I came here with some friends for a late night drink and a pie. The beer on tap is a decent collection; the beer in cans is fun. The pizza and atmosphere, however.... First, it wasn't terribly easy to find. It's set back a bit, so the door was a bit hidden. We managed to park, and made our way in. The floors are plywood and there's a sort of cheap feel to everything. It was SO. RIDICULOUSLY. LOUD. We were yelling to be heard, and I felt like I was back at a high school dance. I got pushed and shoved, since the tables were close together and on the small side, and there wasn't tons of room to walk. If that lady with the huge bag and massive heavy coat hit me one more time..... My friend (a vegetarian) and I ordered a pizza to split. It was just a vegetable pie, so it's pretty hard to mess up. Unfortunately, it came out and half of it was completely charred. I happen to enjoy when the dough bubbles and burns, but the underside of the pizza tasted like charcoal. The server also sort of just dropped it off, and disappeared without another word. I wish I could write a more positive review of this place - I'd be willing to give it another shot (hen it's not 9:30 on a Saturday night), but I can't say it would be my first choice. read more

Totally enjoy Krust. Again they have remodeled since the last time we were here. The bar area is extended, open and inviting. However, some bar seats right in front of the brick oven, which is great if it is a cold night, but I needed to move away. We had a 30 minute wait, but they were right on with that estimate. The pizza here is so good. I had a special, which was basically a white pie with tomatoes, basil and a cheese called Melville. I loved it and ate the entire pie. My husband had a classic pepperoni and also ate the whole pie. Krust is a great pizza destination in Middletown. My only sort of complaint was that the bar service was a little slow while waiting for our table. Additionally, I ordered a beer at my table that I thought was the same that I had at the bar and when the bill came it was $10.00! I am not really a $10.00 beer sort of girl! read more

I have had a few people tell me I just had to try Krust! As we were in Middletown tonight we decided to give it a shot. My husband and I went in, and were greeted by a lovely waitress that was very accommodating and gave us terrific service. I ordered an arugula salad which was absolutely PERFECT. We also ordered a Meat and a 'Shroom pizza, which according to reviews were supposed to be phenomenal. Well, they were both okay, but for a pizza purist (I just can't resist a perfect NY Slice, preferably from somewhere in the Bronx), this pizza left me .....wanting for more, and just wishing it was much, much simpler. If you are a hipster, like weird kitschy toppings, LOVE bourbon or enjoy being in a place filled with industrial-style chip board decor, then this is the place for you, BUT as for me, I will enjoy my PERFECT salad at Krust while dreaming of a NY slice from a slightly seedy place someone near Lafayette Avenue. We started off with drinks. He got a glass of Onyx aged moonshine krust barrell, which he loved... I had the fareweel Lisa which was so delicious. we started with the meatball sliders and honestly almost battled for the remaining slider and cut it in half. The pesto ricotta on the meatball sliders was so delicious. We shared a shroom pizza which was so good. Their sauce is just unbelievable, no too sweet, just he right amount of salt. The cheese they use is perfect, not greasy, not low sodium, actual real mozzarella. The crust was nice and crispy the way I like it and not lacking at all. Had a NORA cupcake for desert because he didn't want to split the nutella pizza they offer but next time...... :) Service was great and friendly. It did take a little while to be acknowledged when we came in even though it wasn't busy but sometimes your staff is busy and not watching the door. Me and my honey decided to give this place a try because I LOVE brick oven pizza and it was personal sized and super customizable. A little pricey but hey, for quality it was worth it...or so we thought. We ordered 3 pies for the house, THEY WERE ALL COLD. Don't expect them to keep your pies warm for you, so you better be there in 15 minutes. Second, my pie was undercooked, doughy and uncut, I wanted 1/2 with pesto ricotta...up charged for the addition...ONLY GOT 2 UNEVEN, SOGGY SLICES WITH PESTO RICOTTA. For $55, and less than a 2 mile drive to pick it up, you'd think a oven reheat wouldn't even need to be necessary... the ingredients are good but that's the only thing that kept me from driving back to get a refund or replacement pizza. this place is overrated and disappointing for my first and only experience. I moved out of Connecticut almost two years ago, but every time I come back I have to stop in to Krust. It is some of the best wood fire pizza I have had with such great flavor. The white pie is by far my favorite, but I've had the meat, the brussel, the cheeseburger, and the dessert pie.... and probably some others. I haven't been disappointed in any. I'm a big fan of brown liquor. So this place is great. They even will provide you a menu with prices of everything they have. So you won't be surprised by the price after you order. And there selection is deep. If it's a scotch, chances are they have it. I had my first old fashioned here and it was awesome. But now, I can't have one anywhere else because they make them so well. They are pretty strict on not over serving or serving if you even look like you've been drinking. So come here first. A must stop when in Middletown. read more

I always order the sunny side pizza with eggs, and the basic red, annnd at least three of four other pizzas while I'm there laughing as I eat them all in pure amazement at the perfect crust, melty cheese, and a sauce that needs its own trademark. The drinks are like no other, I just went in there recently and they had spicy margaritas as a special that were indeed the best margs I've ever had, I wish I could somehow get on a newsletter every time these were featured. However, now I must admit that space there is limited and the bar needs to be extended! You're cramped and only able to turn your head and require a crowbar to get to the bathroom or leave. I've recently updated to five stars from four because the food is soooo good... Can't deny them what they earn. A couple of my girlfriends and I went there for Galentine's Day and had a great time. The menu was definitely extensive in terms of drink selections and being a bourbon girl I was VERY happy. We settled on a couple of appetizers: the meatball sliders and the bruschetta of the day. The meatball sliders were phenomenal and we ended up with meatballs on our pizza. The bruschetta though left something to be desired and after literally one bite of a piece from each of us we had to tell the waitress we weren't a fan. She was SUPER gracious and took it off the table and it left our bill. The pizza is that wood fired with crispy edges and while I'm not normally a fan of that type of pizza this was good. So, I've been meaning to try this place out for a while. Finally decided to get a late night snack and a nightcap with a couple of buds. We were seated quickly, and the place was pretty hopping at 9:00 on a Wednesday. The atmosphere is trendy, I guess. The exposed particle board ceiling and distressed wood walls, along with mixed fluorescent and conventional lighting made me feel as if I was dining in a hipster's shed. One of the big draws to this place is their bourbon selection. It's impressive. I was more interested in their beer selection, and was very pleasantly surprised that they had a great variety of craft brews for very reasonable prices. One of us was a vegetarian, so we decided to split two pies - their "red" pizza and a white "shroom" pizza. They came out quickly after ordering. I was really disappointed in these pizzas. The sauce was okay, with little flavor. The toppings were decent and fresh, but the bottom of the crust was chewy, seemingly undercooked, and the ends tasted burnt and bitter. If you go to one of the great wood fired pizza joints in or around New Haven, they've mastered the skill of getting that charred, crispy crust without making it taste burnt. If you're going to name your joint "Krust" you better deliver. They do not. The service was mediocre. Though they were quick with everything, they plopped the pizzas down with some plates but no place settings, parm or red pepper. What did we look like, savages? Even after asking, we didn't receive any utensils so we just ripped the pizzas apart. Our server had zero personality and spoke maybe 5 words to us. I'm not going to be in any hurry to try this place again, but if I do, I'll go for one of their small plates instead of the pizza, and maybe explore that bourbon menu a bit. I haven't been here in a few months but it's worth noting that the renovations are fantastic and lead to a MUCH better flow. They removed the partition and added extra tables (and a whole lotta string lights!). The menu is as awesome as before but includes more artisanal small plates and other creative specials. Apart from our favorite standbys (the smoked & sunny side up pizzas) we ordered a turnip anchovy salad which was pungent, lemony perfection. Overall, Krust is still a treat every time I find myself in Middletown, which isn't nearly as often as it should be. read more

Krust is a really cool spot. You can go there for dinner or just have a drink by the bar. My husband and I stopped by there late Saturday night to grab drinks. We found 2 seats at the bar and sat down. The bartender came over and greeted us. He gave us menus and we looked them over. The menu had so many different drinks to choose from. They also have an extensive list of bourbon. We noticed that customers were eating pizza late and both of us curious we decided to try a mozzarella pie. The pizza was amazing! One of the best pizza we have tried in a while. It was cooked to perfection (I asked for it to be well done.) The drinks were great as well, I ordered a drink called B.L.T. This pizza was some of the worst I had had in a while. I got the veg pizza and added pepperoni. The pizza was so watery that the crust fell apart when I tried to eat it. The crust of the pizza and the bottom outside was burnt, so much so that it was inedible and it made the pizza have an unpleasant bitter taste. My boyfriend had the meat pizza and like mine, his was burnt which gave the pizza an unpleasant flavor. This place very pricey for what it offers. The setup and decor is as cheap as can be, not even finished on the inside. No paint on the walls, it is obvious that there was no care or consideration taken, often with pieces of wood that are half rotten and hardly match throughout the place. There are flies all over, and I even saw what looked like a roach. The pricing is through the roof, and they hardly pit any alcohol in the mixed drinks. Not a venue I like to go to, or especially eat at. Way to costly for what it is, but it is amazing what some dim lighting will conceal. read more

We picked Krust for our most recent Friday date night and it certainly did not disappoint. In our traditional fashion, we went heavy on the appetizers (and then also the pizza). I'm going to say the surprising thing that always gets people: I am not really a pizza person. I never crave it, but I love when it's done well. As we had read in prior reviews, we had a short (10 min) wait for a table and then prompt and friendly service throughout our meal. We shared the carrots appetizer, bruschetta, and pickled eggs. Egan said the carrots were incredibly tasty and the pickled eggs were lackluster. I kid you not when I say that the bruschetta was my FAVORITE part of the meal. Heaps of roasted tomato, burratta mozzarella, and a balsamic reduction on super toasty bread. I couldn't get enough of it. For pizza, we got a White (smoked mozz, ricotta, garlic, etc cheese) and a Meat (bacon, sausage, pepperoni red pie). Charred crust isn't really my thing, and I like it to stay stiffer in the middle of the slice. The flavors were fantastic, but the crust (which I expected to be out of this world) was not really to my taste. Added bonus that they sell NoRA cupcakes and have an alcohol menu 7x the length of the food menu. I'd definitely go again and we had a really fun date. I stopped by here this past Wednesday evening with a coworker for dinner. We arrived to the restaurant shortly before 7:30 to find the place packed with what looked like quite the hipster crowd. The inside of Krust consists of a bar area and a dining room. I never did make it into the dining room but the large bar area had quite the display of whiskeys/bourbons/scotches behind one half of the bar while behind the other half was a huge wood fired pizza oven. Whenever we checked in with the hostess we were told that we could wait for an empty table or sit at a community table with another group. Even though we weren't in a hurry we decided to sit at the community table and followed the hostess to our seats. Then we sat for 15 minutes (I looked back at my checkin time to verify this) before our waiter even acknowledged us. At that point I thought that we were going to be there for quite the long time. Since we were ready to order my coworker and i went ahead and put in an order for 2 pizzas - a Honeymoon (Scamorza, bacon and pineapple) and a Brussels sprouts (mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic, Brussels sprouts and onions.) Amazingly it probably only took 5-10 minutes for the pizzas to be made, cooked, and brought out to our table. Whenever they arrived to the table they both looked fantastic and I quickly dug into them. The crust on both was thin and somewhat crispy which was enjoyable and is indicative of a wood oven fired pizza. Out of the two pizzas both my coworker and I enjoyed the brussel sprouts much more than the honeymoon. It's not that the honeymoon was bad but the flavor was developed a lot more in the brussel sprout one and the cheese was better as well. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. Yes this is definitely a hipster type restaurant but I really enjoyed my pizzas. read more

It was packed inside for a Wednesday night, and so it took a little long to get our orders taken. My coworker and I sat at a community high top table; extremely hipster inside. We ended up ordering the brussel sprout and Hawaiian pizzas for dinner. The pizzas were quite delicious, my favorite being the brussel sprout out of the two. It had a sweetness to it which I think was butter. The Hawaiian was a little less desirable but had some interesting flavor. It did not taste like your traditional Hawaiian pizza! Really enjoyed my trip here. The pizzas were excellent and reasonably priced. The whiskey combinations and variety were making me thirsty. I have a crush on Krust. I also reunited with an old crush at Krust. Here's my story. I had heard good things about this little pizza joint, but living an hour or so away from Middletown, I hadn't had the opportunity to check it out yet. However, when I reconnected with an old crush from summer camp, we decided to meet up at Krust. I arrived early, as I always do, to check out the ambiance. After chatting with the waitress, I discovered that the restaurant recently expanded its space to accommodate more diners. The new space was beautiful, so if you haven't visited in the last year or so, you should definitely come back and check out the new space. My dining companion arrived, and we engaged in a warm hug. She was just like I remembered here, pretty, witty, and fun. We ordered a couple beers and some pizza. The Sunny Side, which was composed of fresh mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic, bacon and egg, was absolutely delicious. The food was gone quick, but the conversation lasted several rounds of drinks. The bad news: my lovely dining companion, beautiful former crush, was happily married. The good news: the food was amazing, and we are good friends now. Recommendation: Krust is a great spot for a date and/or some delicious pizza. read more
