What's can I say..... It feels like a second home in RVA, as if a nice Hispanic grandma is waiting at the entrance to give me a tight hug. When you walk in , it looks like a Bodega in Cuba! all that's missing is the uncle in the back playing dominos. The pictures and murals of la familia really bring it together. My girlfriend and I wanted something to snack on so we got the spinach and cheese empanadas and maduros platanos. The paltanos were soft and sweet and paired well with the crema which resembles more of buttermilk, I'm used to the Central American Thicc cream.The empanadas were crispy and warm and cheesy on the inside and was beautifully plated with peppers and sauce. Anyways, a must is their cafecito con leche! From the first sip to the last it transports you to the edge of the island while you listen to Cuban music. I recommend heading there soon! The food is incredible but the waiter and waitresses are unfriendly and non attentive. It was not even crowded today and the waitress did not even fill our water glasses after waiting over an hour to get our food. I recommend the chef hires more friendly waiter and waitresses. Sooo, my boyfriend and I finally tried Kuba Kuba. We started with the black bean soup which was served with corn bread and the Empanadillas 1 stuffed with spinach and ricotta and 1 picadillo (kuban beef hash). Both starters were okay- nothing to get too excited over. We both chose sandwiches as we were not starving. I went for the crabcake sandwich ( w/black beans and rice). It was good. Good amount of crab not a lot of filler. Too much bread though. My boyfriend had the Sloppy José. He said it was ok. To him it just taste like pot roast and cheese on bread.. Let me start by saying you get soooo much food for a relatively small price here, which is something I can definitely appreciate! I had the Cuban and was unable to finish it. Same for my husband with the roast pork plate. We were also here during a very busy time and despite the restaurant's small size, the staff kept busy and it didn't take us long to be seated. Service was overall very good, but I think there could've been one more waitress since it was so busy. As for the food, I have to agree with other reviewers who said the food was bland and underseasoned. This place was recommended to me by two separate friends who live in RVA, and I was kind of disappointed! I definitely expected the roast pork to have more flavor, although it was super tender and had a good pork taste. A little more salt would've been nice. The really bright spot for me was the black bean soup. Again I received a really hefty portion - a large coffee cup full - and a piece of cornbread on the side. Both were AMAZING. Kuba Kuba is not at all what I expected to find in Richmond, Virginia. This lively, Cuban-inspired restaurant in The Fan serves up serious portions at very fair prices. It's the sort of neighborhood restaurant I wish I had nearby. Were that the case, I'd be in there three times a week. At least. The picadillo stuffed empanadillas are not to be missed. The pastries arrive in a pair topped with sour cream and diced onions. Entrees are large enough to share (and you should so that you won't be too full to sample dessert!) We had the Kuban Roast Pork which came with rice, beans and tostones. The chalk board lists the available specials, which by my observation are worth considering as looking at them caused me more than a little food envy. Still, our roast pork was tender in a way only slow-roasting can impart. The tres leches cake was a perfect end to the meal. The best part? Kuba Kuba, what happened?! I traveled 3,000 miles with a main goal of eating at one of my favorite restaurants of all time...only to find that it's not longer as good as I remember. I thought, well maybe my palate is more sophisticated since the last time I've been here. But that's just not the case, as the people in my dinner party were also aghast at how things have slipped. The plantains were dry and overcooked, the arroz con pollo was sloppy and the empenadillas were over-fried. Perhaps it was a bad night? The only fare that was good were my friend's sandwiches, which are pretty hard to mess up. The worst part was the service. Our waiter was the only one on duty and he looked a little scrambled. He kept forgetting things and walking around looking a little harried. It was also unbelievably hot inside the restaurant, and during a typical east coast summer night that's a no-no. Cheap, quick and quality delicious food. But beware, they are busy for a fairly small restaurant. I have had the Kubanaso Sandwich (cuban sandwich with chorizo), which is pretty good, but the fried plantains that come with it are subpar. The BEST dish to get here in my opinion is the California Huevos. It is described as a dish with two eggs over red beans and cuban bread topped with monterey jack cheese, lime sour cream, and enchilado sauce. It tastes even better than it sounds, YUM, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! The Empanadillas are a popular appetizer, and for a good reason. They're bomb! BUT, the spinach and ricotta is ten times better than the picadillo (kuban beef hash) in my opinion. During one visit, I ended my meal with their Cafe Con leche with condensed milk and vanilla tres leches cake. The cafe con leche was quite possibly the smoothest coffee I've ever had, and is very delicious. The Tres Leches Cake however, was just okay in my opinion. It wasn't moist enough, and the frosting was too thick and overwhelmingly sweet. All and All, a great restaurant, but you just have to order the right things to have a good experience ;P read more

My friend got mushroom sandwich and she seemed like she enjoyed it and only costed $8 while my paella costed me $17 and I bit some sand in the seafood. Came in on a Saturday morning for brunch with 4 adults and a child. It's a small restaurant so we had to wait a bit to be seated. They have on street parking where you can find it and they won't seat you till you're whole party is there. I got their cafe con Leche with the sweetened condensed milk and it was great! Came through town with the family in tow. The wife and I had been to Kuba Kuba Dos and figured we'd drop into the original location for lunch. Ended up to be a very busy Wednesday everywhere in the fan and it was difficult finding anywhere without a long wait. Long story short, the staff welcomed us, were extremely kind, and went out of their way get us seated quickly (3 kids in tow), and we had a great experience. The food is excellent to boot. Plenty of kid friendly options despite a very sophisticated menu otherwise. It's nice to find places that appeal to us where we can also bring the kids along. highly recommend! read more

I love the service and ambience of this place. 5/5 on both. The wine is always excellent and pours are heavy. The food is always interesting and plentiful. My issue is that the blending of flavors and ingredients are clearly last minute. The rice in the various arroz dishes tastes and feels like it was parboiled and added late. Not a good Latin arroz dish or paella that has cooked with the seafood or pollo. I went around 9PM and they served breakfast, lunch, AND dinner. I got the chicken pineapple sandwich and plantains. I loved how colorful my sandwich was, it also really good. Fiance and I stopped in for ha,ppy hour on a wednesday night. Very cute, if somewhat tiny, restaurant. Parking is nonexistent so you'll have to scrounge for parking in the neighborhood. Interesting requirement but im guessing they get busy and there is a need for efficiency. We ordered the happy hour wines and two appetizers, the black bean soup and the empanadas fill with ricotta and spinach. The black bean soup was lukewarm to my fiances dismay but it tasted fine. The empanadas however were divine. Loaded with filling i love the dressings of diced veggies. Perfect texture, so i highly recommend. For our entrees we both got paela, hers the veggie one and mine the seafood with chorizo. Guys, these dishes were ridiculously huge. You will def have leftovers if you get any of their bowls. I was surprized that the chorizo was in sausage shape and not ground. Coming from El Paso, Tx I've never seen it done that way. I loved it though, quite tasty. I In regards to service, our waiter/bartender was very friendly and attentive to our drink levels. I'm from S. Florida and I moved to FXBG about 3 years ago. There is NOTHING and I mean NOTHING that even remotely offers island food. Well, maybe that new Jamaican restaurant that just opened a month ago. Anyways, Kuba Kuba is it!!! When I tell you that the food was great, believe me. Service was fast and good as well. They played typical Hispanic music. My son ordered a grilled cheese and it was not your typical rinky-dink grilled cheese. This was melted heaven in Cuban bread and plátano maduros (fried yellow plantains). I definitely would recommend this place to others and am going to be coming back.
