to leave my neighborhood for pizza in the future. read more

Well this is exactly what you expect out of Middletown, Connecticut. A bizarre combination of gastronomic specialties blended together into a giant hipster smoothie. This time, the order of the day is wood-fired pizza, and whiskey. I'm not a big whiskey fan, but it all sounds good to me! I'd estimate their whiskey selection to be at least 225 bottles. Add all the other types of liquor and beer they offer, and you've got what could very well be one of the most diverse alcohol establishments in the entire state... and it's a pizza joint! Only criticism so far is the wasted space - there's very few tables here. I like small restaurants, but the least you could do is effectively place as many tables as humanly possible with the square footage you've got. We came for drinks. I've only had the pizza here a few times, but its great - there are many different types of pizza on the menu that you typically wouldn't see on pizza place menu. They have bourbon which puts a nice twist on your evening. The bartenders are great, and give impeccable service - ask for Neil. :) The restraint is fairly small, so I would suggest going with too large of a party (but I've heard they may be expanding). The parking can also be difficult at times, but I believe there is a health center across the street that you can park in if you're having trouble finding street parking. read more

So I was in CT for family and I still had to work. So when I got offline we were starving. So we passed by Krust earlier that day after breakfast. So we thought we would give it a try. I am so glad we did. Let's start with the pizza. We had the meat lover pizza. It was awesome. Home-made sausage, the bacon( you can never go wrong with bacon), and pepperoni. The sauce was home made and being wood fire cooked made it even better. The drinks were great too. I can't remember the exact name of my drink I just know it had CT in the name. It was refreshing and just really good. I wanted to try more of the specialty cocktails and I will on my next visit. Krust is defiantly a must stop by if you're in the area. Not at all kid friendly, we where told it would be a 20 minute wait.... Well we waited 1 1/2 hours and NEVER got seated, we finally left. No apologies no reason why.....the table we where waiting for that was empty for 45 minutes went to people at the bar I do want to say that I emailed the owner who was extremely apologetic. Finally made my first trip to Krust. We were lucky enough to get a table without a wait. The decor of the place looks like they forgot to call the drywall guy. The service was good and fast. 3 bucks for a Narragansett beer was a shocking surprise. Not your father's rootbeer at 4 bucks also very good considering mattys charges 6 bucks. The food menu was hidden between the drink menu and was also pretty small. We opted for the meat pizza for 16 dollars. My main problem with the pizza was the size compared to the cost. For a couple bucks more I can get a pizza almost 2x the size at mondos. The toppings however were very good. The crust actually had a weird aftertaste, I can't quite describe it but it definitely didn't taste good. I honestly don't think I would rush right back to Krust, I would rather get mondo. A fantastic restaurant--went on a Tuesday night and loved every minute. Pizza was perfectly cooked, nice blistering/char, still a little chewy (in a good way), not heavy-handed on the sauce and toppings, etc. You could tell it was made by someone who seems passionate and serious about pizza. Drinks were equally great. I had a sazerac (had to have something with bourbon or rye) and my wife had a "light and stormy," and both were really nice. I was a little surprised that the sazerac was served in a double old-fashioned glass even though it wasn't on the rocks, but the drink was so nicely stirred and chilled that it was perfect. Finally, service was super-friendly and attentive, and the owners came over and introduced themselves and seemed incredibly genuine and kind. Here's to many more dinners at Krust! read more

Drinks: not kidding about the bourbon/whiskey selection. They have a lot. I liked the Amrut as well as the Hudson maple rye. They have a "taste" portion (1oz) and a "pour" (1.5oz). Arugula salad: a little bit of a let down if you need something to offset the spicy/earthy taste of arugula. If you like the raw taste, you'll like this. Pepperoni pizza: Wood fired, Neapolitan style. Best pepperoni ever - thick, spicy, and lots of it. It should be an entree by itself - I'd get with it. Desserts: Nutella pizza was ok - too much Nutella for the thin crust. Cupcakes were imported from Norma's (local bakery?). The cake was a bit dry. There seemed to be a lot of icing, but you realize why. Once you get a bite with icing, creme filling, and cake, it comes together nicely. Ambience was terrific, bartenders are great. Our waitress wasn't terribly warm, but maybe that's a regional thing. They do a few things great, and are worth a visit. read more

After reading some reviews we decided one evening for a quick carryout pizza and appetizer from Krust after reading some good reviews. Firstly, this place is very hipster; the bar was filled with young bearded men discussing bourbon with the equally youthful yet dour bartender. Being a youngish bearded man myself I could only be entertained by these slightly younger 'yoots' while waiting for the food. The entrance is rather awkward, no hostess stand, I walked in and felt like I just interrupted a couples dinner sitting near the door! Alas, I got the pizzas home and we chowed down. The pizza was OK, it reminded me that yes, I do enjoy the classics of pizza whether its NY or Pepe's in in New Haven or pizza shops in Rome, this not being it. The crust was rather bland and hard to chew, the ingredients were marginal, the basil wilted. I then came to the realization that Krust is probably a place most enjoyed with company and friends in person and that they are a pizza AND bourbon bar, so this review may be lacking the full experience that may be required. Perhaps a future sit in dining experience will excommunicate the take out disappointment? We shall see. read more

This is the second time I have been here but first time since they expanded. Krust is delicious and unbelievably trendy. The music is a tad too loud so I wouldn't recommend for a first date. It was kind of hard to hear and talk to my boyfriend. I ordered the mixed greens and we split a veggie pizza. The veggie pizza was probably one of the best pizzas I ever had!! Everything flowed together so beautifully. I loved the cheeses on the pizza, one was ricotta and the other (I don't remember the name) was so good! It was awesome. After visiting several other local pizzerias, my wife and I decided to give Krust a shot. We've been back just about every single week ever since! The beer selection is fantastic, the food is unbeatable, and the employees really pull it all together! In the year of weekly visits, we're only had one negative experience. (Had to wait a while for a table) However, they went above and beyond to make sure that we were given extra attention and completely satisfied with the experience! Bottom line: Do takeout, stick to red pies. I had the highest expectations for this place, which might explain why I don't feel like I had the best experience at this place. Repeatedly, I was told that this was some of the best pizza in Connecticut, but today's experience showed that it was clearly not the place. We were seated near the door to a not-too-crowded place. The ambience is cool -- very trendy and builder-chic. I liked the cool wall decorations, the loud music, and the general feel. The service was a little lacking, taking a few minutes with little to no follow up unless asked. No water refills, no asking "how did the food turn out" (not well, which I'll get to later). My main gripe is the tiny tables. You can fit a 13" pizza pan, but not much else. We struggled to keep our plates on the table, they mostly half hung over the edge. The pizza was okay, and I feel like a place with such a high reputation (and 4 stars) should not only be okay. The first pizza we tried was a white pie with brussel sprouts, garlic, and onion. It was DRY. There was no white sauce OR dressing. It came to the table smelling burnt, and there was no moisture between the dry bread and dry veggies. We had to ask for a vinaigrette to make it palatable. The other pizza we got was a sausage pizza. It was good, the cheese was fresh and delicious, the sauce tasted fine, and the sausage was in little chunks. Overall the pizza was good, if a little wet (oddly enough). I'd order this again, but probably to go. Overall not the best experience. Between the food and the service, I wouldn't recommend it to my friends. There are plenty of pizza places in the area where I'd had better food and experience. read more

Really really good pizza. Cocktails were good too. They were very accommodating to our well behaved two year old- that said, it's definitely not a kid place (no crayons or sippy cups here... nor should their be!) That said, The service was actually a bit off. Not sure if it was because of aforementioned toddler, but everything came out so fast we felt rushed. But overall I would be back when I could linger over a cocktail sans tiny human. read more
