I'm so excited to finally have found a spot with so many great whiskeys, bourbons, and rye in the Hartford area! The menu is truly extensive, and the bottles make the space feel very classy. The pizza was very good - not the best I've ever had, but you will definitely be satisfied. Brussels, which seems to be the most mentioned in Yelp reviews, is worth trying, though the brussels taste wasn't very potent. The Shroom was actually my favorite; it was the truest to the main ingredient. Waiting in the bar can be a little excruciating, but once you sit down, it's a great spot for a large group, as the bigger tables are quite spacious, and the benches allow for a variety of seating variations. This place is pretty great.. Remind me a lot of the thin Brooklyn style pizza (kind of reminds me of Roberta's). Also, if you like whiskey scotch and bourbon, they have one hell of a selection. Its most of the menu. They have other drinks as well, including some good micro brews. They can have a pretty long wait sometimes but if you're looking for a pizza and in the area it's worth it. And for dessert you can get Nora cupcakes ( which you can also buy from the bakery next door directly). My only negative comment would be about the hostess the last time, who seemed generally disinterested in doing her job. Taking people's names in a different order than they walk in (when you're looking straight at them) is annoying, and the overall waitlist process and how long it would take was just generally confusing. One of my absolute favorite restaurants. I'm from NYC but went to college in Middletown so I got to try out a bunch of spots on Main St. This place is so urban and chic it really felt like an NYC pizza spot. I tried the truffle mac n cheese recently and it was so incredible and unique with the addition of chili oil in it. You can't go wrong with their pizza--the toppings are delicious and the crust is both soft and crisp. The "Sweet and spicy roni" was so good with the hot honey drizzled on it. We came to Krust again, I had been looking forward to it all week, and this time tried the meatball sliders. They are great: meatballs juicy and flavorful, pesto sauce and red sauce on slices of baguettes. They only give you three so it is actually an appetizer. We also ordered the Sunny side pizza which we have come to name breakfast pizza. You have to get it with a side of maple syrup. When you do you have all the best flavors in one bite, the cheese, the saltiness of the meat, the heady aroma of fresh garlic the understated runny egg yolk, the doughy yet crispy crust of the pizza and the sweetness of the syrup. Used to love this place. The pizza is still quite good, but we visited on a weekday when we were just one of a few tables seated and it took us over two hours to get in and out. We ordered a salad, pizza, and a beer each. Beer was good. Cocktail list and wine was uninspiring. Would have ordered another beer, but no one checked on us. Krust has been in my pizza rotation since it opened. I absolutely love the crust of their pizza - it's soft and chewy and way better in my opinion than a heavy, cardboard-like crust. They offer some creative pies. When my husband and I go, we usually get one white and one red. On our most recent visit, we got the spicy roni (pepperoni with hot honey) and the breakfast pizza (egg, bacon, and cheese). Neither had a generous amount of toppings - including sauce. I have noticed that in my last few visits, the sauces and toppings were on the light side. That means we are eating lots of dry, plain crust. For the prices (avg. $15/small pizza), I would like more on top! We usually spilt an app as well. They have a nice Burrata that they prepare in different ways. This time it was paired with a Bolognese sauce. It was served to us without bread and our server then showed up about 5 minutes later with 2 tiny slices of bread. Really? The place wasn't busy at all and it seemed well-staffed. So, I don't know if I'm anxious to return because I've found other pizza places that offer a similar crust and they are Savoy, Blind Pig, and Otto. Krust needs to up their game! read more

Hadn't been here in a few years but generally liked their food. Last night's experience however wasn't good. Server didn't seem to care, they brought our drinks to another table and the pizza was very disappointing. Had the charcuterie pizza which tasted like a flatbread I could make better at home. The outside is a bit intimidating with the booji looking ceramics in the window fronts and dark interior mood-lighting. I've walked by multiple times and can never gauge what's going on inside - cult-rituals? tupperware parties? sleepovers? PIZZA? This time, we decided to conquer our fears and head in. Krust doubles as a whiskey bar with a VERY impressive selection that will leave the connoisseur satisfied - but if you ask for a suggestion, expect it to be a bit of a wait. It took 15 minutes for the waitress to ask the bartender...who called up a company...etc. Moreover, the other whiskey neat we ordered came at the end of the meal because the "ticket got lost"... maybe whiskey is their strong suit, but drink service is another in itself. But, we're here to talk about pizza so let's get to that. The pizza came out fairly quick (15 minutes) but left me hungry even though we had 4 people eating two medium pizzas. Be aware that they only have set pizza options with no a-la-carte style available. We went with the Meat (ham, sausage, pepperoni) which was incredibly tasty but felt like it was missing something, and the Shroom. The arugula was a nice touch with all of the flavours - lemon juice, caramelized onion, mushroom - and this was a much more balanced pizza. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience with great food but I left hungry despite ordering two pies, which normally fills me up at any other pizza place. Krust sets itself out as a bit pretentious with the light wooden decor and slits which make you feel like you're inside of a classy barn/furniture packaging, but if you're looking to take someone out to a classier place that still doesn't take itself too seriously, Krust is your go to. read more

I am not ashamed to say I like things blackened. Marshmallows. Bagels. Meats. Toast. And PIZZA. So for someone who likes their pizza thin crust, bubbly, and beautifully brick oven wood fire blackened, this is the place for you. It isn't thick crust, it's not totally smothered in sauce and cheese, but it's rustic and flavorful. Not to mention that you get to sit there and watch the entire process which takes, mind you, no more than 10 minutes from start to finish because that brick oven is so insanely hot it has your whole pizza browned and bubbling in minutes. 800 degrees in fact, where as a regular pizza oven usually hits no more than 650. And it is manned with such precision, these pizza guys know the exact temperature and radiant heat in each part of that oven and how to cook a pizza in there to perfection. They have a tasty and clever list of cocktails and a massive whiskey selection, which was lost on me I'm afraid, but I'm told it was impressive. Hit this place up for the first time even though it's 10 minutes from our house. My wife and I sat at the bar and had a great conversation with the bartender while watching everyone's pizza cook in the huge wood-burning oven. So this place used to be the BEST place in Middletown for pizza. Really. I would have recommended it to anyone who came through Middletown looking for a bite to eat for dinner. But....the last time I was here the pizza that I always ordered (the Shroom), it was not how I remembered it. It was overly wet, the onions were not well done so they were still...crunchy? And the flavor balance was way off. I also had a red pie which was pretty decent, but honestly not as good as I remembered. I don't get the craze for this place-went here, loved ambiance and all and loved sitting at pizza bar and being toasty and watch everything being made but the pizzas here are like sandpaper with crappy tasteless sauce! The Brussel sprouts pie was just ok but the classicRoni which we substituted sausage for pepperoni pie was terrible! Sausage was gross and had no zing to it, cheese was ok, sauce had no flavor and both pies were dry and over cooked! Come for the bourbon but definitely bag the pizza! read more

A pizza and whiskey place. Being a fan of both, that works for me. What I recall of being here was seeing a brussel sprout pizza on the menu. Not something you see every day, cus a lot of people think brussel sprouts just suck, but I dont mind em' so I ordered one. Appears it came out of one of those BLAST FURNACE ovens, where the oven temp is like one of those iron smelters that the Soviet union used to make tank parts with. So the pizza is done in 45 seconds and arrives at your table with burn marks all over it. Which sometimes, is OK! Here, it was more than ok, and I liked it so much that I ordered another brussel sprout pizza TO GO before I finished the first slice. Yah. It works. Go visit. read more

My friend and I needed some girl time and we decided to come to Krust. She had been here before and this was my first time. It was this past Tuesday evening. It was a quiet night and I'm okay with quiet lol. We were seated as soon as we walked in. Our waitress was very nice. I ordered a Chianti and my friend ordered a cocktail ( the Creme Soda) but, the bartender took the liberty of creating a special drink for her, to her surprise... she really liked it. Lol. We decided on the Meatball pizza. Great choice because it was awesome! This "Krust" was perfection!! The sauce was great! The house-made meatballs were delicious along with onions,peppers and pesto ricotta cheese for the perfect combination on this pizza!! Can't wait to come back to try another one. Maaaaaaaaan, so I'm having trouble between 4 and 5 stars here. I feel like if this were in NYC I'd go with 4 but given that this is in Middletown, CT I'm gonna go for a solid 5. I'm a pizza snob. I have a high bar in NYC, if I go to a small town in CT and the wood fired pizza menu is awesome, the 3 pies we order are all fantastic - this place holds it's own in comparison to NYC and they definitely deserve 5 stars. The ambiance here is dark and sexy. I could see this place being fantastic for a date, girls night out or intimate catch up dinner with a friend. This isn't a bro bar, no sports are on here - just good music, friendly bartenders, awesome table service and a solid menu of elevated bar food (along with things like ramen...awesome, awesome). The beer menu here is also pretty damn fantastic. If it's one thing I love about most Connecticut haunts its that they actually really like good craft beer. Lots of locally produced beers at Krust along with some good brews from the surrounding area like Vermont, Boston and even good ol' Astoria, Queens - I see you Singlecut on the beer list :). I went with Oskar Blues' Death By Coconut which is an English Porter style beer brewed in Lyons, CO. Always a pleasure to consume and not always readily available on tap in NYC. I also had UFO Winter Blonde which is an unfiltered ale with clear vanilla flavor and a hint of cold brew coffee. I'm pretty sure I've never even seen this beer anywhere...it was insanely good. Yeah, if I lived around here I would live here...and in the bar across the street too, lol. read more

Really impressed by this fun spot in the center of Middletown. Awesome and out of the box pizza selections - I went with the Sunny side which had a runny egg in the middle with bacon and cheese. Kind of like an open faced breakfast sandwich with a delicious pizza krust ending. Gahhh I just love Krust. The pizzas are perfect everytime! the mood lighting is on point and makes you feel fancy AF while eating pizza- win win. Recently discovered a new favorite seat in the house- the bar right in front of the pizza oven. Watching the magic happen in that pizza oven is mesmerizing and the guys working even entertained all my tipsy random pizza questions. The bar can get very crowded here, but it's worth it. When my family asked where I wanted to go eat for my birthday and I told then a pizza place, they were worried I should pick something nicer. They'd never been to Krust before. Now they know better. I grew up around the city and am a pizza snob. I thought nothing could beat the pizza I knew from the Hudson River Valley and the Bronx. This is a completely different beast, though. The crust is similar to naan bread and the toppings are incredibly innovative and fresh. Do not go to crust if you're looking for a regular "pizza joint". Dress is casual, but everything else is stepped up, new, and fancy, including the unconventional rustic wood interior and full high end whiskey bar. Try the scarier sounding pies. This is definitely a restaurant where the biggest risks reap the biggest rewards. read more

I kind of love this place. Initially, I didn't think it was all that great, but subsequent visits have made a fan out of me. I LOVE the Smoked Pie. LOVE. I actually didn't think I much cared for smoked things, but that mozzarella is so nice, combined with roasted garlic and ricotta. YUM. The Arugala salad is simple and delightful. And the beer... Oh the beer. So many local and craft options. I also appreciate what the expansion has done for the atmosphere. We were recently seated in the expanded dining area and it's super cool. It kind of feels like a barn interior, with pressed wooden benches that even resemble haystacks. Whoever designed the lighting is really clever and creative. It's not cheap; a pie, salad, and a few beers cost over $40 and there were no leftovers. Three stars means A-OK, and that is pretty much where i see Krust right now. You know when you go somewhere you have heard such great things about and waited and waited to try and finally you get there and it's just OK and you wonder if other people are really having a completely different experience? That's how I felt. The place is a neato little strangely decorated pizza and bourbon joint in the upcoming north end of middletown. (i think it is upcoming because the south end has run out available restaurant space). When i first saw the oven going in it was love at first sight - even before trying the pizza. Tonight was a sad night for me, that love was not mutual. Our group ordered four pies. The first two came out pretty quick... and then we waited, and waited. And then the third pie came out. And then we waited and waited. And quite a while later, the fourth pie. I know the oven is burning wood and it isn't just set it and forget it but it was probably 10 minutes between the first and last pie and that left the people who got the first pies almost done when the last pie came out. When there is a fresh pizza on the table and it isn't yours 10 minutes can feel like an eternity. I have cooked in ovens like this and if it's working properly a pizza should not take that long to cook. The restaurant wasn't even at 1/2 capacity so I don't think the oven was crowded. I think they are just learning to use the oven still. As a guy who eats a lot of pizza, I felt the consistency between the pies was way off - it varied from just cooked properly to a few seconds away from charcoal. I go to a lot of wood fired places and if they brought out a pie that looked like these they would apologize and ask if you wanted another - OR they would just tell you they already fired a new one and it would be out in a minute. The components of the pie were all ok too, the doughy crust was good but across the 4 pies we had varied from cracker thin to far too thick. The ratio of crust-sauce-toppings also was off. If you just like crust with no toppings you would probably really like this place. The dough for the crust was good and had more flavor than most. The sauces were nice and subtle, but i thought the pies were all undersauced. The topping - hmmmm well the brussel sprouts were burned to a crisp. The smokey cheese was good but super salty. At the end of the dinner all i really was left with was an overall saltyness. So much salt that my lips felt like i had taken to a salt-lick. It's been 12 hours since i had the pizza and my mouth is still burning with salt. If you like to try cool little trendy new places, it's worth checking out Krust. OH and if you like Bourbon and some different beers, it is a good place to stop. read more

Awesome addition to the neighborhood! These guys have taken the simple concept of beer and pizza to a new level that isn't all that common around these parts. Typically only found in the likes of SoHo or San Fran, the Woodfire Pizza and upscale bar menu is a new take on classic and so refreshing compared to everyone else's delivery pizza with "free breadsticks", bleh. It's time for a mind shift. The small, cozy atmosphere of this place aligns well with the idea of creative whiskey cocktails and inventive individual pies. The Woodfire oven in the back opposite some front row, bar seating, is not only entertaining but visually arresting - just adding to the vibe of the whole place. Food came amazingly fast! We were there with a group of 4 and each got a different pie. This time we went with Smoked, No Mozz, Sunny Side, and Shroom. All were perfectly cooked, crunchy puffy crust, with a thin chewy middle - a very easy eat. Washed it all down with a nice cold Spaten, and Ommegang Hennepin. And, of course we couldn't say no to the cupcakes from NoRa bakery, next door. Servers were friendly and attentive. The tables are a little on the small size and they regularly stopped by to clear anything we were done with and try to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Rich and Kevin made the effort to swing by and great the tables, saying hello and even offering us a sample of one of the dessert beers. A very nice and unexpected touch. We settled up and made our way over to the aforementioned bar seating and enjoyed some great conversation with both the bar staff and the gentlemen tending the oven. This isn't your standard take-out large pizzas and feed the whole party for the big game. It's not even necessarily a place you should expect to go to watch the game. It's a hang out, a great place to meet up with friends and catch up - outside of Facebook, without the typical sensory overload of those "other" restaurants. And with a lot of 2-person tables, it's a great excuse for date night. Popped in for drinks the other night - another wonderful experience! If you follow Krust on Instagram, you can see all of the new whiskies they are brining in on almost a daily basis. Last week I noticed they posted about a Japanese whisky that I wanted to try (Hibiki 17 year old) and I'm glad I stopped in to try it! In addition to the whisky, I had a bourbon whiskey smash with some fresh oranges and strawberries. It was super refreshing and tasty. My friend order the Spice of Life cocktail, featuring Onyx Moonshine, fresh bitters, and fresh fruit, and loved it. No food this time around, but I always have a hard time saying no to their burrata plate! Yum. read more

Delicious pizza, great drinks, and hip atmosphere. I've had their take-out pizza before and thoroughly enjoyed it, so decided to go for their 3-year anniversary dinner this month. We started with the pickled eggs (which were surprisingly tasty) and the burrata (enough to share as an appetizer for 2). My favorite was the specialty Red Melville! The sauce alone made the pizza. The Huevos Rancheros pizza was a close second though with tons of toppings. Also tried their shroom pizza with the gluten free crust. I have to say, they have one of the best gluten free pizzas I've tried. It's a little sweet, but that tastes even better with their shroom pizza (mushrooms and truffle oil). They have tons of beers and whiskey to choose from, you really can't go wrong. There's also NoRA Cupcakes served for dessert if you can save some room. I haven't seen the interior before the renovations, but it looks great now. Very comfortable atmosphere that provides a great space for dinner conversation. Dim lights and exposed wooden panels will make you feel right at home. I'm not sure if it's only because of the anniversary party, but the place was packed. People at the bar were overflowing into the dining area around our dinner table. The service was also mediocre. Even though it was busy, I was very disappointed that our waiter seemed to get all of our drink orders wrong throughout the night. The bar was also "back-up" and running out of different beers that night. I would definitely come back, hopefully when it's a bit less crowded.
